The demand for cotton with a silky fiber, great tensile strength, and a staple at least one and five-eighths inches in length created a boom in the growing of Sea Island cotton in North Florida and South Georgia during the last third of the nineteenth century. Although Sea Island never comprised more than one per cent of the cotton grown in the United States, the use of its long-staple fibers for fine fabrics, laces, thread, and eventually for automobile tires enabled “long cotton,” as it was called, to command a price that was double and sometimes triple that paid for …

The Civil War resulted in freedom for approximately 62,000 Florida slaves. Most of these were illiterate and poorly prepared for their new status. Slavery, with few exceptions, had provided no opportunity for formal learning, and education was essential for an adjustment from a condition of dependence to a life of independent responsibility. Fortunately, a majority of Florida freedmen were anxious to learn.

On Sunday afternoon, April 9, 1905, the long funeral procession of José Alejandro Huau moved at a slow pace to the Old City Cemetery in East Jacksonville, Florida. United States Senator James P. Taliaferro, the former Jacksonville mayor, Judge Morris A. Dzialynski, and a large entourage of dignitaries, honorary pall bearers, and other mourners rode in the flag-draped carriages. Many people came on foot. The procession included a large Masonic honor guard. A huge array of floral wreaths surrounded the burial site, as Jacksonville lamented the loss of one of its most esteemed citizens.

In the summer of 1925, the world focused its attention on the sleepy town of Dayton, Tennessee, the site of the “Monkey Trial” of John T. Scopes. William Jennings Bryan, former secretary of state and the nation’s most zealous fundamentalist, and Clarence Darrow, the most famous trial attorney of his time, were the real antagonists, as they argued over the issue of the teaching of evolution. Both sides battled as if each believed the trial would produce the definitive statement on God and the creation of man.

Napoleon Bonaparte by 1799 had either conquered his European enemies or had pacified them, and only Great Britain stood between him and complete mastery of the continent. Spain since 1795 had been a rather reluctant ally of France, and thus her coast and the coasts of her colonies, including those along the Gulf coast, had become subject to the depredations of almost overwhelming British sea power. To further plague the Spaniards another problem materialized in 1799—the return to Florida of William Augustus Bowles.

In our own time, when rapid changes in attitudes toward sexual morality are conversational coin, it is interesting to consider an experiment in the regulation of morals devised in Pensacola, Florida, in the early years of the twentieth century. As a port city, Pensacola responded historically to the sexual desires of large numbers of male transients by noteworthy permissiveness. The city displayed a similarly liberal attitude towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Deteriorating economic conditions in Virginia combined with the attractive prospect of fertile tracts of land available at moderate prices in the new territory prompted John Grattan Gamble to visit Middle Florida. Students of Colonial Latin America generally credit its Indian mission systems as effective instruments of frontier defense. A study of the Spanish missions of Florida does not support this thesis. The “paper” bulwark provided by the Florida missions when challenged could represent a significant exception to the alleged importance of the defense role of the church in the Indies. Or, it could reveal that the missionaries played an ineffective part in the defense of Latin-American frontiers. This study aims to investigate the influence of rumination and distraction on consumer complaining behaviors (e.g., voice, negative word of mouth, and exiting) in a service failure encounter, and further examine the role of brand loyalty in consumer complaining behaviors. The findings of this study suggest that consumers use rumination and distraction to cope with service failures, which has different influences on consumer complaining behavior. Angry rumination increases all three types of consumer complaining behaviors, whereas distraction reduces negative word-of-mouth only. In addition, these relationships vary across the level of brand loyalty. Loyal consumers are more likely to voice their …

A characteristic of Class II Division 2 malocclusion is severe deep overbite and lingual inclination of the incisors. Deep overbite can be corrected by intrusion of anterior teeth, extrusion of posterior teeth, or a combination of both. Intrusion of the incisors should be the preferred treatment in nongrowing patients with anterior deep bites.

Condylar resorption can be challenging to orthodontist when encountered during treatment. The clinical characteristics and cephalometric findings of a patient who experienced postoperative skeletal relapse caused by progressive condylar resorption (CR) are presented in this case report. The predisposing factors and treatment protocols of condylar resorption are also discussed. A 17-year-old female patient came to our hospital with chief complaint of no contact of anterior teeth. Cephalometric analysis shows that she is a patient with skeletal Class II hyper-divergent pattern caused by mandibular retrognathism. Flattened left condylar head was found on panoramic film suggesting possible condylar erosion in the past. …

This case report presents successful orthodontic management of unilateral retained deciduous second molars and congenitally missing second premolars using an additional anchorage in conjunction with the segmented arch approach. A 21-year-old female patient presented as skeletal Class I malocclusion, mild crowding, straight facial profile, and orthodivergent facial pattern. The treatment plan was established to extract deciduous teeth and close the extraction space by molar protraction. Purpose: LeFort I osteotomy is used to correct and improve the maxillary hypoplasia in secondary cleft deformities. However, surgical complex and challenge would be the risk factor of postsurgical instability. This study compared surgical and postsurgical changes in maxillary and mandibular movements and stability in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) who underwent single- or two-piece LeFort I osteotomies.

Materials and Methods: Forty-five patients with CLP were included, of whom 30 and 15 received single- and two-piece LeFort I osteotomies, respectively. Cone-beam computed tomography was administered at three time points (T0: presurgery; T1: <1-month postsurgery; and T2: ≥1-year postsurgery) to evaluate surgical (T1–T0) and postsurgical (T2–T1) changes in maxillary and mandibular movement and stability. The overall movement, arch width, and relapse rate were measured and compared between the groups. Potential factors influencing skeletal stability were surgical change, segmental maxilla, cleft types, age, sex, and prior alveolar bone graft placement were analyzed.

Purpose: According to clinical experience, the ANB angle (A point, nasion, B point) norm value of Taiwan Association of Orthodontists (TAO) board examination seems to be larger than the Taiwanese population. Therefore, this study aimed to integrate studies of Taiwanese cephalometric norms by a meta-analysis.

Patients and Methods: Studies were searched from electronic database of PubMed, National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan, and physical libraries.
