Can Faith Heal The Cracks In Cultural Politics? On The Theological Turn Of Terry Eagleton In The New Century, Jian Wang Nov 2021

Can Faith Heal The Cracks In Cultural Politics? On The Theological Turn Of Terry Eagleton In The New Century, Jian Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

With the increasing prominence of religious issues, the “theological turn” in Eagleton’s theory has gradually drawn attention of academics in China. In his theory, Eagleton constructs a god who values creativity, cares for others, and bears the responsibility of crime. Through interpretation of ideal theology, Eagleton constructs a common culture that can be jointly built and shared. This practice continues and develops the attempt of the New Left in Britain to explore the socialist goal through “cultural politics.” The theoretical innovation originates from the conundrum of practice. Compared with Raymond Williams, Eagleton needs to find the power to transform theoretical …

Performing The Melancholy Of City: Body, Death, And Photography, Xiao Cai Nov 2021

Performing The Melancholy Of City: Body, Death, And Photography, Xiao Cai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Roland Barthes makes it clear in Camera Lucida that the relationship between theatre and photography is the fetish of “loss” and “death”. This extends the essence of photography to the temporal trauma of flow and stillness. As stillness in time is captured by the camera, every shot contains a double death. However, photographers’ bodily intervention not only brings movement in the photo, but also imprints “ruins” on it. As dying things, the intertextuality between the body and the ruins registers the imperceptible process of slow declination of every urban locale in time. Such is a new reflection on space in …

Lu Xun’S Imagery And Its Visual Representations, Naiwu Zhang Nov 2021

Lu Xun’S Imagery And Its Visual Representations, Naiwu Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Lu Xun’s imagery refers to the visual construction of Lu Xun. Different images of Lu Xun are constructed via visual presentations such as biography, animation and spectacle. The process of shaping Lu Xun’s images is marked by heterogeneity, and particularly by the escape of images as the most prominent feature in their dissemination. Although Lu Xun’s image and Lu Xun himself are closely related, the transition from the literary world to the verbal-pictorial world forms a unique context of image as well as image modeling. “Serenity” and “spectacle” are the two faces of Janus of the image modeling of Lu …

The Influence Of Emanuel Swedenborg’S Mysticism On William Blake’S Poetics, Pengfeng Zhang, Shukui Zhan Nov 2021

The Influence Of Emanuel Swedenborg’S Mysticism On William Blake’S Poetics, Pengfeng Zhang, Shukui Zhan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Mysticism is regarded as a poetic worldview and methodology, which has a wide connection with Western cultures and literary works. The mystical thoughts of Emanuel Swedenborg, a prominent Swedish scientist, theologian and mystic, had a huge impact on William Blake’s poetics. He integrated Swedenborg’s mystical thought into his poems and, through rich imagination, formed his own religious mystical poetics using symbolism and myths. Blake’s poetics exerts tremendous and far-reaching influence on later English poets as well.

The Paradigm, Features And Limitations Of “New World Literature”, Lan Hao Nov 2021

The Paradigm, Features And Limitations Of “New World Literature”, Lan Hao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The beginning of the 1990s saw a fundamental change in ontology, epistemology and methodology in the theory of new world literature. It is no longer stable and essentialist, but turns into a relationship, a network and a process of occurrence. Its epistemology is no longer dualistic, but pluralistic, transcending the boundaries of nationality and language to emphasize the translated text as a phenomenological ontology. Due to “the bankruptcy of philology” in the study of humanities and the increased complication of world literature, researchers advocate cooperation and the use of interdisciplinary methods. Digital humanities, in particular, emerge in the age of …

The Realm Aesthetics Of “Quick” In Su Shi’S Poems, Chunjie Zhu Nov 2021

The Realm Aesthetics Of “Quick” In Su Shi’S Poems, Chunjie Zhu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Su Shi’s advocacy and pursuit of the “quick”(kuai) aesthetic is a phenomenon that should not be ignored in the history of poetry. By appreciating the cheerful poems, imitating the “quick” poetry by literati of previous generations, and promoting the writing of such poetry, he was an early advocate who proposed and perfected the theory of “quick” poetry. In his writings, he combined cheerful and joyful feelings with writings uninterrupted by measuring and weighing the phrases, and tried to construct a “quick” aesthetic realm of poetry. Meanwhile, he injected into this realm new elements of humor and vigor, which established a …

On The Core Scope And Self-Consistency Of Media Art And Literature, Qing Yan Nov 2021

On The Core Scope And Self-Consistency Of Media Art And Literature, Qing Yan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Media art and literature has formed a new set of rules for textual production and symbolic control out of the logic of communication. With an inherent structure of significance and dimension of temporality, media art and literature not only provide a new form of development for art, but also offer more possibilities for artistic imagination to engage in social life. According to the process of communication, the communication of literature and art via media involves three domains: “media” at the level of production, “story” at the level of content, and “senses” at the level of aesthetics. Due to the interconnection …

Transforming Anecdotes Into Fiction:Zeng Pu’S A Flower In A Sinful Sea And The Study Of Anecdotes In The Late Qing Dynasty And The Republic Of China, Quan Wei Nov 2021

Transforming Anecdotes Into Fiction:Zeng Pu’S A Flower In A Sinful Sea And The Study Of Anecdotes In The Late Qing Dynasty And The Republic Of China, Quan Wei

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

From the perspective of New Literature after the May Fourth New Culture Movement, Liang Qichao’s “new fiction”, Lu Xun’s “satirical fiction” and old scholars’ fiction from “the School of Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies”, are all classified as old literature. Yet from the perspective of both fiction studies and feminism, Zeng Pu’s A Flower in a Sinful Sea is a new, instead of an old, novel. Its literary practice of “transforming anecdotes into fiction”, by integrating the style of the chaptered novel, note-form fiction, as well as western fiction, connects the old and new literature during the late Qing dynasty and …

BACKGROUND: Numerous publications describe the clinical manifestations of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC or "long COVID"), but they are difficult to integrate because of heterogeneous methods and the lack of a standard for denoting the many phenotypic manifestations. Patient-led studies are of particular importance for understanding the natural history of COVID-19, but integration is hampered because they often use different terms to describe the same symptom or condition. This significant disparity in patient versus clinical characterization motivated the proposed ontological approach to specifying manifestations, which will improve capture and integration of future long COVID studies.

METHODS: The Human Phenotype Ontology …

Two-Dimensional Steady Boussinesq Convection: Existence, Computation And Scaling, Jeremiah S. Lane, Benjamin F. Akers Nov 2021

Two-Dimensional Steady Boussinesq Convection: Existence, Computation And Scaling, Jeremiah S. Lane, Benjamin F. Akers

Faculty Publications

This research investigates laser-induced convection through a stream function-vorticity formulation. Specifically, this paper considers a solution to the steady Boussinesq Navier–Stokes equations in two dimensions with a slip boundary condition on a finite box. A fixed-point algorithm is introduced in stream function-vorticity variables, followed by a proof of the existence of steady solutions for small laser amplitudes. From this analysis, an asymptotic relationship is demonstrated between the nondimensional fluid parameters and least upper bounds for laser amplitudes that guarantee existence, which accords with numerical results implementing the algorithm in a finite difference scheme. The findings indicate that the upper bound …

Publications and Research

Genomic data continue to advance our understanding of species limits and biogeographic patterns. However, there is still no consensus regarding appropriate methods of phylogenomic analysis that make the best use of these heterogeneous data sets. In this study, we used thousands of ultraconserved element (UCE) loci from alligator lizards in the genus Gerrhonotus to compare and contrast species trees inferred using multiple contemporary methods and provide a time frame for biological diversification across the Mexican Transition Zone (MTZ). Concatenated maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian analyses provided highly congruent results, with differences limited to poorly supported nodes. Similar topologies were inferred …

Real-Time Bidding Campaigns Optimization Using User Profile Settings, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Muhammad Atif Qureshi, Brian Mac Namee

Articles

Real-time bidding is nowadays one of the most promising systems in the online advertising ecosystem. In this study, the performance of RTB campaigns is improved by optimising the parameters of the users' profiles and the publishers' websites. Most studies concerning optimising RTB campaigns are focused on the bidding strategy, i.e., estimating the best value for each bid. However, this research focuses on optimising RTB campaigns by finding out configurations that maximise both the number of impressions and the average profitability of the visits. An online campaign configuration generally consists of a set of parameters along with their values such as …

Protein Kinase Sgk2 Is Induced By The Β3 Adrenergic Receptor-Camp-Pka-Pgc-1Α/Nt-Pgc-1Α Axis But Dispensable For Brown/Beige Adipose Tissue Thermogenesis, Chul Hong Park, Jiyoung Moon, Minsung Park, Helia Cheng, Jisu Lee, Ji Suk Chang Nov 2021

Protein Kinase Sgk2 Is Induced By The Β3 Adrenergic Receptor-Camp-Pka-Pgc-1Α/Nt-Pgc-1Α Axis But Dispensable For Brown/Beige Adipose Tissue Thermogenesis, Chul Hong Park, Jiyoung Moon, Minsung Park, Helia Cheng, Jisu Lee, Ji Suk Chang

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Brown and beige adipocytes are specialized to dissipate energy as heat. Sgk2, encoding a serine/threonine kinase, has been identified as a brown and beige adipocyte-specific gene in rodents and humans; however, its function in brown/beige adipocytes remains unraveled. Here, we examined the regulation and role of Sgk2 in brown/beige adipose tissue thermogenesis. We found that transcriptional coactivators PGC-1α and NT-PGC-1α activated by the β3 adrenergic receptor-cAMP-PKA pathway are recruited to the Sgk2 promoter, triggering Sgk2 transcription in response to cold. SGK2 elevation was closely associated with increased serine/threonine phosphorylation of proteins carrying the consensus RxRxxS/T phosphorylation site. However, despite cold-dependent …

Landomycins are angucyclines with promising antineoplastic activity produced by Streptomyces bacteria. The aglycone landomycinone is the distinctive core, while the oligosaccharide chain differs within derivatives. Herein, we report that landomycins spontaneously form Michael adducts with biothiols, including reduced cysteine and glutathione, both cell-free or intracellularly involving the benz[a]anthraquinone moiety of landomycinone. While landomycins generally do not display emissive properties, the respective Michael adducts exerted intense blue fluorescence in a glycosidic chain-dependent manner. This allowed label-free tracking of the short-lived nature of the mono-SH-adduct followed by oxygen-dependent evolution with addition of another SH-group. Accordingly, hypoxia distinctly stabilized the fluorescent mono-adduct. While …

Dark Side Of Black Friday: The Major Drawbacks With This Shopping Bonanza, Sarah Schiffling, Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos

Articles

Black Friday is upon us again. It’s one of the biggest shopping events of the year, although there are mixed signals about how successful it is likely to be in 2021. One recent study found that only a third of consumers plan to take part. The financial strain of COVID-19 is still evident, and inflation running at its highest level in a decade.

All the same, consumer confidence has been rising. According to GlobalData, shoppers are set to spend nearly £9.2 billion in the four days from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. This would still be a big increase …

Intra-Participant And Inter-Analyst Cacophony: Working The Hyphen Between Modalities Using Provocative Reflexivity, David A. Caicedo, Andrea Nikté Juarez Mendoza, Miguel Pinedo

Publications and Research

Multimodal psychological research highlights the benefit of using complementary approaches to the phenomenological study of lived experience. Rather than focus on any individual method, this study attempts to concentrate on the transition, or hyphen, between them, as a place for reflexivity, ethics, and theory. Participants were 14 adults, recruited from ‘New York Community College’ and ‘New Jersey Community College’ in the U.S., who engaged in focus groups where they completed two activities: drawing a map of their personal journey to the college or of their self-identity, and their definitions for the immigration-related terms illegal and undocumented. Results demonstrated that …

Although the concepts of nonuniform sampling (NUS) and non-Fourier spectral reconstruction in multidimensional NMR began to emerge 4 decades ago (Bodenhausen and Ernst, 1981; Barna and Laue, 1987), it is only relatively recently that NUS has become more commonplace. Advantages of NUS include the ability to tailor experiments to reduce data collection time and to improve spectral quality, whether through detection of closely spaced peaks (i.e., “resolution”) or peaks of weak intensity (i.e., “sensitivity”). Wider adoption of these methods is the result of improvements in computational performance, a growing abundance and flexibility of software, support from NMR spectrometer vendors, and …

Going Global, Acting Local: How An International Pandemic Convention Can Support Regional And Community Response, Kevin A. Klock, Lawrence O. Gostin, Sam F. Halabi

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A WHO pandemic convention could set in place an overarching framework needed for strengthening global health security. As the World Health Assembly (WHA) debated the merits of such an agreement, a critically important regional instrument – the Treaty for the Establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA Treaty) – entered into force on 5 November 2021. The new agency will, among other things, ensure there is a “common framework” for addressing “emerging issues and pandemics in the event of a public health emergency on the continent with cross border or regional implications.”

An improved worldwide health security strategy is essential …

Marine plastics are considered to be a major threat to the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources of the Caribbean, on which the region relies heavily for tourism and fishing. To date, little work has quantified plastics within the Caribbean marine environment or examined their potential sources. This study aimed to address this by holistically integrating marine (surface water, subsurface water and sediment) and terrestrial sampling and Lagrangian particle tracking to examine the potential origins, flows and quantities of plastics within the Southern Caribbean. Terrestrial litter and the microplastics identified in marine samples may arise from the maritime and …

Shared groundwater resources between Mexico and the United States are facing unprecedented stressors. We reflect on how to improve water security for groundwater systems in the border region. Our reflection begins with the state of groundwater knowledge, and the challenges groundwater resources face from a physical, societal and institutional perspective. We conclude that the extent of ongoing cooperation frameworks, joint and remaining research efforts, from which alternative strategies can emerge, still need to be developed. The way forward offers a variety of cooperation models as the future offers rather complex, shared and multidisciplinary water challenges to the Mexico–US borderlands.

System Identification Of Postural Tremor In Wrist Flexion-Extension And Radial-Ulnar Deviation, Sydney Bryanna Ward

Theses and Dissertations

Generic simulations of tremor propagation through the upper limb have been achieved using a previously developed postural tremor model, but this model had not yet been compared with experimental data or utilized for subject-specific studies. This work addressed these two issues, which are important for optimizing peripheral tremor suppression techniques. For tractability, we focused on a subsystem of the upper limb: the isolated wrist, including the four prime wrist muscles (extensor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi radialis, and flexor carpi radialis) and the two degrees of freedom of the wrist (flexion-extension and radial-ulnar deviation). Muscle excitation and joint …

(1) Background: Intracortical microelectrodes (IMEs) are essential to basic brain research and clinical brain–machine interfacing applications. However, the foreign body response to IMEs results in chronic inflammation and an increase in levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS). The current study builds on our previous work, by testing a new delivery method of a promising antioxidant as a means of extending intracortical microelectrodes performance. While resveratrol has shown efficacy in improving tissue response, chronic delivery has proven difficult because of its low solubility in water and low bioavailability due to extensive first pass metabolism. (2) Methods: Investigation of an …
