Witnessing Auschwitz is confronted with “Levi’s paradox”: The speechless as a thorough witness cannot testify because of their death; and the survivor as an exception of Auschwitz, to some extent, is only a pseudo-witness. Agamben argues that neither the speechless nor the survivor can bear witness alone, and the witness should be seen as a threshold constructed by the mutual “exclusive inclusion” of the speechless and the survivor, that is, a fractured construction of “unity-difference.” As a result, the impossibility and possibility of witnessing constitute each other. Mikhail Bakhtin inaugurates a kind of ethics of responsibility in his first book Toward a Philosophy of the Act. It is informed by Husserl’s phenomenological propositions, and it engages a hidden dialogue with Levinas’ theory. It may be argued that Bakhtin and Levinas combined to present a comprehensive articulation of the ethics of the Other. Bakhtin rewrites the ethics of the Other and constructs an aesthetics marked by ethical issues through such approaches as transforming the ethical relation of “I-Other” into the aesthetic relation of “author-hero.” Such ethical aesthetics is intertextually connected to Levinas’ theory about literature and art, which …

Roland Barthes’s photography theory is mainly manifested in his poststructuralist work Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography. It is not devoted to disenchantment of images as he did in his earlier work Mythologies, but highlights the affective power of images through the proposition of punctum (as a contrast to stadium). In the view of Jacques Rancière, Barthes’s punctum theory enchants images and gives rise to fetish and the theology of incarnation. Rancière reconstructs Barthes’s photography theory based on his own understanding of the aesthetic regime and language-image relationship. This reconstruction provides insights about image theory, but also reveals some misinterpretations of …

Due to the crisis of historical representation in the field of historiography in the mid-to-late twentieth century, Dominick LaCapra, an important thinker of “trauma theory,” puts the traditional methodology in historiography into question and reconstructs possibilities in historical writing by proposing to break traditional disciplinary boundaries and promote dialogues between history and psychoanalysis, literature, philosophy as well as ethics. From an interdisciplinary perspective, LaCapra explores the aesthetics of “negative sublime” and types of trauma in extreme events, and proposes the theory of “writing trauma” through combining speech act theory and ethics. The extant studies on leadership are replete with employee, coworker, and leader outcomes, however, research is still nascent on leadership’s crossover into employees’ family members’ lives. To examine leadership’s impact on the work–family interface, we draw on conservation of resources theory (COR) and crossover theory and investigate how authoritarian leadership and benevolent leadership affect spousal family satisfaction. We examine the mediating influence of work–family conflict (WFC) and work-family facilitation (WFF), and the moderating impact of spouses’ need for control. Contrary to traditional views, fossil bones have been shown to occasionally retain original cells, blood vessels, and structural tissues that are still comprised, in part, by their original proteins. To help clarify how such remarkable preservation occurs, we explored the fossilization history of a famous Tyrannosaurus rex specimen previously shown to yield original cells, vessels, and collagen protein sequences. By analyzing the trace element composition of the femur of this tyrannosaur, we show that after death its carcass decayed underwater in a brackish, oxic, estuarine channel and then became buried by sands that quickly cemented around the bones, largely protecting …

The molecular mechanisms that drive hematopoietic stem cell functional decline under conditions of telomere shortening are not completely understood. In light of recent advances in single-cell technologies, we sought to redefine the transcriptional and epigenetic landscape of mouse and human hematopoietic stem cells under telomere attrition, as induced by pathogenic germline variants in telomerase complex genes. Here, we show that telomere attrition maintains hematopoietic stem cells under persistent metabolic activation and differentiation towards the megakaryocytic lineage through the cell-intrinsic upregulation of the innate immune signaling response, which directly compromises hematopoietic stem cells’ self-renewal capabilities and eventually leads to their exhaustion. …

Although newcomer youth demonstrate high levels of resiliency, many experience challenges in emotional, linguistic, academic, and social functioning. Over the past decade, some promising school-based psychosocial interventions for newcomer youth have been developed. These interventions are necessary, but not sufficient to promote well-being. Without attention to the larger context, focusing solely on the skills and adjustment of newcomer youth could potentially stigmatize students further. There is a need to engage non-newcomer peers for two reasons. First, peer relationships and inclusion are important predictors of well-being. In his early career, Lu Xun participated in the ideological trend of qun (group) in the late Qing dynasty through poetics, and expressed his new understanding of the relationship between groups and individuals within this background. Some reformers carried on the tradition of poetry education, emphasizing the inherent function of literature on transferring affection and its political significance on the construction of groups. Critics since the Song Dynasty, inspired by Soto Zen theory, developed the concept of “host-guest” to analyze the composition of the ancient-style prose. The electronic structures of four precursors for organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, namely, methylammonium chloride and iodide, as well as formamidinium bromide and iodide, are investigated by X-ray emission (XE) spectroscopy at the carbon and nitrogen K-edges. The XE spectra are analyzed based on density functional theory calculations. We simulate the XE spectra at the Kohn-Sham level for ground-state geometries and carry out detailed analyses of the molecular orbitals and the electronic density of states to give a thorough understanding of the spectra. PURPOSE: Large-panel genomic tumor testing (GTT) is an emerging technology with great promise but uncertain clinical value. Previous research has documented variability in academic oncologists' perceptions and use of GTT, but little is known about community oncologists' perceptions of GTT and how perceptions relate to clinicians' intentions to use GTT.

METHODS: Community oncology physicians (N = 58) participating in a statewide initiative aimed at improving access to large-panel GTT completed surveys assessing their confidence in using GTT, attitudes regarding the value of GTT, perceptions of barriers to GTT implementation, and future intentions to use GTTs. Particle–wall interactions have broad biological and technological applications. In particular, some artificial microswimmers capitalize on their translation–rotation coupling near a wall to generate directed propulsion. Emerging biomedical applications of these microswimmers in complex biological fluids prompt questions on the impact of non-Newtonian rheology on their propulsion. In this work, we report some intriguing effects of shear-thinning rheology, a ubiquitous non-Newtonian behaviour of biological fluids, on the translation–rotation coupling of a particle near a wall.
