The 30-million-word gap, the quantified difference in the amount of speech that children growing up in low-resourced homes hear compared to their peers from high-resourced homes, is a phrase that has entered the collective consciousness. In the discussion of quantity, the complex and nuanced environments in which children learn language were distilled into a singular metric—number of words. In this article, we propose examining children’s language environments by focusing on what caregivers communicate to children and how they communicate it. Focusing on the features of the language environment promotes a more inclusive approach to understanding how children learn and the …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Palmer amaranth [Amaranthus palmeri (S.) Wats.] presents both a high genetic diversity and propensity to evolve resistance to herbicides of several sites-of-action which have made it one of the worst weeds in US agriculture. In Arkansas, Palmer amaranth is resistant to herbicides of seven sites-of-action, which are 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) inhibitor, acetolactate synthase inhibitors, microtubule inhibitors, protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors, very long chain fatty acid inhibitors, glutamine synthetase inhibitors, and hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase inhibitors. Sustainable management requires a better understanding of its biology and that of herbicide environmental fate. This research had five objectives: 1) characterize the current status of Palmer amaranth …

Sigesn Light-Emitting Devices: From Optical To Electrical Injection, Yiyin Zhou Dec 2021

Sigesn Light-Emitting Devices: From Optical To Electrical Injection, Yiyin Zhou

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Si photonics is a fast-developing technology that impacts many applications such as data centers, 5G, Lidar, and biological/chemical sensing. One of the merits of Si photonics is to integrate electronic and photonic components on a single chip to form a complex functional system that features compact, low-cost, high-performance, and reliability. Among all building blocks, the monolithic integration of lasers on Si encountered substantial challenges. Si and Ge, conventional epitaxial material on Si, are incompetent for light emission due to the indirect bandgap. The current solution compromises the hybrid integration of III-V lasers, which requires growing on separate smaller size substrates …

Diversifying Woolf’S Room: Private Spaces And Creativity In The Works Of Willa Cather, Kate Chopin, Gayl Jones, And Alice Walker, Ebtesam M. Alawfi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a divergence between Woolf’s vision of private physical spaces necessary for creating art and that of some feminists of color such as Alice Walker, Ortiz Cofer, and Gloria Anzaldua. Both Woolf and these contemporary scholars agree on the importance of physical spaces for female artists. However, they disagree on the nature of these spaces. Woolf’s private physical space is a room with a lock on the door whereas these writers’ room is the kitchen table, the bus, or the welfare line. Walker and like-minded writers challenge the narrowness of Woolf’s room because her locked room is a luxury …

Development And Characterization Of Monolayer And Sub-Monolayer Intermediate Band Solar Cells, Najla Alnami Dec 2021

Development And Characterization Of Monolayer And Sub-Monolayer Intermediate Band Solar Cells, Najla Alnami

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Intermediate band solar cell (IBSC) is a new generation solar cell that is designed to overcome the main limitation of solar cell power conversion efficiency, which is the non-absorption of low photon energy. Experimental efforts towards fabricating high efficiency and low cost IBSC have not met the predictions of theoretical analysis. Existing implementations of the IBSC design using conventional Stranski-Krastanov (S-K) quantum dots (QDs) have resulted in a degradation in the solar cell device characteristics, which has been found to be caused by recapturing or trapping of excess carriers, low intermediate band material absorption, and increased recombination in the solar …

A New Dead-Time Determination Method For Gamma-Ray Detectors Using Attenuation Law, T. Akyurek

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study presents a new dead-time measurement method using the gamma attenuation law and generalized dead-time models for nuclear gamma-ray detectors. The dead-time of the NaI(Tl) detection system was obtained to validate the new dead-time determination method using very thin lead and polyethylene absorbers. Non-paralyzing dead-time was found to be 8.39 μs, and paralyzing dead-time was found to be 8.35 μs using lead absorber for NaI(Tl) scintillator detection system. These dead-time values are consistent with the previously reported dead-time values for scintillator detection systems. The gamma build-up factor's contribution to the dead-time was neglected because a very thin material was …

A Computational Evaluation Of Turbulence Generators In Co-Axial Ground Heat Exchangers, Rohit Ashok Rao Dec 2021

A Computational Evaluation Of Turbulence Generators In Co-Axial Ground Heat Exchangers, Rohit Ashok Rao

All Theses

The heat transfer of ground heat exchangers used in geothermal heating and cooling of buildings partially depends on the velocity, or more specifically the Reynolds number (Re), of the fluid circulating inside the geothermal pipe. Higher Re induces higher heat exchange, which can be achieved with higher fluid velocity. However, the pumping energy necessary to achieve the high fluid velocity is significant. Alternatively, turbulence generators (turbulators) in the form of helical wings inserted inside the pipe can generate and maintain a turbulent flow even at small fluid velocities, thereby inducing higher heat transfer. However, the inclusion of helical turbulators creates …

Developing A Computational Model For A Novel, Peristaltic-Style Ventricular Assist Device, Colin Pender Dec 2021

Developing A Computational Model For A Novel, Peristaltic-Style Ventricular Assist Device, Colin Pender

All Theses

Single ventricle heart defects are a serious subset of congenital heart defects (CHDs) caused by the underdevelopment of one side of the heart. Many of these univentricular CHDs are treated with a combination of palliative surgeries, culminating in the Fontan procedure. These Fontan patients lack cardiac support between the systemic vascular return and pulmonary system. Several researchers have suggested a cavopulmonary assist device to reverse the hemodynamic decay experienced by these patients.A peristaltic-style flow pump could be a possible solution as a cavopulmonary assist device. Such a novel flow pump uses balloons to produce forward flow by squeezing a graft …

Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C and vitamin B, exist in various food stuffs, including vegetables, fruits, fortified grains, milk, and meat, etc. Those vitamers play essential roles in many biochemical functions in human body, thus are significant components for maintaining human health. However, the stability of vitamers is susceptible to many factors, such as light, temperature, metal ions, levels of oxygen concentration, and moisture contents, etc. As vitamers are prone to further degradation, their bioactivities can be remarkably affected and even lost in food processing and food products. In this study, effect of different metal ions (i.e., Na+, K+, Ca2+, …

Reinforcement Learning Policy Gradient Methods For Reservoir Operation Management And Control, Sadegh Sadeghi Tabas Dec 2021

Reinforcement Learning Policy Gradient Methods For Reservoir Operation Management And Control, Sadegh Sadeghi Tabas

All Theses

Changes in demand, various hydrological inputs, and environmental stressors are among issues that water managers and policymakers face on a regular basis. These concerns have sparked interest in applying different techniques to determine reservoir operation policy and improve reservoir release decisions. As the resolution of the analysis rises, it becomes more difficult to effectively represent a real-world system using traditional approaches for determining the best reservoir operation policy. One of the challenges is the “curse of dimensionality,” which occurs when the discretization of the state and action spaces becomes finer or when more state or action variables are taken into …
