Xiaowei Su
Xiaowei Su
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
The allegory meaning of “Zhuangzi” is not completely consistent with the meaning of modern allegories. Under the system of his broad-allegory, self-made anthropomorphic names, carefully chosen or original animal names are the two main name types in his thoughts. Through this method of naming, Zhuangzi concretized abstract thoughts, allowing readers to use anthropomorphic names or animal names as media, which broadened the space for aesthetic imagination, triggered the match between emotion and reason, and enabled readers to experience ideological meaning beyond the literal meaning. In this process, Zhuangzi hid his own existence position, allowed the subjects of different anthropomorphic …

Yongxin Gu
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
The Stone Classics (石經) of Han (漢) and Wei (魏) survived little into Sui (隋) and Tang (唐), but the rubbings were preserved and handed down in good orders as an important reference to collating the content of the Classics (經). Editors of Palace Library (祕書省校書郎) and Proofreaders (正字) in Tang were specially responsible for collating the characters, among which the big-seal (大篆) and Bafen (八分) characters originated from the Stone Classics (so was Guwen 古文). Some Erudite of Calligraphy School (書學博士) in the Directorate of Education (國子監) also majored in the three styles of the Stone Classics (石經三體). …

Bingbing Zhao, Yucai Liu
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the editions of Liji CanDing (《禮記參訂》) written by Chen Zhan (陳鱣), a scholar in Qing Dynasty. Firstly, we found eight copies of the book through the investigation. Secondly, we find out the writing and circulation of these editions according to the literature records. Finally, we sort out the relationship between these editions through edition collation.
Gang Xu
Gang Xu
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
The real meaning of “standard pronunciation” appeared in the middle ages is to standardize the pronunciation of the literacy language by choosing out an authority dialect. The reason that YAN Zhitui choose two dialects, the Jin Ling dialect and the Luo Yang dialect, as the standard phonologies, is that the two phonologies are almost the same, so that they can be deemed as one phonology. Although there exists the received authority dialect, the real “standard pronunciation” at that time is a kind of “complex pronunciation” mixed with the speakers’ native dialects. The famous word “Luo Sheng Yong” does not …
Feng Wang
Feng Wang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Based on previous studies on Sino-Tibetan languages (mostly, the Bai language) by the author, this paper tends to provide some cues for studies on Chinese. The genetic structure of Sino-Tibetan languages offers the general background. Either Sino-Tibetan comparison or Chinese studies, may need a sustainable hypothesis. Either cognates or loanwords should be clearly identified with substantial evidence. Phonological categories, especially those of protolanguages, should be derived from sound correspondences, such as, the correspondences in the Bai language to Chinese departure tone and entering tone. The reconstruction of phonetic value may update with the advance of modern phonetics. For instance, …
Tong Zhao
Tong Zhao
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
With the method of dividing part of rhymes of Tangyun (唐韻), Gu Yanwu (顧炎武) established the first scientific system of Old Chinese rhyme group. However, because he did not get rid of the influence of the theory of near-rhyme (韻緩説), his ten groups are not proper rhyme groups. Jiang Yong (江永) abandoned the theory of near-rhyme and clarified the definition of rhyme group, which was a development of the study on Old Chinese phonology. However, due to the limitation of Mandarin pronunciation, Jiang’s division of rhyme groups is not perfective. Duan Yucai (段玉裁) broke the boundaries of Mandarin pronunciation, …

Jianping Xu
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
There are 3 versions of Shangshu (尚書) , including Jinwen Shangshu (今文尚書) inherited from Fu Sheng (伏生), Guwen Shangshu (古文尚書) excavated in the wall of Confucius’ old house and read by Kong An-guo, and the “liguding (隸古定)” edition which is also known as Faked Guwen Shangshu (僞古文尚書). While the first two didn’t come down, the last one was withal transformed to a kaishu (楷書) version by Wei Bao (衛包) in Tang Dynasty, which was written in Tangshijing (唐石經), the earliest intact edition of Shangshu that we can watch today. The scholars of Qing Dynasty researched the characters of Jinwen …

We use the recently developed finite cluster typical medium approach to study the Anderson localization transition in three dimensions. Applying our method to the box and binary alloy disorder distributions, we find a fast convergence with the cluster size. We demonstrate the importance of the typical medium environment and the non-local spatial correlations for the proper characterization of the localization transition. As the cluster size increases, our typical medium cluster method recovers the correct critical disorder strength for the transition. Our findings highlight the importance of the non-local cluster corrections for capturing the localization behavior of the mobility edge trajectories. …

Supermassive black holes and supernova explosions at the centres of active galaxies power cycles of outflowing and inflowing gas that affect galactic evolution and the overall structure of the Universe(1,2). While simulations and observations show that this must be the case, the range of physical scales (over ten orders of magnitude) and paucity of available tracers make both the simulation and observation of these effects difficult(3,4). By serendipity, there lies an active galaxy, Centaurus A (NGC 5128)(5,6), at such a close proximity as to allow its observation over this entire range of scales and across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Bridge Load Posting Prediction, Sabarethinam Kameshwar, Md. Manik Mia, Sai Bandaru
Bridge Load Posting Prediction, Sabarethinam Kameshwar, Md. Manik Mia, Sai Bandaru
Data
There are approximately 13,000 bridges in Louisiana facilitating movement of people, goods, and services. At present, about 12% of the bridges are load posted, i.e., they are deemed to lack the strength to safely carry all legal loads. With time bridges will age and deteriorate; at the same time, legal loads might increase. Load posted bridges disrupt the movement of goods and commerce. Therefore, objective of this research was to estimate the number of load posted bridges in Louisiana over the next 50 years. For this purpose, herein, a data based approach was used. For a given bridge type, the …
Catalyst Regeneration Of Rap-Binder In Asphalt, D. Spivak, Subramanian Balamurugan
Catalyst Regeneration Of Rap-Binder In Asphalt, D. Spivak, Subramanian Balamurugan
Data
Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) binders are difficult to reuse because they often contain associated/aggregated molecules with very high molecular weights. This is due to the polarity gained during oxidative aging, causing the aggregation to occur. These high molecular weight components are responsible for RAP binder’s increased viscosity and certain deteriorated rheological properties. One strategy to reuse RAP binder is to mix it with virgin asphalt binder and use this partially recycled mixture in asphalt. The RAP binder is usually improved before mixing by the addition of rejuvenators, softening agents, softer binders, and antioxidants to the asphalt binder mix to rebalance …

Smart Battery Management System For Electric Vehicles: Selflearning Algorithms For Simultaneous State And Parameter Estimation, And Stress Detection, Avimanyu Sahoo, Samir Ahmed
Data
The project proposes to develop parameter-varying SOH-coupled models for lithium-ion battery and self-learning algorithms to learn the model for simultaneous state and parameter estimation and fault detection. The traditional battery models use constant parameters, limiting their accuracy for predicting the state of the charge and health over the complete life-cycle. In practice, the battery parameters vary with the change in the state of charge and state of health. SOH-coupled models can be used to estimate the state of charge and health accurately. Further, obtaining the model parameters is also a challenging task for designing filters or observers for state estimation. …

Expanding The Concept Of Comprehensive Area Ratio Parameter To The South-Central States: Towards Simplifying The Structural Evaluation Of Flexible Pavements At The Network Level, Mena Souliman, Samer Dessouky, Nitish R. Bastola
Data
The surface deflection bowl data collected through falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is utilized by highway agencies in assessing the performance of the flexible pavement. However, a robust method to evaluate pavement sections utilizing FWD data from all the sensors is seldom developed. There is always a need for DOTs and highway agencies to have a simplified procedure, which can be directly implemented in agencies' databases. This study focuses on expanding and validating the concept of previously developed area ratio parameters towards the pavement section of South-Central States (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas) in effectively analyzing the pavement …

Organelle-specific autophagy directs degradation of eukaryotic organelles under certain conditions. Like other organelles, peroxisomes are subject to autophagic turnover at lysosomes. However, peroxisome autophagy (pexophagy) has yet to be analyzed in a live-animal system, limiting knowledge on its regulation during an animal's life. Here, we generated a tandem-fluorophore reporter that enabled real-time tracking of pexophagy in live Caenorhabditis elegans. We observed that pexophagy occurred at a population of non-canonical, tubular lysosomes specifically during starvation and aging. Remarkably, in these contexts, tubular lysosomes were the predominant type of lysosome in the intestine, transforming from vesicles. Though we found that peroxisomes were …

Hybridization and resulting introgression can play both a destructive and a creative role in the evolution of diversity. Thus, characterizing when and where introgression is most likely to occur can help us understand the causes of diversification dynamics. Here, we examine the prevalence of and variation in introgression using phylogenomic data from a large (1300+ species), geographically widespread avian group, the suboscine birds. We first examine patterns of gene tree discordance across the geographic distribution of the entire clade. We then evaluate the signal of introgression in a subset of 206 species triads using Patterson's D-statistic and test for associations …

For almost two decades, researchers have observed the preservation of the quantum statistical properties of bosons in a large variety of plasmonic systems. In addition, the possibility of preserving nonclassical correlations in light-matter interactions mediated by scattering among photons and plasmons stimulated the idea of the conservation of quantum statistics in plasmonic systems. It has also been assumed that similar dynamics underlie the conservation of the quantum fluctuations that define the nature of light sources. So far, plasmonic experiments have been performed in nanoscale systems in which complex multiparticle interactions are restrained. Here, we demonstrate that the quantum statistics of …

The quantum statistical fluctuations of electromagnetic fields establish a limit, known as the shot-noise limit, on the sensitivity of optical measurements performed with classical technologies. However, quantum technologies are not constrained by this shot-noise limit. In this regard, the possibility of using every photon produced by quantum sources of light to estimate small physical parameters, beyond the shot-noise limit, constitutes one of the main goals of quantum optics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a scalable protocol for quantum-enhanced optical phase estimation across a broad range of phases, with neither pre- nor post-selected measurements. This is achieved through the efficient design of …

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international, world-class experiment aimed at exploring fundamental questions about the universe that are at the forefront of astrophysics and particle physics research. DUNE will study questions pertaining to the preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of supernovae, the subtleties of neutrino interaction physics, and a number of beyond the Standard Model topics accessible in a powerful neutrino beam. A critical component of the DUNE physics program involves the study of changes in a powerful beam of neutrinos, i.e., neutrino oscillations, as the neutrinos propagate a long distance. …

Engineering and manipulation of unidirectional channels has been achieved in quantum Hall systems, leading to the construction of electron interferometers and proposals for low-power electronics and quantum information science applications. However, to fully control the mixing and interference of edge-state wave functions, one needs stable and tunable junctions. Encouraged by recent material candidates, here we propose to achieve this using an antiferromagnetic topological insulator that supports two distinct types of gapless unidirectional channels, one from antiferromagnetic domain walls and the other from single-height steps. Their distinct geometric nature allows them to intersect robustly to form quantum point junctions, which then …

Disorder in Weyl semimetals and superconductors is surprisingly subtle, attracting attention and competing theories in recent years. In this brief review, we discuss the current theoretical understanding of the effects of short-ranged, quenched disorder on the low energy-properties of three-dimensional, topological Weyl semimetals and superconductors. We focus on the role of non-perturbative rare region effects on destabilizing the semimetal phase and rounding the expected semimetal-to-diffusive metal transition into a cross over. Furthermore, the consequences of disorder on the resulting nature of excitations, transport, and topology are reviewed. New results on a bipartite random hopping model are presented that confirm previous …

Removal of dyes through adsorption from wastewater has gained substantial interest in recent years, especially in development of hydrogel-based adsorbents, owing to their easy use and economical nature. The aim of the present study was to design a super-adsorbent hydrogel based on sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) monomer for removal of dyes like methylene blue (MB). NaSS displays both an aromatic ring and strongly ionic group in its monomer structure that can enhance adsorption capacity. Poly (sodium styrene sulfonate-co-dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels were prepared by solution free radical polymerization using gelatin meth acryloyl (GelMA) as crosslinker, creating a highly porous, three-dimensionally crosslinked polymer …

The life assessment of materials that structurally shifts, creating mechanical corrosion and damage, during the operation at high temperatures is one of the most critical areas in the gas turbine power plants. This study investigates the widely used carbon steel grade 55 SA516 in the gas turbine blades at metallographic microscopic level and relating it to natural frequency and damping coefficients. In which heat treatments (aging tests) were applied and compared between multiple samples. The results show pearlite is broken up and converted into the ferrite and spherical carbides at grain boundaries. With an increase in microstructural variations in samples …

© 2021, The Author(s). Background: Multidimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy has emerged as an indispensable technique for resolving polymer structure and intermolecular packing in primary and secondary plant cell walls. Isotope (13C) enrichment provides feasible sensitivity for measuring 2D/3D correlation spectra, but this time-consuming procedure and its associated expenses have restricted the application of ssNMR in lignocellulose analysis. Results: Here, we present a method that relies on the sensitivity-enhancing technique Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) to eliminate the need for 13C-labeling. With a 26-fold sensitivity enhancement, a series of 2D 13C–13C correlation spectra were successfully collected using the unlabeled …

Numerous species of herbivorous insects are associated with soybeans, including the specialist velvetbean caterpillar (VBC), Anticarsia gemmatalis, and the generalist fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda. Expression of plant resistance is influenced by factors intrinsic to host plants, such as leaf age and plant stage, which can differentially affect specialist and generalist insects due to varying levels of plant defense and corresponding insect adaptation. In this study, four experiments were carried out to test the hypotheses that levels of antibiosis-resistance to VBC and FAW in the resistant genotype PI 227,687 and susceptible genotype IGRA RA 626 RR are related to leaf …
