Most industrial manufacturing or processing plants use bolted connections between pipes that transfer media from one location to another. Gaskets are often used to seal these systems as they offer elevated levels of leak mitigation; however, despite their nearly universal usage, the current understanding of gasket mechanics at the meso-scale is still limited. Contemporary gaskets feature viscoelastic materials, fillers, textures, and are fabricated at various thicknesses. They are used in a wide range of thermal, mechanical, chemical, and temporal conditions. The current work characterizes polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) gaskets made with several different filler materials and having vastly different geometries. The chemically …

The work presented herein consist of first studying the instantaneous properties of the detonation waves in a rotating detonation rocket engine by tracking each individual wave and recording its position, velocity, and peak intensity as it travels around the annulus. Results for a steady portion of a test performed on a rotating detonation rocket engine show that the wave properties exhibit oscillatory behavior. Results obtained from the rotating detonation rocket engine show that the properties are highly dependent on the azimuthal position. President Donald Trump refused to accept his ballot-box defeat, instead battling to overturn the election’s outcome. This dramatic public campaign was waged in state and federal courts, state legislatures, the offices of state and local election officials, the Department of Justice, and finally the halls of Congress, where on January 6, 2021, a mob incited by the President stormed the Capitol with the explicit goal of preventing the final counting of electoral votes for Joe Biden. America is engaged in a nationwide conversation about conscience exemptions from equality laws. So far, that conflict has been debated in terms of religious liberty. Courts have asked whether religious actors like Hobby Lobby and Masterpiece Cakeshop are entitled to exemptions from civil rights laws and whether any such exemptions count as establishments of religion. This framing overlooks an important issue, namely whether any such exemptions violate the Equal Protection Clause. This Article documents and evaluates tax obligations paid without cash, referred to as “in-kind tax paying.” Such forms of tax paying include paying federal income taxes by remitting a used flatbed truck to the IRS, paying local property taxes by working a few hours a month answering phones at city hall, and paying state excise taxes by conveying a proportion of all seashells farmed within a state to that state. These are not just hypotheticals, but forms of in-kind tax paying that occur in the United States throughout periods when many taxes are also paid in cash. Nevertheless, despite its …

In 2020, only 14.1% of lawyers identified as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), even though 40% of the United States population identified as such. Academics, activists, and attorneys point to a variety of reasons for this disproportion: underfunded public schools, astronomical student debt, standardized tests like the SAT and the LSAT, and many other institutional barriers that disproportionately affect members of the BIPOC community. This note_comment, however, focuses on the final hurdle that a BIPOC law graduate must overcome after a lifetime of persisting past the odds: the bar examination. To protect its legitimacy, a democratic system like the United States must ensure that the government is at least as accountable for its bad acts as any private actor. Thus, if the government wrongs a citizen via an unconstitutional or tortious act, that citizen should be able to sue the government for redress. It is deeply troubling, therefore, that most such lawsuits against the United States government are dead on arrival—no matter even if the lawsuit involves a government officer who violated a citizen’s constitutional rights. The recognition of actions in videos is an active research area in machine learning, relevant to multiple domains such as health monitoring, security and social media analysis. Zero-Shot Action Recognition (ZSAR) is a challenging problem in which models are trained to identify action classes that have not been seen during the training process. According to the literature, the most promising ZSAR approaches make use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Satellites are a useful way of gathering data at high altitudes. To be able to properly view the data, however, there are many important steps that one must take to ensure the data received is readable and usable. The data must be transmitted from the satellite to the ground, then must be decommuted and can then be used in various ways. This paper is an exploration of various ways of processing and visualizing data received from satellites, as well as various ways of using the data.

Over the past few months, the New York Census and Redistricting Institute has conducted the New York Public Mapping Project to coincide with the 2021 state redistricting cycle. Student teams from New York’s higher education institutions have been invited to participate in drafting maps for New York’s congressional, state senate, and state assembly districts and submit them to the State. Teams were able to use free online software and data, along with specialized training, to draw model maps that can be submitted to the state. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) requires parents to be involved in all parts of the education decision-making process, including the IEP meeting. Although there is a vast body of research about parents of students receiving special education services and their perspectives of the IEP meeting, little is known about parents’ perspectives of the IEP meeting while students are at a nonpublic school. Sin Yen Ling was born in Chinatown, Manhattan, she is daughter of immigrant parents who arrived to the U.S in the early 70s and worked in garment factories and restaurants. She's a former staff attorney at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) where she spent six years advocating for anti-Asian violence, racial profiling, and the deportations and detentions made against immigrants post 9/11. She founded ASPIRE, the first pan Asian undocumented youth group in the country. Tightening The Legal ‘Net’: The Constitution’S Supremacy Clause Straddle Of The Power Divide, Steven Ferrey

This article analyzes Constitutional Supremacy Clause tensions in preempting state law that addresses climate change and the rapid warming of the Planet. Net metering laws, enacted in 80% of U.S. states, are a primary legal mechanism to control and mitigate climate warming. This article analyzes three recent federal court decisions creating a preemptive Supremacy Clause stand-off between federal and state law and presents a detailed state-by-state analysis of which those 80% of states’ laws could be preempted by legal challenge.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of gamma and x-ray treatment on ‘Bartlett’ pear physiology during postharvest storage. Freshly harvested ‘Bartlett’ pears were irradiated with gamma irradiation at 0.412 and 0.819 kGy and x-ray irradiation at 1.03 and 1.94 kGy, then stored at 0-1 ⁰C and 95% relative humidity. The pears were removed from cold storage at 45 and 75 days and allowed to ripen at room temperature for four and two days, respectively. Respiration rate and ethylene production were measured during fruit ripening. Color, firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solids contents, and occurrence of superficial scald …

Iron is a ubiquitous earth element that participates in biogeochemical processes that occur in marine sediments. Microorganisms utilize iron for many purposes, including cell growth, conserving energy, and for maintaining metabolic activity. In coastal sedimentary settings, understanding the redox reactions involving ferric iron, Fe³⁺, and ferrous iron, Fe²⁺, in its solid phase and pore-water phases, respectively, enable an appreciation of biogeochemical transformations occurring in the coastal zone. Purpose: To determine whether elbow torque was associated with anatomic adaptations of the medial elbow following a season of competitive pitching.

Methods: Pitchers from 3 collegiate baseball teams were recruited during the preseason for participation. Before the season, pitchers were recorded throwing 5 "game-speed" fastball pitches from a standard distance off a mound while wearing a wearable sensor baseball compression sleeve that calculates elbow torque, arm speed, arm slot, and arm rotation. Participants subsequently underwent dynamic ultrasound imaging of the medial elbow, including measurements of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and ulnohumeral joint space to assess elbow laxity.
