Role Of Binder Compositions And Carbonate Polymorphs On The Performance Of Carbonation Activated Cementitious Composites, Mohammad Rakibul Islam Khan Dec 2021

Role Of Binder Compositions And Carbonate Polymorphs On The Performance Of Carbonation Activated Cementitious Composites, Mohammad Rakibul Islam Khan

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The most energy-intensive manufacturing industry in the US is the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) industry. This industry is responsible for 5-8% of global CO2 emissions caused by humans. The calcination of limestone to produce high lime calcium silicate and high manufacturing temperature (1450°C) are responsible for this significant amount of CO2 emissions. This CO2 footprint of the cement-based composites can be decreased by utilizing cementitious materials with low-lime calcium silicate. Low-lime calcium silicates are typically semi-hydraulic or non-hydraulic. As a result, it is necessary to activate those materials in order to increase their reactivity. Alkali activators, carbonation curing (CO2 curing), …

Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure – An Early Warning System, Md Aminul Islam Dec 2021

Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure – An Early Warning System, Md Aminul Islam

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Globally, slope failures cause substantial death tolls and economic loss. Embankments constructed on high plasticity clay are vulnerable to cyclic swelling and shrinkage when subjected to climate. Thus, over time, soil softens and reduces effective shear strength, and shrinkage cracks on slopes can act as pathways for rainfall infiltration, which increases pore water pressure and lowers the shear strength below critical levels, resulting in slope failure. This study aims to develop early warning criteria for rainfall-induced slope failure. Study areas were Tarrant, Dallas, Johnson, and Ellis, where soil types and a humid subtropical climate result in frequent slope failures. The …

Designing And Advancing Contrast Agents For Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence Imaging, Yang Liu Dec 2021

Designing And Advancing Contrast Agents For Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence Imaging, Yang Liu

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Fluorescence imaging is a remarkable tool for molecular targeting and multicolor imaging, but it suffers from poor resolution in centimeters-deep tissues. The recently developed ultrasound-switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging has overcome this challenge and achieved in vivo imaging with the help of the indocyanine green (ICG)-encapsulated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (ICG-PNIPAM) contrast agent. As USF imaging advances, there is a great demand to expand the contrast agent bank so that applications can be achieved using different types of contrast agents. Also, there is a need to improve the current ICG-PNIPAM nanogel. This study focused on improving the ICG-PNIPAM nanogel, formulating a novel contrast agent, …

Assessment Of Stormwater Infrastructure For Mitigating Flooding And Non-Point Source Pollution, Helia Farzaneh Dec 2021

Assessment Of Stormwater Infrastructure For Mitigating Flooding And Non-Point Source Pollution, Helia Farzaneh

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Flooding is the top natural hazard impacting coastal and inland communities in Texas. Beyond its destructive impact on rising waters in communities, flooding-induced stormwater negatively affects the quality of large bodies of water. Stormwater runs over land, washes off pollutants, and deposits them into rivers which causes water quality issues in bays and estuaries. In addition, the stormwater increases nutrients, sediments, oxygen-demanding substances, pathogens, and toxins which results in hypoxia in the aquatic system. During the last 5-6 years, severe storm events such as Tropical Storm Beta (September 2020), Tropical Storm Imelda (September 2019), Hurricane Harvey (August 2017) have caused …

Fire Performance Of Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Self-Consolidating Concrete (Hfrscc) With Glass Pozzolan, Rishabh Kumar

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

This research focuses on the effects of hybridizing self-consolidating concrete (SCC) using steel (SF) and polypropylene (PP) fibers to study their benefits post-fire exposure. In an attempt to reduce cement’s environmental impacts and to make concrete more sustainable, this research also studies the substitution of cement using glass pozzolan. Limited research has been done in this regard previously, hence this research makes an effort to bridge the enormous knowledge gap. No research has reported tensile, compressive, and flexural strength of SCC with hybrid fibers and glass pozzolan, making this research unique. Based on previous research, the replacement rate of cement …

Performance Evaluation And Retrofitting Options For An Impact Damaged Non-Composite Steel Girder Bridge, Mohd Mezanur Rahman Dec 2021

Performance Evaluation And Retrofitting Options For An Impact Damaged Non-Composite Steel Girder Bridge, Mohd Mezanur Rahman

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has rated about 32% of total bridges in US as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. One of the most frequently encountered issues for this deficiency is the impact created by cars that exceed the posted clearance for a bridge. Impact damage leads to concrete spalling or cracking, exposed or broken reinforcement/prestressing strands, global and local buckling of the structural member or piercing through the steel girder. For Example, St. Francis Bridge (North Bound) carrying St. Francis Avenue over I-30 east of downtown Dallas was impact damaged by an eighteen-wheeler carrying a heavy-duty wrecker on 29th …

Learning To Swim: An Exploration Of The Terrestrial To Aquatic Transition In Elapids (Squamata: Elapidae), Justin Lawrence Jacobs Dec 2021

Learning To Swim: An Exploration Of The Terrestrial To Aquatic Transition In Elapids (Squamata: Elapidae), Justin Lawrence Jacobs

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Elapidae is an extremely diverse family of venomous snake that have a nearly global distribution. To conquer such wide swaths of territory the initially fossorial snakes evolved many successful strategies pertaining to reproduction, locomotion, and predation techniques. Here I explore the multiple transitions of terrestrial to aquatic life through a high-density 3D geometric morphometric methodology conducted upon five large datasets of computed tomography (CT) data. This occurs primarily through the comparison of the genus of New World coralsnakes, Micrurus, with sea snakes of Hydrophis and Laticauda and is informed by a scale created to document and classify the disparate life …

Diversity Of The Fanged-Frog Complex, Limnonectes Kuhlii (Anura: Dicroglossidae) On The Mountainous Regions Of Java And Sumatra, Indonesia, Thornton Robert Larson

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The cryptic species complex, Limnonectes kuhlii, previously was considered to have a large range across Southeast Asia. Recent works have started to identify species within the complex using primarily genetic methodologies. The largest absence in elucidating these relationships comes down to sampling. Traditionally sampling across Southeast Asia has been challenging, limiting sampling across the entirety of a species range. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Indonesia. Indonesia has been highlighted as a biogeographical hotspot for species despite limited sampling on any of the main or smaller islands across the archipelago. Countries such as Malaysia and Papua New Guinea that …

A Quantification Of Magnitude In The Writing Of James Baldwin: A Digital Recovery Work, Robert Tate Morrison Dec 2021

A Quantification Of Magnitude In The Writing Of James Baldwin: A Digital Recovery Work, Robert Tate Morrison

English Theses - Archive

This thesis seeks to utilize a distant reading of seventeen essays written by James Baldwin alongside sustained close readings of three topics within those essays in order to understand why Baldwin has maintained increased popularity when the original historical context of the essays resulted in fame and critical acclaim, but not major literary awards. The author ran these seventeen essays through topic modeling software, and then engaged with critical and scholarly close readings to establish qualitative and quantitative explanations of patterns that exist in Baldwin’s work. By connecting the findings of work under both the digital humanities as well as …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Development: A Narrative Inquiry Examining Insights From Middle School Teachers, Julie Hatling

Dissertations and Theses

Throughout their careers, teachers seek professional growth opportunities to continually improve their craft. This quest has resulted in various learning experiences for teachers that have impacted their practice in differing ways. Bayar (2014) writes that schools traditionally provide training for teachers, professional development (PD), to help in-service teachers grow as professionals. To gain further insight into the topic of teacher PD, this narrative inquiry sought to obtain a better understanding of PD based on teachers’ perceptions of their past PD experiences and how those experiences impacted their professional practice. This study was guided by a central question and sub-questions. The …

Rural Leaders’ Experiences Implementing Fape For Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Jessica J. Vogel

Dissertations and Theses

To provide effective leadership and ensure students with intellectual disabilities are receiving an appropriate education, principals must understand the substantial needs of these students. The experiences of rural principals’ leadership in providing a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for students with intellectual disabilities are not well known. In this study, I sought to describe the experiences of remote rural principals in South Dakota in providing FAPE for students with intellectual disabilities. Eight principals of remote rural school districts, with at least one year of leadership experience, participated in this study. This phenomenological study utilized structured interviews to collect data. …

Intellectual Property Norms In American Theater, Kelly Gregg Dec 2021

Intellectual Property Norms In American Theater, Kelly Gregg

University of Chicago Law Review

When a musical opens on Broadway, what aspects of the production are covered by copyright’s protection of “dramatic works”? The script clearly is (although policing infringement is nigh impossible), but courts have yet to address whether the work of the director or designers should be afforded copyright protections. Nonetheless, within the close-knit professional New York theater community, rarely do artists significantly copy the work of others. This Comment argues that this is because the community has developed its own welfare-maximizing norms to address intellectual property. However, looking at larger cross-sections of American theater (such as all professional theaters independent of …

From Support To Solidarity: Recognizing The Nonhierarchical Mentoring Environment Within, Bridgette Flamenco, Wendy Lee Spaček, Erin A. Sulla

Library Scholarship

The 2021 Washington Library Association (WLA) Conference’s shift from in-person to virtual was a decision that felt appropriate and not at all surprising, given the uncertainty surrounding large in-person events due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We, a group of three early-career librarians at Central Washington University (CWU), had been eager to set off on a mini road trip together to bond, gain insight into the field of librarianship, and network with our peers at other institutions. When the conference changed to a virtual format, we decided to make a collaborative document to share our notes on the conference sessions, …

Terrapin Station: Individual, Sex, And Site Factors Related To Turtle Growth Variability, Leigh Anne Harden, Stephen R. Midway, J. Whitfield Gibbons Dec 2021

Terrapin Station: Individual, Sex, And Site Factors Related To Turtle Growth Variability, Leigh Anne Harden, Stephen R. Midway, J. Whitfield Gibbons

Faculty Publications

For many turtle species, life history traits such as body size, age at maturity, and somatic growth rate can vary among individuals and habitats and between the sexes. Therefore, it is important to consider factors that may influence growth when modeling (somatic) growth for turtles. Long-term capture-mark-recapture studies lend themselves to studying somatic growth in turtles due to the repeated measurements of individuals over time. We used a long-term dataset to examine growth patterns of philopatric Diamondback Terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, USA. We used a hierarchical three-parameter von Bertalanffy model to estimate individual growth of 44 …

Shark Side Of The Moon: Are Shark Attacks Related To Lunar Phase?, Lindsay A. French, Stephen R. Midway, David H. Evans, George H. Burgess

Faculty Publications

Animals across taxa have shown behaviors linked to moon phase (or the proxy of lunar illumination), and marine organisms are well-documented to calibrate certain activities with the moon. Few studies have looked at a possible connection between moon phase and shark attacks on humans, and the results have been preliminary or lacking relationships. We used nearly 50 years of shark attack data from across the globe to test for a relationship between shark attacks and moon phase. We examined factors of geography, shark species, and outcome of attack. From 12 relationships that we tested (totaling 120 comparisons), we found 12 …

Tropical Cyclones Cumulatively Control Regional Carbon Fluxes In Everglades Mangrove Wetlands (Florida, Usa), Xiaochen Zhao, Victor H. Rivera-Monroy, Luis M. Farfán, Henry Briceño, Edward Castañeda-Moya, Rafael Travieso, Evelyn E. Gaiser

Faculty Publications

Mangroves are the most blue-carbon rich coastal wetlands contributing to the reduction of atmospheric CO2 through photosynthesis (sequestration) and high soil organic carbon (C) storage. Globally, mangroves are increasingly impacted by human and natural disturbances under climate warming, including pervasive pulsing tropical cyclones. However, there is limited information assessing cyclone’s functional role in regulating wetlands carbon cycling from annual to decadal scales. Here we show how cyclones with a wide range of integrated kinetic energy (IKE) impact C fluxes in the Everglades, a neotropical region with high cyclone landing frequency. Using long-term mangrove Net Primary Productivity (Litterfall, NPPL) data (2001–2018), …

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasing globally in frequency, persistence, and geo-graphic extent, posing a threat to ecosystem and human health. To date, no occurrences of marine phycotoxins have been recorded in Mozambique, which may be due to absence of a monitoring program and general awareness of potential threats. This study is the first documentation of neurotoxin, domoic acid (DA), produced by the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia along the east coast of Africa. Coastal Inhambane Province is a biodiversity hotspot where year-round Rhincodon typus (whale shark) sightings are among the highest globally and support an emerging ecotourism industry. Geochemical chronologies were constructed from otoliths of adult Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) to investigate the timing of age-specific egress of juveniles from coastal nurseries in the East China Sea or Sea of Japan to offshore waters of the Pacific Ocean. Element:Ca chronologies were developed for otolith Li, Mg, Mn, Zn, Sr, and Ba, and our assessment focused on the section of the otolith corresponding to the age-0 to age-1 + interval. Next, we applied a common time-series approach to geochemical profiles to identify divergences presumably linked to inshore-offshore migrations. Conspicuous geochemical shifts were detected during the juvenile interval for Mg:Ca, …

Modern biological approaches generate volumes of multi-dimensional data, offering unprecedented opportunities to address biological questions previously beyond reach owing to small or subtle effects. A fundamental question in plant biology is the extent to which below-ground activity in the root system influences above-ground phenotypes expressed in the shoot system. Grafting, an ancient horticultural practice that fuses the root system of one individual (the rootstock) with the shoot system of a second, genetically distinct individual (the scion), is a powerful experimental system to understand below-ground effects on above-ground phenotypes. Previous studies on grafted grapevines have detected rootstock influence on scion phenotypes …
