Trumped: Intentional Voter Suppression In The Wake Of The 2020 Election, Wesley N. Watts
Trumped: Intentional Voter Suppression In The Wake Of The 2020 Election, Wesley N. Watts
Mercer Law Review
There was nothing normal about the year 2020. For just the third time in history, an American president was impeached, world icons John Lewis and Kobe Bryant passed away, the country of Australia was devastated by brushfires that burned some forty-six million acres of land, and The United States faced a racial reckoning the likes of which had been unseen since the Civil Rights era. All of this took place on the heels of a global pandemic that has killed more than 4.3 million people to date and has infected 10% of the global population. These events of the year …

Uncloaking The Invisible Hand: Reintroducing Fairness To Antitrust Analyses, Jennifer Coté
Uncloaking The Invisible Hand: Reintroducing Fairness To Antitrust Analyses, Jennifer Coté
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Antitrust doctrine adopted the Chicago School’s narrow consumer welfare and economic efficiency analysis in the early 1970s. Since then, enforcement has drastically reduced, and market concentration has substantially increased. But the Chicago School is not true to either the intent of the original antitrust legislation – the Sherman Act – nor to the ‘economist’ they adopted as their ultimate advocate, Adam Smith. The Chicago School has cherry picked Adam Smith’s written works to support market deregulation and the existence of a perfectly efficient, rational marketplace, but this is not an accurate rendition of his works. Rather, Adam Smith was a …

Implications Of Condition Shifts On Shallow Lakes, Alicia Skolte
Implications Of Condition Shifts On Shallow Lakes, Alicia Skolte
Biology Graduate Theses
Shallow lakes have undergone condition shifts throughout time by natural causes, management actions, or a combination of the two. Because shallow lakes are especially vulnerable to shifts towards turbid conditions, management actions on shallow lakes have focused on water level/retainment, biomanipulations, the management/removal of non-native species, and land-use changes. This review compiles a summary on ecosystem shifts including a discussion on the frequency of shifts historically and the importance and causes of those shifts, trophic cascades, and the influence of introduced species in shallow lakes. This review will then examine case-studies of management-linked shifts and explain current shift theory. Next, …

Scalable Optimization Method For Generator Scheduling Under Uncertainty, Edward Arthur Quarm Jnr
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Scalable optimization methods for power system operation has been subject of research over the last 60 years. State-of-the-art methods in this research area is yet to yield the scalability desired by system operators for practical operation of electric grids. This article-based dissertation makes three significant contributions. A scalable computational method is developed to tackle a mixed-integer problem commonly referred to as Stochastic Security-Constrained Unit Commitment (SSCUC), the output of which will be beneficial to Independent System Operators to manage electric grids. Secondly, an improved model for time-progressive contingencies in security-constrained optimization problems is presented. This modeling approach is more realistic …

Data mining is the process of extracting useful information from large amounts of data. Data mining has been around for a long time, and there are many multiple methods of performing data mining. However, the abundance of data that has become available in the last decade has made it possible to mine through this data to uncover important patterns and sequences. The relationship between variables and the way in which they can lead to a specific outcome is an interesting area of research. Today's healthcare industry faces a number of challenges. Providers must reduce costs, improve transparency, and improve the …
Adaptive Human-Robot Motion Transfer For Complete Body Imitation, Francisco Villa
Adaptive Human-Robot Motion Transfer For Complete Body Imitation, Francisco Villa
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Programming robot systems to perform certain tasks is a big challenge especially if such programming is to be performed by persons who are not experts in robotics. For example, when programming a robot to serve as an exercise trainer, the person defining the motions might more naturally be a person in the exercise domain rather than a robotics expert. To address this, this thesis investigates programming by demonstration or teleoperation using full direct body motion. The goal is to reproduce gaits, gestures, and postures on a humanoid robot from observed human demonstrations. Fine motor movements such as movement of fingers …

Translation Of Array-Based Loop Programs To Optimized Sql-Based Distributed Programs, Md Hasanuzzaman Noor
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Most programs written to operate on data are usually expressed in terms of array operations in sequential loops. However, these programs do not scale to large amount of data generated by scientific experiments and industrial and commercial markets. Given the success of machine learning algorithms on large amount of data and the recent shift of industries to data-driven decision making, the data scientists who are not familiar with Big Data frameworks have to rewrite the sequential programs to distributed data-parallel programs by hand. We present a novel framework, called SQLgen, that automatically translates sequential loops to distributed data-parallel programs. SQLgen …

Language Pre-Training And Auxiliary Tasks For Vision And Language Navigation, Saumya Bhatt
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
The Vision and Language Navigation task came to life from the idea that we can build a robot or an autonomous system that can be instructed in human language and that will navigate using the instructions given. For example, we tell the agent to “Go down past some room dividers toward a glass top desk and turn into the dining area. Wait next to the large glass dining table” and not only does it reach the goal state but it follows the instructions while navigating. With the current developments, this may not seem like a distant problem anymore and in …

Characterization And Enhancement Of Fatigue And Fracture Properties In Thermoplastic Fff Parts Using In-Situ Annealing, Manjarik Mrinal
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Fused filament fabrication (FFF) show high anisotropy and reduced mechanical properties as compared to conventional manufacturing techniques. This happens due to the poor interlaminar bonding between the layers, as a result of premature halt of bond healing process. Previous research works show multiple approaches to improve the bond quality to enhance the mechanical properties of FFF parts, however these are complex and expensive techniques. In this work a novel print head assembly is presented to offer a simple and effective solution by applying a thermal field to the part as it is being printed to preheat the previously deposited layer, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Graphene-Reinforced Polymer Filaments For Additive Manufacturing, Sean Menezes
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a popular 3D printing process which uses a spool of thermoplastic polymer filament that is melted by the movable extruder printer head onto the bed to generate the required shape. The most used polymer filaments in FDM are Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Poly Lactic Acid (PLA). However, these conventional polymer filaments have lower mechanical strength and are more susceptible to cracking as the cooler parts of the printed part shrink so much that they cause cracks to develop, leading to warping. The current investigation focuses on the synthesis of graphene, synthesis of polymer filaments …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortalities worldwide as well as in the United States. Early diagnosis and prediction of these diseases is critical to mitigate the risks to the patient. A common method to assess a person’s heart health is through the use of cuff type oscillometric devices placed on the arm of the patient. As the mean pressure in the cuff is increased the blood flow in the brachial artery becomes blocked. When the cuff pressure is reduced the blood starts flowing again; during this cycle, pressure fluctuations in the cuff are measured using a pressure transducer. …

In this thesis, we consider the problem of n mobile agents carrying a gripper, with the objective of gripping a moving circular target. The target may move with constant velocity, or even maneuver. We develop guidance laws by which the agents can first cage the target and subsequently grip it. These guidance laws are developed based on a collision cone framework, using which the mobile agents cooperatively steer their velocity vectors in an appropriate fashion to meet their objective. It is assumed that each of the mobile agents are equipped with a lidar sensor, using which they obtain the range …

Effects Of Il-10 On Local Cell Populations And Functional Recovery Following Vml Injury, Zain Blackwell
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Volumetric muscle loss (VML) injuries are prevalent in both military personnel suffering from battlefield related incidents, and civilians following severe motor accidents. Despite its prevalence, VML has no pro-regenerative clinical treatments in place to recover some of the functional capabilities of the damaged muscle. Free flap grafting, debridement of damaged tissue, and physical therapy are the only clinical standards available that offer little functional recovery benefits, even after years of consistent treatment. In this study, anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 in conjunction with autologous minced muscle was assessed as a possible treatment for VML injuries and its influences on cellular behavior within …
