Spiral Ism Band Antenna Design For Biomedical Applications, Marwah Malik Hassooni, Jabir S. Aziz, Ashwaq Q. Hameed
Engineering and Technology Journal
This paper introduces a dual-band spiral-shaped implantable antenna engineered for medical applications, addressing the growing demand for reliable subcutaneous implantable monitoring systems. The proposed antenna is designed to operate within the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band centered at 2400 MHz, leveraging a highly compact form factor with total dimensions of 6 mm × 5 mm × 0.254 mm, yielding a minimal volumetric footprint of 7.62 mm3. The structure is fabricated on the RO3010 substrate, characterized by a relative permittivity of ϵr = 10.2, a loss tangent of tanδ= 0.0022, and a substrate thickness of 0.254 mm. …

The weakness of the energy transmission system is one of the primary challenges facing Iraq, significantly contributing to the country’s economic crisis due to its reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The rise in oil prices increased electricity production costs. These issues, including weak transmission, can be addressed by integrating renewable energy with the grid. This research presented a methodology for designing and simulating a 25 MW grid-connected photovoltaic station. It used the PVsyst System program to predict energy production and AutoCAD to develop the layout. The steps included evaluating the site, selecting solar units, configuring inverters, and integrating them with …

Adaptive Wheelchair Control Using Fuzzy Logic And Eye Gaze Metrics, Hanan J. Abdulkareem, Sadik K. Gharghan, Saad Mutashar
Engineering and Technology Journal
Intelligent wheelchair systems are crucial for enabling hands-free mobility in individuals with severe physical impairments. This paper presents a novel eye-movement-based wheelchair control system that integrates camera-based gaze detection with fuzzy logic decision-making. By analyzing the Eye Aspect Ratio (EAR), along with horizontal and vertical gaze ratios, the system interprets real-time eye movements into five navigational commands: “Move Forward,” “Move Backward,” “Move Left,” “Move Right,” and “Stop.” A time threshold mechanism (2–5 seconds) ensures intentionality by filtering out involuntary gaze fluctuations. The novelty of this work lies in its hybrid use of real-time video processing and fuzzy logic reasoning to …

Undergraduate Engagement In Neutron Scattering As A Pathway To U.S. Competitiveness And A Diverse Scientific Workforce, Hillary L. Smith
Undergraduate Engagement In Neutron Scattering As A Pathway To U.S. Competitiveness And A Diverse Scientific Workforce, Hillary L. Smith
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Engaging undergraduate students in neutron scattering experiments through beamtime trips, student internships, or class visits is a powerful driver of scientific progress in the United States. These experiences provide hands-on exposure to advanced instrumentation, mentorship from diverse scientists, and insight into large-scale research infrastructure. By contributing meaningfully to proposal development, sample preparation, data collection, and data analysis, students develop confidence, scientific identity, and a sense of belonging, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Early engagement cultivates a skilled and motivated scientific workforce, strengthens the capabilities and mission of national laboratories, and ensures continued U.S. leadership in discovery and innovation.

Neuromodulation In Olfactory Networks: Inferring Circuit Motifs And Predicting Behavioral Outcomes From Neural Response Changes, Yelyzaveta Bessonova
Neuromodulation In Olfactory Networks: Inferring Circuit Motifs And Predicting Behavioral Outcomes From Neural Response Changes, Yelyzaveta Bessonova
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Many organisms rely on olfaction to navigate their environment in response to surrounding chemical cues. Within the olfactory system, first, external signals are transduced into neural activity patterns that drive a diverse array of behavioral responses. However, sensory processing alone does not fully account for this variability. Fluctuations in neuromodulator levels are equally critical in shaping how olfactory information is encoded and translated into behavior. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate how changes in the neurochemistry within the olfactory circuit influence neural signaling and, ultimately, behavioral responses. To achieve this, I investigated how three neuromodulators: serotonin, dopamine, and …

Emotional Branch Termination And False Fantasy Collapse: A Structural Specification Of Computational Resource Restitution In Interpersonal Systems, Griselda Poe
Publications and Research
This paper specifies the structural protocol for communication within interpersonal systems by focusing on branch generation mechanisms and computational resource allocation. Conventional interpersonal communication often relies on emotional modulation, which obscures established constraints and triggers the generation of Emotional Branches (EB) within the recipient’s internal model. These branches function as unresolved parallel processing tasks that persistently occupy working memory, leading to a state of non-computability termed False Fantasy (FF). To resolve this, the study introduces Emotional Branch Termination (EBT)—a termination operation that outputs only constraints, facts, and procedures while excluding emotional modifiers. By halting the supply of EBs, EBT triggers …

Interview With Orca Award Winner Michael James, Unl Textile Clothing & Design; Abstract Quilted Fabric Artist, Mark A. Griep, Michael James
UNL ORCA Interview Series
Prof. Michael James was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Something in his youth must have sparked an interest in the arts because he earned a bachelor and master of fine arts, both with an emphasis on painting and printmaking. His bachelor’s was from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and his master’s was from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After graduation, he embarked on a 26-year career as an independent studio quilt designer and maker. His career took a new direction in Spring 2000 when he was a Visiting Lecturer in Textiles at his Dartmouth Alma Mater. In Fall 2000, …

Decentralising Environmental Public Spending: From Political Platforms To Actual Policies In The Eu Countries, Federica Lanterna, Giovanni Marin, Agnese Sacchi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Environmental challenges increasingly shape political discourses across Europe, yet their influence on actual environmental governance remains unclear. This paper examines the political economy mechanisms linking environmental change, party platforms, and the decentralisation of environmental protection expenditure in 27 EU member states from 2002 to 2022. We distinguish between political signalling – the commitments parties make in electoral manifestos – and policy implementation, measured through actual decentralised environmental spending. Our results reveal a sharp asymmetry: while extreme events substantially increase the salience of environmental protection in party platforms, they do not translate into changes in the territorial allocation of environmental expenditure. …
