Though removed from the time of the modernists, Raymond Carver shares similar interests with Woolf and Kafka in his late century story "Cathedral," as he investigates art's capacity for creating meaning, or "re-enchanting." While Carver investigates the function of art in a chaotic world, his story does not feature a central artist figure or a hierarchical social structure surrounding the artistic process, but rather an organic artistic experience which creates community among the characters. In this way, "Cathedral" can be seen as a mediation between Woolf's and Kafka's distinct, if not opposing, reactions to Matthew Arnold's prophecy that "most of …

Auditing GenAI literature search workflows, this article evaluates whether AI-assisted literature review retrieval is traceable, metadata-accurate, and reproducible under student-facing conditions. Across four systems and two retrieval postures, the study finds that natural-language prompting often produces unstable or unverifiable citation outputs, while Boolean translation improves auditability but not full reproducibility. The article offers a practical framework for accountable AI-assisted literature search, citation verification, DOI traceability, and transparent evidence retrieval.

Conservation science and practice mirror racist notions of colonialism, prolonging a cycle in which policies and programs disregard land access. Many conservation leaders operate from a culture of land exclusion, focusing on nature to generate wealth, deeming the number of individuals removed from the commons as progress. By the turn of the 21^st Century, government conservation policies compensated private actors and groups for voluntarily adopting market-based mechanisms aimed at land conservation. Despite the emergence of various conservation programs, the data show that White Americans primarily benefit from federal conservation payments. Heavy metals are natural components of the environment and can be relatively non-impactful in low concentrations. However, high concentrations of heavy metal toxicity can result in air, water, and soil contamination that adversely impacts environmental, human, and wildlife health. This study focuses on detecting the presence of heavy metals in soil, Loblolly Pine tree bark, and wood core samples from sites near a landfill in the Tallassee, Alabama, community and a post-agricultural site in Tuskegee, Alabama. The objectives of this paper are to identify the constraints faced by SRI adopters, estimate the food security index, and assess the impact of in-depth adoption of SRI on smallholder farm households’ food security. “Clemson Spineless” and “Jambalaya” okra were grown in a Tunnel House and field to compare yield and other growth parameters. A split-plot design with three replications/treatment was used; the Tunnel House and field were main plots, and varieties split plot. Plant height was significantly taller, and pod harvesting began two weeks earlier in the Tunnel House. Yield showed no significant differences between varieties, and Tunnel House vs. field-produced okra. However, “Clemson Spineless” produced 9% higher pod yield in the Tunnel House than “Jambalaya,” which had 23% higher field yield than “Clemson Spineless.” An enterprise budget analysis showed that Tunnel House …

The genus Aethionema in Türkiye was investigated through a comprehensive taxonomic study including morphological, seed micromorphological, and molecular methods. This study led to the synonymization of 11 taxa: A. annuum, A. dincii subsp. baytopiae, A. alidaghenicum, A. bingoelicum, A. dumelicum, A. ertughrulii, A. fruticulosum, A. gypsicola, A. huber-morathii, A. maraschicum, and A. turanicum. Conversely, seven species were resurrected: A. levandowskyi, A. sintenisii, A. acarii, A. pallidiflorum, A. pseudoarmenum, A. pulchellum, and A. recurvum. The landlord contended a VAWA notice served in a prior, discontinued proceeding should apply. The court rejected this, holding that VAWA requires strict compliance and a new notice with "any notification of eviction." A discontinued case is annulled as if it never commenced, thus a prior notice cannot 'survive'. Finding the lack of a current VAWA notice a fatal defect in the predicate notice, the court granted the tenant's motion and dismissed the proceeding without prejudice.

By releasing greenhouse gases and particulates like black carbon, alumina, and water vapor, rocket launches not only contribute to climate change but also accelerate stratospheric ozone depletion. The U.S. aviation industry encountered similar environmental challenges decades ago, which eventually prompted legal and policy frameworks to curtail aviation emission through sustainable fuel technologies. Medical drone delivery (MDD), defined as the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles to transport medical products, is an emerging technological innovation responding to persistent health supply chain challenges in rural and low-resource settings. Within sub-Saharan Africa, MDD systems have demonstrated large-scale success in improving key health outcomes, health supply chain efficiency, and reductions in medical product stockouts and wastage. The transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block has been suggested as a pain management adjunct for laparoscopic surgical approaches. The administration of a TAP block involves using ultrasound guidance to inject local anesthetic into the fascial plane between the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles. Current evidence demonstrates that the utilization of TAP blocks lead to lower postoperative pain scores and overall lower narcotic consumption in the postoperative period. A 64-year-old female presented for a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy. Radish is a widely cultivated vegetable with known medicinal value and produces siliques that differ significantly in number and size. The present study compares normal Duanye-13 radish (CK-type) siliques with mutant radish siliques induced by chemical mutagenesis at the young (YS), short (SS), and long (LS) silique stages. Differences in long noncoding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA) expression were investigated using high-throughput RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses, revealing 45 324 new lncRNAs in radish siliques. lncRNA expression was higher in YS and LS mutant lines than in CK-type lines, and expression in SS mutants tended to be lower than in CK-type lines. …

Cystic fibrosis (CF) and sickle cell disease (SCD) are associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and this risk is exacerbated by hospitalization. VTE prophylaxis nonadministration is a VTE risk factor. The objective of this study was to characterize VTE prophylaxis nonadministration among patients with either CF or SCD compared with medically ill patients without CF or SCD. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of hospitalized patients who were prescribed at least 2 doses of pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis. Resistance to HIF-2α inhibitors such as Belzutifan underscores the need to better understand how HIF-2α is transcriptionally regulated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Here, we uncover a cytokine-driven enhancer mechanism that sustains HIF-2α expression through the JAK1-STAT3 signaling pathway. Using a genome-wide CRISPR screen in VHL-deficient ccRCC cells, we identified SOCS3 as a key negative regulator of HIF-2α. Mechanistically, loss of SOCS3 activates JAK1-STAT3 signaling, leading to the recruitment of STAT3 to distal enhancers upstream of EPAS1 that physically loop to its promoter to drive HIF-2α transcription. Located just south of downtown Portland, Ross Island is a 400-acre landscape of islands and a lagoon shaped by decades of sand and gravel mining. It is now one of the lower Willamette River’s clearest opportunities for large-scale ecological restoration, tribal stewardship, and lasting public benefit. But that opportunity is at risk under a private ownership structure in which reclamation remains unfinished and long-term stewardship has not been secured. At the same time, emerging coordination opportunities with related cleanup efforts could either advance reclamation and stewardship or create further delay and uncertainty, underscoring the need for clear state leadership. Background/Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide and causes cervical cancer in women. Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are particularly susceptible to this virus. An effective vaccine against high-risk HPV genotypes is available. This study sought to evaluate barriers to HPV vaccination in HIV-positive female patients between the ages of 18 and 65 in a county clinic in Houston.
