This dataset supports the production, characterization, and biological validation of a novel recombinant hagfish intermediate filament (rHIF) protein functionalized with spider silk motifs (rHIF-alpha-GRGGL). The data demonstrates a scalable bioprocess resulting in a 7.76 g/L yield, high structural alpha-helicity (77.2%), and significant support for N2a cells.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains a lethal tumor, largely due to robust mechanisms that prevent effective induction of cell death. Ferroptosis, a form of iron-dependent cell death, is a promising vulnerability in GBM. Here, we demonstrate that lipocalin-2 (LCN2) suppresses ferroptosis in GBM cells via the receptor tyrosine kinase AXL. LCN2 was elevated in GBM cells compared to lower-grade tumor and non-transformed cells, and Lcn2 knockdown impaired GBM cell fitness and growth in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, Lcn2 knockdown triggered ferroptosis, which was specifically rescued with ferroptosis inhibitors but not apoptosis or necroptosis inhibitors. BACKGROUND: Romantic relationships are important contexts for substance use and emotional well-being. We tested the hypotheses that (i) genetic predispositions for alcohol consumption would be positively associated with partner substance use, (ii) partner substance use would moderate genetic influences on one's own alcohol outcomes, and (iii) partner discordance in substance use would be associated with lower emotional well-being and relationship quality.

The concept of a maritime community with a shared destiny proposed by Chairman Xi is China's wisdom and approach for maintaining global maritime peace, promoting ocean development, enhancing global maritime governance, and advancing maritime security cooperation. This should guide efforts to tailor security cooperation relationships based on different targets. We need to broaden our thinking and innovate mechanisms for maritime security cooperation, take proactive steps to provide maritime public security goods, strengthen coordinated implementation of external maritime military assistance, and promote the creation of a new landscape in maritime military security cooperation.

Toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8) gain-of-function (GOF) somatic variants were recently identified as causing severe neutropenia, lymphoproliferation, and immune dysregulation. We report the expanded clinical and laboratory phenotype and management of 10 patients, including the original cohort of 6 male patients. We identify the first female patient with TLR8 GOF who presented during infancy with pure red cell aplasia due to a germ line TLR8 variant, and 2 new disease-causing somatic variants in male patients. Eight patients had somatic mosaicism with peripheral blood variant allele fractions of 7% to 26%, and age of disease onset of 9 months to 28 years. …

This guide promotes efficient backyard drip irrigation as a vital strategy for water conservation in Utah, the third-driest state in the U.S. It explains evapotranspiration (ET), drip system components, and provides formulas to calculate a plant’s water needs. The guide provides practical advice on converting traditional irrigation systems to drip systems, particularly in flower beds and around shrubs and trees. By implementing drip irrigation, homeowners can contribute to water conservation while enhancing the health of their landscapes.

Rising global temperatures due to climate change threaten optimal strawberry growth and sustainable yields. Limited data exist on the physiological and biochemical responses of strawberry cultivars to high-temperature stress and their tolerance mechanisms. T his study evaluated the responses of 21 day-neutral and short-day strawberry cultivars to high-temperature stress and classified their tolerance levels using a novel weighted rating method. Plants were grown in 15-cm plastic pots (3:1:1 garden soil, peat, perlite) under open-field conditions until the 3–4 leaf stage and then transferred to climate chambers. Exploring the trait structure of grassland plant communities enhances our understanding of how these communities will respond to climate change and disturbances such as herbivory. The trait structure of a plant community was investigated in the Central Anatolian steppe, an ecoregion with high biodiversity that has been largely unexplored in terms of plant functional ecology. To engage elementary learners in the complex task of STEM sensemaking, teachers must entice and inspire learners to ask questions, explore, and communicate their findings. This article shares a 5E/3D lesson designed and taught in our elementary science methods courses to model how preservice teachers can integrate literacy and mathematics into a science investigation for STEM sensemaking. We modified a traditional lesson on bird beak adaptations to have a differentiated, interdisciplinary writing component justified by data. We discuss why data-supported literacy is a non-negotiable in science education reforms and how teachers can differentiate tasks to make scientific writing more approachable …

Background

Humanized APOE targeted-replacement (TR) mice are essential tools for studying apoE isoform effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other apoE-related disorders. Despite their widespread use, existing APOE mouse models, generated with different gene targeting strategies, have not been directly compared in terms of apoE isoform expression, lipid profiles, and transcriptomic signatures. Such differences could impact how we interpret APOE genotype-related outcomes, as well as related underlying molecular mechanisms.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a low-cost, low-power biosensing technology with growing applications in education, particularly for monitoring cognitive load in eXtended Reality (XR) learning environments. Measuring cognitive load is critical for preventing overload and optimising immersive learning, yet existing approaches such as self-reports or Electroencephalography (EEG) are often intrusive, costly or impractical for real-time use. This systematic review is the first to synthesize a decade of research (2015–2025) on the use of PPG for cognitive load measurement in XR. The four standard works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contain numerous accounts in which individuals exhibit intellectual capacities — of perception, reasoning, problem-solving, and articulation — that demonstrably exceed their natural endowments and circumstances. This essay identifies twenty such accounts, organizes them into five conceptual typologies, and draws from each typology a set of concrete, actionable proposals for faculty at Brigham Young University who seek to integrate divine assistance into their scholarly and pedagogical work. BACKGROUND: The thalamus plays an important role in key clinical conditions of focal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but no investigation has examined whether the same thalamic local and connectome properties shape a patient's status across these different conditions.

METHODS: This retrospective longitudinal MRI study used resting-state fMRI and structural imaging to identify whole-brain focal/regional and connectome-level features associated with six binary clinical conditions of TLE (pre/post-surgery, seizure and neurocognitive outcomes, pathology, seizure subtype, and SOZ lateralization) in 91 patients across two centers (age range: 15-65 years) and 85 matched healthy participants (age range: 18-60 years).

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a significant increase in the number of students with autism being integrated into mainstream classrooms. This is thanks to laws and regulations enacted to provide appropriate education for students with special needs, particularly those with autism, in less restrictive environments. This is a positive step towards providing equal educational opportunities for students with special needs. However, teachers' views on integrating children with autism into mainstream education remain varied.
