Vitality, Bernadette K. Curl May 2022

Vitality, Bernadette K. Curl

Student Projects

Vitality is a study of life, joy, and motion. It is in response to the portraits of models in endless magazines made to look as though they mourn their own vitality, standing stock-still and vaguely bored. These images are also made as archival evidence that, as Phil Ochs said: “In such ugly times, the only true protest is beauty.”

These portraits were made under studio lighting on medium format, high speed, black and white negative film, and medium format, colour positive film. The materials are chosen for their ability to capture truth over fact.

I asked my subjects beforehand to …

Comparative Property Law And The Pandemic: Vulnerability Theory And Resilient Property In An Age Of Crises, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O’Mahony May 2022

Comparative Property Law And The Pandemic: Vulnerability Theory And Resilient Property In An Age Of Crises, Marc L. Roark, Lorna Fox O’Mahony

Louisiana Law Review

Political and property crises present vital new questions for property theorists, and analyses of state responses to these crises cast new light on how property systems, and property law, adapt and evolve to meet complex challenges—while remaining institutionally resilient themselves. The novel coronavirus pandemic was an extreme, exceptional, unexpected, significant “shock” event, with financial, economic, social, cultural, and political impacts on a scale not experienced since at least the 1930s. The pandemic posed an unexpected, unpredictable, and urgent threat to human life that demanded immediate action, delivered under intense public scrutiny. The challenges were “wicked”: governments were compelled to act, …

Finding Their Chrysanthemum: Linguistic Representation In Children's Literature, Marielena Zajac May 2022

Finding Their Chrysanthemum: Linguistic Representation In Children's Literature, Marielena Zajac

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Children in America today struggle with finding themselves in the books they read due to societal expectations. From an early age, children are dictated on the correct way to speak and write in “American,” which can leave children and their home languages feeling unseen and dismissed. To help further the conversation and promotion of linguistic diversity in American society, this capstone analyzes dialectal representation in children’s books, with a heavy focus on attitudinal linguistic principles rather than prescriptive mechanics. The secondary research explores current literature and resources that discuss literacy acquisition in adolescents, trends in dialects in America, and childhood …

The Applications Of The Internet Of Things In The Medical Field, Cody Repass May 2022

The Applications Of The Internet Of Things In The Medical Field, Cody Repass

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm promises to make “things” include a more generic set of entities such as smart devices, sensors, human beings, and any other IoT objects to be accessible at anytime and anywhere. IoT varies widely in its applications, and one of its most beneficial uses is in the medical field. However, the large attack surface and vulnerabilities of IoT systems needs to be secured and protected. Security is a requirement for IoT systems in the medical field where the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) applies.

This work investigates various applications of IoT in healthcare …

The Northern Illinois University Foundation And Alumni Engagement: Who Is “Golden,” And What Leads Alumni To Give To Niu After Graduation, Emma R. Mcmahon

Honors Capstones

Alumni gifts are becoming an important aspect of higher education funding due to decreasing state support. These gifts accommodate about 28 percent, or about $6.8 billion, of support to institutions of higher education (Marr et. al., 2005; Stephenson and Bell, 2014; Sung and Yang, 2009; Weerts et. al. 2010; Drezner and Pizmony-Levy, 2021; and McNamee III, 2021). There are many different aspects of the alumni and student experience that shapes the likelihood of giving behaviors and other forms of engagement including financial capacity, satisfying student experience, age, gender, race, participation in student organizations and Greek life, affirming campus climate, involvement …

Literature Review: Palliative Care In The Emergency Department, Alice Chang, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Neelesh Parikh

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

With current medical advances, our patient population continues to age. This poses new challenges for healthcare practitioners to provide for elderly patients with complex and multifactorial medical needs. Particularly, this is a growing challenge in the emergency department (ED), where patients often present towards the last months of their lives. A study conducted by UCSF indicates 75% of patients in their last 6 month of life visited the ED. 56% to 99% of older adults do not have advance directives available at ED presentation. Therefore, ED visits towards the end of life is an opportune teaching moment for physicians to …

On The Horns Of A Dilemma: Climate Adaption And Legal Profession, Mark S. Davis May 2022

On The Horns Of A Dilemma: Climate Adaption And Legal Profession, Mark S. Davis

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Few aspects of life will be spared disruptions attributed to climate change,

but those disruptions will not be evenly distributed or borne. While much

attention is being given to large-scale plans and programs aimed at effectively

and equitably coping with those disruptions, the fact is the burdens and

responsibility of planning and acting are falling mostly on individual families,

businesses, and communities. Those with access to resources and professional

assistance, specifically legal services, will stand a better chance of

adapting and prospering. Those without will likely fare worse—and already

are. In order to get better and more equitable outcomes, it …

Management Of Late-Stage Ewingoid Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Of The Spermatic Cord With Emergent Complications: A Case Report, Raeann Dalton, Abdullah Junayed, Brian Thomas, Young Son, Megan Donlick, Kathryn Goettle, Lance Earnshaw, Thomas Mueller May 2022

Management Of Late-Stage Ewingoid Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Of The Spermatic Cord With Emergent Complications: A Case Report, Raeann Dalton, Abdullah Junayed, Brian Thomas, Young Son, Megan Donlick, Kathryn Goettle, Lance Earnshaw, Thomas Mueller

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Liposarcoma (LS), a malignant tumor of adipose origin, is the most common soft tissue sarcoma (STS), and can develop within any soft tissue. It rarely occurs in the paratesticular region, and accounts for 3-7% of spermatic cord tumors. Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLS) and well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLS) account for two of the five subtypes of LS, with dedifferentiation occurring in 20% of cases. There have been 66 cases of DDLS of the spermatic cord reported to date, but none present with a 22/22q trisomy without the fusion or rearrangement that commonly produces these aggressive tumors.

Accurate diagnosis of LS of the spermatic …

Long-Term Lithium Use In The Younger Population: Do The Benefits Outweigh The Risks? - A Case Report, Seema Shekar, Alexander Garcia, Rachel Shmuts May 2022

Long-Term Lithium Use In The Younger Population: Do The Benefits Outweigh The Risks? - A Case Report, Seema Shekar, Alexander Garcia, Rachel Shmuts

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

For decades lithium has been the mainstay treatment for bipolar disorder. While its side effect profile is extensive and varied its most notable adverse effect, and one most feared by treating clinicians, is nephrotoxicity/ end-stage renal disease (ESRD). While the link between long-term lithium use and ESRD has been accepted by the medical community at large for many years, more recent scientific studies call the association into question. In fact, newer studies on the association between Li use and ESRD have shown a negative/inconclusive correlation. Despite this controversy the consensus still remains that ESRD secondary to long-term Li use is …

Lung Hernia: An Uncommon Cause Of Pleuritic Chest Pain, Brittany Fera May 2022

Lung Hernia: An Uncommon Cause Of Pleuritic Chest Pain, Brittany Fera

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Lung hernia is a rare but important consideration in the differential diagnosis of chest pain in patients with recent thoracic trauma or a history of thoracic surgery. Patients who undergo an anterior approach to thoracotomy, as was the case with our patient, are at a higher risk for developing lung herniation as a result of inherent anatomical weakness and wider intercostal spaces anteriorly and inferiorly.

Welcome To The Burn Pit: Where The Black Goo Oozes And The Green Ponds Glow, Carlissa R. Carson May 2022

Welcome To The Burn Pit: Where The Black Goo Oozes And The Green Ponds Glow, Carlissa R. Carson

Louisiana Law Review

Studies estimate that millions of servicemen and women were involuntarily exposed to toxic burn pits while deployed overseas to countries such as Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. A growing number of these servicemembers have developed severe health complications because of this exposure. Long after lacing up their last combat boot, these servicemembers are battling a bloated bureaucracy while suffering with war wounds. They are being denied healthcare and disability benefits despite this nation’s promise to care for veterans injured during their time in service. These pits, used in the absence of waste management alternatives, were often doused with jet propellant 8 and …
