500 Years Of Florida History - The Sixteenth Century: An Introduction, Connie L. Lester May 2022

500 Years Of Florida History - The Sixteenth Century: An Introduction, Connie L. Lester

Florida Historical Quarterly

The year 2013 marks the quincentennial of Juan Ponce de Leon's exploration of lands known for the past five hundred years as Florida. Historians have long noted the consequences of Ponce's activities, interpreted their origins, and offered assessments of the region's past as it related to events taking place in 1513 and the century that followed. Some have focused on European conquistadores, highlighting the exploits of colorful individuals and the institutions they represented. Others have emphasized the lives of Florida's indigenous inhabitants, especially their existence prior to colonization and reactions to foreign invaders in subsequent years. In terms of methodology, …

The Florida Keys Hurricane House: Post-Disaster New Deal Housing, Matthew G. Hyland May 2022

The Florida Keys Hurricane House: Post-Disaster New Deal Housing, Matthew G. Hyland

Florida Historical Quarterly

Hurricanes make history in Florida, and scholars often pursue Florida's violent weather to trace the state's development in relation to storms and, afterward, recovery. Since the colonial period, hurricanes have demonstrated their power to damage the region's economy by destroying property, lives, settlements, and cities. One storm in particular, the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, proved to be a furious and destructive event. Its death toll was high-its destruction merciless. It stands as a landmark in the history of the Florida Keys, but focusing on the storm's strength and tragic drama obscures other relevant consequences. It also made architectural history. This …

Florida's Carpenter Gothic Churches: Artistic Gems From A Victorian Past, Jack C. Lane May 2022

Florida's Carpenter Gothic Churches: Artistic Gems From A Victorian Past, Jack C. Lane

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1930 a relatively little known regional artist named Grant Wood entered a competition at the Art Institute of Chicago where he won first place with a painting entitled "American Gothic." News sources across the country published the story of this event along with a photograph of the winning painting, which created a sensation previously unknown in the history of American art. "American Gothic," an iconic symbol of American rural life, became one of the world's best-known images. In the painting, two rural figures with stern sober appearances stand before a small Carpenter Gothic house. The figures dominate the painting …

Florida's Constitutional Property Exemptions: Changed Intent In Unchanged Text, Eric H. Miller May 2022

Florida's Constitutional Property Exemptions: Changed Intent In Unchanged Text, Eric H. Miller

Florida Historical Quarterly

Recent events have placed the issue of bankruptcy and property exemptions in the spotlight as families negotiate he legal maze of retaining possession of their homes and property in the wake of the financial disruptions since 2007. Attorneys and clients alike are often surprised by the lack of change in the Florida constitutional provisions that limit the options for those seeking relief from the demands of creditors. Indeed, the personal property exemption seems written for an earlier time. The unchanged constitutional text shields a debtor's home but only protects personal property up to a total value of one thousand dollars, …

The Peacock Inn: South Florida's First Hotel, Susannah Worth

Florida Historical Quarterly

Nestled along the shore of Biscayne Bay five miles south of Miami is the community of Coconut Grove. Founded in the 1870s, it sits atop a limestone ridge and still has a sizeable hardwood hammock (tropical forest). The location, the shade, and the availability of fresh water were certainly a lure to early settlers. One early settler it attracted was John Thomas 'Jolly Jack" Peacock, who lived in the bight which was named after him as 'Jack's Bight."

The Politics Of Performance: Rollins College And The Annie Russell Theatre, Joan M. Jensen May 2022

The Politics Of Performance: Rollins College And The Annie Russell Theatre, Joan M. Jensen

Florida Historical Quarterly

Today, Florida boasts important venues for the performing arts. Orlando is ringed by dozens of theme parks that furnish entertainment for masses of people seeking to sample "popular" culture. These popular forms of entertainment are a backdrop for the somewhat smaller stage of "elite" or "serious" performing arts: Ringling's Asolo Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota and the Fringe Theater Festival in Miami, which attract thousands of people each year, are examples. These are two faces of the same human need for performance before an audience, and for spaces to gather the audiences.

Controlling Venereal Disease In Orlando During World War Ii, Claire Strom May 2022

Controlling Venereal Disease In Orlando During World War Ii, Claire Strom

Florida Historical Quarterly

Beryl Oates* was nineteen years old when Deputy Sheriff James Allen Black arrested her just after 10:00 am on a Saturday morning in February 1944 on suspicion of having a venereal disease. She was detained until she could be seen by Doctor and Captain Solomon Kolack who worked for the US Public Health Service as the disease control officer for Orange County, Florida. When he saw her, Kolack would have tested Beryl for syphilis and, if she tested positive, she would have probably been confined in the rapid treatment center in Ocala for a lengthy and painful course of arsenic …

A Liberated Journalist And Yankee Women On The Florida Frontier, John T. Foster, Jr May 2022

A Liberated Journalist And Yankee Women On The Florida Frontier, John T. Foster, Jr

Florida Historical Quarterly

Journalist Ellen Augusta Hill wrote an unusual newspaper column for two years in the 1880s- one that contains both her own extraordinary ideas and many of those of her rural readers. By tracing the journalist's effort and the response it helped to generate, a picture emerges of women who have received little attention in Florida history. Neither Hill nor her followers were native-born Floridians, or even Southerners. They were Yankee women who came from New York and, perhaps surprisingly, from both Ohio and Illinois. The topics covered by Hill and the dialogue engendered departed from earlier journalistic activities in Florida. …

Alachua Settlers And The Second Seminole War, C. S. Monaco May 2022

Alachua Settlers And The Second Seminole War, C. S. Monaco

Florida Historical Quarterly

The role of Florida's interior settlements and relatively modest settler population has never been assigned much historical significance vis-a-vis the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). With few exceptions, the historiography has focused on the military aspects of this protracted conflict, with certain key battles, military commanders, Native American leaders, and the destruction of the east coast sugar plantations garnering the most interest.2 The ramifications of President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act (1830) which celebrated the prospect of placing "a civilized population on large tracts of country now occupied by a few savage hunters"3 are well-known, along with the treaties of Moultrie …

Navigating The Necessary Evils: Contemplating The Topic Of Sustainability In Study Abroad, Megan Zacher May 2022

Navigating The Necessary Evils: Contemplating The Topic Of Sustainability In Study Abroad, Megan Zacher

Capstone Collection

Travel is a defining feature of education abroad, instrumental in exposing students to experiences and countries beyond their campus community. The cultural exchange implied in travel aspires to benefit both host communities and students’ home institutions. However, education abroad has negative environmental impacts incongruent with many sustainability efforts. The education abroad sector aims to address this reality by advancing the use of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in program design and execution. In this study we conducted semi-structured interviews with representatives of higher education institutions, third-party study abroad providers, and professional associations to assess how stakeholders perceive this incongruency …

The Impact Of Privacy Control On Users' Intention To Use Smart Home Internet Of Things (Iot) Services, Mingyung Kim, Bo Reum Choi

Asia Marketing Journal

Despite the diverse benefits of smart home Internet of Things (IoT) services, the biggest obstacle to the actual usage of those services is concern about privacy. However, little research has investigated the impact of privacy control on users’ intention to use smart home services. Based on communication privacy management theory and privacy calculus theory, this study investigates how privacy control options affect users’ perceived benefits and costs and how those perceptions affect individuals’ intentions to use smart home services by conducting an experiment. Our results showed that smart home privacy control options decreased perceived benefits and increased perceived costs. The …

I Can’T Believe Online. A Study On How Negative Reviews Move Online Shoppers To Offline Channel, Hyo-Jeong Kim, Sang Man Han

Asia Marketing Journal

Despite the benefits of online shopping, we easily observe consumer behaviour when making purchases through offline channels. Why do they choose to go offline by taking the effort to go there? As a factor influencing decision-making, this study assumes that distrust of online shopping increases webrooming intentions that online consumers move to offline channels. Consumers check online reviews as well as seller information to increase their purchasing confidence. There are few studies on the effect of negative online reviews on consumers' purchasing decisions. Contrary to the pessimistic results of previous studies, the results of this study explain the mechanism by …

Asia Marketing Journal

Smart city technologies such as transportation and parking systems make our daily lives more efficient and intelligent. However, it is impossible to implement a smart mobility system without analyzing the individual's behavior toward the new technology. This research study attempts to develop a framework for predicting smart mobility antecedents using SEM in primary data analysis. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was the conceptual foundation for this study. To achieve the objectives of the study, one thousand five hundred and twelve effective questionnaires were collected and analyzed using Smart PLS 3.3. The results show that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Electronic Information Resources otherwise known as Electronic Resources (ERs) is a global platform for information delivery, especially in the teaching and learning environment. This work investigates the impact ERs could have in revamping the dwindling reading culture among the students of Osun State University. The quantitative method was adopted through the use of a survey. A random sampling technique was used to select 388 respondents as the sample size from the total population of users. A predetermined structured questionnaire was deployed as the instrument of gathering data for the research study, administered to the selected respondents, returned and the data …

The Charter’S Revolutionary Impact On Gay Rights In Canada, Ameer Idreis May 2022

The Charter’S Revolutionary Impact On Gay Rights In Canada, Ameer Idreis

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

The differing paces of gay rights progress around the globe, even between otherwise culturally and politically similar states, raises important questions regarding why this disparity occurs. Previous literature on the attainment of gay rights protections in Canada have highlighted the great impact had by the addition of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to the Constitution Act, 1982. Additionally, comparative studies have argued that it is the entrenchment of the Charter which has made the crucial difference between the pace of gay rights in Canada as opposed to other states, such as Australia. This paper argues that, despite not having …

Digital Dilemmas: How The Backfire Effect And Echo Chamber Effect On Social Media Contribute To Political Polarization In The United States, Matthew O'Boyle May 2022

Digital Dilemmas: How The Backfire Effect And Echo Chamber Effect On Social Media Contribute To Political Polarization In The United States, Matthew O'Boyle

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

This paper explores how social media contributes to political polarization in the United States by addressing two of the most common effects that social media users encounter: the backfire effect and the echo chamber effect. By using the results from previous studies on these topics, the two effects are synthesized to show how they collectively contribute to increased political polarization by widening the gap of political discourse between both ends of the spectrum. Additionally, a study that attempts to prove that political polarization is not a result of increased social media use is refuted by exploring how social media microblogging …

Documenting & Describing Experiences Of Marginalized Gender Identities In Healthcare, Laura Stepnowski May 2022

Documenting & Describing Experiences Of Marginalized Gender Identities In Healthcare, Laura Stepnowski

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Despite its importance to quality and length of life, health varies widely among the U.S. population depending on various sociodemographic factors, such as age, race, gender, and income. This research focuses on the perception of treatment for those with marginalized gender identities. There is a long history of discrepancies in healthcare, but no time such as the present seems to be filled with such a nuanced perspective of quality of treatment for those with marginalized gender identities. This became evident through the focus groups conducted for this study. Findings show that participants used more collaborative language when discussing their positive …

A Machine Learning Based Approach To Detect The Ethereum Fraud Transactions With Limited Attributes, Rabia Musheer Aziz, Mohammed Farhan Baluch, Sarthak Patel, Pavan Kumar

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Ethereum smart contracts have recently received new commercial applications and a lot of attention from the scientific community. Ethereum eliminates the requirement for a trusted third party by allowing untrusted parties to expose contract details in computer code. Nonetheless, as online commerce grows, plenty of fraudulent activities, such as money laundering, bribery, and phishing, emerge as major threats to trade security. For correctly recognizing fraudulent transactions, this paper developed a Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM) technique-based model. The modified LGBM model optimized the parameters of Light GBM using the Euclidean distant structured estimation approach. This paper also examines the performance …

A Bi-Level Data Lowering Method To Minimize Transferring Big Data In The Sensors Of Iot Applications, Ali Kadhum M. Al-Qurabat, Ali Kadhum Idrees, Abdallah Makhoul, Chady Abou Jaoude

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

In the IoT era, the number of devices connected to it continues to grow significantly. This can lead to an increase in the amount of reported data by these IoT devices. The reported data by the Sensor Nodes (SNs) to the Gateway (GW) drives these IoT sensors to consume their energy and storage. These problems can be solved by reducing the amount of data in the source nodes in order to reduce both the amount of energy consumed and the amount of storage required. Energy consumption represents one aspect of the Quality of Service (QoS) in the sensor nodes of …
