Establishing A Neonatal Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (Picc) Team, Rebecca Hunt May 2022

Establishing A Neonatal Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (Picc) Team, Rebecca Hunt

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have a plethora of diagnoses, including prematurity and newborns with genetic, neurological, surgical, and cardiac problems. The nature of these disease processes usually precludes enteral feedings and providing the infant with appropriate nutrition and hydration is a priority. This requires central venous access and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement allows for a reliable route of administration for intravenous nutrition and medications. The purpose of this project was to develop a nurse-led neonatal PICC team to provide timely placement of PICC lines while maintaining cost-effectiveness and maintaining a minimal number of …

The Development Of An Evidenced-Based Guideline For The Anesthetic Management Of Surgical Cases Utilizing Evoked Potential Monitoring, Brent Hitchens, Darrell Risinger May 2022

The Development Of An Evidenced-Based Guideline For The Anesthetic Management Of Surgical Cases Utilizing Evoked Potential Monitoring, Brent Hitchens, Darrell Risinger

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Recent increases in the prevalence of neuromonitoring cases have contributed to the utilization of evoked potential (EP) monitoring during surgery. Evoked potentials are electrical signals measured in response to a stimulus. Intraoperative neuromonitoring is used to alert the surgeon, anesthesia provider, and neuromonitoring technician of changes before permanent nerve injury occurs. There are many factors that can affect neuromonitoring quality including hypothermia, hypotension, positioning, anemia, and anesthesia medications. The latter is especially important since certain anesthetic medications can have a profound inhibitory effect on the nervous system, leading to decreased amplitude and prolonged latency of EP signals. As a result, …

BACKGROUND: Current cancer immunotherapies have made tremendous impacts but generally lack high response rates, especially in ovarian cancer. New therapies are needed to provide increased benefits. One understudied approach is to target the large population of immunosuppressive tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). Using inducible transgenic mice, we recently reported that upregulating nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) signaling in TAMs promotes the M1, anti-tumor phenotype and limits ovarian cancer progression. We also developed a mannose-decorated polymeric nanoparticle system (MnNPs) to preferentially deliver siRNA payloads to M2, pro-tumor macrophages in vitro. In this study, we tested a translational strategy to repolarize ovarian TAMs via MnNPs loaded …

AIMS: Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a primary myocardial disease that typically manifests with cardiac arrhythmias, progressive heart failure, and sudden cardiac death (SCD). ACM is mainly caused by mutations in genes encoding desmosome proteins. Desmosomes are cell-cell adhesion structures and hubs for mechanosensing and mechanotransduction. The objective was to identify the dysregulated molecular and biological pathways in human ACM in the absence of overt heart failure.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Transcriptomes in the right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy samples from three independent individuals carrying truncating mutations in the DSP gene and five control samples were analysed by RNA-Seq (discovery group). These cases …

Ligers Interferometric Survey Of M Dwarf Diameters, Tyler Gregory Ellis May 2022

Ligers Interferometric Survey Of M Dwarf Diameters, Tyler Gregory Ellis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I present the largest single collection of M dwarf stellar radii in over a decade and contextualize these measurements with the systematic model discrepancies. The measurements of stellar angular diameters are also important in the quantification of the properties of exoplanets. In order to estimate the property of the exoplanet, it is first necessary to quantify the properties of the planet's host star. Using the survey results complemented with previous direct observations of the angular diameters of low mass stars, I develop updated updated surface brightness relationships. These relationships allow predictions of angular diameters using easy to …
