Subanesthetic Ketamine Infusion In Reducing Symptoms Of End-Of-Life Depression: A Case Report, Leanne Groban, Kavita Sharma May 2022

Subanesthetic Ketamine Infusion In Reducing Symptoms Of End-Of-Life Depression: A Case Report, Leanne Groban, Kavita Sharma

Aurora GME

The development of major depressive disorder in patients receiving hospice care often goes undiagnosed, as it is difficult to distinguish from preparatory grief or hypoactive delirium in this unique patient population. If this preliminary barrier of appropriate diagnosis is overcome, it can be quite difficult to properly select and adjust pharmacological therapy. Many well-established antidepressants take 4-5 weeks for maximal effectiveness, have various contraindications to patients’ co-morbid chronic conditions, particularly patients with cardiovascular disease, or may simply be ineffective. Herein, we present a case report of severe treatment-resistant depression in a hospice patient with end stage heart failure, and discuss …

Indexer++: Workload-Aware Online Index Tuning With Transformers And Reinforcement Learning, Vishal Sharma, Curtis Dyreson

Computer Science Student Research

With the increasing workload complexity in modern databases, the manual process of index selection is a challenging task. There is a growing need for a database with an ability to learn and adapt to evolving workloads. This paper proposes Indexer++, an autonomous, workload-aware, online index tuner. Unlike existing approaches, Indexer++ imposes low overhead on the DBMS, is responsive to changes in query workloads and swiftly selects indexes. Our approach uses a combination of text analytic techniques and reinforcement learning. Indexer++ consist of two phases: Phase (i) learns workload trends using a novel trend detection technique based on a pre-trained …

Spotlight On Defibrotide Sodium As A Treatment Option For Patients With Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease: Design, Development, And Place In Therapy, A Literature Review, Rajvi J. Parikh

Honors Scholar Theses

Hepatic Veno-Occlusive disease (Hepatic VOD) is a rare complication that can develop in patients following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and high-dose chemotherapy. It is characterized by hepatomegaly, right upper quadrant pain, ascites, and jaundice [1,9]. The pathophysiology of hepatic VOD is not well understood but is generally understood as a cascade of events that begin with endothelial cell damage which leads to fibrosis and coagulation within hepatic vasculature. This rare condition can be treated with a drug called defibrotide sodium (sold under the name “Defitelio”). Defibrotide sodium is an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) drug that promotes fibrinolysis (the breakdown of fibrin …

Gazing Upon The Moon, Fang-Yu Sarah Chang May 2022

Gazing Upon The Moon, Fang-Yu Sarah Chang

Theses

Relationships are universal, they exist across cultures, geographic boundaries, and other barriers. This idea intrigues me as I have lived and currently study abroad. The emotion, the sense of unease; I was surrounded by these feelings. Everything changed when I took the first step and looked into others' stories, and realized I was not alone. Overall, my inspiration for my thesis stems from a poem regarding the moon and the idea of “‘we are always together”.

PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies Publications

If worldwide healthcare was a country, it would be the fifth largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet. The increase in global temperatures, combined with the negative impacts of urbanization, has made it more important than ever to introduce green spaces where possible. With climate change worsening, human health, both physically and mentally is on decline, making the effects of climate change especially pressing to the stability of healthcare systems. In order to mitigate the lasting impacts of climate change on healthcare facilities, a holistic solution is needed. Access to green space in hospitals has been shown to reduce …

Factors Associated With Advance Care Planning Engagement In Healthy Young Adults, Pablo J. Vasquez May 2022

Factors Associated With Advance Care Planning Engagement In Healthy Young Adults, Pablo J. Vasquez

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Background: Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that supports individuals at any stage of health in understanding and sharing their personal values and goals pertaining current or future medical needs with their families and healthcare providers. Although ACP is applicable to adults of any age and any stage of the health continuum, it is widely associated with older or terminally ill populations, and the need for end-of-life (EOL) planning in healthy young adults is generally found unnecessary. The National Institutes of Health supports the expansion of ACP research in understudied populations. Investigating ACP in healthy young adults support such …

Feed-In Tariffs And Sustainable Energy: Why Different Oecd Governments Support Sustainable Energy At Different Rates Through Feed-In Tariffs, Joshua M. Grahame

Business and Economics Honors Papers

Why is it that different governments in the OECD support sustainable energy at different rates? In the effort to explain this difference, Feed-in-Tariffs (FITs) will be closely examined to see if it can explain the significant portion of the variation among countries. This project serves as a continuation of previous scholars' works, to better understand the variation between countries in adopting renewable energy, even though all members of the OECD have pledged that by 2030 half of their energy will come from sustainable energy. Whereas previous research considered data ending in 2012 and looked at countries outside of the OECD, …

Climatic Influences On Summer Use Of Winter Precipitation By Trees, Gregory R. Goldsmith, Scott T. Allen, Sabine Braun, Rolf T. W. Siegwolf, James W. Kirchner

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Trees in seasonal climates may use water originating from both winter and summer precipitation. However, the seasonal origins of water used by trees have not been systematically studied. We used stable isotopes of water to compare the seasonal origins of water found in three common tree species across 24 Swiss forest sites sampled in two different years. Water from winter precipitation was observed in trees at most sites, even at the peak of summer, although the relative representation of seasonal sources differed by species. However, the representation of winter precipitation in trees decreased with site mean annual precipitation in both …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Consumer demands to utilize environmentally friendly packaging have led researchers to develop packaging materials from naturally derived resources. In recent years, plant protein-based films as a replacement for synthetic plastics have attracted the attention of the global food packaging industry due to their biodegradability and unique properties. Biopolymer-based films need a filler to show improved packaging properties. One of the latest strategies introduced to food packaging technology is the production of nanocomposite films which are multiphase materials containing a filler with at least one dimension less than 100 nm. This review provides the recent findings on plant-based protein films as …
