Is Blood Flow Restriction Training Superior For The Limitation Of Hamstring And Quadriceps Atrophy After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction? A Review Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Joshua M. Spada, Ryan W. Paul, Bradford S. Tucker

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Post operative recovery from Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) includes extensive rehabilitation of 6-9 months with return to sport/activity at 12 months

Rehabilitation is initiated shortly following surgery to limit quadriceps and hamstring atrophy, maximizing long term tibiofemoral joint stability and functional outcomes

The best way to achieve improved muscle strength and prevent atrophy is progressive overload training, however, these activities cannot be performed post operatively without risk to the reconstructed knee

Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR) involves impairing the blood supply for short periods through the application of an air-filled bladder or cuff to restrict the venous drainage of …

Lead Poisoning, Education, And Advocacy For Prevention (L.E.A.P.) Study, Stephen Acheampong, Britney Aderinto, Zander Turcich, Ali Harb

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Lead poisoning has been regarded as a major threat due to its irreversible and harmful effects. This includes severe cognitive and developmental impairments, especially in children.

Over the years, the CDC has reduced the benchmark for acceptable blood lead levels (BLL) from 10 μg/ml to 3.5 μg/ml to allow for earlier intervention and prevention.

Despite increased awareness and government programs that lead to a decline in mean blood levels across the country, testing for elevated BLLs, especially in low-income households, continues to be disproportionately lower.

Latarjet Surgery Leads To Decreased Rates Of Subjective Instability Compared To Bankart Repair With Concomitant Remplissage, Joshua Spada, Ryan W. Paul, Manoj Reddy, Gabriel Onor, John Hayden Sonnier, Ari Clements, Meghan E. Bishop, Brandon J. Erickson May 2022

Latarjet Surgery Leads To Decreased Rates Of Subjective Instability Compared To Bankart Repair With Concomitant Remplissage, Joshua Spada, Ryan W. Paul, Manoj Reddy, Gabriel Onor, John Hayden Sonnier, Ari Clements, Meghan E. Bishop, Brandon J. Erickson

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background: Predictive factors for performing remplissage concomitantly with arthroscopic Bankart repair include the presence of humeral or glenoid defects >11% and/or revision surgery. International and societal consensus statements support these findings, as surgeons recommend the Latarjet procedure for patients with significant glenoid bone loss (>15-20%) while remplissage is recommended for patients with off-track or engaging Hill-Sachs lesions without significant glenoid bone loss. While several studies have compared outcomes between Latarjet surgery and remplissage, these studies have only evaluated patients with engaging Hill-Sachs lesions, not consecutive patient cohorts indicated for each surgery.

Purpose: To compare rates of recurrent instability, re-operation, …

Friends Of The Earth V. Haaland Case Summary, Valan Anthos

Public Land & Resources Law Review

A federal district court vacated the U.S.’s largest offshore oil and gas lease sale ever because of an inadequate NEPA analysis. The court found that the BOEM’s decision to exclude estimations of reductions in foreign oil consumption if no lease took place was arbitrary and capricious.

A Puzzling Case Of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus In The Outpatient Setting, Shadi Shams, Asim Shafique, Marym Khan, James Bailey May 2022

A Puzzling Case Of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus In The Outpatient Setting, Shadi Shams, Asim Shafique, Marym Khan, James Bailey

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a disease of adulthood characterized by the triad of gait disturbance, dementia, and urinary incontinence. Since NPH shares a lot of characteristics with other disorders including neurodegenerative disorders and degenerative-dystrophic spine, it is usually underdiagnosed and undertreated. Combination of ventriculomegaly seen on a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with clinical findings could be used in diagnosis of NPH. However, improvement of symptoms post spinal tap procedure would be a better indication of diagnosis. Currently, shunt placement is the best available modality of treatment for NPH. Here we present a case of …

Case Report: A Patient With Gait Dysfunction With Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Masquerading As Diabetic Polyneuropathy, David Parkes, Russell Mordecai May 2022

Case Report: A Patient With Gait Dysfunction With Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Masquerading As Diabetic Polyneuropathy, David Parkes, Russell Mordecai

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

New onset gait dysfunction often prompts admission to the hospital for further evaluation. The typical patient is an elderly person who normally is self-sufficient but had recently experienced a decline in their ability to care for themselves. Sometimes, however, those who present with gait dysfunction do not fit the expected demographic. These individuals raise concern for less common “zebra” presentations of neurological dysfunction. We describe one such rare case of a 39-year-old female with a new onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus and recent COVID-19 infection that presented to the emergency department with a sensation of bilateral lower extremity burning …

Impact Of Behavioral Health Consultant Intervention On Health Outcomes In An Integrated Primary Care Setting, Arpita Suri, Attiyah Zaheer, Christine Leroy, Robert Steer, Bhavin Shah, Sahil Zaveri, Shideh Doroudi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Integrated Primary Care Models are fast gaining popularity, and often being advocated as an important step in enhancing patient care within a primary care setting. Several studies have shown a positive impact of Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) intervention in terms of patient satisfaction, improvement in patient symptom scores and global mental functioning. However, additional studies are needed to assess if integrated behavioral health consultations can demonstrate measurable outcome improvements to quantify the benefits of this approach, related to some of the most commonly seen and treated medical diseases in a primary care setting. This study aims to measure three outcomes: …

Cdk8 Kinase Module Modifies Expression Of Specific Translation-Related Proteins Before And After Stress, Brittany Friedson, Katrina Cooper May 2022

Cdk8 Kinase Module Modifies Expression Of Specific Translation-Related Proteins Before And After Stress, Brittany Friedson, Katrina Cooper

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Translation is tightly coupled to growth status. Efficient protein synthesis is necessary for cell growth in nutrient rich environments, while global translation inhibition combined with selective translation of stress-responsive mRNAs helps limit growth in times of stress. Environmental stress cues which inhibit the nutrient-sensing complex TORC1 are known to reduce general translation, but how does the cell alter protein synthesis machinery to adapt to these conditions? A few mechanisms to promote cell survival in nitrogen starvation include post-translational modification and selective degradation of specific mRNA-binding translation factors, as well as inhibition of activators of genes whose products are required for …

Impact Forces And Patterns Of Axonal Injury Differ Between Two Models Of Tbi, Edward Lai, David M Devilbiss May 2022

Impact Forces And Patterns Of Axonal Injury Differ Between Two Models Of Tbi, Edward Lai, David M Devilbiss

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects approximately 3.8 million Americans a year and results in complex neuropathological and neurocognitive sequelae. Animal models of TBI attempt to replicate the impact forces and pathology of injury in humans. However, in these models, the forces generated at the time of impact are poorly understood. Nonetheless, a variety of shear and strain forces generated at the time of impact can produce diffuse axonal injury. Injury to axons and neurons across a variety of brain regions resulting from axonal injury underlies the cognitive and behavioral impairments observed after TBI. Three critical brain regions, the corpus callosum …

The Effect Of Age Concentration And Glucose Levels In Rage-Mediated Cardiac Fibroblast Migration In Type 2 Diabetes, Lorral Kanauss May 2022

The Effect Of Age Concentration And Glucose Levels In Rage-Mediated Cardiac Fibroblast Migration In Type 2 Diabetes, Lorral Kanauss

Honors Theses

Diabetes is one of the largest health concerns in the United States. Its continuous increase in prevalence has led to it being one of the largest healthcare costs and consistently listed as one of the leading causes of death. That being said, diabetes also increases the risk of other health conditions, one of which is cardiovascular disease. Left ventricle hypertrophy resulting in the stiffening of the left ventricle and diastolic dysfunction is one form of cardiovascular disease associated with diabetes. Thought to be impacted by decreased fibroblast migration in the extracellular matrix, the experiments performed in this study seek to …

Openness as a concept in scholarly communication is gaining increased traction with more and more universities and research institutes adopting the concept. But is it just a concept or even worst an aspiration? Open is difficult both politically and in practical terms and how many institutions actually move into the action and implementation phase? TU Dublin has achieved considerable success with open access to publications using the institutional repository Arrow@TUDublin. However, now we want to move into the implementation phase and become an open research university. Simultaneously we are involved with a project for the European University of Technology to …

Bright Stars Or Unreliable Compasses: Navigating Patent Definiteness During The Fourth Industrial Revolution, N. Thane Bauz May 2022

Bright Stars Or Unreliable Compasses: Navigating Patent Definiteness During The Fourth Industrial Revolution, N. Thane Bauz

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

This Article traces the evolution of the definiteness requirement over the course of two centuries. From the time of inventions relating to flour mills, the definiteness requirement evolved into the consequence for drafting uninterpretable claims. Without considering the reasons for this evolution, the Supreme Court in its Nautilus decision returned the standard for assessing definiteness to its root form. Given the consequences are the loss of patent rights, this Article grapples with the Supreme Court’s decision during an era where complex and convergent technologies are more commonplace. The Article also analyzes empirical evidence six years before and six years after …

How An Environmental Crisis Catalyzed Community-Led Planning To Address Racial Inequities: A Case Study Of Shingle Mountain, In Southern Dallas, Evelyn Mayo

Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive

Equity is one of the “Four E’s” representing the core values for planning at the City of Dallas, Texas (City of Dallas, Core Values). However, many neighborhoods in Southern Dallas endure environmental injustices partly because land use planning ignores or disregards the needs of low-income communities of color. This report examines the Shingle Mountain environmental justice crisis in Southern Dallas to illuminate the environmental injustices that the community of Floral Farms has endured partly due to misguided planning and the neglect of the city of Dallas. The study focuses on examining how the grassroots, community-led land use plan developed by residents …

Safety And Efficacy Of Silver-Coated Biomaterials In Vivo, Megan Klem, Darien L. Seidman, Rahyan Mahmoud, Manuella Adu, Lei Yu, Jeffrey Hettinger, Renee M Demarest

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Overtreatment and overuse of antibiotics in healthcare and agricultural settings have contributed to the selective pressure on bacterial strains to develop resistance. Resistance can develop as a result of mutations and subsequent resistance genes that allow bacteria to survive against antibiotics. Novel silver-oxide coatings were developed and were previously demonstrated to prevent adhesion of gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa) to the disc, but did not prevent gram-positive bacterial adherence (Streptococcus Aureus). In order to determine whether the silver-oxide coatings are bacterial static and may be preventing progression to biofilm formation, in vivo analysis of S. Aureus attached to …

Stroke In Hfref Without Atrial Fibrillation And Concurrent Protein S Deficiency: What Is The Best Treatment?, Rohan Umrani, Trinava Roy, Bhavana Kadiyala, Yvette Wang May 2022

Stroke In Hfref Without Atrial Fibrillation And Concurrent Protein S Deficiency: What Is The Best Treatment?, Rohan Umrani, Trinava Roy, Bhavana Kadiyala, Yvette Wang

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Hypercoagulable disorders are often the culprit for repeated strokes in young patients, with or without other comorbidities

Medications typically used for stroke prophylaxis:

  • Warfarin
  • Aspirin
  • Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs)

Warfarin is the preferred method of anticoagulation for stroke prophylaxis in patients with hypercoagulable disorders

A deficiency of protein S increases the risk of pro coagulation due to a relative deficiency of anticoagulants.

Patients with protein S deficiency tend to have recurrent venous thromboses and pulmonary emboli

The Role Of Corticothalamic Projections (Prelimbic Cortex To Nucleus Reuniens) In Working Memory, Phillip Kumpf, Paul C. Kumpf, S. D. Dunn, Evan Ciacciarelli, T. Gohar, Timothy Sloand, Mark Niedringhaus, Elizabeth West May 2022

The Role Of Corticothalamic Projections (Prelimbic Cortex To Nucleus Reuniens) In Working Memory, Phillip Kumpf, Paul C. Kumpf, S. D. Dunn, Evan Ciacciarelli, T. Gohar, Timothy Sloand, Mark Niedringhaus, Elizabeth West

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Working memory (WM) is the ability to store information for short periods of time and is used to execute tasks

WM has been understood to work via the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and dorsal hippocampus (dHPC), but they do not directly project to each other

The nucleus reuniens of the thalamus (Re) is a “middle man” between the mPFC and dHPC

There are projections between the prelimbic cortex (PrL) and Re that may be used during WM

To test the connection of the PrL to Re, a delayed nonmatch to position (DNMTP) task was performed

Neuronal Activity Within The Ventral Tegmental Area Is Correlated With Cocaine-Seeking Behavior In Male, But Not Female, Rats, Colton D. Spencer, Nicole M. Hinds, Ireneusz D. Wojtas, Desta M. Pulley, Daniel Manvich May 2022

Neuronal Activity Within The Ventral Tegmental Area Is Correlated With Cocaine-Seeking Behavior In Male, But Not Female, Rats, Colton D. Spencer, Nicole M. Hinds, Ireneusz D. Wojtas, Desta M. Pulley, Daniel Manvich

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The objective of this study was to begin to determine the neurobiological underpinnings of psychosocial stress-induced cocaine seeking. Social defeat stress, achieved using the well-established resident-intruder procedure, is an ecologically-valid psychosocial stressor in rodents that may more closely recapitulate those psychosocial experiences that elicit cocaine craving and relapse in human cocaine users. Our laboratory has developed a model of psychosocial stress-induced relapse in rats in which extinguished cocaine seeking is reinstated by re-exposure to a discrete cue that signals impending social defeat stress. We previously reported that an individual rat’s predilection towards the display of active coping behaviors during prior …

Case Report: How A Vallecular Cyst Could Have Become An Airway Emergency, Adam Kandil, Robin Lahr, Andrew Caravello

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Vallecular cysts, also known as epiglottic mucous retention cysts are known to be generally self-limiting laryngeal lesion. They can however also be associated with airway obstruction, and dysphagia in infants. In adults, they are usually asymptomatic, and usually incidentally diagnosed. At times they are diagnosed during rapid sequence intubation, as they may contribute to endotracheal intubation difficulty. Moreover, there is question as to the correlation between vallecular cysts and the incidence of acute epiglottitis, as a vallecular cyst may become infected and cause a localized expansion of inflammation and infection. This expansion from the vallecula progresses to epiglottis.

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

This Article discusses the Top 10 BioTechnology Patent Cases of 2020. Suffice it to say that biotechnology patent law will continue to vigorously evolve, and we plan to continue our coverage of its evolution beyond the current trilogy of Biotechnology Patent Law Top Tens. As in previous years, we admit it was difficult to choose precisely ten top biotechnology patent law decisions. There are certainly others we did not include that warrant close attention for their reasonings, rules, and future implications. Nevertheless, both we and our readers can count, so we have done our best to select what we consider …
