Parenting Isn't Easy: Parent Newsletters For Social/Emotional Learning In Early Childhood, Lauryn Meyer
Parenting Isn't Easy: Parent Newsletters For Social/Emotional Learning In Early Childhood, Lauryn Meyer
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
Most educators know that it is very important to a child’s overall success to be supported socially and emotionally, especially in Early Childhood. We understand that children do not just act out the way they do because they feel like misbehaving. The challenging behavior is usually the cause of some other sort of reaction the child might not know how to explain or verbalize, for example: feeling tired, hungry, or uncomfortable in a certain situation.
In Early Childhood, educators work closely with parents and caregivers in order to continue the same level of learning at home as well. As …
Self-Advocacy Perceptions Of Special Education Students In The General Education Setting, Ann Anderson
Self-Advocacy Perceptions Of Special Education Students In The General Education Setting, Ann Anderson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Self-advocacy is an important skill that all students should learn. It plays a vital role in many aspects of life at home, in school, in the community, and at work. This is especially important for special education students who have more challenges than their peers. It begins by improving communication with teachers, giving students the confidence to voice their needs, and acquiring appropriate modifications and accommodations that allow them to show their true abilities and reach their full academic potential. Students that are able to self-advocate are more likely to be more successful in school as well as later on …

Which Factors Influence African American Male Students' Persistence In And Graduation From College?, Jeremiah Rotich
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
ABSTRACT
Black male students (also known as African American male students) graduate from college at a lower rate than their Latino, White, and Asian counterparts for various reasons, including a lack of engagement, a lack of personal goals, institutional factors, and dispositions. Other reasons that impede students from achieving their academic goals include limited academic and personal support, a lack of flexible policies, and a lack of diversity engagement. These challenges are faced by both the 2-year colleges and the 4-year institutions. This study employed a narrative inquiry approach in exploring factors that influence African American male students’ persistence in …

Preparing Paraprofessionals To Be Effective In Physical Education, Chelsey Lieffring
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Students with autism often struggle in their physical education class due to the complex needs that arise in a gymnasium. When the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped Children) program is implemented, students are engaged with their peers and are able to be successful in a challenging environment through visual schedules, physical structure, and task organization. It’s important that paraprofessionals and physical education teachers are aware of this programming in order to decrease challenging behaviors and increase student success in the physical education setting.
Paraprofessionals are such a vital part of the special education team. They are …

Language barriers have shown a need for differentiation and sheltered instruction in the classroom for English Learners (ELs) to be successful in the United States public school system. This project proposes a mathematics curriculum using SIOP so that both groups of students in the middle school level can increase their proficiency in the mathematics content area as well as experience opportunities for academic and social language development. The purpose of this report is to describe the processes, methods, data, and intent of the mathematics curriculum for these learners. The curriculum acts as an effective intervention to fill gaps in both …
The Role Of L1 Literacy In L2 Reading Development, Sunshine Clark
The Role Of L1 Literacy In L2 Reading Development, Sunshine Clark
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
The purpose of this project was to discover what the research says about the role a student’s first language (L1) plays in their second language (L2) literacy development. As immigrant populations increase across the United States, some districts are perpetuating or implementing programs with little knowledge of best practices. Many districts fail to realize the value of a student’s L1 in their ability to acquire another language and be successful in an academic situation. This situation is perpetuated by district policy, teachers, and families themselves, and the results hinder the educational system’s actual goal of helping students from immigrant …
The Development Of Critical Thinking Skills In Beginner Adult Esl Classrooms, Kwangmi Kim
The Development Of Critical Thinking Skills In Beginner Adult Esl Classrooms, Kwangmi Kim
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
In the U.S. education system, critical thinking skills have become essential for students in the 21st century, but they are still not fully discussed in the ESL field. This is especially true for adult learners at the beginner level. Beginner-level students lack the language to participate in critical thinking skills and that it hinders their development is a general assumption. However, critical thinking skills cannot be developed quickly in a short amount of time and students need to have opportunities to practice them often while developing language. This means that teachers of adult beginner ESL students must choose class activities …

The Nature Of Environmental Planning In The Carnué Land Grant, Desiree Loggins
The Nature Of Environmental Planning In The Carnué Land Grant, Desiree Loggins
Geography ETDs
In 1819, the Spanish Crown established Cañón de Carnué land grant as a buffer between the colonial settlement of Albuquerque and raids from Plains Apache and other nomadic tribal nations. Upon entering the U.S. period of Manifest Destiny, Carnué land grant heirs lost much of the land they stewarded as a collective to the Cibola National Forest. While the state generates laws and policies that complicate the prioritization of subsistence land uses by land grant communities, Carnué’s presence is felt as grantees reform relationships to their environment and assert their personal stake in stewardship and care. I argue that Carnué’s …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Heat stress is a primary constraint to Australia's barley production. In addition to impacting grain yield, it adversely affects physical grain quality (weight and plumpness) and market value. The incidence of heat stress during grain filling is rising with global warming. However, breeding for new superior heat-tolerant genotypes has been challenging due to the narrow window of sensitivity, the unpredictable nature of heat stress, and its frequent co-occurrence with drought stress. Greater scientific knowledge regarding traits and mechanisms associated with heat tolerance would help develop more efficient selection methods. Our objective was to assess 157 barley varieties of contrasting genetic …

Conventional Nutrition facts data relays the amounts of different minerals in apples. This information from such analysis may not connect these minerals with their natural biochemical or functional state for health or disease. These minerals may also be part of different particle sizes that affects X-ray transmission, absorption and scatter. The minerals may also redistribute within the tissue over time with or without heat shock. Current Medical Imaging procedures (Xray and MRI) do not localize such minerals. Our work offers a way to increase detection sensitivity of transition metals in various apple varieties non-invasively. This can constitute a step in …
A Drift-Flux Model For Upward Two-Phase In Pipes With High Velocity Flows, Woochan Lee
A Drift-Flux Model For Upward Two-Phase In Pipes With High Velocity Flows, Woochan Lee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study proposes the evaluation and development of a drift-flux model for upward two-phase high-velocity flow in large diameter pipes. A case where the proposed model is applicable is WCD (Worst-Case-Discharge) calculations for offshore wells. WCD assumes relatively larger pipe diameters and higher flow rates than the flow experiments at laboratory conditions utilized to validate and develop most of the flow models available in the literature.
Most of the two-phase flow models describe flow regime transitions as discrete processes by assigning the required void fraction or velocity for each flow regime transition. Therefore, for each flow regime, flow-regime-dependent correlations or …

Small Cell Carcinoma Of The Anal Canal: A Rare Entity, Shailesh Niroula, Ujjwal Jung Karki, Bipin Ghimire, Shrinjaya Thapa
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Neoplasm of anal canal are <5% of the malignancy of gastrointestinal tract. Majority of the cancers are squamous cell and adenocarcinoma. Primary small cell carcinoma of the anal canal is a very rare diagnosis with only handful of cases reported in literature. 66-year-old female with multiple co-morbidities presented with rectal pain. She had initially noticed hemorrhoids six months prior to presentation. CT abdomen and pelvis showed bilateral inguinal lymphadenopathy and diverticulosis. Patient then had colonoscopy which showed mass in the anal canal, initial biopsy showed squamous cell carcinoma with basaloid features. Lymph node biopsy was also positive for metastatic cancer likely anal in origin. PET scan showed metastatic lesion in the lumbar vertebra. Review of slides was done before starting chemotherapy as component of small cell carcinoma was also seen. Due to diagnostic dilemma, patient was initially started on Carboplatin and Paclitaxel first cycle as it is effective against both squamous and small cell carcinoma. Repeat evaluation of the slides confirmed small cell cancer as the diagnosis and chemotherapy was changed to carboplatin and etoposide. Patient received 3 cycles of the carboplatin and etoposide after which atezolizumab was added. She received total of 6 cycles of the chemotherapy. Repeat PET scan showed partial favorable response. Due to rarity of the disease, there was significant delay in diagnosis of the cancer. Diagnosis of small cell carcinoma in the anal canal relies on neuroendocrine differentiation. There is no formal evidence-based recommendation regarding treatment. They are considered equivalent to pulmonary small cell carcinoma and treated in similar manner.

Identifying the progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) to accelerated CLL (aCLL) or transformation to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (Richter transformation; RT) has significant clinical implications as it prompts a major change in patient management. However, the differentiation between these disease phases may be challenging in routine practice. Unsupervised learning has gained increased attention because of its substantial potential in data intrinsic pattern discovery. Here, we demonstrate that cellular feature engineering, identifying cellular phenotypes via unsupervised clustering, provides the most robust analytic performance in analyzing digitized pathology slides (accuracy = 0.925, AUC = 0.978) when compared to alternative approaches, such …

Pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) is a precursor of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), which commonly occurs in the general populations with aging. Although most PanIN lesions (PanINs) harbor oncogenic KRAS mutations that initiate pancreatic tumorigenesis; PanINs rarely progress to PDAC. Critical factors that promote this progression, especially targetable ones, remain poorly defined. We show that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-delta (PPARδ), a lipid nuclear receptor, is upregulated in PanINs in humans and mice. Furthermore, PPARδ ligand activation by a high-fat diet or GW501516 (a highly selective, synthetic PPARδ ligand) in mutant KRASG12D (KRASmu) pancreatic epithelial cells strongly accelerates PanIN progression to PDAC. This …

Intro
Three-dimensional (3D) models have recently been used in pre-operative planning in rare, complex surgeries in many disciplines. The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy of using 3D models in common procedures that involve increased risk of injury to hepatic arteries in the biliary region. This would allow surgeons to plan around individual variation and prevent intra-operative complications in these regions. This study focuses on the feasibility of converting computed tomography (CT) scans into 3D models to identify anatomical variation and compares the results to the published rates of anatomical variation for the structures considered.

An Evidence-Based Lexical Pattern Approach For Quality Assurance Of Gene Ontology Relations, Licong Cui
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Gene Ontology (GO) is widely used in the biological domain. It is the most comprehensive ontology providing formal representation of gene functions (GO concepts) and relations between them. However, unintentional quality defects (e.g. missing or erroneous relations) in GO may exist due to the large size of GO concepts and complexity of GO structures. Such quality defects would impact the results of GO-based analyses and applications. In this work, we introduce a novel evidence-based lexical pattern approach for quality assurance of GO relations. We leverage two layers of evidence to suggest potentially missing relations in GO as follows. We first …

Lupin seeds have an excellent nutritional profile, including a high proportion of protein and dietary fiber. These qualities make lupin seeds an ideal candidate to help meet the growing global demand for complementary sources of protein. Of consequence to this application, there are nutritional and antinutritional properties assigned to the major lupin seed storage proteins—referred to as α-, β-, δ- and γ-conglutins The variation in the abundance of these protein families can impact the nutritional and bioactive properties of different lupin varieties. Hence, exploring the conglutin protein profiles across a diverse range of lupin varieties will yield knowledge that can …

Imsa Teachers' Thoughts On The State Of Humanities And Social Sciences, Russell Deng '22
Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy
If the warnings of educators, researchers, and disgruntled postgrad students across the country are to be believed, the humanities and related social sciences are in crisis.
