Sir, I read with interest the letter regarding over-consenting for mandibular third molar (M3M) extractions. A similar audit was carried out in our oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) department here in the South West, collecting data from 50 consent forms for removal of M3Ms. It showed that 76% of our consent forms had included the risk of nerve damage, 88% included the risk of numbness or altered sensation whereas 30% included altered taste as a risk as well.I wish to highlight a very useful document by the British Association of Oral Surgeons which is currently being used at our OMFS …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
The work I create is experimental, and stylized. I like to use certain art making processes such as photography or ceramics to work through different events or emotions that are currently going on in my day to day activities. The concept of taking something common and turning it into tangible art is a topic I am passionate about and continuously exploring.
Images help document the ordinary moments that go on in life that oftentimes humans forget, unless they are photographed or revisited at another time. Throughout my work I am constantly finding myself dealing with the surface area of an object …

Emotional Injury: The Hidden Cost Of Workplace Violence, Susan Cusack, Meagan Cleary
Nursing
Background Review
Workplace violence (WPV) is a common, increasing experience in healthcare. Verbal violence is the most common type and is typically considered “not that big of a deal” or “minor” (Hahn et al. 2008, Magnavita 2014). However, verbal violence and harassment are extremely destructive to team member morale and productivity, leading to burnout and aggression in the victim (Brophy et al. 2017, Miller 2008, Phillips 2016).
Purpose
The workplace violence committee (WPVC) at a 750+ bed, Level 1 trauma center on the south side of Chicago aimed to quantify the number of verbal incidents and their consequences to inform …

Flipping The Classroom: Flipped Learning And The Performance Of High School Algebra 2 Students, Brett Bergeson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This study researched the effects a flipped classroom had on student performance, attitude, and engagement. In a traditional classroom, direct instruction can take up half of the class time, or even more. A flipped classroom moves the direct instruction to outside of class, leaving class time for learning activities. With this extra time during class for students to engage with classmates or the teacher, it is expected that performance will start to increase. To measure performance, a unit test was given at the conclusion of the unit. Scores were compared between the experimental group and the control group. The experimental …

News Media Literacy And Political Engagement In High School Civics Education, Elise Sperling
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The task of teaching civics to secondary students has been complicated by a constantly changing media environment and declining political involvement by young people. Youth are not equipped to interpret the vast amounts of information they consume on their phones and computers (Breakstone et al., 2018). At the same time, civics education has not prepared students to be engaged citizens in democracy (Vercellotti & Matto, 2016). Considering these factors, this study attempted to analyze whether teaching a news media literacy unit increased the political engagement levels of high school students, as some other studies have shown. Thirty high school students …

The flaw within this expectation is that rarely do high school students experience what their futures may look like depending on their career path. The focus of this curriculum is to provide knowledge and experiences that can help students reach society’s expectation. The population of focus is middle to high school students, preferably juniors and seniors. Research was collected and a literature review was prepared to support the demand of the curriculum in education and …

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
Trauma-informed classrooms refer to implementation of trauma-informed strategies in classrooms such that the learning environment is cognizant of the effects of trauma on the social and educational life of a child (McInerney & McKlindon, 2014). In trauma-informed classrooms, teachers do not assume the presence of trauma among the pupils; rather, the teachers utilize additional classroom resources so as to provide a welcoming and stable environment for all students.
About one half to two-thirds of children experience trauma (McInerney & McKlindon, 2014). Yet, neglecting this problem has detrimental effects on the ability of children to cope and learn in school. …
