Save The Children® Community Health Worker Program - Prenatal Care, Deirdre A. Martinez May 2022

Save The Children® Community Health Worker Program - Prenatal Care, Deirdre A. Martinez

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The United States continues to have an unacceptably high rate of preventable deaths among pregnant and new mothers—the highest rate among developed countries. Pregnancy outcomes are especially poor in minority, rural, and medically-underserved populations, with lack of access to healthcare being identified as a primary factor in poor pregnancy outcomes and pregnancy-related deaths. It is imperative that action be taken to reverse this disturbing trend. Introduction of the Community Health Worker (CHW) into the multidisciplinary healthcare team is a solution that results in increased access to healthcare, along with many other positive health outcomes, and is one way in which …

Integrating Culturally Tailored Interventions To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening: A Quality Improvement Initiative In A Primary Care Clinic, Marife Centeno Solomon May 2022

Integrating Culturally Tailored Interventions To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening: A Quality Improvement Initiative In A Primary Care Clinic, Marife Centeno Solomon

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Background: While the incidence of cervical cancer in the US has significantly decreased due to the utilization of vaccination and screening tests, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander women consistently have the lowest rate of cervical cancer screening, making them at risk for undetected cervical cancer disease.

Problem: The low cervical cancer screening uptake can be attributed to a knowledge deficit about cervical cancer and its screening and the importance of early detection. Being an immigrant and with limited English proficiency can hinder women of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander from getting screened for cervical …

Can Hope Be Primed In Chronic Pain? A Clinical Application Of Health Priming, Brenda Stockdale May 2022

Can Hope Be Primed In Chronic Pain? A Clinical Application Of Health Priming, Brenda Stockdale

Educational Studies Dissertations

ABSTRACT

It is recognized that nonintentional, automatic processing shapes physical health and well-being in critical ways. Conditioning––or priming––has been shown to influence attitude, beliefs, agency, behavior, and medical outcomes. Although expectations and beliefs correlate strongly with physical health, research in clinical application is needed, and studies on hope, as related to agency, in chronic pain are rare. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether, in a chronic pain sample (N = 154), hope could be primed via a Pain Neuroscience Educational (PNE) tutorial. A pre- and post-test intervention study consisting of two randomized parallel groups was designed …

Department of Surgery Faculty Research

Hepatic mesenchymal hamartomas (HMH) are benign liver lesions that present as cystic, slow growing masses within the first few years of life. Few cases demonstrate placental abnormalities and abnormal levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). We report an unusual case of a rapidly growing HMH with associated placental anomalies and elevated AFP. A 2-month-old female born prematurely due to concerning placental findings presented with a prenatally-identified liver mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a marked increase in the size of the mass over a three- month period. Prior to surgery, the AFP was elevated and decreased after operative resection. Histopathology confirmed the …

The electroweak interaction in the standard model is described by a pure vector-axial-vector structure, though any Lorentz-invariant component could contribute. In this Letter, we present the most precise measurement of tensor currents in the low-energy regime by examining the β-ν¯ correlation of trapped Li8 ions with the Beta-decay Paul Trap. We find aβν=-0.3325±0.0013stat±0.0019syst at 1σ for the case of coupling to right-handed neutrinos (CT=-CT′), which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Improving Diabetes Self-Management (Dsm) Among Patients With Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm): A Patient-Centered Education Model, Maria Hannah Tiangha Mandecote

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus or T2DM is an epidemic of enormous proportions affecting many individuals globally. Considering the significant burden and adverse outcomes when uncontrolled diabetes and poor self-management remain unaddressed, it is critical to find ways in which clinicians or nurses can help motivate patients to participate in their care. The problem of patients with uncontrolled diabetes at the Davis Street Primary Care Clinic (DSPCC) has been ongoing; in fact, from the 2021 Uniform Data System (UDS) measure update, rates of patients with uncontrolled diabetes (measured by HbA1c values >7%) have gone up from 55% to 80%, which …

Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening In Primary Care, Bushra Iqbal May 2022

Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening In Primary Care, Bushra Iqbal

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the U.S., although it is preventable with adequate routine screening. Medically underserved minorities and immigrants require screening program awareness in their respective communities. The incidence of CRC remains markedly high despite the screening modalities among various populations. In the United States (U.S.), there were approximately 147,950 reported CRC diagnoses, 53,200 deaths, and over 35.2 cases per 100,000 in California alone reported in 2020 (Siegel et al., 2020). Healthcare providers can prevent colorectal cancer (CRC) through adequate routine screening. Various screening practices are widely implemented in primary cases …

Although tobacco use is an independent adverse prognostic feature in HPV(+) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), the biologic features associated with tobacco use have not been systematically investigated. We characterized genomic and immunologic features associated with tobacco use through whole exome sequencing, mRNA hybridization, and immunohistochemical staining in 47 HPV(+) OPSCC tumors. Low expression of transcripts in a T cell-inflamed gene expression profile (TGEP) was associated with tobacco use at diagnosis and lower overall and disease-free survival. Tobacco use was associated with an increased proportion of T > C substitutions and a lower proportion of expected mutational signatures, but not with …

KIP Articles

The Shelta Cave Crayfish ( Orconectes sheltae ) is a small, cave-obligate member of the genus Orconectes (family Cambaridae) endemic to a single cave system—Shelta Cave—in northwest Huntsville, Madison Co., Alabama, USA. Although never abundant, this stygobiont was regularly observed in the 1960s and early 1970s before the population and aquatic community in general at Shelta Cave collapsed likely in response to groundwater contamination and the loss of energetic inputs from a Grey Bat ( Myotis grisescens ) maternity colony that abandoned the cave after installation of a poorly designed cave gate. We conducted 20 visual surveys of aquatic habitats …

Hydrodynamic Limitations To Mangrove Seedling Retention In Subtropical Estuaries, Kelly M. Kibler, Christian Pilato, Linda Walters, Melinda Donnelly, Jyotismita Taye

Flow-biota Interaction and Natural Infrastructure Design

Mangrove forest sustainability hinges upon propagule recruitment and seedling retention. This study evaluates biophysical limitations to mangrove seedling persistence by measuring anchoring force of two mangrove species (Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans). Anchoring force was measured in 362 seedlings via lateral pull-tests administered in mangrove forests of two subtropical estuaries and in laboratory-based experiments. Removal mechanism varied with seedling age: newly-established seedlings failed due to root pull-out while seedlings older than 3 months failed by root breakage. Anchoring force of R. mangle seedlings was consistently and significantly greater than A. germinans (GLM: p = 0.002), however force to …

Articles & Book Chapters

Assumptions of trust in water systems are widespread in higher-income countries, often linked to expectations of “modern water.” The current literature on water and trust also tends to reinforce a technoscientific approach, emphasizing the importance of aligning water user perceptions with expert assessments. Although such approaches can be useful to document instances of distrust, they often fail to explain why patterns differ over time, and across contexts and populations. Addressing these shortcomings, we offer a relational approach focused on the trustworthiness of hydro-social systems to contextualize water-trust dynamics in relation to broader practices and contexts. In doing so, we investigate …
