Save Lives And Sanitize: Prevention Of Surgical Site Infections Post-Cesarean Section Through Increased Hand Hygiene Compliance, Lindsay N. Nance
Save Lives And Sanitize: Prevention Of Surgical Site Infections Post-Cesarean Section Through Increased Hand Hygiene Compliance, Lindsay N. Nance
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Surgical site infections (SSIs) occur in 3-15% of cesarean sections, making SSIs one of the most common hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Surgical site infections (SSIs) have increased within a Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit in a large California teaching hospital for the past three years, affecting reimbursement and creating a range of adverse outcomes for patients. Performance of consistent and thorough hand hygiene practices is key to preventing infection, yet the unit’s hand hygiene compliance of 66.7% is well below the facility’s target goal of 90%. Based on recommendations from the organization’s Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) specialist, the …

Digital Politics: Dds And Political Propagandain The Context Of Baudrillard’S Hyperreality, Mark Gatus, Marcky Zaldy Camba
Mabini Review
Digital media can shape people’s political perspectives as it is used as a medium for communication and information. In the Philippines, the use of Facebook has become an avenue not just for socialization but also, for political discourse. Being considered as one of the world’s top Facebook users, Facebook is used by individuals to serve as a platform to construct propaganda networks. Diehard Duterte Supporters (also known as the “DDS”) use this digital media platform to rally behind President Duterte, promote his achievements, and also, to defend him against criticisms. On the other hand, Jean Baudrillard believes that media plays …

The Role Of Intellectuals In Shaping Hegemony,Consent, And Political Emotion, Oliver Dueza, Gerlie Ogatis, Anna Josa Ortiz
The Role Of Intellectuals In Shaping Hegemony,Consent, And Political Emotion, Oliver Dueza, Gerlie Ogatis, Anna Josa Ortiz
Mabini Review
This paper aims to expose the underlying forces which shaped the hegemonic character of the Philippine civil society. The ideas of Gramsci written in his prison notebooks remained relevant even at present, especially in understanding the capitalists’ control of social and political affairs. The state of the Filipino society today mirrors Gramsci’s conception of capitalism and its influences on the political and social affairs. Despite Karl Marx’s prediction of its death, the capitalist class managed to evolve, and it even survived with ethical measures involved. It is here where Gramsci believed that there is a need for the intellectuals to …
Psychosocial Distress Screening For Patients With Cancer: A Value-Based Approach To The Integration And Delivery Of Holistic Care, Candy Cheung
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Patients with cancer (PWC) have a high prevalence of experiencing psychosocial distress as they bear the burden of the disease. Emphasis is needed on psychosocial care, as the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacts mental health. Psychosocial distress screening is considered a standard practice by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), which recommends using the validated Distress Thermometer (DT) as a screening tool.
Local Problem: The DNP project ambulatory infusion clinic (AIC) site does not have a standardized distress screening tool for staff. There was a lack of awareness of an existing non-validated distress screening and little to no intervention or …
Save The Children® Community Health Worker Program - Prenatal Care, Deirdre A. Martinez
Save The Children® Community Health Worker Program - Prenatal Care, Deirdre A. Martinez
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The United States continues to have an unacceptably high rate of preventable deaths among pregnant and new mothers—the highest rate among developed countries. Pregnancy outcomes are especially poor in minority, rural, and medically-underserved populations, with lack of access to healthcare being identified as a primary factor in poor pregnancy outcomes and pregnancy-related deaths. It is imperative that action be taken to reverse this disturbing trend. Introduction of the Community Health Worker (CHW) into the multidisciplinary healthcare team is a solution that results in increased access to healthcare, along with many other positive health outcomes, and is one way in which …
Integrating Culturally Tailored Interventions To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening: A Quality Improvement Initiative In A Primary Care Clinic, Marife Centeno Solomon
Integrating Culturally Tailored Interventions To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening: A Quality Improvement Initiative In A Primary Care Clinic, Marife Centeno Solomon
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Background: While the incidence of cervical cancer in the US has significantly decreased due to the utilization of vaccination and screening tests, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander women consistently have the lowest rate of cervical cancer screening, making them at risk for undetected cervical cancer disease.
Problem: The low cervical cancer screening uptake can be attributed to a knowledge deficit about cervical cancer and its screening and the importance of early detection. Being an immigrant and with limited English proficiency can hinder women of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander from getting screened for cervical …
Can Hope Be Primed In Chronic Pain? A Clinical Application Of Health Priming, Brenda Stockdale
Can Hope Be Primed In Chronic Pain? A Clinical Application Of Health Priming, Brenda Stockdale
Educational Studies Dissertations
ABSTRACT
It is recognized that nonintentional, automatic processing shapes physical health and well-being in critical ways. Conditioning––or priming––has been shown to influence attitude, beliefs, agency, behavior, and medical outcomes. Although expectations and beliefs correlate strongly with physical health, research in clinical application is needed, and studies on hope, as related to agency, in chronic pain are rare. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether, in a chronic pain sample (N = 154), hope could be primed via a Pain Neuroscience Educational (PNE) tutorial. A pre- and post-test intervention study consisting of two randomized parallel groups was designed …

A Rapidly Growing Mesenchymal Hamartoma In A Neonate With Known Placental Anomalies, Justin Bauzon, Desiree Morris, Charles St. Hill, Taylor Schanda, Michael Scheidler, Shirong Chang
Department of Surgery Faculty Research
Hepatic mesenchymal hamartomas (HMH) are benign liver lesions that present as cystic, slow growing masses within the first few years of life. Few cases demonstrate placental abnormalities and abnormal levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). We report an unusual case of a rapidly growing HMH with associated placental anomalies and elevated AFP. A 2-month-old female born prematurely due to concerning placental findings presented with a prenatally-identified liver mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a marked increase in the size of the mass over a three- month period. Prior to surgery, the AFP was elevated and decreased after operative resection. Histopathology confirmed the …

Stop The Bleed And Seize Control: Educating Emergency Department Staff On Maternal Hypertension And Hemorrhage, Mayra A. Portillo-Guerra
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: A Not-for-Profit Hospital accredited by the Joint Commission was fined for not having a current policy or procedure set in place for the treatment of obstetric emergencies. This quality improvement project implemented a simulation and a training video to prepare Emergency Department (ED) nurses and clinical staff for the awareness of preeclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
Context: This quality improvement project was implemented in two different Emergency Room locations for this Not-for-Profit Hospital. One of the campuses does not have a Labor and Delivery (L&D) unit while the other one does. The overarching goal is to increase awareness of …

Stop The Bleed And Seize Control: The Use Of Simulation And Video Modules In Educating Emergency Department Staff Regarding Maternal Hypertension And Hemorrhage, Jared Maxwell Talsky
Master's Projects and Capstones
In order to address shortcomings of the health care system within the United States surrounding the early recognition and response to preeclampsia (PreE) and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) emergencies The Joint Commission (TJC) revised the accreditation requirements regarding implementing yearly maternal hypertension and hemorrhage simulation scenarios in emergency departments. A Quality improvement team of Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) students at University of San Francisco, working alongside the emergency department and labor and delivery department nurse educators assisted a dual hospital system in the Bay Area of California to develop and implement training materials and simulations for the hospital system’s Emergency Department …
