This purpose of this project is to examine how the labels used to describe the Irish Republican Army and Chechen insurgency changed after certain acts of violence. This paper begins by describing the history of imperial subjugation of Ireland and Chechnya, as well as examining the similarities between the actions and motivations of the IRA and Chechen insurgency. Then, to study the change in language to describe these groups, two searches were conducted into the New York Times and International Newsstream databases. The wavelength is used to identify the exact location and quantify the number of molecules in the spectral imaging system. It aids in identifying materials and studying their quantities by examining how they interact with light. A traditional spectrometer provides spectrum information of chemical compounds, while standard imaging provides the intensity at each pixel of the image. Spectral imaging (SI) combines these two aspects by equipping intensity and spectral data for each pixel. This thesis project explores the motivations behind the bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) renegotiation between Chile and South Korea. Existing studies have examined the reasons and outcomes of creating the initial Chile-South Korea FTA, but they have not focused on renegotiations between the two countries. A few investigations on renegotiations have focused on diversifying their exports and expanding their markets in each other's regions. However, most research lacks further exploration of both countries' market security concerns. Approximately 40% of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer (BC) patients develop resistance to endocrine therapy (ET) agents like tamoxifen (Tam). Resistance promotes metastasis, recurrence, and death since metastatic BC is often incurable. Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) greatly contribute to disease progression and drug resistance. We previously showed that aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist aminoflavone (AF) inhibits the expression of CSC biomarker α6-integrin (ITGA6) to disrupt the formation of endocrine-sensitive and -resistant luminal A mammospheres. Patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) possess tumors that lack estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human growth factor receptor 2 expression. Such patients have lower survival rates than those diagnosed with other breast cancer subtypes in part, due to the scarcity of targeted therapy for TNBC. In addition to chemotherapy, patients with TNBC often consume natural remedies, which has led us and others to evaluate the ability of plant isolates to confer anticancer and chemopreventive actions. Native American leaders of the Wabanaki community can provide great insight on how to build positive close-knit relationships within a community. Previous research has focused on other tribal nations such as the Cherokee and servant leadership. But few studies have explored authentic leadership in the Wabanaki community. Authentic leadership occurs naturally in the Wabanaki Nation through their cultural upbringing and the leaders' authenticity projects back into the community. This phenomenology study explores authentic leadership within the Wabanaki Nation and how it contributes to the cultivation of positive relationships within the community. Proofs of linearizability are typically intricate and lengthy, and readers may find it difficult to verify their correctness. We present a unique technique for producing proofs of linearizability that are fully verifiable by a mechanical proof system, thereby eliminating the need for any manual verification. Specifically, we reduce the burden of proving linearizable object implementations correct to the proof of a particular invariant whose correctness can be shown inductively. Forest-dwelling fungi are critical to ecosystem function in their roles as decomposers and nutrient cyclers, food sources, pathogens, and mycorrhizal symbionts. In northern New England, a region with a substantial timber industry, the degree to which fungal communities are resilient to timber harvest, as well as their ability to recolonize post-disturbance, may impact ecosystem function and forest regeneration. In this thesis, we investigate the impacts of (1) timber harvest on fungal fruiting, an important element of fungal reproduction, and (2) the dispersal mechanisms by which fungi may re-colonize harvested areas. GLI3 is an important protein traditionally found in the Sonic Hedgehog pathway. It is involved in numerous events that take place during embryogenesis such as the differentiation and patterning of cells in the body. Monocytes are important innate immune cells which infiltrate the site of inflammation when a pathogen invades our body. Gli3 has also been shown to be upregulated in monocytes following pathogen stimulation, suggesting Gli3 could have an important role in mediating the release of inflammatory signals known as cytokines. Salmonids play a major role in aquaculture globally and their production is expected to increase as the human population rises and wild fish stocks decline. Sea lice infestation is the largest economic burdens to salmonid net pen aquaculture with hundreds-of-millions of dollars lost due to the treatment, labor, and loss of biomass associated with these parasitic copepods. Chemotherapeutics were originally used to treat these infestations, but their effects on nontarget species resulted in them being banned in many countries. Most nutrients and contaminants within municipal wastewaters are removed through physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) that are concentrated in wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) from municipal, industrial, and commercial sources in communities. PFAS are poorly removed in conventional municipal wastewater treatment because these facilities are generally not designed for treatment of low-level CECs. Some PFAS leave WWTFs through aqueous effluent, while others partition to solids and are handled in sludges due to properties based on the degree of fluorination, chain length, and headgroup. As water moves through pipes, it loses energy. The energy losses are due to friction and the minor losses associated with various pipe fittings, which change the direction of flow. Pipe bends, or elbows, are a common pipe fitting and a significant source of energy loss in piping systems. This research was performed to better understand the variability of energy loss due to different pipe elbow designs and to investigate methods to replicate these losses using numerical simulations.

Lung cancer is a highly aggressive disease responsible for ~25% of all cancer-related deaths, due in part to its proclivity to metastasize. Treating metastasis holds potential for improving patient survival but requires a deeper investigation into the underlying mechanisms. Some of these processes that can regulate metastasis are: (1) Oncogenic targets of epithelial micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are epigenetically de-repressed upon loss of the miRNAs during epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and in cancer. Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a multi-systemic genetic disorder with great clinical variability. As the needs of one child with TSC may vastly differ from another, parenting demands may similarly differ. Characterizing parental stress, or emotional maladaptation arising from parenting duties, can enable healthcare providers to assist parents of children most efficiently with TSC-related symptoms and improve both parent and child health outcomes. This study surveyed 269 parents of children (aged 0-12 years) with TSC and received the following information: children’s TSC clinical features, parent demographics, and a Parent Stress Index (PSI) score. Currently, there is limited information about how conceiving through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) impact the decisions individuals make about prenatal genetic testing. This quantitative study aimed to examine the prenatal testing decisions made by pregnant individuals who conceived via IVF as well as to compare the prenatal testing decisions and motivations between those who had PGT-A and those who did not. An anonymous survey was distributed through online support forums and in clinical settings to eligible individuals. Radiotherapy of colorectal cancer (CRC) can prime adaptive immunity against tumor-associated antigen (TAA)-expressing CRC cells systemically. However, incidences of abscopal tumor remission are extremely rare, and the post-irradiation immune escape mechanisms in CRC remain elusive. We report that CRC cells utilize a common DNA repair signaling pathway — ATR/Chk1/STAT3 — to upregulate both CD47 and PD-L1 in response to radiotherapy, which through engagement of SIRPα and PD-1 suppresses the capacity of antigen-presenting cells to phagocytose them thereby preventing TAA cross-presentation and innate immune activation. DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) are a common DNA lesion naturally arising in cells, wherein protein becomes covalently and irreversibly bound to the DNA. Given their excessive size, these adducts present a significant challenge to replication and transcription, thus requiring timely and efficient repair. However, the precise mechanisms involved with processing DPC removal remain unclear. Moreover, current methodologies to quantitate DPC accumulation and removal are restrained by a range of limitations.
