Firms’ productivity gain and technological innovation have been vital to ensure a country’s long-term economic growth and competitive advantage. This dissertation focuses mainly on drivers and barriers nurturing to firms’ productivity gains and innovative activities to suggest policy implications. The first essay examines the impacts of inventor mobility in value creation in mergers and acquisitions (M&As). We employ a two-sided matching model for acquirers and targets that allows them to choose whom to merge with. The decision of a stem cell to either self-renew or differentiate is controlled by specific cellularpathways that can act at the level of transcription, translation, or post-translation. To study the regulation of these pathways in-vivo, I have used the female Drosophila germline as a model system. Each of the steps from germline stem cell (GSC) to egg require changes in cellular pathways. These changes can occur at the level of transcription, post-transciption, translation, or post-translation . Muscles are a crucial part of an organism’s wellbeing, as defects in distinct types of muscles can be lethal. Our voluntary muscles, skeletal muscles, go through distinct regeneration phases before reaching maturity. With its own pool of stem cells, muscles have a large potential for regeneration. Graduate students are the principal proponents of academia and its ecosystem. In addition to challenging curriculums, teaching and research responsibilities, caregiving demands, and lingering student loans, graduate students are also particularly vulnerable to stress. These factors all adversely affect graduate students' mental health. Using longitudinal data from 247 graduate students over the span of six months, this study examines how self-reported depression and anxiety may influence graduate students’ workaholism through increased loneliness based on the mood congruency judgment effect. Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) are common: 25 to 50% of patients seen in primary care present with MUS (e.g., fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue). Patients with MUS report higher symptom severity, psychological distress, and poorer functioning and quality of life than patients without MUS. To address the needs of patients with MUS, behavioral interventions (e.g., cognitive behavior therapy and exercise) have been used to improve patient outcomes including symptom severity, psychological distress, and quality of life. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 was the only Russian military offensive that had adequate warning that the Russians would invade. With the rise of gun-based crime and the advent of lead-free ammunition reducing the effectiveness of previously used methods, the analysis of smokeless powders to better understand organic gunshot residues is now more important than ever. One method that has shown potential is Raman spectroscopy, a relatively quick, nondestructive, and non-contact analysis method. Transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) is a non-coding RNA which interacts with the messenger RNA (mRNA) to facilitate protein synthesis. tRNA is also one of the most heavily modified RNAs with the collection of modifications, termed as the tRNA epitranscriptome, ranging from simple methylation to complex hypermodification catalyzed by RNA epitranscriptomic writers. Background: Air pollution leads to more than four million premature deaths worldwide and nearly 200,000 in the US each year. While there is extensive research relating PM2.5 to hospital visits for various health outcomes, there is relatively little research on ultrafine particles (UFPs), a particularly small and dangerous air pollutant. Another important exposure is temperature due to its association with dehydration, heat stress, and cardiovascular-related hospital admissions. Innocence organizations contributed to 45% of exonerations in the year 2020, and account for nearly 25% of all U.S. exonerations. Yet little is known about these organizations, including a review of their intake criteria and procedures, how they select their intake criteria and procedures, or how those choices influence the landscape of known wrongful convictions. The contents of these intake decisions as well as how they are chosen have implications for what is currently known about wrongful convictions nation-wide. The Spain he ruled over was war-torn and fractured, grieving over lost loved ones and burning towns. As he looked to repair Spain, Franco turned to education. An activity-dependent increase in postsynaptic currents produced by a single vesicle of neurotransmitter is an important mechanism for synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system (CNS) and possibly involved in learning and memory. We have found a similar form of postsynaptic potentiation at the D. Melanogaster neuromuscular junction (NMJ) where a brief increase in impulse activity results in an increase in the amplitude of spontaneous miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs), resulting in miniature excitatory postsynaptic potentials (mEPSPs). The circadian rhythm affects behavior and physiology in many animal species. Our previous work in mice showed that within the hippocampus, a subordinate circadian oscillator, astrocytes change their proximity to excitatory synapses. Here we obtain 3D reconstructions of biocytin-filled hippocampal astrocytes processed with protein retention expansion microscopy and imaged using two-photon laser scanning microscopy. Our findings identify the subtle changes in astrocyte morphologies that encode information about time-of-day in hippocampal astrocytes. These findings shed light on fundamental mechanisms that allow the function of hippocampal circuits to adapt to different times of the day. This will help us understand how structural …
