A Direct Method For Modeling And Simulations Of Elliptic And Parabolic Interface Problems, Kumudu Janani Gamage May 2022

A Direct Method For Modeling And Simulations Of Elliptic And Parabolic Interface Problems, Kumudu Janani Gamage

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Interface problems have many applications in physics. In this dissertation, we develop a direct method for solving three-dimensional elliptic interface problems and study their application in solving parabolic interface problems. As many of the physical applications of interface problems can be approximated with partial differential equations (PDE) with piecewise constant coefficients, our derivation of the model is focused on interface problems with piecewise constant coefficients but have a finite jump across the interface. The critical characteristic of the method is that our computational framework is based on a finite difference scheme on a uniform Cartesian grid system and does not …

The development of the flight control system without prior knowledge of the aircraft aerodynamic model makes use of TakagiSugeno-Kang fuzzy logic inference systems for pitch and roll controllers and are tested in various simulations and …

Simultaneous Alcohol And Cannabis Use In College Students: Examining Context, Route Of Administration, Cognitive Factors, And Consequences Via Daily Diary, Jennifer Lynn Shipley May 2022

Simultaneous Alcohol And Cannabis Use In College Students: Examining Context, Route Of Administration, Cognitive Factors, And Consequences Via Daily Diary, Jennifer Lynn Shipley

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Cannabis and alcohol use are pervasive among college students. Simultaneous alcohol and cannabis (commonly referred to as simultaneous alcohol and marijuana [SAM]) use (i.e., effects overlap) is more prevalent than concurrent alcohol and cannabis (commonly referred to as concurrent alcohol and marijuana [CAM]) use (i.e., effects do not overlap). Consequences of SAM use are often greater than CAM or single substance use. Research has explored cognitions (motives, expectancies) and contexts (environmental, social) as predictors of SAM use among adolescents, young adults, and adults; however, research is needed among college students specifically. Limited research has examined type of alcohol and route …

Development Of High Conductivity Copper Coatings For Srf Cavity, Himal Pokhrel May 2022

Development Of High Conductivity Copper Coatings For Srf Cavity, Himal Pokhrel

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The development of metallic coatings with high purity and high thermal conductivity at cryogenic temperature could be very important for application to the superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavity technology. The deposition of such bulk coatings on the outer surface of a niobium cavity could result in higher heat conductance and mechanical stiffness, both of which are crucial for enhancing the cavity performance at a reduced cost.

Cold spray technology was used to deposit bulk coatings of pure copper and copper-tungsten alloys on the niobium substrate and the samples of size 2 mm × 2 mm cross section were cut and subjected …

The Carrot Vs. The Stick: A Comparative Analysis Of Secondary Sanctions Vs. Positive Inducements In Gaining European Support For A U.S.-Led Sanction Regime, Andy Gomez May 2022

The Carrot Vs. The Stick: A Comparative Analysis Of Secondary Sanctions Vs. Positive Inducements In Gaining European Support For A U.S.-Led Sanction Regime, Andy Gomez

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The United States has a history of imposing its will on other countries via aggressive sanction regimes. In many of those regimes, U.S. policymakers note that support from European partner states is paramount to the regime's success. Over the past 20 years, the U.S. and its European partner state's interests have had relatively aligned, fostering cooperation and implementation of like-minded policies against target states. The end of paralleled interests left policymakers with a conundrum, which stemmed the research question of this study. What circumstances determine whether secondary sanctions or positive inducements are more effective in gaining European support for a …

Southerners On New Ground: The Battle For Civil War Memory Since 1993, Andrew William Hoffman May 2022

Southerners On New Ground: The Battle For Civil War Memory Since 1993, Andrew William Hoffman

History Theses & Dissertations

Between the years 2015 and 2020, over 300 Confederate symbols, including over 140 monuments, were removed from public land across the United States. This unprecedented movement to discard Confederate symbols reflected a shift in how Americans chose to remember the Civil War. By 2015, the wide-spread attack on the legacy of the Confederacy was much-anticipated. In fact, its foundation was laid during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. This thesis fills a gap within the historiography of Civil War memory by exploring controversial events that reflect Americans’ contrasting interpretation of the American Civil War from the years 1993 to …

Hold That Pose: Capturing Cervical Dystonia's Head Deviation Severity From Video, Zheng Zhang, Joel S Perlmutter, Et Al May 2022

Hold That Pose: Capturing Cervical Dystonia's Head Deviation Severity From Video, Zheng Zhang, Joel S Perlmutter, Et Al

2020-Current year OA Pubs

OBJECTIVE: Deviated head posture is a defining characteristic of cervical dystonia (CD). Head posture severity is typically quantified with clinical rating scales such as the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS). Because clinical rating scales are inherently subjective, they are susceptible to variability that reduces their sensitivity as outcome measures. The variability could be circumvented with methods to measure CD head posture objectively. However, previously used objective methods require specialized equipment and have been limited to studies with a small number of cases. The objective of this study was to evaluate a novel software system-the Computational Motor Objective Rater …

Implementation Of An Extended Kalman Filter Using Inertial Sensor Data For Uavs During Gps Denied Applications, Sky Seliquini May 2022

Implementation Of An Extended Kalman Filter Using Inertial Sensor Data For Uavs During Gps Denied Applications, Sky Seliquini

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are widely used across the industry and have a strong military application for defense. As UAVs become more accessible so does the increase of their applications, now being more limited by one’s imagination as opposed to the past where micro electric components were the limiting factor. Almost all of the applications require GPS or radio guidance. For more covert and longer range missions relying solely on GPS and radio is insufficient as the Unmanned Aerial System is vulnerable to malicious encounters like GPS Jamming and GPS Spoofing. For long range mission GPS denied environments are common …

The nation is at a critical juncture in history as it seeks to increase the number of students who enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. The national push to have a properly trained STEM workforce was at the forefront of the past administration’s top priority list. The higher education community has a unique opportunity to contribute to the creation of a sustainable U.S. STEM workforce. Although significant progress has been made in STEM fields, some argue that movement has been too slow in certain cases, as shown in degrees earned by women in engineering (National Academies of …

Rape, Consent, And The U.S. Military, Siris Fernandez May 2022

Rape, Consent, And The U.S. Military, Siris Fernandez

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The military’s sexual assault prevention and response program is unable to effectively eliminate or even minimize occurrences of sexual assault in the service. This program focuses primarily on the elimination of sexual assault through yearly mandatory education on the current policies and procedures that occur when a victim comes forward. The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program is reactionary and unequipped to tackle a culture that continues to promote a climate in which sexual assault and harassment exist without fear of retaliation. This thesis explores these issues and provides suggestions for changes in future revisions of the SAPR program. …

Investigating Psychological Capital As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Incivility And Stem Students' Major Embeddedness, Kristen Denae Eggler

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Increasing the number of students who graduate from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors is a national priority in the United States as there is a need for more STEM employees in the labor force. However, less than half of students who initially declare a major in STEM graduate college with a STEM degree, in part because of the unwelcoming climate in STEM. The aim of the current study was to understand how incivility may undermine a student’s embeddedness within their undergraduate major and whether the individual difference of Psychological Capital could assuage the undermining effects. The presence of …

Effects Of Income Disparity On Relationships, B. Lynn Mcelyea May 2022

Effects Of Income Disparity On Relationships, B. Lynn Mcelyea

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Shifting social norms are leading to changes in family structures. More women are working, and more families are relying on dual income to provide for the household than ever before. These changes in family income are happening fairly quickly in our society and for that reason, as our society shifts towards a more egalitarian mindset, we should view these variables using primary and secondary earner as opposed to through the lens of a husband and a wife. The aim of this study was to examine relationship satisfaction and how that might be affected by differences in income or earner status …

Optimization Of 8-Plate Multi-Resonant Coupling Structure Using Class-E2 Based Capacitive-Wireless Power Transfer System, Yashwanth C. Bezawada May 2022

Optimization Of 8-Plate Multi-Resonant Coupling Structure Using Class-E2 Based Capacitive-Wireless Power Transfer System, Yashwanth C. Bezawada

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Capacitive-wireless power transfer (CPT) effectively charges battery-powered devices without a physical contact. It is an alternative to inductive-wireless power transfer (IPT) which is available in the present market. Compared with IPT, CPT offers flexibility in designing the coupling section. Because of its flexibility, CPT utilizes various coupling methods to enhance the coupling capacitance. Misalignment is a common issue in any WPT system. Among IPT and CPT, IPT has better performance for misalignments, but it requires bulk and expensive ferrite core to attain a high coupling coefficient. This work focuses on designing a CPT system to minimize the impact of misalignments. …

Investigating Arrhythmia Potential In Cardiac Myocytes In Presence Of Long Qt Syndrome, Victoria Lin Lam May 2022

Investigating Arrhythmia Potential In Cardiac Myocytes In Presence Of Long Qt Syndrome, Victoria Lin Lam

Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) is an increasingly studied condition that leads to potentially fatal heart rhythm disorders, called arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. The alterations in the electrocardiograms (ECGs) seen in LQTS patients is caused by mutations to genes related to ion channels in cardiac cells. Computational modeling allows the mechanistic study of these ion channel mutations in LQTS by providing quantitative predictors of cardiac behavior in human and rabbit heart models. This work hypothesizes that the repolarization reserve in cardiac Purkinje cells (PC), that form the cardiac conduction system, is lower than that of ventricular myocytes (VM), resulting in …

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

First-generation college students (FGCS) comprise approximately 56% of the U.S. post-secondary institution population, yet they face substantially more academic, financial, and additional unique issues than continuing-generation college students. Research on FGCS has been steadily growing in recent years, however, literature on identity for this population is sparse. To address these gaps in the literature, the aim of the current study was to adapt, validate, and establish full factorial measurement invariance across Black and White FGCS for a multidimensional quantitative measure of first-generation college student identity. The final sample included 425 current FGCS (81.2% female; Mage = 24.4 years, SD …

Three Essays On Clean Water State Revolving Funds: Determinants Of State Leveraging And Measurement Of Debt Affordability, Lien T. Nguyen May 2022

Three Essays On Clean Water State Revolving Funds: Determinants Of State Leveraging And Measurement Of Debt Affordability, Lien T. Nguyen

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

Leveraging is a popular option among Clean Water State Revolving Funds (CWSRFs). Most states choose to issue bonds to meet the requirement of the state match contribution, and to provide additional funding into the pool of funds available for community loan assistance. Leveraging offers short-term remedies to fill a financial resources gap; however, this raises concern about any costs associated with leveraging that might negatively influence the sustainability of CWSRFs in the long run. This dissertation comprises three essays that examine the different factors that motivate CWSRFs to leverage, and it offers a look at how they measure their affordability …

Postviral Gastroparesis Associated With Sars-Cov-2 Infection In A Pediatric Patient, Courtney M. Rusch, Jerome M. Molleston, Matthew F. Glasser, Steven Don, Sakil S. Kulkarni

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Postviral gastroparesis has been described in children, but it has not yet been attributed to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our case report describes a teenager with abdominal pain, early satiety, and vomiting who likely had an asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection 2 months before presentation. Through investigation of epidemiologic links, antibody testing, and clinical course, it is hypothesized that her significant reduction in gastric emptying was due to postviral gastroparesis secondary to SARS-CoV-2. She was treated with supportive care and prokinetic agents. The patient demonstrated symptom resolution and near normalization of gastric emptying by the time of 1 month follow up.

Five-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a chemotherapeutic agent that is mainly metabolized by the rate-limiting enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD). The DPD enzyme activity deficiency involves a wide range of severities. Previous studies have demonstrated the effect of a DPYD single nucleotide polymorphism on 5-FU efficacy and highlighted the importance of studying such genes for cancer treatment. Common polymorphisms of DPYD in European ancestry populations are less frequently present in Koreans. DPD is also responsible for the conversion of endogenous uracil (U) into dihydrouracil (DHU). We quantified U and DHU in plasma samples of healthy male Korean subjects, and samples were classified into …

Cardiac Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promote Fibrosis And Remodeling In Heart Failure: Role Of Pdgf Signaling, Tariq Hamid, Yuanyuan Xu, Mohamed Ameen Ismahil, Gregg Rokosh, Miki Jinno, Guihua Zhou, Qiongxin Wang, Sumanth D. Prabhu

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Heart failure (HF) is characterized by progressive fibrosis. Both fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can differentiate into pro-fibrotic myofibroblasts. MSCs secrete and express platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and its receptors. We hypothesized that PDGF signaling in cardiac MSCs (cMSCs) promotes their myofibroblast differentiation and aggravates post-myocardial infarction left ventricular remodeling and fibrosis. We show that cMSCs from failing hearts post-myocardial infarction exhibit an altered phenotype. Inhibition of PDGF signaling in vitro inhibited cMSC-myofibroblast differentiation, whereas in vivo inhibition during established ischemic HF alleviated left ventricular remodeling and function, and decreased myocardial fibrosis, hypertrophy, and inflammation. Modulating cMSC PDGF receptor …
