Background: Evidence shows a clear connection between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health disorders in adolescence. If not treated, adolescent victims of ACEs could develop maladaptive behaviors such as self-mutilation and suicidal ideation. The standard therapies to treat this population are psychotropic medications or cognitive behavior therapy.

Search Methodology: Ten studies from a literature search on CINAHL, PubMed, APA PsychInfo, and Joanna Briggs databases were selected, appraised, and reviewed.

The inhibitory effect of using avocado extract (AE) on the corrosion of stainless steel type 201 (201SS) in 1M hydrochloric acid has been studied. Chemical tests such as mass loss test (ML) and electrochemical such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PP) were used in this investigation. The results of these approaches showed that as the concentration of AE extract increase, their adsorption on the 201SS surface increases, and therefore the corrosion process lower. Understanding and addressing the perception of fairness in scheduling and incentives lets the healthcare system administration tailor scheduling needs to the staff nurses, thereby creating an environment that improves job satisfaction, work-life balance, and increased retention. This study was a mixed-method research project using questionnaires to compare what motivated registered nurses to work according to the nurse’s perception and the nurse manager’s perception of fairness in scheduling, self-scheduling, and incentives. The findings from this study indicated staff registered nurses and nurse managers had similar responses, however, comments highlighted the importance of fairness as it relates to job satisfaction. Introduction: Delirium is associated with longer hospital stays, increased mortality, high medical costs, and poorer functional outcomes (Oh et al., 2014; Robinson & Eiseman, 2008). This project evaluated the use of the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) tool to screen hospitalized older adult hip fracture patients for delirium. This project also measured the effectiveness of the implementation of the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) volunteers as a non-pharmacological intervention to alleviate delirium. This project was implemented on the Orthopedic/Neurological unit of a Midwest tertiary care hospital.

The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) uses clinical signs instead of diagnoses and has become the standard annotation for patients' phenotypes when describing single gene disorders. Use of the HPO beyond human genetics is however still limited. With SAMS (Symptom Annotation Made Simple), we want to bring sign-based phenotyping to routine clinical care, to hospital patients as well as to outpatients. There is a lack of evidence as to what is best practice to avoid a VOC pain crisis in pediatric sickle cell patients. Methods: We used data from the UK Biobank, a population-based cohort study of 502,649 individuals. Quercus palustris and Quercus alba acorns are a primary component in many wild animal diets, particularly during preparation for winter. As such, they provide a natural, easily gathered food staple for wildlife recovering in rehabilitation facilities. We examined whether collection and temperature-controlled storage methods differentially affect the nutritional deterioration of crude fat in acorns to assess both caching by wildlife and to provide recommendations to rehabilitators. Parents are known to be effective communication partners in their child’s augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention. The aim of this interview study was to better understand the parent perspective in the AAC acquisition, implementation, and handing processes across a range of primary disability labels and ages. Participants engaged in phone interviews to discuss their family’s experiences with AAC obtainment and intervention. Qualitative review of their responses developed the following five themes: assessment procedures, external variables that influence device use, barriers of AAC navigation, supports parents have indicated have helped them, and major takeaways as identified by parents. The introduction of invasive species is one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. Once established, invasive species often cause irreversible ecological damage on native communities. Here, I investigated the pathway of introduction and ecological impacts of the sheepshead minnow (C. variegatus) and the gulf killifish (F. grandis). Both species were thought to have been introduced into inland Texas waters via bait-bucket releases and have caused native populations of their inland congeners to decline. While I did not find evidence that either species were being sold in inland shops, bait industry experts did reveal other potentially …

Non-native, invasive species disrupt ecological processes and functions, posing a serious threat to natural ecosystems. By examining the growth metrics of the non-native, invasive tree, Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera [L.] Roxb.), hereafter tallow, across different flooding and light regimes, I investigated how restructuring native communities with valuable native species will prevent the reestablishment of tallow. I studied the changes in morphological and physiological traits of tallow when growing with water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica L.), sugarberry (Celtis occidentalis L.), and green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall). Semiaquatic snakes are disproportionately impacted by habitat alteration adjacent to wetlands because of their reliance on both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Brazos River Watersnakes, Nerodia harteri, are endemic natricines with one of the most restricted geographic ranges in North America. I quantified detection and site occupancy probabilities of N. harteri and its sympatric congeners (N. erythrogaster and N. rhombifer), as well as microhabitat selection within the Nerodia community. Within occupied transects, search effort was positively correlated with detecting N. harteri, whereas environmental and/or habitat variables were better predictors for detecting the sympatric congeners. Land use practices and physical alterations of ecosystems result in habitat loss and fragmentation, while chemical alterations, such as pollutant input, reduce habitat quality and health of exposed organisms. Here, I investigated the effects of watershed- and local-scale environmental variables on the occupancy, abundance, and mercury accumulation of a threatened aquatic species (Macrochelys temminckii, i.e., alligator snapping turtle) within the southwestern periphery of its distribution. Hierarchical modeling suggested the distribution of the species is more affected by watershed-scale land-cover than local habitat, and provided a baseline estimate of average species abundance across its range in eastern Texas.
