Off-target herbicide movement onto rice is an annual problem in rice-producing areas within Mississippi. In Mississippi, rice is routinely drill‐seeded in April to early May. Because these dates often coincide with preplant and/or preemergence (PRE) herbicide applications to corn (Zea mays L.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], drift onto neighboring rice crops is likely to occur. Although the effects of off-target movement of paraquat on rice may not be visibly apparent, the potential effect on rough rice yield could be detrimental. Numerous studies have examined the effect of natural disasters and social vulnerability indicators on broad factors using different theoretical frameworks; however, no study synthesizes a framework of theories to comprehensively examine the nexus among natural disasters, social vulnerability, subsidiarity principle, and government finance in the U.S. The dissertation utilizes a broad framework of theories to address two objectives of the dissertation namely the determinants of (1) infrastructure investment and (2) public assistance programs.

Background: In 2018, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) issued a protocol for the treatment of sepsis. This bundle protocol, titled SEP-1 is a multicomponent 3 h and 6 h resuscitation treatment for patients with the diagnosis of either severe sepsis or septic shock. The SEP-1 bundle includes antibiotic administration, fluid bolus, blood cultures, lactate measurement, vasopressors for fluid-refractory hypotension, and a reevaluation of volume status. We performed a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with either severe sepsis or septic shock comparing mortality outcomes based on compliance with the updated SEP-1 bundle at a rural community hospital.

Early clinical trials clearly demonstrated the superior efficacy of triple drug therapy with ivermectin plus DEC and albendazole (IDA) for clearing microfilaremia (Mf) in individuals with lymphatic filariasis (LF). Although these initial pharmacokinetic and efficacy studies were necessary first steps in the clinical development of IDA, they were not sufficient to justify policy changes necessary for widespread use of this new regimen by national filariasis elimination programs. Processes and procedures that led to the World Health Organization's (WHO) endorsement of IDA as a mass drug administration (MDA) regimen for LF are reviewed elsewhere in this Supplement. This article is a compilation of summaries prepared by lead investigators for large-scale safety and efficacy studies on mass drug administration of IDA (ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine, and albendazole) for lymphatic filariasis. The summaries highlight the experiences of study teams that assessed the safety and efficacy of IDA in five countries: India, Indonesia, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji. They also highlight significant challenges encountered during these community studies and responses to those challenges that contributed to success.

Abstract

Purpose: This purpose of the paper was to determine the perceived safety Ugandan LIS students and academics in electronic learning spaces and recommend strategies to promote safety for LIS scholars in online spaces.

Methodology: An online questionnaire with structured questions was sent out to undergraduate and graduate LIS students at Makerere University attracting over ninety (91) responses. Two (2) academic staff members were interviewed to obtain staff perspectives. Secondary data were collected from documents that have been drafted to guide online learning in Makerere University and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Concerns that athletes may be at a higher risk for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission has led to reduced participation in sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to assess COVID-19 incidence and transmission during the spring 2021 high school and college water polo seasons across the United States.

METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled 1825 water polo athletes from 54 high schools and 36 colleges. Surveys were sent to coaches throughout the season, and survey data were collected and analyzed.

A key component to achieving the global goal of elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is the availability of appropriate tools for disease mapping, monitoring, and surveillance. However, the development of these tools for a neglected disease such as LF can be a challenge. The lack of a commercial market and low familiarity with these diseases leave little incentive for diagnostic manufacturers to invest in this space. We propose Quantum Brain Networks (QBraiNs) as a new interdisciplinary field integrating knowledge and methods from neurotechnology, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. The objective is to develop an enhanced connectivity between the human brain and quantum computers for a variety of disruptive applications. We foresee the emergence of hybrid classical-quantum networks of wetware and hardware nodes, mediated by machine learning techniques and brain–machine interfaces. The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most heavily impacted areas by biological invasions worldwide, with over 650 non-indigenous species (NIS) reported as established in 2019.
