Investing Green To Become More Green: An Analysis Of Whether S&P 100 Companies Are Decreasing Their Carbon Footprint Proportional To Their Liquidity, Ashley Hendler, Ethan Hunter
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Global warming may have ignited the flame in corporations to invest in the changing business and environmental climate. The importance of a broader stakeholder value perspective has grown as firms have impacted the global environment. The S&P 100 firms are at the forefront of the public’s attention in maximizing shareholder and stakeholder value. With the worldwide expectation for corporate social responsibility, these top firms are not in question of whether they are investing in sustainability initiatives but to what extent. We seek to decipher if these top corporations are reducing their carbon footprint proportional to their excess available funds. Since …

Speechless: Understanding The Manufacture Of Omission In An Effort Toward A More Responsible Ethnography, Sophie Goldstein
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Narratives are versions of reality that are often fragile and always contingent. As such, the potential for anthropological knowledge production hinges on the gaps in narrative that result from omissions, exclusions, and silences on the part of both researcher and research subject. In this thesis, I draw attention to the ways anthropological knowledge is narrative knowledge, and, as such, can be productively engaged with the tools of narrative study. I contend with the excesses and omissions that shape the production of ethnographic narratives, and offer correctives born of this work that might allow for the production of more salient and …

"Nothing But The Son Of A Black Woman": Anti-Blackness, Gender Dynamics, And Muslim Communities Of Memphis, Zari Muhammad
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
The Nation of Islam (NOI) is largely responsible for the growth of Islam in America during the 20th century. However, they are often isolated from their Muslim counterparts, being framed as an “inauthentic” Islamic school of thought by Sunni Muslim communities. This is due in part to the different practices of Islam, but also a result of American systemic anti-Blackness. Furthermore, Black Muslim women face numerous problems in the NOI , as the internal gender dynamics are based on white nuclear family systems that lead to further gendered ostracization within these same communities. This is exemplified in Memphis, Tennessee, where …

Samples of fresh snow (n = 34) have been collected from 29 locations in various urban and remote regions of northern Iran following a period of sustained snowfall and the thawed contents examined for microplastics (MPs) according to established techniques. MP concentrations ranged from undetected to 86 MP L−1 (mean and median concentrations ~20 MP and 12 MP L−1, respectively) and there was no significant difference in MP concentration between sample location type or between different depths of snow (or time of deposition) sampled at selected sites. Fibres were the dominant shape of MP and μ-Raman spectroscopy of selected samples …
Improving Quality Of Communication In Pediatric Perioperative Outpatient Setting Using Aidet And Commit To Sit, Hyo Ryung Kim
Improving Quality Of Communication In Pediatric Perioperative Outpatient Setting Using Aidet And Commit To Sit, Hyo Ryung Kim
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Effective and therapeutic communication in the health care setting is multidisciplinary,
complex, and has unique challenges for each microsystem. The perioperative setting is an
especially challenging environment for healthcare workers to provide therapeutic
communication, as uniquely high-risk and time-sensitive information must be disseminated in a
language that is understandable for the patient(Osborne-Smith & Kyle Hodgen, 2017). A
microsystem assessment of an outpatient pediatric perioperative setting reflected some of the
challenges the healthcare workers were facing when communicating with their patients and
family members. Upon evaluation of the monthly NRC (National Research Corporation) score
prior to implementation of two …

Implementation Of Aidet, Commit To Sit, And Culturally-Competent Care In Pediatric Outpatient Setting, Melanie T. Wine
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: This quality improvement project implements AIDET, Commit to Sit, and culturally-competent care to improve patient satisfaction and communication between providers and patients in a diverse pediatric outpatient surgery microsystem setting. The microsystem’s NRC patient satisfaction scores from September to September is below the 85th percentile, and there is an immense desire to improve the overall scores by the staff. The detractors of the overall performance derived from the patients feeling that the staff needs to work together to meet patients’ needs, care providers not taking enough time to explain and listen, wanting to trust providers with care, procedures …
Addressing The Phenomena Of Nursing Burnout: Seeking The Need For Mental Health Interventions To Support The Nursing Workforce, Cialina L. Moy
Addressing The Phenomena Of Nursing Burnout: Seeking The Need For Mental Health Interventions To Support The Nursing Workforce, Cialina L. Moy
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Nursing burnout has been an existing phenomenon, which the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated. Burnout has contributed to escalated mental health concerns, increased staff turnover rates, and the nationwide nursing shortage.
Context: Studies indicate that depression, anxiety, and stress significantly correlate to burnout; studies also reveal that burnout consequently contributes to job dissatisfaction and organizational turnover. To reduce perceived burnout and increase nurse retention at the ambulatory COVID-19 clinics, nurses completed a pilot program that integrated two mental health tools.
Intervention: Nurses responded to a pre-survey to identify burnout factors and measure perceived burnout, using a modification of the …

Hapi Beds: A Quality Improvement Project To Reduce Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries, Jun Jie Tan
Master's Projects and Capstones
Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) remain a detrimental health problem that plagues hospital institutions and patients with a significant increase in morbidity and mortality. The development of HAPIs takes a tremendous toll on the patient, their family, as well as the healthcare system. Research has shown that there are multiple approaches in the prevention and treatment of HAPIs and one of the prominent methods includes choosing the appropriate bed surface tailored for the patient’s condition. This evidenced-based practice intervention was initiated with extensive literature review to contribute to the development of a new pressure injury surface selection algorithm for the …

Surgical Site Infections: Reducing Excessive Foot Traffic In The Surgical Room To Minimize The Risk Of Surgical Site Infections, Christopher D. Pobre
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: In 2021, a perioperative unit experienced 21 different surgical site infections (SSIs). SSIs are associated with increased medical complications and financial costs. One risk factor for SSIs is the increased or excessive operating room (OR) foot traffic, which increases airborne contaminants within the OR.
Context: A seven-room operating department performing 5,800 surgical procedures annually. The unit specializes in general, elective, and emergent procedures for the adult population predominately in the East Bay Area. A diverse mix of surgical procedures was observed throughout this project.
Assessment: A microsystem assessment was conducted to determine the causes and patterns that lead to …
Supporting The Nursing Workforce And Addressing The Phenomena Of Nursing Burnout With Evidence-Based Mental Health Interventions, Kelly Leung
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Burnout within healthcare has been an existing phenomenon, contributing to increased hospital staff turnover rates and the nationwide nursing shortage. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this issue leading to a decrease in the quality of patient care, nurse satisfaction, and organizational financial security.
Context: At a South Bay Area public healthcare system, staff were displaced throughout the community to support the overflow of COVID-19 patients at ambulatory clinics. Due to the nature of COVID-19, this healthcare system has experienced barriers in maintaining available staff for the demand of work. Studies indicate that signs of increased stress and burnout observed …
Stop The Bleed And Seize Control: The Use Of Simulation And Video Modules In Educating Emergency Department Staff Regarding Maternal Hypertension And Hemorrhage, Yvonne Oliva

Counting Every Drop: Preventing Maternal Mortality With Quantifying Blood Loss Through Triton Scale, Summer Le
Master's Projects and Capstones
Postpartum (PP) hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality (AWHONN, 2021). In each of the past three years, the percentage of PP hemorrhage has increased at Hospital X. The PP unit at Hospital X performs around 4,500 total deliveries each year. While the standard of care for PP blood loss is to specifically measure blood in milliliters as Quantifying Blood Loss (QBL) for Labor and Delivery (L&D), it is not yet the standard of care in the 24 hours postpartum after delivery (ACOG, 2019). This quality improvement project involved educating nurses about measuring blood loss – specifically …

Gut microbes can synthesize multiple neuro-active metabolites. We profiled neuro-active compounds produced by the gut commensal Bacteroides ovatus in vitro and in vivo by LC-MS/MS. We found that B. ovatus generates acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, and isovaleric acid. In vitro, B. ovatus consumed tryptophan and glutamate and synthesized the neuro-active compounds glutamine and GABA. Consistent with our LC-MS/MS-based in vitro data, we observed elevated levels of acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, and isovaleric acid in the intestines of B. ovatus mono-associated mice compared with germ-free controls. B. ovatus mono-association also increased the concentrations of intestinal GABA …

Although tobacco use is an independent adverse prognostic feature in HPV(+) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), the biologic features associated with tobacco use have not been systematically investigated. We characterized genomic and immunologic features associated with tobacco use through whole exome sequencing, mRNA hybridization, and immunohistochemical staining in 47 HPV(+) OPSCC tumors. Low expression of transcripts in a T cell-inflamed gene expression profile (TGEP) was associated with tobacco use at diagnosis and lower overall and disease-free survival. Tobacco use was associated with an increased proportion of T > C substitutions and a lower proportion of expected mutational signatures, but not with …

Gut dysbiosis, a pathological imbalance of bacteria, has been shown to contribute to the development of hypertension (HT), systemic- and neuro-inflammation, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in spontaneously hypertensive stroke prone rats (SHRSP). However, to date individual species that contribute to HT in the SHRSP model have not been identified. One potential reason, is that nearly all studies of the SHRSP gut microbiota have analyzed samples from rats with established HT. The goal of this study was to examine the SHRSP gut microbiota before, during, and after the onset of hypertension, and in normotensive WKY control rats over the same …

BACKGROUND:
Delays in endovascular reperfusion for patients with large vessel occlusion stroke are known to worsen outcomes, and the mechanism is believed to be time-dependent expansion of the ischemic infarction. In this study, we hypothesize that delays in onset to reperfusion (OTR) assert an effect on outcomes independent of effects of final infarct (FI).
METHODS:
We performed a subgroup analysis from the prospective multicenter COMPLETE (International Acute Ischemic Stroke Registry With the Penumbra System Aspiration Including the 3D Revascularization Device; Penumbra, Inc) registry for 257 patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion who underwent endovascular therapy with successful reperfusion (modified …

Objective
Placement of human placenta derived grafts during robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) hastens the return of continence and potency. The long-term impact on the oncologic outcomes remains to be investigated. Our objective was to determine the oncologic outcomes of patients with dehydrated human amnion chorion membrane (dHACM) at RARP compared to a matched cohort.
Methods
In a referral centre, from August 2013 to October 2019, 599 patients used dHACM in bilateral nerve spare RARP. We excluded patients with less than 12 months follow-up, simple prostatectomy, and unilateral nerve spare. Patients with dHACM (amnio group) were 529, and were propensity score …

As rates of urbanization and climatic change soar, decision-makers are increasingly challenged to provide innovative solutions that simultaneously address climate change impacts and risks and inclusively ensure quality of life for urban residents. Cities have turned to nature-based solutions to help address these challenges. Nature-based solutions, through the provision of ecosystem services, can yield numerous benefits for people and address multiple challenges simultaneously. Yet, efforts to mainstream nature-based solutions are impaired by the complexity of the interacting social, ecological, and technological dimensions of urban systems. This complexity must be understood and managed to ensure ecosystem-service provisioning is effective, equitable, and …

Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) User-Network Interface (UNI) client (UNI-C) to UNI network (UNI-N) environments created overlay models which broke the isolation barriers between the dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) world and Internet Protocol (IP) router world. Techniques are presented herein that support the bridging of a gap in an IP over DWDM environment. By applying aspects of the presented techniques, a DWDM interface becomes capable of knowing the actual data rate of a given IP interface. Such information is highly useful in traffic engineering (TE) decisions and vendor network optimizations.

This article seeks to show that courts face difficulties without a principled, constitutional anchoring for the conception of the common good. Courts could divine the common good from the penumbra of the Fourth Amendment in the same way the Supreme Court created a right to privacy. In addition to creating a “common good” constitutional principle, the judicial branch should establish criteria to determine when this principle should take precedence over individual rights expressly preserved in the Constitution.

A New Antitrust Framework To Protect Mom And Pop From Big Tech, Cara Macdonald
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
While the economy declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, big technology companies like Amazon and Oracle experienced unprecedented growth and influence.
