Implementation Of Aidet And Commit To Sit In Pediatric Outpatient Setting, Shibani Dhir
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: This quality improvement project implements AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, and Thank You), Commit to Sit, and cultural-competent care to improve patient satisfaction and communication between multidisciplinary health care team members and patients in a microsystem of a pediatric outpatient setting. The National Research Company (NRC) scores from the microsystem are below the 85th percentile, and this microsystem strives for excellence in the care provided to patients. The detractors from the patient satisfaction scores include patients scoring low on staff needing to work together, care providers not taking enough time to explain and listen, wanting to trust providers with …
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of 3d-Printed Viscoelastic Dampers, Mohammed Jaradat
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of 3d-Printed Viscoelastic Dampers, Mohammed Jaradat
Civil Engineering ETDs
Elastomeric materials are extensively used in energy dissipation applications to mitigate large lateral displacements and attenuate vibrations. One way of exploiting the capabilities of elastomeric materials is using shear-damping mechanisms such as viscoelastic damping devices (VEDs).
In this research the freedom of design offered by additive manufacturing technology is utilized to produce 3D printed elastomeric parts that act as the viscoelastic layer in an energy damping device. A mechanically interlocked viscoelastic damper (MIVED) with a jigsaw-like interlocking mechanism was designed and manufactured. MIVED is composed of a rigid and soft phase. It operates in two modes, modes I and II, …

Hankins, McEvoy, and Wright's article is a literature review focused on a better understanding religiously motivated terrorism. The researchers initially searched articles and unpublished ("grey") literature written between September 2001 to April 2018 for three key words. The initial search yielded 1275 papers, of which all but 12 were excluded due to not meeting their identified criteria. These 12 articles were evaluated and grouped into two thematic areas: Individual characteristics and sociocultural characteristics.
The Personalization Of American Christianity: Subjective Assurance And The Puritan Conversion Narrative, Curran Bishop
The Personalization Of American Christianity: Subjective Assurance And The Puritan Conversion Narrative, Curran Bishop
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The North American Puritans introduced a concept that has shaped American theology: a test of subjective assurance as a predicate to communing church membership. While previous Reformed communities had tested would-be communicants in their knowledge of church teaching and their adherence to that teaching in their lives. The New England colonists added a relation of the individual’s experiential conversion. This was intended to protect the purity of the church while also ministering to the individual by encouraging them in their faith by their inclusion in church membership. The results of the test led immediately to declining numbers of adults becoming …
Between The Garden And The Gardener, Sara Lynne Lindsay
Between The Garden And The Gardener, Sara Lynne Lindsay
Theses and Dissertations
My work uses plant material and soil as a record of personal, cultural, and ecological history. History is not only held in the buildings and monuments, but in the soil itself. I gather this soil and foliage from both cultivated and uncultivated locations for my artwork. Using traditional domestic techniques of drying and canning, I preserve the materials that I have gathered. These will then be sewn together, cooked, and encrusted into objects. Despite my labor of preserving, these organic art supplies are transient. When made into works of art, they can be viewed in their vulnerable state, fighting against …

Jasper Department of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The present work studies the adsorption of ethylene on Ni-H-Beta particles to unravel the roles of nickel and Brønsted sites in the catalytic oligomerization of ethylene. Three models (i.e., two based on the Cossee-Arlman mechanism and one based on the metallacycle mechanism) are examined in terms of the nature of the active sites and the adsorption mechanism involved in the ethylene coordination step. The results are consistent with the participation of two active sites in the formation of [Ni(II)-H]+ Cossee-Arlman centers and also suggest that ethylene dissociates upon adsorption on [Ni(II)-H]+ sites. Further characterization of Ni-H-Beta catalysts prepared at different …

Copper(I)‒Pyrazolate Complexes As Solid-State Phosphors: Deep- Blue Emission Through A Remote Steric Effect, Yuichiro Watanabe, Benjamin M. Washer, Matthias Zeller, Sergei Savikhin, Lyudmila V. Slipchenko, Alexander Wei
Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications
We describe a novel manifestation of rigidochromic behavior in a series of tetranuclear Cu(I)–pyrazolate (Cu4pz4) macrocycles, with implications for solid-state luminescence at deep-blue wavelengths (<460 nm). The Cu4pz4 emissions are remarkably sensitive to structural effects far from the luminescent core: when 3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazoles are used as bridging ligands, adding a C4 substituent can induce a blue shift of more than 100 nm. X-ray crystal and computational analyses reveal that C4 units influence the conformational behavior of adjacent tert-butyl groups, with a subsequent impact on the global conformation of the Cu4pz4 complex. Emissions are mediated primarily through a cluster-centered triplet (3CC) state; compression of the Cu4 cluster into a nearly close-packed geometry prevents the reorganization of its excited-state structure and preserves the 3CC energy at a high level. The remote steric effect may thus offer alternative strategies toward the design of phosphors with rigid excited-state geometries.

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
This research examines the interpretation of 1Cor. 11:27−29 and the practice of worthy admission to the Eucharist within the historical context and tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC). Christianity in Ethiopia has ancient roots in Judaism and in the apostolic tradition of the early church fathers, whose religious orientation and teaching shaped the church’s history, tradition, doctrine, and religious practices. In particular, we examine the church’s focus on the sanctity of the Eucharist and the acceptable celebration of and participation in the Sacrament by the faithful.
Analyzing the multi-facetted legacies of the EOTC, including Judaism and the early …
Theology Of The Laity: The Lutheran Way, Brian M. Mosemann
Theology Of The Laity: The Lutheran Way, Brian M. Mosemann
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The distinction between the laity and clergy has been a contributing cause of disunity within the church because the clergy and laity are often pitted against one another with one or the other being elevated to the detriment of the other. This problem has plagued the church from the middle ages until the present day. Since the definition of the term “laity” is vacuous, the laity are generally defined relative to the clergy, specifically in reference to their authority and duties. This results in a negative definition when the laity are defined as the opposite of the clergy. The laity …
A Rank-Based Analysis Of Word Order And Codification In The Greek Of The Pastoral Epistles, James Fickenscher
A Rank-Based Analysis Of Word Order And Codification In The Greek Of The Pastoral Epistles, James Fickenscher
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The relationship of word order and clausal structures with meaning, literary style, and authorial considerations in New Testament Greek is an often underdeveloped yet important field for reading, understanding, and interpreting the New Testament text. Navigating between a grammatical-historical and historical-critical reading of the New Testament, this dissertation analyzes the phenomena of word order and clausal structures afresh through the lens of systemic functional grammar, following the work of Michael Halliday. This project contributes a preliminary step forward in constructing a method that can account for and understand the purpose of word order patterns and variance from those patterns within …

Utilizing Training And Educational Materials To Increase Hand Hygiene Compliance Of Healthcare Providers Participating In Cesarean Sections, Christopher Natividad
Master's Projects and Capstones
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common complications of Cesarean section (C-section) procedures. The incidence of SSIs after C-section procedures at Hospital X has increased in each of the past three years. The Labor and Delivery (L&D) unit at Hospital X performs approximately 4,500 C-sections each year. Observation of these procedures illustrated a lack of adhesion to hand hygiene policies and protocols. This quality improvement project involved informing staff members of the poor hand hygiene compliance rates, and re-educating them regarding proper hand hygiene behavior using flyers, emails, and addressing them at shift change. Data collection focused …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: The microsystem for maternal-child healthcare in 2020 had 5.9% of deliveries progress to a postpartum hemorrhage. In 2021, the percentage of deliveries that progressed to a postpartum hemorrhage increased to 12.3%. The nearly two-fold increase in postpartum hemorrhage occurrence led to the creation of the Quality Improvement (QI) initiative to identify postpartum hemorrhage at an earlier stage. The QI initiative aims to extend the quantitative blood loss (QBL) measurement beyond labor and delivery, and support identification of postpartum hemorrhage in the postpartum period.
Context: The microsystem that this quality improvement project occurred on were three postpartum units in a …

Disadvantaged Students’ Experiences With Social Studies Distanced Learning: A Phenomenological Study, Supardi Supardi
The Qualitative Report
Distanced learning, for most people, is synonymous with internet-based education and high technology. High technology-based learning in distanced learning contrasts with the distributed learning experienced by children in disadvantaged areas. This topic is complex and requires attention so that no child is left behind; yet it is rarely discussed in literary works, especially the facts of distanced learning without the internet from students' point of view who directly experience the phenomenon. This study aims to explore students’ experiences in disadvantaged areas in Indonesia regarding the implementation of distanced learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the process of in-depth individual interviews …

Student Work
The species Xenopus laevis is native to sub saharan Africa, but ever since its discovery in effectiveness in pregnancy tests, the frog now lives invasively around the world. Today the Xenopus Laevis is used mostly in laboratories as a model organism for studying developmental biology (Willigan 2001). The commercialized herbicide Atrazine, has been found to interact with this model organism species in an odd way you might not have guessed (Sanders 2010). Atrazine is primarily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and has been shown to have neuroendocrine, reproductive, and developmental effects on experimental animals such as Xenopus laevis (ATSDR 2004). …

Hepatic mesenchymal hamartomas (HMH) are benign liver lesions that present as cystic, slow growing masses within the first few years of life. Few cases demonstrate placental abnormalities and abnormal levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). We report an unusual case of a rapidly growing HMH with associated placental anomalies and elevated AFP. A 2-month-old female born prematurely due to concerning placental findings presented with a prenatally-identified liver mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a marked increase in the size of the mass over a three- month period. Prior to surgery, the AFP was elevated and decreased after operative resection. Histopathology confirmed the …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We report tunable excitation-induced dipole-dipole interactions between silicon-vacancy color centers in diamond at cryogenic temperatures. These interactions couple centers into collective states, and excitation-induced shifts tag the excitation level of these collective states against the background of excited single centers. By characterizing the phase and amplitude of the spectrally resolved interaction-induced signal, we observe oscillations in the interaction strength and population state of the collective states as a function of excitation pulse area. Our results demonstrate that excitation-induced dipole-dipole interactions between color centers provide a route to manipulating collective intercenter states in the context of a congested, inhomogeneous ensemble.
