Student Papers, Posters & Projects

METHODS: We did a retrospective review of medical records and polysomnographic (PSG) data of patients with dream enactment behavior (DEB) from 2015 to 2020. REM sleep without atonia (RSWA) was scored according to the AASM rules, and %RSWA was calculated.

RESULTS: Thirty-six patients with DEB were analyzed. Recursive partitioning algorithm was used to determine the %RSWA that correlated with the presence or absence of Parkinson’s disease (PD). RSWA >=20% was present in 11 patients, and had the highest correlation with PD (9/11). RSWA of 2.1% to 19.9% was present in 10 patients, and had modest correlation with PD (3/10). RSWA= …

Examining How Early Career Teachers’ Experiences In Gvsu Schools Inform Future Plans, Kiel Mcqueen, Grand Valley State University Jun 2022

Examining How Early Career Teachers’ Experiences In Gvsu Schools Inform Future Plans, Kiel Mcqueen, Grand Valley State University

Charter School Research Reports

Studies have suggested that between 20 to 40 percent of teachers leave the profession in their first five years (Darling-Hammond & Sykes, 2003; Gray & Taie, 2015; Ingersoll 2003). Turnover tends to be higher in urban districts and schools serving students from historically marginalized communities. Increased teacher turnover is particularly problematic given the growing evidence that attrition harms schools, teachers, and students (Boyd, Lankford, Loeb, & Wyckoff, 2005; Ronfeldt, Loeb, and Wyckoff, 2013). The pandemic could intensify this problem given that the number of teachers reporting frequent job-related stress, symptoms of depression, and interest in careers outside of education have …

Consensus Embedding For Multiple Networks: Computation And Applications, Mengzhen Li, Mehmet Koyutürk Jun 2022

Consensus Embedding For Multiple Networks: Computation And Applications, Mengzhen Li, Mehmet Koyutürk

Faculty Scholarship

Machine learning applications on large-scale network-structured data commonly encode network information in the form of node embeddings. Network embedding algorithms map the nodes into a low-dimensional space such that the nodes that are “similar” with respect to network topology are also close to each other in the embedding space. Real-world networks often have multiple versions or can be “multiplex” with multiple types of edges with different semantics. For such networks, computation of Consensus Embeddings based on the node embeddings of individual versions can be useful for various reasons, including privacy, efficiency, and effectiveness of analyses. Here, we systematically investigate the …

Next-generation sequencing is a prevalent diagnostic tool for undiagnosed diseases and has played a significant role in rare disease gene discovery. While this technology resolves some cases, others are given a list of possibly damaging genetic variants necessitating functional studies. Productive collaborations between scientists, clinicians, and patients (affected individuals) can help resolve such medical mysteries, and provide insights into in vivo function of human genes. Furthermore, facilitating interactions between scientists and research funders, including non-profit organizations or commercial entities, can dramatically reduce the time to translate discoveries from bench to bedside. Several systems designed to connect clinicians and researchers with …

A Consistent Specification Test For Dynamic Quantile Models, Peter Horvath, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Andrew J. Patton Jun 2022

A Consistent Specification Test For Dynamic Quantile Models, Peter Horvath, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Andrew J. Patton

Research Collection School Of Economics

Correct specification of a conditional quantile model implies that a particular conditional moment is equal to zero. We nonparametrically estimate the conditional moment function via series regression and test whether it is identically zero using uniform functional inference. Our approach is theoretically justified via a strong Gaussian approximation for statistics of growing dimensions in a general time series setting. We propose a novel bootstrap method in this nonstandard context and show that it significantly outperforms the benchmark asymptotic approximation in finite samples, especially for tail quantiles such as Value-at-Risk (VaR). We use the proposed new test to study the VaR …

An Introduction To Biosimilars For The Treatment Of Retinal Diseases: A Narrative Review, Seenu M Hariprasad, Richard P Gale, Christina Y Weng, Hans C Ebbers, Mourad F Rezk, Ramin Tadayoni

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Biological therapies have revolutionized the treatment of disease across a number of therapeutic areas including retinal diseases. However, on occasion, such treatments may be relatively more expensive compared to small molecule therapies. This can restrict patient access and treatment length leading to suboptimal clinical outcomes. Several biosimilar candidates of ranibizumab and aflibercept are currently in development and the first biosimilar of ranibizumab received EMA approval in August and FDA approval in September 2021. Biosimilars are biological medicines that are highly similar to an already-approved biological medicine (reference product). The physicochemical and clinical similarity of a biosimilar is determined by a …

Influence Of Level 1 And Level 2 Automated Vehicles On Fatal Crashes And Fatal Crash Occurrence, Hardik Gajera, Srinivas S. Pulugurtha, Sonu Mathew

Mineta Transportation Institute

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are expected to improve safety by gradually reducing human decisions while driving. However, there are still questions on their effectiveness as we transition from almost 0% CAVs to 100% CAVs with different levels of vehicle autonomy. This research focuses on synthesizing literature and identifying risk factors influencing fatal crashes involving level 1 and level 2 CAVs in the United States. Fatal crashes involving level 0 vehicles—ones that are not connected and automated—were compared to minimize unobserved heterogeneity and randomness associated with the influencing risk factors. The research team used the fatal crash data for the …

Effect Of Raster Angle On Mechanical Properties Of 3d Printed Short Carbon Fiber Reinforced Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, Skhandesh Srinivasan Ganesh Iyer, Ozgur Keles

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The most common additive manufacturing technique fused filament fabrication (FFF) suffers from inter-bead porosity that reduces mechanical properties. Inter-bead pores follow the raster angle, which causes anisotropic mechanical properties. Yet, the effects of raster angle on the mechanical behavior of short-carbon-fiber-reinforced (SCFR) thermoplastics are unclear. In this study, we performed tensile, flexural, and fracture toughness tests on SCFR acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Raster angles of 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90° were investigated. Tensile strength and elastic modulus decreased by 22–35% for a change from 0° to 15°. Flexural strength and modulus were less sensitive to raster angle. …

Does Judicial Foreclosure Procedure Help Delinquent Subprime Mortgage Borrowers?, Aidong Adam Ding, Shaonan Tian, Yan Yu, Xinlei Zhao Jun 2022

Does Judicial Foreclosure Procedure Help Delinquent Subprime Mortgage Borrowers?, Aidong Adam Ding, Shaonan Tian, Yan Yu, Xinlei Zhao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We conduct comprehensive analyses on whether and how the judicial foreclosure procedure helps subprime mortgage borrowers to reinstate their delinquent loans outside foreclosure liquidation. Even though the transition rates of various exit types are all higher in non-judicial states, we argue such higher rates can be mechanically driven by the faster shrinking pool of delinquent mortgages in non-judicial states over time. Based on the cumulative proportions of various exit types during a period of up to 5 years post the mortgage first become 90 days past due, we find that judicial states offer more opportunities for delinquent borrowers to reinstate …

Parental Mosaicism For Apparent De Novo Genetic Variants: Scope, Detection, And Counseling Challenges, Roni Zemet, Ignatia B Van Den Veyver, Paweł Stankiewicz Jun 2022

Parental Mosaicism For Apparent De Novo Genetic Variants: Scope, Detection, And Counseling Challenges, Roni Zemet, Ignatia B Van Den Veyver, Paweł Stankiewicz

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

The disease burden of de novo mutations (DNMs) has been evidenced only recently when the common application of next-generation sequencing technologies enabled their reliable and affordable detection through family-based clinical exome or genome sequencing. Implementation of exome sequencing into prenatal diagnostics revealed that up to 63% of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants associated with fetal structural anomalies are apparently de novo, primarily for autosomal dominant disorders. Apparent DNMs have been considered to primarily occur as germline or zygotic events, with consequently negligible recurrence risks. However, there is now evidence that a considerable proportion of them are in fact inherited from …

Aldi++: Automatic And Parameter-Less Discord And Outlier Detection For Building Energy Load Profiles, Matias Quintana, Till Stoeckmann, Young June Park, Marian Turowski, Veit Hagenmeyer, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Data-driven building energy prediction is an integral part of the process for measurement and verification, building benchmarking, and building-to-grid interaction. The ASHRAE Great Energy Predictor III (GEPIII) machine learning competition used an extensive meter data set to crowdsource the most accurate machine learning workflow for whole building energy prediction. A significant component of the winning solutions was the pre-processing phase to remove anomalous training data. Contemporary pre-processing methods focus on filtering statistical threshold values or deep learning methods requiring training data and multiple hyper-parameters. A recent method named ALDI (Automated Load profile Discord Identification) managed to identify these discords using …

Low levels of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with an elevated risk of arteriosclerotic coronary heart disease. Heritability of HDL-C levels is high. In this research discovery study, we used whole-exome sequencing to identify damaging gene variants that may play significant roles in determining HDL-C levels. We studied 204 individuals with a mean HDL-C level of 27.8 ± 6.4 mg/dl (range: 4-36 mg/dl). Data were analyzed by statistical gene burden testing and by filtering against candidate gene lists. We found 120 occurrences of probably damaging variants (116 heterozygous; four homozygous) among 45 of 104 recognized HDL candidate genes. Those …

Association Of The Receptor For Activated C-Kinase 1 With Ribosomes In Plasmodium Falciparum, Jessey Erath, Sergej Djuranovic Jun 2022

Association Of The Receptor For Activated C-Kinase 1 With Ribosomes In Plasmodium Falciparum, Jessey Erath, Sergej Djuranovic

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The receptor for activated C-kinase 1 (RACK1), a highly conserved eukaryotic protein, is known to have many varying biological roles and functions. Previous work has established RACK1 as a ribosomal protein, with defined regions important for ribosome binding in eukaryotic cells. In Plasmodium falciparum, RACK1 has been shown to be required for parasite growth, however, conflicting evidence has been presented about RACK1 ribosome binding and its role in mRNA translation. Given the importance of RACK1 as a regulatory component of mRNA translation and ribosome quality control, the case could be made in parasites that RACK1 either binds or does not …

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are hematopoietic stem cell disorders, the pathogenesis of which involves enhanced immune signaling that promotes or selects for mutant hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). In particular, toll-like receptor (TLR) expression and signaling are enhanced in MDS, and their inhibition is an attractive therapeutic strategy. Although prior studies have reported increased expression of TLR2 and its binding partners TLR1 and TLR6 in the CD34

Aberrant activation or suppression of WNT/β-catenin signaling contributes to cancer initiation and progression, neurodegeneration, and bone disease. However, despite great need and more than 40 years of research, targeted therapies for the WNT pathway have yet to be fully realized. Kinases are considered exceptionally druggable and occupy key nodes within the WNT signaling network, but several pathway-relevant kinases remain understudied and "dark." Here, we studied the function of the casein kinase 1γ (CSNK1γ) subfamily of human kinases and their roles in WNT signaling. miniTurbo-based proximity biotinylation and mass spectrometry analysis of CSNK1γ1, CSNK1γ2, and CSNK1γ3 revealed numerous components of the …
