The Role And Immunogenicity Of Cbfa2t3-Glis2 In Pediatric Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia, Elizabeth A. Garfinkle
The Role And Immunogenicity Of Cbfa2t3-Glis2 In Pediatric Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia, Elizabeth A. Garfinkle
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
CBFA2T3-GLIS2 is the most prevalent fusion oncogene in pediatric acute megakaryoblastic leukemia in patients without Down syndrome (non-DS-AMKL) and is associated with an event free survival of only 8% even with high intensity chemotherapy and stem cell transplant in first remission. A cryptic inversion event on chromosome 16 joins the three nervy homology regions (NHR) of CBFA2T3 to the five zinc fingers of GLIS2. This configuration enables the encoded chimeric transcription factor to bind GLIS consensus sequences throughout the genome and recruit transcriptional activators and repressors to alter gene expression and enhance self-renewal capability. Few cooperating mutations have been identified …

This special issue tackles the question of whether and how data shapes private law. The development of new technologies enabled the generation, collection and processing of both personal and non-personal data on an unprecedented scale. The implications
of this phenomenon for private law are threefold. One, how does data affect our understanding of technology regulation in private law relationships? Two, how does data affect the way in which private law is applied? Three, what is the role of data in the design of law from a public policy perspective that transcends doctrinal considerations relating to private law?
Start-Up Firms And Corporate Culture: Evidence From Advertised Corporate Culture, Jungho Lee
Start-Up Firms And Corporate Culture: Evidence From Advertised Corporate Culture, Jungho Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
I document advertised corporate culture among start-up firms from an online job board. Two corporate-culture types emerge, one that concerns the well-being of em- ployees (worker-centered culture) and another that emphasizes other values, such as cus- tomers, firms, and markets (firm-centered culture). The worker-centered culture attracts 20% more applications than the other culture type. Firms advertising the worker-centered culture exploit worker preference by paying 5% lower salaries than measurably similar jobs. Using a standard model of business creation, I show financially constrained start- ups are incentivized to advocate popular culture, even though doing so is not optimal without financial constraints.

Identifying the sensitivity of future power systems to climate extremes must consider the concurrent effects of changing climate and evolving power systems. We investigated the sensitivity of a Western U.S. power system to isolated and combined heat and drought when it has low (5%) and moderate (31%) variable renewable energy shares, representing historic and future systems. We used an electricity operational model combined with a model of historically extreme drought (for hydropower and freshwater-reliant thermoelectric generators) over the Western U.S. and a synthetic, regionally extreme heat event in Southern California (for thermoelectric generators and electricity load). We found that the …

Do Large Gains Make Willing Sellers?, Dong Hong, Roger Loh, Mitch Warachka
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Using unique real estate data that allow for accurately-measured capital gains, we examine whether sell propensities depend on the magnitude of a seller's capital gain. We find that short-term sell propensities are flat over losses and increasing in gains. Consistent with their higher sell propensities, selling prices are lower for properties with larger gains. Large-sized short-term stock investments also have sell propensities that are flat over losses and increasing in gains, although the sell propensities of typical-sized short-term stock investments are V-shaped (Ben-David and Hirshleifer (2012)). Our findings provide empirical support for the realization utility theories of Barberis and Xiong …

Nations can build and rebuild degraded soils to help address climate change and potentially improve the nutritional content of food if we change policies that allow the addition of safe mineral and organic wastes to soil. We present a framework that facilitates the transition from intensive conventional to more regenerative farming practices by considering soil’s natural cycle. Our paper is presented in three parts. Firstly, we consider that ’soil is living’; just like humans, the soil biome needs a balanced diet of macro and micronutrients as well as a nurturing environment. We simplify the soil science and take a systems …
Decarceration With Decarbonization: Renewable Rikers And The Transition To Clean Power, Rebecca Bratspies
Decarceration With Decarbonization: Renewable Rikers And The Transition To Clean Power, Rebecca Bratspies
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
This Article offers New York City’s Renewable Rikers project as an example of how this might be done, and how communities might combine decarbonization with decarceration in order to build a more just and sustainable society. By putting racial justice and overburdened communities at the center of building a clean energy grid, Renewable Rikers offers a model for genuine and transformative change that confronts root causes of inequality and builds a better, fairer city. It does so by tying electrification and land use decisions to equity concerns, and by facilitating meaningful community involvement in these infrastructure decisions. In this fashion, …

Hydropower's Promise: The Opportunities And Challenges Of Hydropower For Mitigating Climate-Driven Scarcity, Lauren Perkins, Sylwia Dakowicz, Ellen Hill, Peter Kissel, Sean Neal
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
This Article examines hydroelectric resources’ ability to assist states throughout the West and across the country in meeting their statutory and policy goals of reduced or zero carbon emissions, while maintaining reliability. Extreme weather events, and associated costs, are not isolated to the Western Interconnection, but rather increasingly impact other regions and their end-use customers. In its 2021 U.S. Hydropower Market Report, the Department of Energy (DOE) noted that, in nearly every Balancing Authority Area assessed, hydropower was more extensively used for hourly ramping flexibility than any other resource. Additional services hydroelectric resources provide, including storage capacity and black start …

How Virtual Powers Plants Can Advance Electrification And Mitigate Infrastructure Needs As We Race To Meet Our Climate Challenges, Kevin B. Jones Phd, Mary Franco, Kim Mashke, Sarah A. Pardee
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
This paper explores three contemporary case studies of how distributed energy resources have been aggregated into Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) to provide resilient, low carbon solutions for our climate challenge in a manner that can mitigate demands on our energy infrastructure. These recent case studies will analyze distributed energy resources and how they can be aggregated to participate in wholesale electric markets to reduce the demand for larger utility scale resources while also providing grid services locally. These case studies build on previous research on distributed energy resources we have performed at our Institute for Energy and the Environment. The …
Fact Or Doctrine? Inconsistencies In The Application Of The Dormant Commerce Clause's Extraterritoriality Principle To Challenges To State Climate Change Prevention Policies, Kelsey Gagnon
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
The “dormant” Commerce Clause’s prohibition on extraterritorial regulation has tested state efforts to battle greenhouse gas-induced climate change using clean energy policies. This is partly due to the structure of the North American power grid. Simply put, the electricity generated by an in-state power facility might be consumed by any other state connected to that same interconnection during normal operations. This cross-border flow, sale, and consumption of electricity places the grid within the regulatory grasp of the United States Constitution’s Commerce Clause. Congress therefore has authority to regulate the interstate electricity market. The Supreme Court has also interpreted an implicit …

Nevada's Energy Choice Initiative: A Case Study Of Deregulation, The Dormant Commerce Clause, And Energy Federalism, Joel A. Kaufmann
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
The fight over “Energy Choice” or “retail electricity market deregulation” in Nevada demonstrated a disagreement about how to structure electricity markets, economic consequences in the billions of dollars, and thorny legal doctrines like the Dormant Commerce Clause and dual sovereignty. The Energy Choice Initiative was the first attempt to deregulate a state’s retail electricity market by ballot initiative and the first include a right to “Energy Choice.” The Energy Choice Initiative is one example of the growing interest in retail customer choice or “Energy Choice” across the country. In the past two years, Virginia and Arizona considered retail customer choice …

Behind The Concrete Curtain: Acknowledging And Curbing Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Hydroelectric Facilities And River Impoundments, Joseph A. Welsh
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
From its early use as kinetic power to kick start the industrial revolution, a consensus emerged that hydroelectric power is clean, renewable, and reliable. In contemporary parlance it is universally classified as either “carbon free” or “low-carbon.” The history of hydropower in the United States supports this belief, and its use has rarely been scrutinized. However, an emerging consensus indicates scrutiny is necessary (for hydroelectric power and other energy sources avoiding acute assessment) given the challenges foisted upon us by anthropogenic climate change.
This Article will put the standard hydropower consensus to task and analyze whether it holds water as …

A Cross-Country Investigation Of Social Image Motivation And Acceptance Of Lab-Grown Meat In Singapore And The United States, Mark Chong, Angela K. Y. Leung, Verity Lua
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This research has three goals. First, it sets out to compare consumer acceptance of lab-grown meat in the U.S. and in Singapore. Second, it seeks to explain the difference in Americans' and Singaporeans' acceptance of lab-grown meat by examining their eating motivations. Specifically, we focused on social image motivations – the motivations to present oneself positively in social contexts. Third, this study also aims to assess if exposure to information about lab-grown meat communicated by celebrity versus expert social media influencers (SMIs) can impact people's acceptance of lab-grown meat products. Our analysis showed that Singaporean participants had greater acceptance of …

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Outbreaks of histomonosis in turkeys are typically initiated by the ingestion of contaminated embryonated eggs of Heterakis gallinarum, potentially present in earthworms and mechanical vectors. Once an outbreak is started, infected turkeys can transmit the disease by horizontal transmission. Factors influencing horizontal transmission of histomonosis are poorly understood. Replication of horizontal transmission in experimental conditions has not been consistent, presenting an obstacle in searching for alternatives to prevent or treat the disease. Two pilot experiments and three validation experiments were conducted in the present study. In pilot experiment 1, one isolate of Histomonas meleagridis (named Buford) was used. Turkeys …

Narrating Agricultural Resilience After Hurricane María: How Smallholder Farmers In Puerto Rico Leverage Self-Sufficiency And Collaborative Agency In A Climate-Vulnerable Food System, Abrania Marrero, Andrea Lόpez-Cepero, Ramón Borges-Méndez, Josiemer Mattei
Sustainability and Social Justice
Climate change is a threat to food system stability, with small islands particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events. In Puerto Rico, a diminished agricultural sector and resulting food import dependence have been implicated in reduced diet quality, rural impoverishment, and periodic food insecurity during natural disasters. In contrast, smallholder farmers in Puerto Rico serve as cultural emblems of self-sufficient food production, providing fresh foods to local communities in an informal economy and leveraging traditional knowledge systems to manage varying ecological and climatic constraints. The current mixed methods study sought to document this expertise and employed a questionnaire and narrative interviewing …

Examining How Early Career Teachers’ Experiences In Gvsu Schools Inform Future Plans, Kiel Mcqueen, Grand Valley State University
Charter School Research Reports
Studies have suggested that between 20 to 40 percent of teachers leave the profession in their first five years (Darling-Hammond & Sykes, 2003; Gray & Taie, 2015; Ingersoll 2003). Turnover tends to be higher in urban districts and schools serving students from historically marginalized communities. Increased teacher turnover is particularly problematic given the growing evidence that attrition harms schools, teachers, and students (Boyd, Lankford, Loeb, & Wyckoff, 2005; Ronfeldt, Loeb, and Wyckoff, 2013). The pandemic could intensify this problem given that the number of teachers reporting frequent job-related stress, symptoms of depression, and interest in careers outside of education have …

Consensus Embedding For Multiple Networks: Computation And Applications, Mengzhen Li, Mehmet Koyutürk
Faculty Scholarship
Machine learning applications on large-scale network-structured data commonly encode network information in the form of node embeddings. Network embedding algorithms map the nodes into a low-dimensional space such that the nodes that are “similar” with respect to network topology are also close to each other in the embedding space. Real-world networks often have multiple versions or can be “multiplex” with multiple types of edges with different semantics. For such networks, computation of Consensus Embeddings based on the node embeddings of individual versions can be useful for various reasons, including privacy, efficiency, and effectiveness of analyses. Here, we systematically investigate the …

Next-generation sequencing is a prevalent diagnostic tool for undiagnosed diseases and has played a significant role in rare disease gene discovery. While this technology resolves some cases, others are given a list of possibly damaging genetic variants necessitating functional studies. Productive collaborations between scientists, clinicians, and patients (affected individuals) can help resolve such medical mysteries, and provide insights into in vivo function of human genes. Furthermore, facilitating interactions between scientists and research funders, including non-profit organizations or commercial entities, can dramatically reduce the time to translate discoveries from bench to bedside. Several systems designed to connect clinicians and researchers with …

A Consistent Specification Test For Dynamic Quantile Models, Peter Horvath, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Andrew J. Patton
Research Collection School Of Economics
Correct specification of a conditional quantile model implies that a particular conditional moment is equal to zero. We nonparametrically estimate the conditional moment function via series regression and test whether it is identically zero using uniform functional inference. Our approach is theoretically justified via a strong Gaussian approximation for statistics of growing dimensions in a general time series setting. We propose a novel bootstrap method in this nonstandard context and show that it significantly outperforms the benchmark asymptotic approximation in finite samples, especially for tail quantiles such as Value-at-Risk (VaR). We use the proposed new test to study the VaR …
