The outbreak of the Global Pandemic Covid-19 that spread terribly across various countries from the end of 2019, has severely altered people’s life and economy. Various reports across papers and news articles on how each government was managing the costs of vaccines, medical equipment, and necessities. The world saw shifts in stock markets, unemployment, the tourism industry completely coming to a standstill, and more. Has this Covid Pandemic which played a crucial role within geographical boundaries altered the financial transactions across countries on a higher level? With the help of the statistics available with the Bank of International Settlements, this …

Biophysical Mechanisms Of Cell-Substrate Interactions Over Porous Membranes, Zahra Allahyari Jun 2022

Biophysical Mechanisms Of Cell-Substrate Interactions Over Porous Membranes, Zahra Allahyari

Theses

There is an increasing interest in the development of microphysiological systems due to their applications in drug discoveries and development of therapeutic strategies. Porous membranes are major components of these in vitro biological systems. The interest in using porous membranes, especially ultrathin ones, stems from their capabilities in providing physiologically relevant tissue interfaces and cell-cell communication between the co-cultured cells. Despite the wide applications of these membranes in biomimetic platforms, their role in modulating different cellular behaviors and the enabling mechanism for these effects are not fully understood. It has been previously shown that porous membranes generally weaken cell-substrate interaction. …

The Inner Dialogue Of Cultures: "Core-To-Core Confrontation" In My Name Is Asher Lev And Davita's Harp, Sara Marie Williams Jun 2022

The Inner Dialogue Of Cultures: "Core-To-Core Confrontation" In My Name Is Asher Lev And Davita's Harp, Sara Marie Williams

Masters Theses

Chaim Potok’s novels My Name is Asher Lev and Davita’s Harp offer an immersion into an otherwise private culture. They are doorways of sorts into the twentieth century Jewish community in America, full of complex history and a necessary resilience developed after centuries of oppression. These two novels are examples of what Potok calls “core-to-core confrontation,” as his main characters experience tension between cultural expectations and their desires which appear to contradict those standards. Davita and Asher live in the complex reality of community, demonstrating that it is natural to desire various outlets of expression and still be a unified …

Stumbling In The Dark? 4 Lenses To Illuminate Your Organization, Angela Rice, Roriebeth Fredrich

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using the lenses of structural, systems, cultural, and political theory-based metaphors, a team of academic library leaders made informed and strategic decisions targeted at improving specific aspects of their organization. This resulted in improvements to the culture and structure of the organization as well as a better understanding of the political and systems influences at play. The lenses will be presented visually through illustrative metaphors such as through eyeglasses with a jungle in focus and described as applicable for most library organizations.

Identification Of Sexual Grooming Behaviors In Male And Female Perpetrators, Stephanie Mignogna Jun 2022

Identification Of Sexual Grooming Behaviors In Male And Female Perpetrators, Stephanie Mignogna

Student Theses

It is estimated up to 12% of all sexual abuse is perpetrated by females. However, little is known regarding the tactics that women use to perpetuate the abuse. There is evidence that almost all cases of child sexual abuse involve grooming and that female perpetrators may also engage in sexual grooming to perpetrate the abuse. Identification of sexual grooming behaviors can prevent abuse before it occurs however, previous research has found that individuals are poor at identifying sexual grooming behaviors before they occur. Using an experimental vignette design, this study compared the ability to identify sexual grooming behaviors when the …

Weak Identification Of Long Memory With Implications For Inference, Peter C. B. Phillips Jun 2022

Weak Identification Of Long Memory With Implications For Inference, Peter C. B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper explores weak identification issues arising in commonly used models of
economic and financial time series. Two highly popular configurations are shown to
be asymptotically observationally equivalent: one with long memory and weak autoregressive dynamics, the other with antipersistent shocks and a near-unit autoregressive
root. We develop a data-driven semiparametric and identification-robust approach to
inference that reveals such ambiguities and documents the prevalence of weak identification in many realized volatility and trading volume series. The identification-robust empirical evidence generally favors long memory dynamics in volatility and volume, a conclusion that is corroborated using social-media news flow data.

Prudential Policy With Distorted Beliefs, Eduardo Dávila, Ansgar Walther Jun 2022

Prudential Policy With Distorted Beliefs, Eduardo Dávila, Ansgar Walther

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies leverage regulation when equity investors and/or creditors have distorted beliefs relative to a planner. We characterize how the optimal regulation responds to arbitrary changes in investors’/creditors’ beliefs, relating our results to practical scenarios. We show that the optimal regulation depends on the type and magnitude of such changes. Optimism by investors calls for looser leverage regulation, while optimism by creditors, or jointly by both investors/creditors, calls for tighter leverage regulation. Our results apply to environments with i) planners with imperfect knowledge of investors’/creditors’ beliefs, ii) monetary policy, iii) bailouts and pecuniary externalities, and iv) endogenous beliefs.

Victims As Instruments, Rachel J. Wechsler Jun 2022

Victims As Instruments, Rachel J. Wechsler

Faculty Publications

Crime victims are often instrumentalized within the criminal legal process in furtherance of state prosecutorial interests. This is a particularly salient issue concerning victims of gender-based violence (GBV) because victim testimony is typically considered essential for successful prosecution of these types of crimes. Since the U.S. Supreme Court's 2004 decision in Crawford v. Washington, courts require declarants to be available for cross-examination on "testimonial" hearsay evidence. Consequently, criminal legal actors are further incentivized to employ highly coercive practices aimed at securing GBV victims' participation in the criminal legal process as evidentiary tools. These practices include arresting and incarcerating victims through …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

Friedman's curve, despite acknowledged limitations, has greatly influenced labour management. Interventions to hasten birth are now ubiquitous, challenging the contemporary study of normal labour. Our primary purpose was to characterise normal active labour and pushing durations in a large, contemporary sample experiencing minimal intervention, stratified by parity, age, and body mass index (BMI).

Methods

This is a secondary analysis of the national, validated Midwives Alliance of North America 4·0 (MANA Stats) data registry (n = 75,243), prospectively collected between Jan 1, 2012 and Dec 31, 2018 to describe labour and birth in home and birth center settings where …

International Cross-Media Adaptation: A Case Study Of The Witcher, Alexa Schmidt Jun 2022

International Cross-Media Adaptation: A Case Study Of The Witcher, Alexa Schmidt

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

As consumer media habits further diverge with the introduction of new technologies and social spaces, literature has increasingly been adapted in new mediums. Adaptations of written works have the exposure and visual appeal to draw in a larger audience than the pages of the original would.

This research question is extremely relevant to the shift the industry has made with the introduction of new technologies for cross-media storytelling through video games, film and television. Increasingly, publishers, like Level 4 Press, look for stories that will translate well into a TV series or movie, and cross-media stories and adaptations have been …

Lessons Of The Past And The Humanitarian Outreach Of Poland To Ukrainian Refugees, Karin Mika Jun 2022

Lessons Of The Past And The Humanitarian Outreach Of Poland To Ukrainian Refugees, Karin Mika

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The reaction of Poland and its people is a refreshing departure from the historic blood rivalries of the past. This is similarly true of both Romania and Hungary; however, it is Poland that has absorbed the majority of Ukrainian refugees and Poland that has the most historically contentious relationship with Ukraine. Poland’s current humanitarian efforts with respect to its Ukrainian neighbors is evidence that some lessons have been learned from the past. Perhaps there is hope that some of the centuries old blood feuding can come to an end and countries can better work toward cooperative relationships in the future.

Lookalike Targeting On Others' Journeys: Brand Versus Performance Marketing, K. Sudhir, Seung Yoon Lee, Subroto Roy Jun 2022

Lookalike Targeting On Others' Journeys: Brand Versus Performance Marketing, K. Sudhir, Seung Yoon Lee, Subroto Roy

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Lookalike targeting is a widely used model-based ad targeting approach that uses a seed database of individuals to identify matching “lookalikes” for targeted customer acquisition. An advertiser has to make two key choices: (1) who to seed on and (2) seed-match rank range. First, we find that seeding on others’ journey stage can be effective in new customer acquisition; despite the cold start nature of customer acquisition using Lookalike audiences, third parties can indeed identify factors unobserved to the advertiser that move individuals along the journey and can be correlated with the lookalikes. Further, while journey-based seeding adds no incremental …

Econometric Analysis Of Asset Price Bubbles, Shuping Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips Jun 2022

Econometric Analysis Of Asset Price Bubbles, Shuping Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In the presence of bubbles, asset prices consist of a fundamental and a bubble component, with the bubble component following an explosive dynamic. The general idea for bubble identification is to apply explosive root tests to a proxy of the unobservable bubble. Three notable proxies are the real asset prices, log price-payoff ratios, and estimated non-fundamental components. The rationale for all three proxy choices rests on the definition of bubbles, which has been presented in various forms in the literature. This chapter provides a theoretical framework that incorporates several definitions of bubbles (and fundamentals) and offers guidance for selecting proxies. …

Why The Feldstein-Horioka “Puzzle” Remains Unsolved, Jesus Felipe, Scott Fullwiler, Al-Habbyel Yusoph Jun 2022

Why The Feldstein-Horioka “Puzzle” Remains Unsolved, Jesus Felipe, Scott Fullwiler, Al-Habbyel Yusoph

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

This paper argues that the 40-year-old Feldstein-Horioka “puzzle” (i.e., in a regression of the domestic investment rate on the domestic saving rate, the estimated coefficient is significantly larger than expected in a world with high capital mobility) should have never been labeled as such. First, we show that the series of investments and savings typically used in empirical exercises to test the FeldsteinHorioka thesis are not appropriate for testing capital mobility. Second, and complementary to the first point, we show that the Feldstein-Horioka regression is not a model in the econometric sense, that is, an equation with a proper error …

Feasibility Study On Novel Fire-Resistant Coating Materials, Anyou Zhu, Hanli Wu, Jenny Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the last few decades, wildfires in the United States have caused severe damage and property losses. As more houses are being built in areas prone to wildfire, enhancing the fire resistance of structures and buildings is critical and in great need. This paper presents a preliminary study to explore and develop some innovative surface-bonded fire-resistant coating materials for this purpose. The feasibility of these materials [i.e., high performance cement mortar (HPCM), geopolymer mortar (GPM), and magnesium phosphate cement mortar (MPCM)] was assessed considering the workability, adhesion to structure surface, and fire property. The Taguchi-based mix designs of HPCM, GPM, …

Effects Of Instructor Accent On Undergraduate Evaluations And Learning At A Catholic College, Aubrey Scheopner Torres, Kevin Doran, Chih-Chien Huang, Elizabeth Rickenbach Jun 2022

Effects Of Instructor Accent On Undergraduate Evaluations And Learning At A Catholic College, Aubrey Scheopner Torres, Kevin Doran, Chih-Chien Huang, Elizabeth Rickenbach

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic institutions of higher education are called to form citizens who fight against injustice, including persistent racial oppression. To do this, Catholic, public, and other private institutions must provide students opportunities to learn about and confront racism (Johnston, 2014). It is important that these institutions confront these issues because they employ faculty and staff who may experience systemic racism and can provide cultural knowledge to aid deconstructing racist ideologies. Undergraduate student evaluations of instructors or faculty, however, indicate discrimination against those perceived as non-white and with non-native English accents. This study focuses on one form of racism at a Catholic …

Feasibility Report On Water Recycling And The Housing Crisis, Tally A. Perry Jun 2022

Feasibility Report On Water Recycling And The Housing Crisis, Tally A. Perry

City and Regional Planning

The western United States is experiencing increasing population, a housing shortage, and a drought. These challenges demand creative and unprecedented changes to development. Water recycling is slowly emerging as a viable solution for developers, home owners, and cities as a way to continue much-needed housing development while mitigating unnecessary water depletion. With all change, policy, feasibility, and awareness can be the largest influencers. Drought-ridden western-American states require additional and revised regulatory requirements to promote recycled water in new development. Currently, water reuse is largely used for agricultural and industrial purposes. To motivate and encourage housing development, water recycling needs to …

Equilibrium And Dynamic Surface Tension Behavior In Colloidal Unimolecular Polymers (Cup), Ashish Zore, Peng Geng, Michael R. Van De Mark

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studies of the interfacial behavior of pure aqueous nanoparticles have been limited due tothe difficulty of making contaminant-free nanoparticles while also providing narrow size distribu-tion. Colloidal unimolecular polymers (CUPs) are a new type of single-chain nanoparticle with a particle size ranging from 3 to 9 nm, which can be produced free of surfactants and volatile organic contents (VOCs). CUP particles of different sizes and surface charges were made. The surface tension behavior of these CUP particles in water was studied using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer. The equilibrium surface tension decreased with increasing concentration and the number of charges present …

Community Violence Intervention At The Roots (Cvi–R), Katheryne Pugliese, Paul Oder, Talib Hudson, Jeffrey A. Butts

Publications and Research

The crime and justice field recently started to label a wide array of violence prevention strategies as Community Violence Interventions. Many of these strategies depend on law enforcement and social services, but the most innovative approaches are community-centered and community-sourced. They are grassroots efforts that rely on the resources of neighborhoods and residents themselves, operating separately from law enforcement and traditional human services. Researchers from the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center reviewed the history of community violence intervention strategies that operate at the grassroots level (or CVI-R) and examined evaluations of several community-centered approaches, providing recommendations for researchers …

Burkholderia glumae is one of the most critical rice-pathogenic bacteria, and it causes bacterial panicle blight (BPB) in rice plants. In 2017, BPB symptoms were observed from rice fields in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand. Sixty-one isolates obtained from the symptomatic panicles of rice were initially identified as B. glumae by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using species-specific primers. Among them, six selected strains isolated from the susceptible japonica rice cultivar DOA2 were characterized in terms of morpho-physiology, pathology, phylogenetics, and genomics. Our genome sequence analysis of the six selected strains revealed the presence of multiple prophages, which may reflect the high …
