Reconceptualizing The Hyporheic Zone For Nonperennial Rivers And Streams, Kendra E. Kaiser Jun 2022

Reconceptualizing The Hyporheic Zone For Nonperennial Rivers And Streams, Kendra E. Kaiser

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nonperennial streams dominate global river networks and are increasing in occurrence across space and time. When surface flow ceases or the surface water dries, flow or moisture can be retained in the subsurface sediments of the hyporheic zone, supporting aquatic communities and ecosystem processes. However, hydrological and ecological definitions of the hyporheic zone have been developed in perennial rivers and emphasize the mixing of water and organisms from both the surface stream and groundwater. The adaptation of such definitions to include both humid and dry unsaturated conditions could promote characterization of how hydrological and biogeochemical variability shape ecological communities within …

A Measurement Model Of The Dimensions And Types Of Informal Organizational Control: An Empirical Test In A B2b Sales Context, Stacey L. Malek, Shikhar Sarin, Bernard J. Jaworski Jun 2022

A Measurement Model Of The Dimensions And Types Of Informal Organizational Control: An Empirical Test In A B2b Sales Context, Stacey L. Malek, Shikhar Sarin, Bernard J. Jaworski

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sales organizations are replete with informal forms of organizational control. Despite this, marketing and management literature has primarily focused on the theoretical development and empirical testing of formal, managerial forms of control. One reason research on informal controls has lagged is a lack of comprehensive measurement scales. Specifically, existing measures of the three principal types of informal controls—self, social, and cultural—do not capture the full dimensionality of the constructs (i.e., information, reward, and punishment aspects of informal controls). The authors take steps to remedy this situation by (1) outlining nine distinct dimensional types of informal control based on organizational control …

Stress And Resilience Among Resettling Refugee Youth: An Illustrative Review And New Applications For The Family Stress Model, April S. Masarik, Hailey Fritz, Vanja Lazarevic Jun 2022

Stress And Resilience Among Resettling Refugee Youth: An Illustrative Review And New Applications For The Family Stress Model, April S. Masarik, Hailey Fritz, Vanja Lazarevic

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Some of the world's 84 million forcibly displaced persons (approximately half are youth under the age of 18) obtain legal refugee status, which allows them passage to resettle in new communities. Although much has been documented about experiences of stress and trauma among refugees, we know less about their resilience and coping abilities. Furthermore, a lack of an overarching theoretical framework hinders our understanding of the complete refugee experience, which includes stressors, but also significant strengths and resources. In this paper, we offer a unified conceptual model inspired by family stress, ecological systems, and resilience science that outlines hypothesized stress …

"This Is Your Team": Examining A Sense Of Belonging Among Transracial International Adoptees, Sheera Tamura Jun 2022

"This Is Your Team": Examining A Sense Of Belonging Among Transracial International Adoptees, Sheera Tamura

Anthropology, Sociology, & Social Work Undergraduate Honors Theses

It has been argued that developing a sense of belonging is a unique process for transracial international adoptees. This qualitative study examines how three transracial international adoptees (N=3) experience a sense of belonging within themselves, their family environments, and their communities. Each participant was thoroughly interviewed about their adoptive experiences and how they find a sense of belonging within their adoptive identities. Once all of the interviews were completed, the interview transcripts underwent a thematic analysis process in which four unique themes emerged. Although there were notable differences in how each adoptee acknowledges a sense of belonging, there were also …

Vision And Hearing Loss Associated With Lifetime Drug Use: Nhanes 2013–2018, Amanda M. Hinson-Enslin, Ramzi W. Nahhas, Heather F. Mcclintock

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: One in four American adults has a disability. Individuals with disabilities are more likely to have mental health issues and use substances and are less likely to attend substance use rehabilitation compared to individuals without disabilities. However, most research about substance use and substance use rehabilitation does not focus specifically on sensory disabilities. Objective: The purpose was to test the association between vision and/or hearing loss, lifetime drug use, and lifetime drug rehabilitation. Methods: Data files from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles (2013–2014, 2015–2016, 2017–2018) were combined. Ordinal logistic regression was used to test the association between …

An Unusual Presentation Of Immunoglobulin G4-Related Disease (Igg4-Rd) Causing Subglottic Stenosis, Prakash Nallani, Weixia Guo, Ross M. Mayerhoff, Alireza Meysami

Rheumatology Articles

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition that is known to involve multiple organs and was first described as an entity in 2003. It is characterized by lesions with a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, IgG4-positive plasma cells, storiform fibrosis, and frequently elevated serum IgG4 levels. Organs that are commonly involved include the pancreas, biliary tree, salivary glands, periorbital tissues, kidneys, retroperitoneum, lungs, pleura, thyroid, aorta, and lymph nodes. Rarer manifestations of IgG4-RD include central nervous system (CNS) involvement, prostatitis, mastitis, midline destructive disease, and nasopharyngeal disease. In this report, we discuss an atypical case of a young woman with …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Obesity is an increasingly alarming public health threat, with nearly 20% of children classified as obese in the United States today. Children with obesity are commonly prescribed the opioids fentanyl and methadone, and accurate dosing is critical to reducing the risk of serious adverse events associated with overexposure. However, pharmacokinetic studies in children with obesity are challenging to conduct, so there is limited information to guide fentanyl and methadone dosing in these children. To address this clinical knowledge gap, physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models of fentanyl and methadone were developed in adults and scaled to children with and without obesity to explore …

Oliguria On The Day Of Intubation Is Associated With Mortality In Patients With Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Raef A. Fadel, Ivanna O. Murskyj, Elian D. Abou Asala, Nour Nasiri, Ayman Alsaadi, Ashley Scott, Daniel R. Ouellette

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Articles

To investigate the relationship between oliguric acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.

SETTING: This investigation took place at a single-center, tertiary referral multidisciplinary comprehensive healthcare hospital in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan.

PATIENTS: Adult patients 18 years old or older hospitalized in the ICU and diagnosed with ARDS on mechanical ventilation.

INTERVENTIONS: None.

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Three hundred eight patients were included in the final analysis. Risk factors associated with mortality included advanced age (p < 0.001), increased body mass index (p = 0.008), and a history of chronic kidney disease (p = 0.023). Presence of AKI by day 1 of intubation, with elevated creatinine (p = 0.003) and oliguria (p < 0.001), was significantly associated with mortality. On multivariate analysis, advanced age (relative risk [RR], 1.02), urine output on the day of intubation (RR, 0.388), bicarbonate level (RR, 0.948), and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment severity score (RR, 1.09) were independently associated with mortality. A receiver operating characteristic curve identified a threshold urine output on the day of intubation of 0.7 mL/kg/hr (area under the curve, 0.75; p < 0.001) as most closely associated with inpatient mortality (i.e., urine output < 0.7 mL/kg/hr is associated with mortality).

CONCLUSIONS: For patients with ARDS, oliguria on the day of intubation was independently associated …

A Way Forward In The Covid-19 Pandemic: Making The Case For Narrative Competence In Pulmonary And Critical Care Medicine, Rana Awdish, Margaret M. Hayes, Avraham Z. Cooper, Megan M. Hosey, Alison Trainor, Rosemary Weatherston, M. Elizabeth Wilcox

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Articles

Each surge of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic presented new challenges to pulmonary and critical care practitioners. Although some of the initial challenges were somewhat less acute, clinicians now are left to face the physical, emotional, and mental toll of the past 2 years. The pandemic revealed a need for a more varied skillset, including space for reflection, tolerance of uncertainty, and humanism. These skills can assist clinicians who are left to heal from the difficulty of caring for patients in the absence of families who were excluded from the intensive care unit, public distrust of vaccines, and morgues overtaken …

Development And Application Of A 1d Compaction Model To Understand 65 Years Of Subsidence In The San Joaquin Valley, Matthew Lees, Rosemary Knight, Ryan G. Smith

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High rates of land subsidence, caused by groundwater overdraft, are resulting in millions of dollars of infrastructure damage in California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV). In recent years, the use of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has enabled us to substantially improve our understanding of this subsidence. However, only very occasionally have the InSAR data been integrated with a physical model of subsurface compaction. Here, we have used InSAR and other data to parameterize and calibrate a 1D compaction model. We applied our model to a study area in the SJV where we had access to the necessary information on hydraulic …

Fighting Global Surveillance: Lessons From The American Muslim Community, Danna Z. Elmasry Jun 2022

Fighting Global Surveillance: Lessons From The American Muslim Community, Danna Z. Elmasry

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The United States government has been spying on its citizens through a massive surveillance infrastructure that is unrestricted to a particular target or suspicion of wrongdoing. The statutory and regulatory authorities responsible for this infrastructure are sprawling and often secret. Built-in limitations and oversight mechanisms are riddled with loopholes or inaccessible due to exceedingly high thresholds. Litigation challenges to surveillance overreach often fail at standing. Under the current doctrine, plaintiffs must show that their own communications have been surveilled by a specific surveillance program. This Note contributes to surveillance reform by proposing a private right of action that sets the …

Suspect Development Systems: Databasing Marginality And Enforcing Discipline, Rashida Richardson, Amba Kak Jun 2022

Suspect Development Systems: Databasing Marginality And Enforcing Discipline, Rashida Richardson, Amba Kak

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Algorithmic accountability law—focused on the regulation of data-driven systems like artificial intelligence (AI) or automated decision-making (ADM) tools—is the subject of lively policy debates, heated advocacy, and mainstream media attention. Concerns have moved beyond data protection and individual due process to encompass a broader range of group-level harms such as discrimination and modes of democratic participation. While a welcome and long overdue shift, the current discourse ignores systems like databases, which are viewed as technically “rudimentary” and often siloed from regulatory scrutiny and public attention. Additionally, burgeoning regulatory proposals like algorithmic impact assessments are not structured to surface important –yet …

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

In this work, synthesis of titanium thin films on two different substrates (glass and n-type Si), with thicknesses of 90 and 145 nm at two different times (5 and 10 min) respectively, has been obtained. The thin films have been successfully deposited on glass and silicon substrates using DC diode sputtering technique. The optical properties of the prepared thin films have been checked out using the optical reflectance spectrum. A significant reduction in surface reflectivity was observed at (10 min) sputtering time. The structural properties of the prepared thin films were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron …

The planned environment will be revised and accurately assessed to provide safety, flexibility, and proper use of the circulation route in place. The community’s …

The Tragedy Of The Commons: A Podcast Exploring Solutions To The Housing Crisis In California, Delaney Li-Ming Faherty Jun 2022

The Tragedy Of The Commons: A Podcast Exploring Solutions To The Housing Crisis In California, Delaney Li-Ming Faherty

City and Regional Planning

Affordable housing has become increasingly inaccessible across the United States, particularly in California. Because of its long history and far-reaching span, California’s housing crisis is a complexity that affects individuals at most income levels. Accordingly, opinions on solving the crisis vary among each public.

A popular solution is increasing the amount and scale of housing, however, barriers, such as single-family zoning, exist at the state and local level. While statewide legislation is working to counteract municipal zoning codes, local opposition is rampant. Because of this pushback, and the slow pace at which housing reliant on individual action is built, today’s …
