Prevalence Of Duesenberry’S Relative Income Hypothesis In Nepalese Economy, Rajendra Adhikari Jun 2022

Prevalence Of Duesenberry’S Relative Income Hypothesis In Nepalese Economy, Rajendra Adhikari

International Review of Business and Economics

Present paper examines the prevalence of Duesenberry’s relative income hypothesis in Nepalese economy during 1974/75-2019/20 through ARDL bound tests under DEF and Davis-SK specifications. The ARDL under DEF specification is found to be not valid. However, the ARDL bound test under Davis-SK specification is found valid. There exists cointegration among average propensity to consume, demonstration effect and ratchet effect. The coefficient of demonstration effect is found to be negative and that of ratchet effect to be positive as reported by ARDL models. The error correction model also implies that short run shocks significantly affect long run relations among the variables. …

Memory Protection With Dynamic Authentication Trees, Matthew T. Millar, Marcin Łukowiak, Stanisław Radziszowski

Presentations and other scholarship

As embedded devices increase in use and handle more critical information and functionalities, the importance of security grows even greater. Defense against bus attacks such as spoofing, splicing, and replay attacks is of particular concern. Traditional memory authentication techniques, such as hashes and message authentication codes, require significant amounts of on-chip memory and introduce a large performance impact when protecting off-chip memory during run-time. Balanced authentication trees such as the well-known Merkle tree or TEC-Tree can be used to reduce this cost. This work proposes a new method of dynamic authentication trees, which updates a tree structure based on a …

Contractual Evolution, Matthew Jennejohn, Julian Nyarko, Eric L. Talley Jun 2022

Contractual Evolution, Matthew Jennejohn, Julian Nyarko, Eric L. Talley

University of Chicago Law Review

Conventional wisdom portrays contracts as static distillations of parties’ shared intent at some discrete point in time. In reality, however, contract terms evolve in response to their environments, including new laws, legal interpretations, and economic shocks. While several legal scholars have offered stylized accounts of this evolutionary process, we still lack a coherent, general theory that broadly captures the dynamics of real-world contracting practice. This paper advances such a theory, in which the evolution of contract terms is a byproduct of several key features, including efficiency concerns, information, and sequential learning by attorneys who negotiate several deals over time. Each …

Tools For Salvation, Sahmyja Jones

XULAneXUS

Poverty and oppression are elements of society that have persisted through different vehicles of power and dominance. In the contemporary situation, we suffer from forms of hierarchy that are not wholly new, as we exist in a global society that utilizes classical theological frameworks that perpetuate the subjugation of certain groups of people. Theologians have crafted theories and concepts to address these conditions, however, these concepts seem incomplete or contradictory in completing the task on their own. By combining some of these frameworks with concepts from critical theorists, we can generate stronger and more holistic models that address the conditions …

Researchers and educators have identified an urgent need for more rigorous teaching and learning about epidemiology topics and practices, such as engaging in behaviors that prevent the spread of viral disease such as COVID-19. Responding to this need, we designed a virtual epidemic as a special event hosted in a virtual world. In this paper we share the strategic, tactical, and detailed design of the SPIKEY-20 virtual epidemic and data that reflects back on the design in terms of player participation. Reflecting on the design, we ask: What kinds of players participated in the SPIKEY-20 virtual epidemic? How did players …

Nanoplasmonic Sensing Using Gold Nanostructures, Abbas Thajeel, Mohammed Ibrahem, Duha Ahmed Jun 2022

Nanoplasmonic Sensing Using Gold Nanostructures, Abbas Thajeel, Mohammed Ibrahem, Duha Ahmed

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

Nanoplasmonic sensing, based on the plasmonic resonance absorption of thin, irregularly-shaped Au nanostructures film, with a starting thickness of about 15 nm (±3 nm) sputtered on a quartz substrate, is used to monitor the CeO2 NPs (with an average diameter of 50 nm) film refractive index variations using different film thicknesses (90 nm, 146 nm, 172 nm, and 196 nm). Increasing the film thickness of solution-processed CeO2 NPs film, with layer-by-layer deposition on top of Au nanostructures, shows a significant redshift in the plasmonic resonance absorption of the plasmonic metal, from 580 nm to 611 nm. Such an increase is …

Study The Effect Of Cinnamon And Tea Tree Oils On Biofilm Formation Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Halah Rafeeq, Zahraa Sharba Jun 2022

Study The Effect Of Cinnamon And Tea Tree Oils On Biofilm Formation Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae, Halah Rafeeq, Zahraa Sharba

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a noteworthy human pathogen. As a virulence factor, these bacteria may create a thick coating of extracellular biofilm. This aids the organism's adhesion to biotic as well as abiotic surfaces, preventing antimicrobial agents from doing their job. Infections caused by bacterial biofilms have become more difficult to treat as a result. Therefore, the present study has been designed to investigate the effects of essential oils, individually or in combination, on the biofilms of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. In this research, the quantification of biofilm composition for 50 isolates from urine samples indicates the following statistics: [n = 24 …

The Use Of The Go/No-Go Successive Matching-To-Sample Procedure With Nonverbal Auditory Stimuli To Establish Equivalence Classes And Speaker Behavior, Robbie Hanson, Jillian Sordello, Thea Skau Engell, Caio F. Miguel

Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of the current study was to extend the findings on the use of the go/ no-go successive matching-to-sample (S-MTS) procedure to establish auditory equivalence classes. Eight college students learned to conditionally relate nonverbal auditory stimuli into three, 3-member classes. Following training, all participants met the emergence criterion for symmetry, and six out of eight participants met the emergence criterion for transitivity/equivalence. Furthermore, all participants responded with either an experimenter-defined or a unique tact, and five participants related these names intraverbally. Although these results replicate previous findings, albeit with stimuli that cannot be echoed, possible verbal mediation via tact …

BACKGROUND: Although secondary stroke prevention is important, the optimal outpatient model that improves risk factor control and decreases post-stroke complications effectively has not been established. We created Follow-up After Stroke, Screening and Treatment (FASST), an interdisciplinary clinic involving stroke physicians and pharmacists to address poststroke complications and secondary stroke prevention systemically. We present our approach to assess its proof-of-concept in our pilot study.

METHODS: We included the patients attending FASST clinic after their hospital discharge. We used validated survey screens to assess for complications: depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, cognitive impairment, disability, social support, quality of life and functional status. Data …

Effects Of Real Effective Exchange Rate And Trade Openness On Remittances: Evidence For Bangladesh, Anisul Islam, Matiur Rahman Dr Jun 2022

Effects Of Real Effective Exchange Rate And Trade Openness On Remittances: Evidence For Bangladesh, Anisul Islam, Matiur Rahman Dr

Pennsylvania Economic Review

This paper studies the effects of real effective exchange rate and trade openness on expatriates’ remittances inflows to Bangladesh. Annual data from 1975 through 2014 are employed. Efficient unit root tests, linear ARDL bounds testing and VECM are implemented. All variables are nonstationary in log-levels with I(1) behavior. The evidence on cointegration among the variables is inconclusive. The estimates of VECM reveal moderate pace of convergence toward long-run equilibrium with mixed evidence on short-run interactive feedback effects. Remittances are much more responsive to changes in real effective exchange rate and trade openness in the long run than in the short …

Evaluating The Convergence Of Incomes In Pennsylvania, 1980-2018: Did The Incomes In Pennsylvania Converge?, Yaya Sissoko, Brian Sloboda, Rubens Da Silva

Pennsylvania Economic Review

This paper analyzed the recent change in both per capita earnings from employment and per capita income (including that from transfers and non-earnings sources) by Pennsylvania’s counties between 1980 and 2018, inclusive. Then, we also divided the period into the following five time periods for additional analysis: 1980-1990, 1990-2000, 2000-2010, and 2010-2018. Absolute convergence seems to have occurred among the counties in Pennsylvania that may be attributed to the gradual heterogenization of the regional economies. This result may modify some of the conclusions drawn in the recent literature regarding the mechanisms that have generated convergence in their regions. We also …

Robust And Accurate Estimation Of Cellular Fraction From Tissue Omics Data Via Ensemble Deconvolution, Manqi Cai, Molin Yue, Tianmeng Chen, Jinling Liu, Erick Forno, Xinghua Lu, Timothy Billiar, Juan Celedón, Chris Mckennan, Wei Chen, Jiebiao Wang

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Motivation: Tissue-level omics data such as transcriptomics and epigenomics are an average across diverse cell types. To extract cell-type-specific (CTS) signals, dozens of cellular deconvolution methods have been proposed to infer cell-type fractions from tissue-level data. However, these methods produce vastly different results under various real data settings. Simulation-based benchmarking studies showed no universally best deconvolution approaches. There have been attempts of ensemble methods, but they only aggregate multiple single-cell references or reference-free deconvolution methods. Results: To achieve a robust estimation of cellular fractions, we proposed EnsDeconv (Ensemble Deconvolution), which adopts CTS robust regression to synthesize the results from 11 …

Perceptual Flexibility For Speech: What Are The Pros And Cons?, F. Sayako Earle, Carolyn M. Quam

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

How listeners handle acoustic-phonetic variability during spoken language processing is a fundamental question in the field of speech perception. A robust behavioral literature describes ways in which humans adapt their perception to accommodate idiosyncratic, or foreign-accented, speech -- or how we learn to attend to new phonetic cues, as may be important for learning a different language. And yet, we are still in the early stages of understanding the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie group-level or individual differences in perceptual flexibility. This special issue focuses on how contextual information and acoustic-phonetic input interacts with neurocognitive factors that shape the boundaries of …
