(R1956) Neutrosophic Soft E-Compact Spaces And Application Using Entropy Measure, P. Revathi, K. Chitirakala, A. Vadivel
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the concept of neutrosophic soft e-compactness is presented on neutrosophic soft topological spaces using the definition of e-open cover and its types. In addition, neutrosophic soft e-compactness and neutrosophic soft e-separation axioms are associated. Also, the concept of neutrosophic soft locally e-compactness is introduced in neutrosophic soft topological spaces and some of its properties are discussed. Added to that, an application in decision making problem is given using entropy.

Equity's Atrophy, Andrew Kull
Equity's Atrophy, Andrew Kull
Notre Dame Law Review
Current U.S. law sees numerous decisions from which a once- predictable, traditional equitable corrective has simply disappeared. The salient cases are those in which, until recently—recent history for this purpose comprising just one or two generations of lawyers and judges—equitable intervention would have been at least highly likely: because the unmodified legal outcome diverges so plainly from equity and good conscience, and because an established equitable response was part of what everybody knew. The idea that equity in U.S. law has been losing some previous degree of vitality is so venerable that it can scarcely be debatable at this point,11 …

Global Flash Drought Analysis: Uncertainties From Indicators And Datasets, Sourav Makherjee, Ashok Kumar Mishra
Open Access Publishing Fund
Flash Drought (FD) has garnered much attention in recent years, with significant advancements in the indicators applied for identifying these rapidly intensifying events. However, the difference in existing FD definitions and methodologies among research communities and the choice of different data sources underscores the importance of addressing the uncertainties associated with the global FD characteristics and their drivers. This study compares two key FD indicators derived based on evaporative stress ratio (ESR) and root-zone soil-moisture (RZSM) using three different data sources to investigate the uncertainties in global FD frequency and intensity (speed), and the influencing drivers. The results suggest that …

Koopman Operator–Based Knowledge-Guided Reinforcement Learning For Safe Human–Robot Interaction, Anirban Sinha, Yue Wang
Open Access Publishing Fund
We developed a novel framework for deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms in task constrained path generation problems of robotic manipulators leveraging human demonstrated trajectories. The main contribution of this article is to design a reward function that can be used with generic reinforcement learning algorithms by utilizing the Koopman operator theory to build a human intent model from the human demonstrated trajectories. In order to ensure that the developed reward function produces the correct reward, the demonstrated trajectories are further used to create a trust domain within which the Koopman operator–based human intent prediction is considered. Otherwise, the proposed algorithm …

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by chromosomal rearrangements affecting the 22q13.3 region or by SHANK3 pathogenic variants. The scientific literature suggests that up to 40% of individuals with PMS have kidney disorders, yet little research has been conducted on the renal system to assess candidate genes attributed to these disorders. Therefore, we first conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify kidney disorders in PMS and then pooled the data to create a cohort of individuals to identify candidate genes for renal disorders in PMS. We found 7 types of renal disorders reported: renal cysts, renal …

Federal Judicial Power And Federal Equity Without Federal Equity Powers, John Harrison
Federal Judicial Power And Federal Equity Without Federal Equity Powers, John Harrison
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article discusses the ways in which the federal courts do and do not have equity powers. Article III courts have the judicial power, which enables them to apply the law, primary and remedial. Applicable remedial law often includes the law of equitable remedies, so the federal courts have the power and obligation to give remedies pursuant to equitable principles. The law of equitable remedies, written and unwritten, is external to the courts, not created by them, the same way written law is external to the courts. Because the unwritten law of equitable remedies is found largely in judicial practice, …

Mine Action And The Reintegration Of Former Combatants: Expanding The Debate, Laurie Druelle, Henrique Garbino, Eric Mellado Åhlin
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
In the last decades, humanitarian mine action (HMA) and disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR)2 processes have increasingly been recognized as essential to paving the way for sustainable development thanks to their contributions towards human security, livelihood, and access to services. The integration between the two processes, however, has not yet been fully addressed in the literature or practice. This paper seeks to identify areas where DDR and HMA intersect and, supported by anecdotal evidence, suggest a conceptual framework for future research and implementation. Most importantly, we hope to widen the debate on the potentially synergic relationship between HMA and …

Fracture Response Of Wollastonite Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites: Evaluation Using Micro-Indentation And Finite Element Simulation, Sami Doner, Gideon A. Lyngdoh, Sumeru Nayak, Sumanta Das
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
The paper presents indentation studies on wollastonite fiber incorporated cementitious systems. The acicular nature of the fibers is poised to delay the coalescence of micro-cracks in such systems thus leading to tougher building materials. Towards that end, load-penetration depth results from the indentation studies are employed to ascertain elastic and fracture properties of wollastonite-incorporated cementitious composites. While up to 10% mass-based cement-replacement by wollastonite results in comparable elastic moduli as compared to conventional binders, the fracture toughness increases by as much as 33%. In order to gain insights into the toughening mechanisms brought about by the fine fibers, a microstructure-guided …

What is competency-based personnel selection and why was this intervention selected?
Competency-based personnel selection refers to a hiring process that is rooted in assessment of the required job-related competencies or knowledge, skills, abilities, or other characteristics (KSAOs). Competencies can be evaluated to make hiring decisions using a variety of different methods, including interviews, paper-and-pencil or computer-administered tests, work samples, or situational judgment tests, to name a few. In Oklahoma, a structured interview, typing test, and writing assessment were implemented and pre-employment tests assessing personality, cognitive skills, and attitudes were administered to staff to inform decisions about future …

The Interplay Between Perceived Usability And Quality In Visual Design For Tablet Game Interfaces, Uttam Kokil, Tracy Harwood
The Interplay Between Perceived Usability And Quality In Visual Design For Tablet Game Interfaces, Uttam Kokil, Tracy Harwood
Faculty Articles
Research in human-computer interaction (HCI) has shown inconsistencies in the relationship between users’ perception of usability and the quality of visual design in digital products. Research is lacking in the gaming domain for visual design in user interfaces on tablet screens. Despite extensive research on visual aesthetics and perceived usability, best practices offer limited guidance for game interfaces from a user-centered design perspective.
The objectives of this study are twofold: to employ a design-oriented methodology to create a real iOS tablet game app from start to finish using ideation, focus groups, iterative prototyping, usability testing, and empirically evaluating game participants’ …

Consumer Protection Of Persons With Disabilities Amidst The Covid-19, James Keith C. Heffron
Center for Business Research and Development
The Persons with Disabilities (PWD) sector was one of the most overlooked and affected sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. As consumers, PWDs have suffered difficult challenges in the access of essential goods and services, including healthcare, and these challenges have been unduly aggravated because of the crisis. The article exposes and examines the negative impact of the crisis on the consumer rights and behavior of PWDs with a special focus on the novel barriers brought about by the pandemic on their right to access. The current pre-pandemic legislation is not adequate to protect PWDs from these novel barriers as there …

Efficacy Of Antimicrobial Interventions Used In Meat Processing Plants Against Antimicrobial Tolerant Non–Antibiotic-Resistant And Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella On Fresh Beef, Norasak Kalchayanand, Sapna Chitlapilly Dass, Yangjunna Zhang, Eric L. Oliver, Bing Wang, Tommy L. Wheeler
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Salmonella is a common cause of foodborne illness in the United States, and several strains of Salmonella have been identified as resistant to antibiotics. It is not known whether strains that are antibiotic resistant (ABR) and that have some tolerance to antimicrobial compounds are also able to resist the inactivation effects of antimicrobial interventions used in fresh meat processing. Sixty-eight Salmonella isolates (non-ABR and ABR strains) were treated with half concentrations of lactic acid (LA), peracetic acid (PAA), and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), which are used in beef processing plants to screen for tolerant strains. Six strains each from non-ABR and …

Mary Astell On Neighborly Love, Timothy Yenter
Faculty and Student Publications
In discussing the obligation to love everyone, Mary Astell (1666–1731) recognizes and responds to what I call the theocentric challenge: if humans are required to love God entirely, then they cannot fulfill the second requirement to love their neighbor. In exploring how Astell responds to this challenge, I argue that Astell is an astute metaphysician who does not endorse the metaphysical views she praises. This viewpoint helps us to understand the complicated relationship between her views and those of Descartes, Malebranche, Henry More, and John Norris, as well as her sophisticated approach to biblical interpretation and theology. Attending to theocentrism …

Efficient Algorithms For Data Processing Under Type-3 (And Higher) Fuzzy Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Patricia Melin, Oscar Castillo
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that to more adequately describe expert knowledge, it is necessary to go from the traditional (type-1) fuzzy techniques to higher order ones: type-2, probably type-3 and even higher. Until recently, only type-1 and type-2 fuzzy sets were used in practical applications. However, lately, it turned out that type-3 fuzzy sets are also useful in some applications. Because of this practical importance, it is necessary to design efficient algorithms for data processing under such type-3 (and higher order) fuzzy uncertainty. In this paper, we show how we can combine known efficient algorithms for processing type-1 and type-2 uncertainty …
Why Quantiles Are A Good Description Of Volatility In Economics: An Alternative Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Kittawit Autchariyapanitkul
Why Quantiles Are A Good Description Of Volatility In Economics: An Alternative Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Kittawit Autchariyapanitkul
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In econometrics, volatility of an investment is usually described by its Value-at-Risk (VaR), i.e., by an appropriate quantile of the corresponding probability distribution. The motivations for selecting VaR are largely empirical: VaR provides a more adequate description of what people intuitively perceive as risk. In this paper, we analyze this situation from the viewpoint of decision theory, and we show that this analysis naturally leads to the Value-at-Risk, i.e., to a quantile.
Interestingly, this analysis also naturally leads to an optimization problem related to quantile regression.

Why Decreased Gaps Between Brain Cells Cause Severe Headaches: A Symmetry-Based Geometric Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
When we analyze biological tissue under the microscope, cells are directly neighboring each other, with no gaps between them. However, a more detailed analysis shows that in vivo, there are small liquid-filled gaps between the cells, and these gaps are important: e.g., in abnormal situations, when the size of the gaps between brain cells decreases, this leads to severe headaches and other undesired effects. At present, there is no universally accepted explanation for this phenomenon. In this case, we show that the analysis of correpsonding geometric symmetries empirical phenomenon leads to a natural explanation for this effect.

How To Represent Uncertainty Via Qudits: Probability Distributions, Regular, Intuitionistic, And Picture Fuzzy Sets, F-Transforms, Etc., Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
While modern computers are fast, there are still many important practical situations in which we need even faster computations. It turns out that, due to the fact that the speed of all communications is limited by the speed of light, the only way to make computers drastically faster is to drastically decrease the size of computer's components. When we decrease their size to sizes comparable with micro-sizes of individual molecules, it becomes necessary to take into account specific physics of the micro-world -- known as quantum physics. Traditional approach to designing quantum computers -- i.e., computers that take effect of …

Why Rarity Score Is A Good Evaluation Of A Non-Fungible Token, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the new forms of investment is investing in so-called non-fungible tokens -- unique software objects associated with different real-life objects like songs, painting, photos, videos, characters in computer games, etc. Since these tokens are a form of financial investment, investors would like to estimate the fair price of such tokens. For tokens corresponding to objects that have their own price -- such as a song or a painting -- a reasonable estimate is proportional to the price of the corresponding object. However, for tokens corresponding to computer game characters, we cannot estimate their price this way. Based on …
Towards Better Ways To Compute The Overall Grade For A Class, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Towards Better Ways To Compute The Overall Grade For A Class, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional way to compute the overall grade for the class is to use the weighted sum of the grades for all the assignments and exams, including the final exam. In terms of encouraging students to study hard throughout the semester, this grading scheme is better than an alternative scheme, in which all that matters is the grade on the final exam: in contrast to this alternative scheme, in the weighted-sum approach, students are penalized if they did not do well in the beginning of the semester. In practice, however, instructors sometimes deviate from the weighted-sum scheme: indeed, if the weighted …
