Perceptions And Management Of Ventenata By Producers In The Inland Pacific Northwest, Lisa Jones, John Wallace, Kathleen Painter, Pamela Pavek, Timothy S. Prather
Journal of Extension
Ventenata is an annual grass that has invaded agricultural and wildland settings in the Inland Pacific Northwest, causing economic and ecological losses. We know little about producers’ perceived risks and management of ventenata. We present results of surveys in 2011 and 2014 targeting producers across affected counties in Idaho and Washington. Awareness of ventenata and costs to producers increased across that time interval. Respondents attending ventenata Extension events adopted recommended management strategies more than those who did not attend. Our study documents the importance of continued integrated pest management research in concert with stakeholder engagement and education.

Engaging Hard-To-Reach Audiences Through Internal Interdisciplinary And External Diverse Collaborations, Erin M. Garrett, Ashley J. Belle
Journal of Extension
Through a combination of internal and external collaborations, consumer-based energy education designed for hard-to-reach audiences was successfully delivered statewide by an interdisciplinary Extension team. Program participants representing rural residents, senior citizens, and low-income audiences demonstrated improvements in knowledge and increased intention to change their home electricity usage behaviors. This outreach work can serve as a model for other Extension services to combine interdisciplinary teams with community partnerships to reach underserved audiences statewide.

Building Extension Capacity Through Internal Grants: Evaluation Of A Mini-Grant Program, Lendel K. Narine, Cristian Meier, Brian Higginbotham
Journal of Extension
Acquiring external grants can seem out of reach for Extension professionals, especially early-career professionals. While Cooperative Extension provides opportunities to assist professionals in the grant writing process, Utah State University (USU) Extension facilitates an internal mini grant program to build professionals’ capacity to apply for external funds. Using survey data from USU Extension professionals, our study sought to evaluate the processes and outcomes of the internal mini grant program. Our results provided recommendations to improve the program. Our study provides insights that can assist other institutions seeking to implement their own internal mini grant program.

Overweight And Obesity Challenges Among African Americans In Rural Alabama Black Belt, Joel Tumwebaze, Johnpaul Kagulire, Norma L. Dawkins
Journal of Extension
This study aimed at averting challenges of overweight and obesity among African Americans in rural Alabama. Focus group discussions and surveys were used to design a 12-week nutrition education and physical activity program. Results showed a significant improvement (p<0.05) in participants’ knowledge scores. Values for systolic blood pressure significantly reduced (p<0.00). There was an increase in number of participants with normal blood pressure and a reduction in number of participants with stage 2 hypertension. The study highlights that nutrition education and physical activity can lead to improved health outcomes among African Americans in rural Alabama.

Lessons Learned Recruiting Comparison Elementary Schools For Impact Evaluation Of Snap-Ed Interventions, Amanda Linares, Phoebe Harpainter, Kaela Plank, Gail Woodward-Lopez
Journal of Extension
To determine the effectiveness of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program- Education (SNAP-Ed) nutrition and physical activity programming in elementary schools, it is necessary to recruit socioeconomically similar comparison schools not receiving SNAP-Ed programming. We developed a flexible recruitment strategy to tailor our approach to each individual school district and site. Here we discuss the lessons learned during the 10-month recruitment period, including early outreach, emphasizing participation benefits, leveraging and building relationships, and visiting sites.

This article describes how community need was addressed through a traffic calming pop-up event in rural Arkansas. The event was conducted on routes connecting a neighborhood, two schools, and a municipal park. A brief survey assessed safety concerns of parents and/or guardians related to children walking or biking to school. Prior to the event, parents/guardians reported it was not safe for their children to walk or bike to school; however, the majority agreed the event made the area safer. Small-scale traffic calming events can provide evidence to stakeholders that built environment changes are an important childhood obesity prevention strategy in …

Expanding Effective Behavioral Health Literacy Programs To Address Farm Stress, Cheryl L. Eschbach, Courtney Cuthbertson, Gwyn Shelle, Ronald O. Bates
Journal of Extension
Attention to stress and mental health among agricultural producers has increased over recent years, and Cooperative Extension has been active in offering educational workshops and resources to agricultural audiences. This article describes the process and effectiveness of expanding two (university) Extension farm stress management programs to Cooperative Extension in other states through a national Farm Stress Management Summit. The two-day training Summit provided deeper knowledge about farm stress issues and prepared Extension professionals to offer behavioral health programs in their own communities and respective states. Evaluation findings highlight effective aspects of the Summit and next steps.
The Adoption Of Food Safety Practices And The Implications Of Regulation For Small Scale Farms, Elizabeth Canales, Juan Silva, Joy Anderson
The Adoption Of Food Safety Practices And The Implications Of Regulation For Small Scale Farms, Elizabeth Canales, Juan Silva, Joy Anderson
Journal of Extension
In this article we examine the adoption of food safety practices among produce growers in the south and discuss implications of food safety regulations in the U.S. Produce growers have adopted standard food safety practices to varying degrees, but there is still an adoption gap, particularly among small scale operations. Market-driven and regulatory food safety enforcement continues to tighten, and this can further hinder market access for small scale producers.

A New Lens: Using The Policy, Systems, And Environmental Framework To Guide Community Development, Caroline Backman, Clea Rome, Laura Ryser, Rebecca Sero, Debra Hansen
Journal of Extension
Extension is uniquely positioned to deliver data-driven solutions to complex community issues with University applied research, particularly through crises like COVID-19. Applying the Policy, Systems and Environmental (PSE) framework to community development is an effective, innovative approach in guiding Extension leaders to create, document, and share long-term transformative change on challenging issues with stakeholders. Beyond the public health sector, applying a PSE approach to community development provides leverage points for population-level benefits across sectors. This article describes current public health approaches, methodologies, and how the PSE framework translates to other programs with four examples of high-impact, systems level Extension projects.

Cryo-Em Structure Of The Prothrombin-Prothrombinase Complex, Eliza A Ruben, Brock Summers, Michael J Rau, James A J Fitzpatrick, Enrico Di Cera
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of the coagulation cascade converge to a common step where the prothrombinase complex, comprising the enzyme factor Xa (fXa), the cofactor fVa, Ca2+ and phospholipids, activates the zymogen prothrombin to the protease thrombin. The reaction entails cleavage at 2 sites, R271 and R320, generating the intermediates prethrombin 2 and meizothrombin, respectively. The molecular basis of these interactions that are central to hemostasis remains elusive. We solved 2 cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of the fVa-fXa complex, 1 free on nanodiscs at 5.3-Å resolution and the other bound to prothrombin at near atomic 4.1-Å resolution. In …

Is Body Composition Or Body Mass Index Associated With The Step Count Accuracy Of A Wearable Technology Device?, Jeffrey Montes, Richard D. Tandy, John C. Young, Szu-Ping Lee, James W. Navalta
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 3: Issue 1, Article 5, 2022. A simple way to gauge daily physical activity levels is to use a wearable technology device to count the number of steps taken during the day. However, it is unknown whether these devices return accurate step counts for persons with different body fat percentages or body mass index scores. The purpose was to determine if there is a correlation between either body fat percentages and/or body mass index values and the percent error calculated between a manual step count and values recorded by a wearable technology device. …

The Value Of Residential Property In East Baton Rouge Parish, Dek Terrell, Danielle Lewis
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
This report summarizes a study of the total value of residential property in East Baton Rouge parish and taxes collectable within the parish. The study also provides some general results measuring the accruacy of current assessments. However, it is important to note that our study focuses in estimating the total value of residential real estate over regions, such as blocks or the parish as a whole. Thus, this study's intent is not to provide a tool for assessing the value of individual homes.

Failure To Launch: Canadian Federal Government Attempts At Memorialising The Second World War, 1945-1967, Thomas M. Littlewood
Canadian Military History
Between the end of the Second World War and the mid-1960s, the Canadian federal government made several attempts to commemorate and memorialise those who died during the war. Despite strong government support and advocacy from the Royal Canadian Legion, the Canadian population did not believe that building a new memorial was a wise expenditure of taxpayer money. This article uses newspaper records, The Legionary and government documents to examine how successive federal governments tried and failed to commemorate and memorialise the Second World War with a national war memorial. This article also problematises the current understanding of how the Second …

Doctrine, Training And Education In The Development Of Canadian Brigadiers: A Study Of Brigadiers Robert Moncel And James Jefferson, Nicholas Wheeler
Canadian Military History
This paper argues that Anglo-Canadian doctrine had a greater influence on how Brigadiers Robert Moncel and James Jefferson commanded their brigades than the experience they gained along two different career paths. The rapid expansion of the Canadian Army during the Second World War prevented Canadian infantry and armoured brigade commanders from gaining experience in both staff and command billets. As junior or senior officers, future brigade commanders normally attended either a condensed version of Staff College or Senior Officers’ School. Here they developed two distinct skill sets before they assumed command of brigades. Despite the differing purposes of these course, …

Rethinking Organizational Structures To Support Digital Innovation, Lindsey Wharton, Devin Soper
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper presents a vision for supporting the growth and development of innovative digital services in research libraries. While libraries have been undergoing digital transformation for decades, we have seen a flowering of new digital services in recent years, from research support services related to data and digital publishing to learning support services that seek to make our pedagogy more accessible, engaging, and suited to the needs of 21st-century learners. The question of how best to support these services structurally within an organization remains an open one, however, and there is little consistency in how this is accomplished across different …
Central Bank Independence: An Examination Of Monetary And Economic Stability Through Ordinary And Extraordinary Times, Carroll Griffin, Yun Cheng
Central Bank Independence: An Examination Of Monetary And Economic Stability Through Ordinary And Extraordinary Times, Carroll Griffin, Yun Cheng
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
The idea of central bank independence (CBI) has been widely accepted over the last several decades by many countries around the world, both developed and developing. As such, many countries around the world granted autonomy to their central banks during the 1980s and 1990s. Although the majority of past studies have primarily examined the impact of central bank independence on inflation, there is only now sufficient date to empirically determine whether many of these claims are true. This study examines central bank independence over the long-term (1960 to 2015) to determine to what extent central bank independence has helped to …
The Impact Of Welfare Reform On Rates Of Abortion, Rand Ressler, Melissa S. Waters, Carter Hill
The Impact Of Welfare Reform On Rates Of Abortion, Rand Ressler, Melissa S. Waters, Carter Hill
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
Many studies have shown that some rather personal decisions have been influenced by the generosity of a state’s welfare program. Ozawa (1989), Caudill and Mixon (1993), and Clark and Strauss (1998) have all established a positive relationship between the level of financial support to unwed mothers and rates of fertility. Of course, having children is the result of having unprotected sexual relations. Such relations can lead to other outcomes besides the birth of a child. Ressler et al. (2005) and Ressler et al. (2006) found a positive link between the generosity of a state’s welfare payments and contraction rates of …
Sarbanes-Oxley Act (Sox) And Corporate Risk Management, Yuqi Gu, Wenjuan Yuan
Sarbanes-Oxley Act (Sox) And Corporate Risk Management, Yuqi Gu, Wenjuan Yuan
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
Prior studies have found mixed relationship between corporate risk management activities and firm value. In this paper, we document that corporate risk management activities are significantly affected by the strength of corporate governance. Firms use significantly less derivatives after the passage of SOX, i.e., when the corporate governance is stronger. The passage of SOX allows us to implement the difference-in-differences approach and mitigate endogeneity bias. The relation is both statistically and economically significant. Our findings shed new light on the agency problem associated with the risk management activities.

Tools Against Predators? Transparency, Education, And The Courage To Speak Up, Kristýna Paulová
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The existence and growth of predatory practices damage the reputation of open science and jeopardizes the idea of science transparency as a whole. This article introduces the tools against predators developed as part of the Stop Predatory Practices project. The project was divided into three phases. In the first phase, an analysis of the current situation in the Czech Republic was carried out. We organised an open discussion, during which participants from the scientists, librarians and other parts of the academic community talked about the systemic problems, misunderstandings and obstacles they face in the area of predatory practices. Based on …

University Libraries And The Open Research Knowledge Graph, Sorën Auer, Irina Sens, Markus Stocker, Lars Vogt, Anna-Lena Lorenz
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The transfer of knowledge has not changed fundamentally for many hundreds of years: It is usually document-based - formerly printed on paper as a classic essay and nowadays as PDF. With around 2.5 million new research contributions every year, researchers drown in a flood of pseudo-digitized PDF publications. As a result research is seriously weakened. In this article, we argue for representing scholarly contributions in a structured and semantic way as a knowledge graph. The advantage is that information represented in a knowledge graph is readable by machines and humans. As an example, we give an overview on the Open …
