A Hybrid Algorithm Based On Seeker Optimization Algorithm And Salp Swarm Algorithm For Pid Parameters Optimization, Shaomi Duan, Huilong Luo, Haipeng Liu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the premature convergence of seeker optimization algorithm(SOA) during optimizing the global problems, a new SOA-SSA hybrid algorithm based on seeker optimization algorithm and salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is proposed. The SOA-SSA algorithm is based on a double population evolution strategy, in which some individuals of the population are evolved by seeker optimization algorithm and the rest are evolved from salp swarm algorithm. The individuals in SOA and SSA both employ an information sharing mechanism to realize the coevolution. These strategies increase the diversity of the population and avoid the premature convergence. The experimental results show that …

Application Of Improved Q Learning Algorithm In Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Yejian Zhao, Yanhong Wang, Jun Zhang, Hongxia Yu, Zhongda Tian
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the job shop scheduling in a dynamic environment, a dynamic scheduling algorithm based on an improved Q learning algorithm and dispatching rules is proposed. The state space of the dynamic scheduling algorithm is described with the concept of "the urgency of remaining tasks" and a reward function with the purpose of "the higher the slack, the higher the penalty" is disigned. In view of the problem that the greedy strategy will select the sub-optimal actions in the later stage of learning, the traditional Q learning algorithm is improved by introducing an action selection strategy based on the …

Visual Inspection Model Of Uav Cluster Based On Improved Pigeon Flock Hierarchy, Qi Chen, Haoyang Cui
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aim at UAV being vulnerable to the environmental interference and the low efficiency of the traditional single-person-UAV model in the transmission line inspection, a visual inspection model for the power line by UAV is proposed based on the improved pigeon flock hierarchy. The initial landmark point of the UAV is generated based on GPS coordinates of the aircraft-carrying vehicle and the tower to be inspected, and the movement trajectory is planned. The return point of the UAV is used to update the initial landmark of onward UAV, which realizes the dynamic handover between the work-exchanging UAV, and the landmark …

Application Of Observability In Performance Evaluation Of Photosynthesis Model, Hongnai Gao, Lijiang Fu, Qian Xia, Ya Guo
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The photochemical reaction of photosynthesis involves a variety of physiological substances that cannot be directly measured. By modeling the control system, the state of these physiological substances can be es-timated based on the chlorophyll fluorescence, but the reliability of the state estimation is not given in all the reference documents. In response to this problem, based on the photochemical reaction kinetic model, the observability of the nonlinear system is introduced to evaluate the reliability of the state estimation. Aiming at the existing observability methods lacking the direct comparability due to the different dimensions of the components of different states, …

Fuzzy Super-Twisting Second Order Sliding Mode Trajectory Tracking Control For Robotic Manipulator, Baolin Du, Dachang Zhu, Yihua Pan
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A fuzzy super-twisting second order sliding mode control method is proposed for the uncertainties of the model error and external disturbance on the trajectory tracking accuracy of robotic manipulator. Based on the dynamic model of the robotic, a new non-singular terminal sliding mode manifold is designed, and an improved super-twisting algorithm is used to design the second order sliding mode controller. In order to solve the problem that the matching disturbance can only be compensated under the condition of the known disturbance boundary in the sliding mode control, the fuzzy logic algorithm is used to carryout the online compensation …

Research On Fire Emergency Evacuation Simulation Based On Cooperative Deep Reinforcement Learning, Lingjia Ni, Xiaoxia Huang, Hongga Li, Zibo Zhang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The fire accident is a major threat to the public safety, in which the high temperature, toxic and harmful gases seriously interfer the selection of the evacuation routes. Deep reinforcement learning is introduced into the research of emergency evacuation simulation, and a cooperative double deep Q network algorithm is proposed for the multi-agent environment. A fire scene model that changes dynamically over time is established to provide the real-time information on the distribution of the dangerous areas for the evacuation. The independent agent neural networks are integrated and the multi-agent unified deep neural network is established to realize the …

Investigating A Potential Sting Modulator, Jaret J. Crews
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The work contained in this thesis introduces a protein known as STING, an acronym for STimulator of INnterferon Genes, an immunosurveillance ER-membrane bound adapter protein critical to regulating the innate immune response in humans. The first chapter provides an overview of the STING pathway, outlines STING’s potential as a therapeutic target of interest, and delineates the primary challenges researchers encounter when designing small molecules to modulate the activity of STING. Current efforts in developing STING modulators have focused on devising agonists to up-regulate the STING pathway as a possible therapeutic for human cancers based on the chemical scaffold of STING’s …
Needs Assessment Of Services Provided In A Rural School District For Students With Autism, Danielle Anne Katterman
Needs Assessment Of Services Provided In A Rural School District For Students With Autism, Danielle Anne Katterman
Theses and Dissertations
The number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (autism) has steadily increased dramatically over the past generation, and more students with autism than ever before are enrolled in the public education system. Educating students with autism presents unique challenges (e.g., shortage of staff, low incidence of autism, limited programming) to rural school districts. Rural districts must adhere to the same federal and state guidelines (e.g., Individuals with Disabilities Education Act & Free and Appropriate Public Education) as urban districts that have more readily available resources in providing appropriate programming. This study examined stakeholders' perceptions of the current services offered …

Facilitators And Barriers To Farmers’ Market Use In A Rural Area, Soghra Jarvandi, Kristen Johnson, Karen Franck
Journal of Extension
Farmers’ markets may improve access to healthful foods in rural areas. Our objective was to identify facilitators and barriers to farmers’ market use in a rural county. We collected data via surveys, focus group sessions, and key informant interviews. Study participants identified the two existing farmers’ markets as community assets. Barriers to use farmers’ markets included inconvenient market hours, not accepting nutrition assistance program benefits, limited transportation, and limited variety. Interventions to improve food access should include ways to meet the needs of specific populations such as low-income residents and residents living in outlying areas without farmers’ markets.
Student Prior Knowledge And Learning In An Intelligent Tutoring System: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Vicarious And Interactive Dialogues, Keith Thomas Shubeck
Student Prior Knowledge And Learning In An Intelligent Tutoring System: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Vicarious And Interactive Dialogues, Keith Thomas Shubeck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Intelligent tutoring system (ITS) developers often assume that the system’s effectiveness is driven by its interactivity, and for good reason; research regularly shows that interactivity is a critical component for learning. However, some evidence suggests that students with low prior knowledge learn best in vicarious settings, or in settings where they can model a peer agent’s positive learning behaviors. The expertise reversal effect suggests that high prior knowledge students may not benefit from the increased granularity and interactivity that a conversation-based ITS can provide. In the current study, participants were randomly placed into an interactive condition where they interacted with …
Social Work Advocacy In Federal Immigration Courts: A Consultant’S Reflection On Successful Cases, Luis H. Zayas
Social Work Advocacy In Federal Immigration Courts: A Consultant’S Reflection On Successful Cases, Luis H. Zayas
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Advocacy for immigrant families undertaken by social workers, attorneys, and other supporters to protect against deportation, detention, and unfair government policies occurs mostly in immigration and federal courts. Social workers bring unique knowledge and skills that enhance legal teams’ representation of immigrants. This paper provides case illustrations of social work’s contribution in three types of legal actions. One illustration from immigration court demonstrates the social work consultant’s role in cancellation of removal cases when undocumented immigrants have US-citizen children. A second case is a federal class-action lawsuit to end the detention of asylum-seeking families. The third case was a federal …

The 2021 August 14 MW 7.2 Nippes, Haiti earthquake occurred 75 km west of the epicenter of the 2010 Leogane earthquake (Haiti) on the transpressive Caribbean - North America plate boundary. We present an updated fault map for Hispaniola and model coseismic and early postseismic fault slip using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar and pixel offsets. We find the earthquake ruptured multiple segments of the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone. Slip occurred in two main sub-events on either side of a restraining bend at Pic Macaya, with ∼2.7 m of peak reverse-slip east of the bend. To the west, slip jumps the …

Hit By Cupid's Arrow: Hidden Violence In Love Metaphors, Isis Dornbrook
Hit By Cupid's Arrow: Hidden Violence In Love Metaphors, Isis Dornbrook
Anthós
Love is an emotion that typically brings joy. However, the ways in which society talks about love suggest otherwise. The process of metaphor analysis makes the violence in societal expressions of love salient. Additionally, metaphor analysis shows that violent metaphors can inform the way people interact with one another throughout the stages of relationship formation, such as using metaphors to justify sexual and other types of physical abuse. Thus, this paper argues that metaphors, by shaping our attitudes and expectations about love, sex, and relationships, have observable social and cultural implications.

Passing Down: Nella Larsen's Questioning Of Eugenic Ideology, Sky R. Mcleod
Anthós
This article looks at Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel Passing and examines how eugenic ideology of the time period are explored and critiqued through the story and characters. The novel follows two light skinned black women who grew up together and are reunited as adults. This reconciliation takes place under the backdrop of the Harlem Renaissance where the expectations of New Negro womanhood mix with a growing wave of eugenic thought and practices. In the 1920’s many influential thinkers, including black leaders such as W. E.B. Du Bois, were convinced that the only way to move the human race forward was …

The Passive Approach: How Academically Motivated Students Approach Their Mental Health., Megan E. Mccoy
Anthós
The research utilizes qualitative interviews and focus groups to understand how academically motivated students approach their mental health. Mental health is defined as “emotional, psychological, and social well-being,” by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and is becoming a more significant concern in collegiate student populations. At Portland State University, the effects of mental health concerns on students are nearly double that of students around the U.S (Community Commons, n.d.). Academically motivated students are a group who seemingly strive for success and likely experience high levels of stress daily. The study found that students often take a passive approach …
Glucose Homeostasis In Human Diabetic Adipocytes: Role Of Glp1 In Sortilin Alternative Splicing, Ashley Lui
Glucose Homeostasis In Human Diabetic Adipocytes: Role Of Glp1 In Sortilin Alternative Splicing, Ashley Lui
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic and progressive metabolic disease defined by systemic insulin resistance. The inability of cells to respond to insulin and take up glucose results in elevated blood sugar that is detrimental to the overall health of patients. There is no cure for T2DM. Identification of new targets to alleviate hyperglycemia are crucial for treatment and prevention of metabolic diseases. Adipocytes play a central role in glycemic regulation by insulin stimulated glucose uptake, storage of excess nutrients, and secretion of adipokines. Major glucose transporter-4 (Glut4) is the main transporter responsible for postprandial clearance of glucose …
Analytic Solution Of 1d Diffusion-Convection Equation With Varying Boundary Conditions, Małgorzata B. Glinowiecka-Cox
Analytic Solution Of 1d Diffusion-Convection Equation With Varying Boundary Conditions, Małgorzata B. Glinowiecka-Cox
University Honors Theses
A diffusion-convection equation is a partial differential equation featuring two important physical processes. In this paper, we establish the theory of solving a 1D diffusion-convection equation, subject to homogeneous Dirichlet, Robin, or Neumann boundary conditions and a general initial condition. Firstly, we transform the diffusion-convection equation into a pure diffusion equation. Secondly, using a separation of variables technique, we obtain a general solution formula for each boundary type case, subject to transformed boundary and initial conditions. While eigenvalues in the cases of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions can be constructed easily, the Robin boundary condition necessitates solving a transcendental algebraic …

University Honors Theses
The Covid pandemic has swept across the globe impacting many different kinds of people in many different ways. Businesses and workers experienced changes in how their respective labor markets operated with new incentives. One group of laborers that experienced quite a significant impact are nurses working through the Covid pandemic. The pandemic created new incentives for nurses that heavily impacted their labor market. Through a literature review of scientific studies examining the impacts of working through a pandemic on nurses, I discovered that this was causing psychological and emotional damage to nurses. Covid spurred on an already occurring nursing shortage …

Neuroscience-Informed Self-Advocacy For Individuals With Psychiatric Disorders, Britta Harbury
University Honors Theses
Self-advocacy is an effective way to foster improved quality of care for people with psychiatric illnesses. By understanding their conditions and needs they are better able to collaborate with their clinicians and form effective treatment plans. Introducing basic neuroscience to individuals with mental illnesses equips them to navigate the American mental healthcare system, which relies on neuroscience to create diagnoses and medications. This thesis aims to create neuroscience-informed mental health resources so that individuals with psychiatric disorders can access information that may help them better advocate for themselves in the future.

Michigan Conifer Growers’ Perspectives On Disease Management, Emily S. Huff, Monique L. Sakalidis
Journal of Extension
A survey of commercial nursery and Christmas tree growers was implemented online and by mail in 2018 to understand disease issues and information preferences. Overall, the majority of the respondents reported that they prefer online sources of information and many are using Extension bulletins and sources. Cultural, chemical, and weed control methods were considered extremely effective by participants and very few used biological control methods to control disease. Participants identified spruce decline, boxwood blight, and hemlock woolly adelgid as emerging disease threats, so future information to growers should focus on identification and management of these threats.
