Houseplants As Mental Health Supports For Dorm Occupants During The Lockdown Period At Portland State University, Brittani Wallsten

Anthós

In this study, students who lived in dorms around the lockdown period of Portland State University, March 2020—September 2021, were interviewed about their experience and how their houseplants affected their mental health. This was done via in-person interviews and an online focus group. Houseplants were found to support students’ mental health by encouraging a regular routine, providing opportunities for responsibility, adding aesthetic value, and serving as a general indicator of mental health. All of the participants recommended houseplants as a mental health support to their fellow students.

Dignity, Respect, And Freedom, Lindsey Abercrombie Jun 2022

Dignity, Respect, And Freedom, Lindsey Abercrombie

Anthós

This paper looks at Irene Redfield, a character from Nella Larsen's Passing, analyzing how dignity is prioritized above all else in her life. Viewing Irene through the lenses of race, sexuality, and class, this paper delves into the intricacies of Irene's mind, attempting to contextualize her by her overt and repressed desires. Passing is a nuanced novel with complicated characters. Many scholars have attempted to understand the symbolism Larsen has imbued the novel with, producing insightful works to challenge the reader's initial perceptions of the novel and the characters. Through taking a deep-dive into Irene's mind, readers can become …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Transthyretin (TTR) is a homotetrameric protein found in human serum and is implicated in fatal inherited amyloidoses. Destabilization of native TTR confirmation resulting from mutation, environmental changes, and aging causes polymerization and amyloid fibril formation. Although several small molecules have been reported to stabilize the native state and inhibit TTR aggregation, prolonged use can cause serious side effects. Therefore, pharmacologically enhancing the degradation of TTR aggregates and kinetically stabilizing the native tetrameric structure with bioactive molecule(s) could be a viable therapeutic strategy to hinder the advancement of TTR amyloidoses. In this context, here we demonstrated α- and β-santalol, natural sesquiterpenes …

A High Spectral-Efficiency Maritime Very-High-Frequency Communication Technology And Simulation, Xinyu Dou, Xiaohui Chen, Dequn Liang, Bin Lin

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Marine communications cannot follow the development route on land of developing high frequency resources and high spectral-efficiency modulation technologies in 5G and 6G high-speed communication. The data rate and spectral-efficiency of maritime communications are low and are difficult to be improved. A high spectral-efficiency maritime very-high-frequency (VHF) communication technology based on multi-carrier time-delay overlapping modulation (MC-TDOP) is proposed. The core is delaying the subcarriers in turn and directly overlapping them in time domain. The orthogonality between the subcarriers can be neglected, thus the spectral-efficiency can be further enhanced from the fundamental information modulations. The results show that the proposed …

Classification And Creation Of Design Tools And Methods For Social Impact Considerations In Engineering For Global Development, Andrew Gary Armstrong Jun 2022

Classification And Creation Of Design Tools And Methods For Social Impact Considerations In Engineering For Global Development, Andrew Gary Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations

Every product has economic, environmental, and social impacts whether or not those impacts are explicitly considered. These impacts affect society and are an important part of engineering design. "Triple Bottom Line Sustainability" focuses on economic, environmental, and social sustainability and has become an important goal for those designing products. Economic considerations are an established part of the engineering design process. Environmental considerations are increasingly being considered in design including the development of design standards and widely used methodologies. Social impact considerations, however, lack the standardization and wide inclusion of economic and environmental considerations. This results in reduced and unbalanced consideration …

Females With Autism Traits: A Retrospective Look At Developmental Trajectories, Greer Caroline Willman Finster Jun 2022

Females With Autism Traits: A Retrospective Look At Developmental Trajectories, Greer Caroline Willman Finster

Theses and Dissertations

It is becoming more apparent in recent years that many females with autism spectrum disorder (autism) have not been identified, sometimes until adulthood. Most of what is known about early signs of autism is based on predominantly male symptomatic presentations or data gathered from females with autism who are severely affected by autism and co-morbid conditions such as intellectual developmental disorder. One of the issues contributing to the under diagnosis of females is that the presentation of symptoms or traits and developmental histories of females with autism may not be the same as those of males. There is a gap …

Authenticity Without Belief In Western Tibetan Buddhist Practice, Hannah Sharp-Wang Jun 2022

Authenticity Without Belief In Western Tibetan Buddhist Practice, Hannah Sharp-Wang

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of Tibetan Buddhism as practiced by adult converts in Utah. Semiotic ideology is a thread throughout the paper that functions as an explanatory mechanism for describing the ontological variations between beginning and seasoned practitioners. I show examples of clashing semiotic ideologies that demonstrate differing assumptions in understanding of how the world operates. In Chapter 2, I explore the concept of interiority and the taken for granted assumptions of religiosity in the West. The tensions introduced in Chapter 2 are addressed in Chapter 3, which explores how practitioners resolve concerns about authenticity through reliance on their …

Affective Transfer In Writing: Utilizing Affect In Teaching For Transfer, Emily Morgan Jun 2022

Affective Transfer In Writing: Utilizing Affect In Teaching For Transfer, Emily Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

According to current scholarship in writing studies, students with a positive affect toward writing are more likely to transfer writing knowledge and skills. Yet my findings from an IRB-approved longitudinal study suggest that this is not always the case. This study was designed to see what students transfer from their first-year composition course, focusing especially on rhetoric, process, genre, and mindfulness. In annual semi-structured interviews that took place over the course of three years, two study participants described having positive writing affect but did not discuss transfer, even when prompted. These students express caring much more about a writing task …

Characterization Of Competing Halogen- And Hydrogen-Bonding Motifs In Simple Mixed Dimers Of Hcn And Hx (X = F, Cl, Br, And I), Morgan A. Perkins, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work performs the first systematic comparison of hydrogen- and halogen-bonded configurations of the HCN/HX mixed dimer, where X = F, Cl, Br, and I. Eleven different minima have been characterized for these four heterogeneous dimers near the CCSD(T) complete basis set (CBS) limit. For each complex, two different hydrogen-bonded minima were identified: the global minimum where HX acts as the hydrogen bond donor and a local minimum where HX acts as the hydrogen bond acceptor. A halogen-bonded local minimum was also identified for all but the fluorine mixed dimer. To the best of our knowledge, three of the minima …

All Decisions

ERAP Case. Denies motion to vacate ERAP stay in licensee holdover. Declines to follow other lower courts' holdings that housing court has power to determine ERAP eligibility. Distinguishes constitutional issue from Chrysalis, finding that it is OTDA, not the court, that has authority to determine the merits of the ERAP stay. Landlord's proper remedy is an Article 78 against OTDA. Court also notes that landlord is seeking arrears and, if stay is lifted, landlord could obtain a money judgment before ERAP provisionally approved - which is a defense to such a judgment.

The Impacts Of Local Schools On Experience Of Community, Ciera M. Galbraith Jun 2022

The Impacts Of Local Schools On Experience Of Community, Ciera M. Galbraith

Theses and Dissertations

This study expands upon the research regarding the role of schools in the local community to include how they impact experience of community. Current literature and school-related legislation focus on schools as facilities for education and socialization; little research has been done to look at how schools may influence how individuals experience community. To look at the possibility of this relationship, this study uses the 2017 Rural Utah Community Study to examine how residents view local education, schools, and degrees in addition to their experience of community through community attachment, community satisfaction, and community desirability. I find that residents' views …

The Experiences That Most Affected The Political Socialization Of Us Undergraduates, Dan Ha Jun 2022

The Experiences That Most Affected The Political Socialization Of Us Undergraduates, Dan Ha

Anthós

Most articles about the Gen Z’s political beliefs focus a lot on what they believe, but not so much on how they came to or why they hold those beliefs. Through a series of interviews and one focus group meeting, I investigated what events or experiences were most instrumental in shaping the beliefs of some current US undergraduate students. I found that experiences with very strong personal impacts were the most influential in shaping the participants’ current beliefs; experiences in which they or those close to them were negatively misrepresented or in which they began to distrust certain authority figures …

On Approximating Total Variation Distance, Arnab Bhattacharyya, Sutanu Gayen, Kuldeep S. Meel, Dimitrios Myrisiotis, A. Pavan, N. V. Vinodchandran

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Total variation distance (TV distance) is a fundamental notion of distance between probability distributions. In this work, we introduce and study the computational problem of determining the TV distance between two product distributions over the domain {0, 1}n. We establish the following results.

1. Exact computation of TV distance between two product distributions is #P-complete. This is in stark contrast with other distance measures such as KL, Chi-square, and Hellinger which tensorize over the marginals.

2. Given two product distributions P and Q with marginals of P being at least 1/2 and marginals of Q being at most …

When Sarah Meets Lawrence: The Effects Of Coeducation On Women's College Major Choices, Avery Calkins, Ariel J. Binder, Dana Shaat, Brenden Timpe

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

We leverage variation in the adoption of coeducation by U.S. women's colleges to study how exposure to a mixed-gender collegiate environment affects women's human capital investments. Our event-study analyses of newly collected historical data find a 3.0-3.5 percentage-point (30-33%) decline in the share of women majoring in STEM. While coeducation caused a large influx of male peers and modest increase in male faculty, we find no evidence that it altered the composition of the female student body or other gender-neutral inputs. Extrapolation of our main estimate suggests that coeducational environments explain 36% of the current gender gap in STEM.

Ros And Mirna Dysregulation In Ovarian Cancer Development, Angiogenesis And Therapeutic Resistance, David C Stieg, Yifang Wang, Ling-Zhi Liu, Bing-Hua Jiang

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

The diverse repertoires of cellular mechanisms that progress certain cancer types are being uncovered by recent research and leading to more effective treatment options. Ovarian cancer (OC) is among the most difficult cancers to treat. OC has limited treatment options, especially for patients diagnosed with late-stage OC. The dysregulation of miRNAs in OC plays a significant role in tumorigenesis through the alteration of a multitude of molecular processes. The development of OC can also be due to the utilization of endogenously derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) by activating signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT and MAPK. Both miRNAs and ROS are …
