Reformulated Vortex Particle Method And Meshless Large Eddy Simulation Of Multirotor Aircraft, Eduardo J. Alvarez
Reformulated Vortex Particle Method And Meshless Large Eddy Simulation Of Multirotor Aircraft, Eduardo J. Alvarez
Theses and Dissertations
The vortex particle method (VPM) is a mesh-free approach to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solving the Navier-Stokes equations in their velocity-vorticity form. The VPM uses a Lagrangian scheme, which not only avoids the hurdles of mesh generation, but it also conserves vortical structures over long distances with minimal numerical dissipation while being orders of magnitude faster than conventional mesh-based CFD. However, VPM is known to be numerically unstable when vortical structures break down close to the turbulent regime. In this study, we reformulate the VPM as a large eddy simulation (LES) in a scheme that is numerically stable, without increasing …
Sleep And Eating Behavior Among Adolescent Females With Overweight Or Obesity: The Role Of Appetite-Related Cognitive Processes, Kirandeep Kaur
Sleep And Eating Behavior Among Adolescent Females With Overweight Or Obesity: The Role Of Appetite-Related Cognitive Processes, Kirandeep Kaur
Theses and Dissertations
Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality can potentiate weight gain and obesity in adolescents. Furthermore, overweight and obese females are at unique risk for insufficient sleep and associated health complications. We examined self-reported sleep duration and self-reported adequacy of sleep duration as potential moderators of the relationship between eating behavior and several cognitive processes including hedonic hunger, executive dysfunction, and self-control. We used a multisystemic conceptual framework to highlight the pathways that may explain the relationship between sleep behaviors and the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). The study employed a cross-sectional design. Participants completed baseline measures of height and weight, …
The Analysis Of Omission And Substitution Errors In Various Language Tasks In Bilingual Children, Macy Whiting
The Analysis Of Omission And Substitution Errors In Various Language Tasks In Bilingual Children, Macy Whiting
Theses and Dissertations
As the population of Spanish-English bilingual children in the United States steadily grows, the importance of accurately assessing and diagnosing developmental language disorder (DLD) has also grown. Understanding a child's underlying language learning system is critical in this process. Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of nonword repetition (NWR) tasks in bilingual children across a wide range of development, however there is little information regarding guidelines for interpretation of NWR performance or analyzing error patterns. This study was conducted to address these gaps in the research. A sample of 26 Spanish-English bilingual school aged children (6;0-9;4) were administered English and …
Comparing The Effects Of Online And In-Person Social Skills Training For Adolescents With Autism Using Peers®, Benjamin Tze Ming Ooi
Comparing The Effects Of Online And In-Person Social Skills Training For Adolescents With Autism Using Peers®, Benjamin Tze Ming Ooi
Theses and Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorder (autism) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social skills differences which can interfere with success in developing or maintaining relationships. Social skills training may promote more satisfying change in social interactions for individuals with autism, especially if they already have age-appropriate cognitive and language abilities. Social skills training is a typical approach for addressing social skills needs for many individuals with autism. In some instances, in-person social skills training or groups may not be readily available because of geographical, transportation, or other barriers. Delivering social skills training online is one way to increase access to intervention for …
A Formal Consideration Of User Tactics During Product Evaluation In Early-Stage Product Development, Trenton Brady Owens
A Formal Consideration Of User Tactics During Product Evaluation In Early-Stage Product Development, Trenton Brady Owens
Theses and Dissertations
Frequent and effective design evaluation is foundational to the success of any product development effort. Products used, installed, or otherwise handled by humans would benefit from an evaluation of the product while formally considering both the physical embodiment of the technology, termed technology, and the steps a user should take to use that technology, termed tactics. Formal and simultaneous evaluations of both technology and tactics are not widespread in the product design literature. Although informal evaluation methods have advantages, formal methods are also known to be effective. In this paper we propose a formal method for evaluating tactics and technology …

Workout Connections: Investigating Social Interactions In Online Group Exercise Classes, Fanlu Gui, Chun-Hua Tsai, Alexis Vajda, John M. Carroll
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Exercising in a group context effectively motivates physical activity participation. However, gyms and health clubs closed in-person services due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Online group exercise classes became an emerging service that attracted many participants. Exercisers are predicted to continue participation even after the restriction is lifted. However, it is unclear how such transition influenced exercisers’ and fitness instructors’ experiences. In this study, we conducted interviews with 13 exercisers and 11 fitness instructors who participated in synchronous online group exercise classes. We identified the opportunities and challenges that the participants faced in different types of social interactions, as well …

Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather
Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather
Honors Projects
While modern conceptions of Puritanism regard it as an artifact of American history, whose woman-killing theologies are long buried and forgotten, the bible in my father’s closet and the recently leaked Supreme Court draft to overturn Roe. Vs. Wade would argue otherwise. Cotton Mather’s favorite book Ornaments for the Daughters of Zion outlined both the ideals and detriments of the Anglo-American female identity. In this text, white women were taught to absolve themselves of the “nakedness” in dress Puritan settlers associated Indigenous people with. A woman’s ability to align herself to the ideals of chastity determined her own and her …

Friend Or Foe? Defining The Role Of Glutamate In Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Makayla F. Cox, Erin R. Hascup, Andrzej Bartke, Kevin Hascup
Articles
Aging is a naturally occurring decline of physiological processes and biological pathways that affects both the structural and functional integrity of the body and brain. These physiological changes reduce motor skills, executive function, memory recall, and processing speeds. Aging is also a major risk factor for multiple neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Identifying a biomarker, or biomarkers, that signals the transition from physiological to pathological aging would aid in earlier therapeutic options or interventional strategies. Considering the importance of glutamate signaling in synaptic plasticity, motor movement, and cognition, this neurotransmitter serves as a juncture between cognitive health and disease. …

What Makes A Nurse Today?: A Debate On The Nursing Professional Identity And Its Need For Change, Margreet Van Der Cingel, Jasperina Brouwer
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Background. Due to Covid-19 crisis, nursing is in the public eye more than ever. Nurses often are being seen as compassionate helpers. The public image of nursing, however, consists of stereotypes such as nursing being a 'doing' profession, care being a 'female' characteristic and is associated with images from the past. The nursing identity seems a simple and straightforward enough construct, but nothing less is true.
Methods. The presentation is based on a philosophical analysis which was published as an original paper.
Results. Looking at what a professional identity consists of, historic and social developments influence a group identity as …

Collective Consciousness: Wading Into The Discomfort Of Systemic Discrimination, Caroline Foster-Boucher, Colleen Maykut, Sydney Bremner, Jody Nelson
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Racism in nursing towards Indigenous peoples has been evident and well documented (Allen, & Smylie, 2015; Browne, 2005; Vukic et al., 2012). Canadian schools of nursing have been called upon to incorporate teaching of colonial history and address systemic discrimination against Indigenous peoples in response to Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) findings (Baker, 2019; Blanchet Garneau et al., 2017, 2021; Truth and Reconciliation Commission [TRC], 2015).

Long Chain Fatty Acids And Virulence Repression In Intestinal Bacterial Pathogens, Mary K. Mitchell, Melissa Ellermann
Long Chain Fatty Acids And Virulence Repression In Intestinal Bacterial Pathogens, Mary K. Mitchell, Melissa Ellermann
Faculty Publications
When bacterial pathogens enter the gut, they encounter a complex milieu of signaling molecules and metabolites produced by host and microbial cells or derived from external sources such as the diet. This metabolomic landscape varies throughout the gut, thus establishing a biogeographical gradient of signals that may be sensed by pathogens and resident bacteria alike. Enteric bacterial pathogens have evolved elaborate mechanisms to appropriately regulate their virulence programs, which involves sensing and responding to many of these gut metabolites to facilitate successful gut colonization. Long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) represent major constituents of the gut metabolome that can impact bacterial …

With the revolution in digital technologies, users face challenges to learn, understand, and use modern devices and online services. Thus, they seek intermediate help, i.e., assistance from others to avail the benefits of technological advancement. The prior studies showed that people with special needs, including the users with visual impairments, and older adults ask for help from their caregivers as they encounter problems with technology use. However, there is a gap in existing literature to systematically investigate the expectations, and challenges of users in availing help from others with using digital devices (e.g., computers, mobile phones) and online accounts. We …

The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the existing concern about the uncertainty surrounding patient arrival and the overutilization of resources in emergency departments (EDs). The prediction of variations in patient arrivals is vital for managing limited healthcare resources and facilitating data-driven resource planning. The objective of this study was to forecast ED patient arrivals during a pandemic over different time horizons. A secondary objective was to compare the performance of different forecasting models in predicting ED patient arrivals. We included all ED patient encounters at an urban teaching hospital between January 2019 and December 2020. We divided the data into training …

The single-stranded viral RNA (ssvRNA) known as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19 can be effectively inactivated by a number of natural ribonucleic acid-based host cell defenses. One of the most important of these defenses includes the actions of a class of small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) known as microRNAs (miRNAs). Via base-pair complementarity miRNAs are capable of specifically targeting ssvRNA sequences such as SARS-CoV-2 promoting its inactivation and neutralization. RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics analysis indicate that multiple naturally-occurring human miRNAs have extensive complementarity to the SARS-CoV-2 ssvRNA genome. Since miRNA abundance, speciation, and complexity vary significantly …
Actors’ Equity Expands Membership, Remy Leelike
Actors’ Equity Expands Membership, Remy Leelike
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog
Amidst the reopening of theaters after the coronavirus pandemic shutdown, Actors’ Equity Association (“Actors’ Equity”) was criticized for not adequately meeting the needs of its membership and for reacting too slowly in announcing its Covid Safety Plans, which left theaters without enough time to become compliant. At the time, one fear that its members had was that, because Actors’ Equity does not usually allow its members to perform without a union contract, theaters might forgo union contracts for their productions and turn to the non-union labor pool instead. At the same time, Actors’ Equity was in the process of rolling …
