Stealth Dyslexia: Cognitive And Achievement Profiles Of Gifted Students With Dyslexia, Anne Hardy Boris
Stealth Dyslexia: Cognitive And Achievement Profiles Of Gifted Students With Dyslexia, Anne Hardy Boris
Dissertations
Identifying students who are gifted with dyslexia (GWD) has presented a host of challenges to practitioners in school and clinic settings because these individuals possess both qualities of giftedness and learning difficulties, yet do not ‘fit’ in either category. The term “stealth dyslexia” was coined to indicate the presence of high abilities that may mask dyslexia traits, complicate diagnostic accuracy, and allow individuals to compensate for their weaknesses. The masking of reading difficulties can cause dyslexia to remain undetected in gifted children for a prolonged period of time which may leave them prone to academic disengagement. The present study provided …
Comparing Collegiate Coaches’ And Players’ Perceptions Of The Coaches’ Multicultural Competence, Lee Arakawa
Comparing Collegiate Coaches’ And Players’ Perceptions Of The Coaches’ Multicultural Competence, Lee Arakawa
Dissertations
The coaching effectiveness model developed by Horn (2008) describes cultural context as a backdrop that forms beliefs, perceptions, and behaviors displayed by sport coaches. Sue et al.’s (1992) multicultural competencies model stresses the value of awareness, knowledge, and skills used in all service fields to strengthen cross-cultural relationships. Therefore, multicultural competence has been identified from these models as a critical component of effective sport coaching. Despite the growing importance of multicultural competencies expressed by, and for, sport coaches (Mesquita et al., 2011; Santos et al., 2010), there remains limited understanding of how coaches obtain and apply multiculturally competent behaviors and …
Disability Identity: An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Stigma, Quality Of Life, And Psychological Distress, Tyler Ray Anderson
Disability Identity: An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Stigma, Quality Of Life, And Psychological Distress, Tyler Ray Anderson
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate disability identity and the role that it may play in moderating the effect of disability-related stigma on both quality of life and psychological distress among persons with disabilities (PWDs). With respect to this purpose, it was hypothesized that disability identity would significantly moderate both the relationship between disability-related stigma and quality of life and the relationship between disability-related stigma and psychological distress. Further, this study aimed to investigate various aspects specific to one's life experience that may impact the presence or absence of disability identity. To this regard, it was hypothesized that …

LGBTQ+ populations constitute increasing proportions of children, adolescents, and adults in the United States. Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, this group suffers from health inequities, including oral health. The report “Oral Health: Advances and Challenges” identified the LGBTQ+ community as an underserved population which faces significant barriers in accessing oral health care. Coverage of LGBTQ+ topics in formal education settings in both dental schools and dental hygiene programs is scarce, which contributes to inequities within this group. Increasing curriculum content related to LGBTQ+ populations is of utmost importance to promote optimal patient-provider interactions while improving oral health outcomes. Ensuring equity …

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
We demonstrate two applications based on grating coupled phase matching to a slab waveguide: lab-on-a-chip spectrometer using a transversely chirped grating and indoor lidar plenoptic sensor array for Time of flight (ToF) position mapping system. In the first application, a chirped grating waveguide coupler serves as a spatially dependent narrow-band filter. The transversely-chirped-input grating is fabricated on a SiO2-Si3N4-SiO2 waveguide atop a Si substrate by interferometric lithography. Light with wavelength from 400- nm to 700 nm couples into Si3N4 waveguide through transversely chirped grating incident at a 33.5⁰ angle and …

Analysis Of The Utilization Of Nebraska Medicine's Price Transparency Tool, Ingrid A. Olson
Analysis Of The Utilization Of Nebraska Medicine's Price Transparency Tool, Ingrid A. Olson
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Healthcare costs have become a significant concern for patients, healthcare facilities, economists, and politicians within the United States. In an effort to understand and reduce health-related costs, price transparency laws were enacted at the beginning of 2021. Because of these new laws, hospitals must provide a price transparency tool for their patients. “Price transparency in healthcare makes pricing information more readily available, defines the value of services, and enables patients and other care purchasers to identify, compare, and choose providers that offer the desired level of value” (AAMC, 2022). However, research results on price transparency tools use and efficacy is …

Beyond The Plant: Facing Systemic Barriers As A Meatpacking Community During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shannon Barrientos
Beyond The Plant: Facing Systemic Barriers As A Meatpacking Community During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shannon Barrientos
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed and magnified health disparities and social inequities that disproportionately burden racial and ethnic minorities. These disparities are readily seen within meatpacking communities, considering a lack of protections offered by the meatpacking industry have heightened COVID-19 susceptibility. These conditions have aggravated health inequities within rural communities throughout the span of the pandemic. Despite significant advances in research investigating the effect of COVID-19 on essential workers within the meatpacking plants, this research remains isolated within the meat processing industry. Moreover, research has focused predominantly on the pandemic’s impact on rural communities and the institutional barriers that hinder …

Hot Jupiters—short-period giant planets—were the first extrasolar planets to be discovered, but many questions about their origin remain. NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an all-sky search for transiting planets, presents an opportunity to address these questions by constructing a uniform sample of hot Jupiters for demographic study through new detections and unifying the work of previous ground-based transit surveys. As the first results of an effort to build this large sample of planets, we report here the discovery of 10 new hot Jupiters (TOI-2193A b, TOI-2207b, TOI-2236b, TOI-2421b, TOI-2567b, TOI-2570b, TOI-3331b, TOI-3540A b, TOI-3693b, TOI-4137b). Isolation Of Rat Adipose Tissue Mesenchymal Stem Cells For Differentiation Into Insulin-Producing Cells, Dina H. Kassem, Sarah A. Habib, Omar I. Badr, Mohamed M. Kamal
Pharmacy
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-especially those isolated from adipose tissue (Ad-MSCs)-have gained special attention as a renewable, abundant source of stem cells that does not pose any ethical concerns. However, current methods to isolate Ad-MSCs are not standardized and employ complicated protocols that require special equipment. We isolated Ad-MSCs from the epididymal fat of Sprague-Dawley rats using a simple, reproducible method. The isolated Ad-MSCs usually appear within 3 days post isolation, as adherent cells display fibroblastic morphology. Those cells reach 80% confluency within 1 week of isolation. Afterward, at passage 3-5 (P3-5), a full characterization was carried out for the isolated …

081 Modulation Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor By Adipose Tissue: Implications For Skin Carcinogenesis, S. Shareef, Jesse Veenstra, J. J. Bernard
Dermatology Meeting Abstracts
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that responds to chemical carcinogens. An endogenous AhR agonist, 6-Formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole, is produced following ultraviolet light(UV) absorption by tryptophan. Epidemiological studies show a correlation between exposure to AhR agonists and non melanoma skin cancer(NMSC). As an example, AhR activation promotes metabolism of pro-carcinogens to carcinogens such as the metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene to benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide(BPDE). There are differing epidemiological studies which explain the relationship between obesity and NMSC—some demonstrate a positive association while others demonstrate a negative association. However, evidence supporting an inverse correlation is relatively weak and heavily confounded by UV …

Dermatology Meeting Abstracts
Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is associated with a significant disease burden. The use of high-cost settings care are common among HS patients.
Objective: To explore factors that may influence hospital admissions and readmissions among HS patients.
Methods: Using ICD-9/10 codes (705.83 and L73.2), we extracted the medical records of adult HS patients who visited the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) ED between 2010 and 2020.
Results: Of the 100 HS patients, 52 (52%) were admitted to an inpatient service. Hypertension (OR:2.55,95% CI:1.11-5.83, p value=0.027), diabetes mellitus (OR:2.42, 95%CI:1.05-5.61, p value =0.039), cellulitis (OR: 19.28, 95%CI:4.23-87.96 p<0.001), sepsis (OR:10.25, 95%CI:1.34-89.24, p value=0.025), and depression (OR:3.32, 95%CI:1.10-10.04, p value =0.002) were significant predictors of admission. Chronic kidney disease (OR:3.05, 95% CI:1.00-9.23,p value=0.049), congestive heart failure (OR:4.06, 95%CI:1.19-13.80, p value =0.025), coronary artery disease (OR:15.20, 95%CI:2.80-82.65, p value=0.002), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR:8.94, 95%: 1.51-52.86, p value =0.003), cellulitis (OR:4.62, 95%CI:1.66-12.88, p=0.003), sepsis (OR:3.75, 95%CI:1.02-13.82,p value =0.047), and depression (OR:4.50, 95%CI:1.54-13.18, p value=0.006) were positively associated with readmission. Those who received outpatient dermatology care had a lower risk of being admitted (n=87, 28.7% vs n=13,100%, p <0.001) and readmitted (n=10, 11.5% vs n=5, 38.5%, p value =0.0108).

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is linked to lifelong reductions in muscle mass due to intrinsic functional deficits in myoblasts, but the mechanisms underlying these deficits are not known. Our objective was to determine if the deficits were associated with changes in inflammatory and adrenergic regulation of IUGR myoblasts, as was previously observed in IUGR muscle. Primary myoblasts were isolated from IUGR fetal sheep produced by hyperthermia-induced placental insufficiency (PI-IUGR; n = 9) and their controls (n = 9) and from IUGR fetal sheep produced by maternofetal inflammation (MI-IUGR; n = 6) and their …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding heifers a vitamin and mineral supplement and targeting divergent rates of weight gain during early gestation on the fetal liver amino acid, carbohydrate, and energy profile at d 83 of gestation. Seventy-two crossbred Angus heifers were randomly assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement to one of four treatments comprising the main effects of vitamin and mineral supplementation (VTM or NOVTM) and feeding to achieve different rates of weight gain (low gain [LG] 0.28 kg/day vs. moderate gain [MG] 0.79 kg/day). Thirty-five gestating heifers with female fetuses …

The goal of this study was to evaluate the variation in spoilage microbiota associated with sliced, prepackaged deli-style ham from varying processing environments available in the retail market in the United States. Three different brands of presliced ham, water added were purchased at local markets and evaluated every 2 wk beginning 4 wk prior to the sell-by date until 4 wk beyond the sell-by date. Analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA genes using operational taxonomic units showed that Brand A had a different bacterial community structure compared with Brands B and C, according to unweighted (P = 0.006) and weighted …

The 2015 Paris agreement aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions and keep global temperature rise below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. Reducing CH4 emissions from leaking pipelines presents a relatively achievable objective. While walking and driving surveys are commonly used to detect leaks, the detection probability (DP) is poorly characterized. This study aims to investigate how leak rates, survey distance and speed, and atmospheric conditions affect the DP in controlled belowground conditions with release rates of 0.5–8.5 g min−1. Results show that DP is highly influenced by survey speed, atmospheric stability, and wind speed. The average DP in Pasquill–Gifford stability …

Synthetic Studies On Oxidative Dearomatization Reactions And Applications In Synthesis Of The Kb343 Core Structure, And Investigation Of Bioactive Thiazolidines, Marian Awadalla
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Natural products have inspired researchers over the years due to their complexity and biological activity. Organic chemists have made great efforts to investigate new unambiguous methodologies toward the synthesis of these complex structures. Moreover, the synergy between total chemical synthesis and medicinal applications to evaluate the biological activity of the isolated compounds significantly raised the desire for discovery of novel synthetic approaches. The research described in this dissertation focuses on oxidative dearomatization reactions as a key reaction to construct natural products. The three specific aims are as follows: Aim 1: investigation of the applications of oxidative dearomatization reactions for different …
