Decolonizing The Corpus: A Queer Decolonial Re-Examination Of Gender In International Law's Origins, David Eichert Aug 2022

Decolonizing The Corpus: A Queer Decolonial Re-Examination Of Gender In International Law's Origins, David Eichert

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article builds upon queer feminist and decolonial/TWAIL interventions into the history of international law, questioning the dominant discourses about gender and sexual victimhood in the laws of armed conflict. In Part One, I examine how early European international law writers (re)produced binary and hierarchical ideas about gender in influential legal texts, discursively creating a world in which wartime violence only featured men and women in strictly defined roles (a construction which continues to influence the practice of law today). In Part Two, I decenter these dominant discourses by looking outside Europe, questioning what a truly “international” law would look …

The Brcko Arbitration: A Blueprint For Ending Current And Future Ethnic Territorial Conflicts, Emma Delaney Strenski Aug 2022

The Brcko Arbitration: A Blueprint For Ending Current And Future Ethnic Territorial Conflicts, Emma Delaney Strenski

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Within the fields of conflict resolution, political science, and history, I am researching the effectiveness of mediating an end to current and future ethnic, territorial conflicts through international law specifically an international arbitration process. I am using the Brcko Arbitration, completed as part of the Dayton Peace Accords, as a case study of the effectiveness of international arbitration in peace building. After three years of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992-1995, Brcko was a multiethnic and multireligious city and was a cultural dividing line between the two ethnically autonomous regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its options were to join …

Investigating Granulopoiesis Of Neutrophils From Myeloblasts In The Bone Marrow Post Novel Anti-Schistosoma Compound Treatment, Sarah Alsuleiman, Paul Davis

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Schistosomiasis, a commonly neglected tropical disease, is a waterborne parasitic worm infection able to infect through direct skin penetration. This disease affects approximately 270 million people worldwide and ranks only second to malaria as a leading infectious disease. Although some possible alternatives are emerging, currently, the most effective drug treatment is praziquantel (PZQ). However, PZQ is only effective against the adult stage of the worm, allowing juvenile worms to progress in the infection. Additionally, Schistosoma worms are developing resistance to this drug as reduced efficacy has been noted. Thus, the need for drug discovery and testing is increased. SA01, a …

Effective Sequence Models And Graph Neural Networks For Molecular Data Analysis, Chaochao Yan Aug 2022

Effective Sequence Models And Graph Neural Networks For Molecular Data Analysis, Chaochao Yan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Drug discovery is the process of discovering new candidate medications. New drugs are continually developed by pharmaceutical industries to address increasing medical needs. Drug discovery involves a series of processes including target identification and validation, hit identification, lead generation and optimization, and finally the identification of a candidate for further development. The development further includes optimization of chemical synthesis and its formulation, toxicological studies in animals, clinical trials, and eventually regulatory approval. Both of these processes are time-consuming and cost-expensive. Computer-aided drug discovery mainly relies on modern computers to model drug molecules, which can speed up the process of drug …

A Real-Time Activity Recognition In A Congested Wireless Environment, Israel Oludayo Elujide Aug 2022

A Real-Time Activity Recognition In A Congested Wireless Environment, Israel Oludayo Elujide

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: This dissertation reports on how to achieve real-time activity recognition in a congested wireless environment. Recently, human activity recognition with WiFi has been the focus of many researchers due to the limitations of legacy approaches like video cameras and sensors. Users have concerns with privacy when it comes to video activity recognition. Likewise, activity recognition sensors can be expensive, obtrusive, and inconvenient to be worn for an extended period of time. The urgency for implementing contactless activity recognition has also been accelerated due to changes in society and social interaction because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many public facilities like …

The Right To Research In Africa: Making African Copyright Whole, Desmond O. Oriakhogba Aug 2022

The Right To Research In Africa: Making African Copyright Whole, Desmond O. Oriakhogba

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

The imbalance existing within the African copyright ecosystem in relation to access to information for research and education became more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic. As teaching, learning and research inevitably occur on digital platforms, learners and researchers continue to grapple with the challenges of accessing materials owing largely to the protection of these resources under copyright law. Similarly, African libraries and knowledge curators found themselves ill-equip to perform their role of enabling access to information. To create the balance, therefore, there is a dire need for the recalibration of the African copyright system from the perspective of human rights …

Cyborgs And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Lou Colasanti Aug 2022

Cyborgs And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Lou Colasanti

Student Scholarship

Medical technology is advancing at lightning speed with the potential to drastically benefit the disabled. These new technologies will result in humans who will use a wide array of assistive technologies and will likely be labelled as Cyborgs. Assistive technologies such as self-driving cars, robots, computer chip implants, insertable medical hardware, and exoskeletons are already well developed. The day is rapidly approaching when Cyborgs as a class will be large and influential. Critically, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the judges tasked with enforcing this legislation, and the legislature itself are all ill equipped to handle the speed of this …

An Integrated Engineering Model For Advising, Rebecca Bates, Catherine Mcgough Spence, Darcie Christensen, Robert Sleezer, Jodi Nelson, Ryan Walerius, Rachael Johnson

Integrated Engineering Department Publications

This evidence-based practice paper describes the theoretical foundations of the supportive advising practices used by the Integrated Engineering Department (IE) at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The driving motivation for the advising model is to support the development of student engineers as whole people. Generally in academia, faculty in traditional professor roles serve as formal advisors, mentors, facilitators, evaluators, and coaches and are joined by full-time staff that serve in roles to support student development. Integrated Engineers at Minnesota State University, Mankato are supported to become the engineer they want to be. This paper describes the unique model employed by IE …

Integrated Engineering Department Publications

This is the first of a series of studies that explore the relationship between disciplinary background and the weighting of various elements of a manuscript in peer reviewers’ determination of publication recommendations. Research questions include: (1) To what extent are tacit criteria for determining quality or value of EER manuscripts influenced by reviewers’ varied disciplinary backgrounds and levels of expertise? and (2) To what extent does mentored peer review professional development influence reviewers’ EER manuscript evaluations? Data were collected from 27 mentors and mentees in a peer review professional development program. Participants reviewed the same two manuscripts, using a form …

The Rise Of Environmental, Social And Corporate Governance Disclosures In The United States And Mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence In Europe: Implications For U.S. Lawyers, Marie-Claude Jean-Baptiste

Global Business Law Review

Over the past decade, due in part to the devastating impact of the global financial crisis of 2008 and growing awareness of climate change, the world witnessed increasing interest on the part of society in general, and investors in particular, for responsible business. “Responsible business” is the concept that business should be conducted in a way that 1) does not violate fundamental rights of the people affected by the business activity; 2) does not exacerbate environmental harm; and 3) complies with basic principles of good governance. Society’s interest in responsible business has been reflected in growing pressure on businesses to …

Veterinary Reporting And Immunity Laws In The United States: How This Model Law Could Positively Impact National Veterinary Practices And International Animal Law, Rachel Al-Alami

Global Business Law Review

This Note highlights the importance of animal law, including its impact on human violence and international businesses involving animals. The issues in veterinary reporting of suspected animal abuse must be addressed, as it has a direct effect on exposing the link between animal violence and human violence. Each state is encouraged to adopt the legislation proposed by this Note; it aims to reform the laws surrounding veterinary reporting of suspected animal abuse, and it provides veterinary professionals with immunity for reporting in good faith. This Note discusses the background of animal law, including the current state of affairs for both …

Constitutional Technocracy: The Theoretical Foundations, Abigail R. Moncrieff Aug 2022

Constitutional Technocracy: The Theoretical Foundations, Abigail R. Moncrieff

Law Faculty Research Projects

This dissertation argues that John Stuart and Harriet Taylor Mill were the first constitutional technocrats.

“Constitutional technocracy” is obviously not a new idea given that I found it in the Mills’ 163-year-old work. But “constitutional technocracy” is a new name for an unusual set of ideas: a set of ideas that many prior scholars have labeled “muddleheaded” when reading the Mills’ oeuvre.

The source of the “muddleheaded” critique is the apparent tension between technocracy and liberalism. Historically, “technocracy” is a system of anti-liberal political institutions: the complete consolidation of power in scientific experts who can discover and implement objectively correct …

The Lived Experience Of Pre-Nursing Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kendall Darr

2022 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Today’s pre-nursing (PN) students represent the future for pre-licensure nursing program enrollment. Previous studies have explored study habits and predictors of success of PN students, yet little is known about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe PN student perceptions of how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected them. Study participants (n = 364) offered short-answer responses that ranged from detailed accounts of the effects the pandemic had on them (86.3%) to no effects at all (13.7%). Data analysis revealed four study themes that illustrated participants’ experiences: (a) Learning Virtually, (b) Pursuing Work-Life …

Are Risk Factors For Postpartum Depression Different Between Adult And Adolescent Mothers Of Infants In Neonatal Intensive Care?, Milly Yu

2022 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent and debilitating mental disorder, but limited research exists comparing risk factors between adolescent and adult mothers. To further research comparisons between adolescent and adult mothers, a cross-sectional design of two merged datasets was used to compare eleven recognized risk factors for PPD. The sample consisted of 82 mothers with NICU infants representing 35 adults ages 20-44 and 47 adolescents ages 13-19. Assessments via the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) indicted significantly higher mean scores for adolescent mothers. Yet, significant risk factors including pregnancy complications, lower gestational age and infant birth weight, and cesarean birth …

The researcher investigated educators’ and administrators’ perceptions of technology by conducting inperson interviews at the conclusion of the two-year study. The analysis of qualitative data, gathered from all interviews and researcher journal entries, fell into various thematic categories, …

Surmounting Perceived Barriers For Missouri Female Superintendents: A Phenomenological Study, Leslee Kristina Smith Aug 2022

Surmounting Perceived Barriers For Missouri Female Superintendents: A Phenomenological Study, Leslee Kristina Smith

Dissertations

Female superintendents throughout the United States disproportionately represent superintendents of public school districts (Cassidy et al., 2021; Gullo & Sperandio, 2020). This research study utilized the theoretical frameworks of feminism and the structured organization of institutions (Acker, 1990). In addition, the qualitative study used the phenomenological design. An open-ended survey was utilized, as well as a follow-up interview with open-ended questions to solicit deeper, lived experiences of self-imposed barriers and the strategies lead female superintendents in a Midwest state employed to surmount those barriers. Forty-four female lead superintendents in a Midwest state shared stories of their journeys to a lead …

The Cultivation Of Transformational Leadership In Secondary School Principals, Christian S. Overstreet Aug 2022

The Cultivation Of Transformational Leadership In Secondary School Principals, Christian S. Overstreet

Dissertations

Due to the challenges schools and school administrators face in the 21st century, transformational leadership is considered the most effective approach to school leadership (Bonsu & Twum-Danso, 2018; Longwell-McKean, 2012; Valentine & Prater, 2011). The purpose of this explanatory, sequential, mixed-methods study was to investigate the importance of cultivating transformational leadership qualities and traits within secondary school principals through professional development opportunities, networking experiences, and mentorships. There has been a lack of research on the need to train in transformational leadership and whether or not it positively influences follower outcomes (Peters, 2014; Tafvelin, 2013; Udin, 2020). Phase one data were …

Experimental Study Of Flow Characteristics And Geometry Of Scour Hole Around Cylindrical Piers Subject To Wave And Current, Qazi Ashique E Mowla

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis concerns the unique flow structure around bridge piers under the wave and current conditions. The flow characteristics around piers may change depending on the flow conditions and geometry of the pier. These flow structures imprint themselves on the streambed as scour holes. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the changes that occur in the flow pattern and in the geometric pattern of scour holes around piers in waterbodies subject to waves and currents. Physical models of two piers with different diameters (19 mm and 50 mm) were built and installed in a sediment bed. A total of 19 …

Mind Broadening: Cognitive States And Traits Associated With Intrapersonal Creativity And Diverse Cultural Experiences, Jessica J. Stephens Aug 2022

Mind Broadening: Cognitive States And Traits Associated With Intrapersonal Creativity And Diverse Cultural Experiences, Jessica J. Stephens

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

An experience with a different culture (cross-cultural experience; CCE) can provide opportunities to think about new and unfamiliar concepts and to solve problems using cross-cultural knowledge and inspired thinking. This could be because a CCE disrupts rigid thinking and compels open, unique, and integrative thinking. To test this, three experiments were executed. Each tested the influence of a temporary mindset of deculturation, which describes thoughts related to suppressing one’s dominant culture while adapting to a new culture, on generative forms of creative thinking. Two of these experiments also evaluated the influence of the temporary mindset, acculturation, which describes thoughts of …
