Smart Spine Tape: Active Wearable Posture Monitoring For Prevention Of Low Back Pain And Injury, Samuel J. Borda
Smart Spine Tape: Active Wearable Posture Monitoring For Prevention Of Low Back Pain And Injury, Samuel J. Borda
Master's Theses
Back pain and injury are a global health issue and are a leading cause of work and activity absence. Prevention would not only save those affected from the burden of pain and discomfort, but would also save people from loss of over 290 million workdays annually and save the healthcare system billions of dollars in expenses per year. Successful research and development of a wearable technology capable of comprehensively monitoring spinal postures that are leading causes of back pain and injury can result in prevention of mild to severe back pain and injury for high-risk people. To accomplish this, the …

The purpose of this paper is to examine how higher education systems limit access to engineering education for disabled and neurodivergent engineering students. Throughout this paper we will discuss ableism in higher education systems. Particularly, U.S. institutions and education are designed for non-disabled and neurotypical people rather than with accessibility for all despite legal efforts to improve access to education. We also provide two narratives from the authors that describe their experiences with having a disability and being neurodivergent in engineering education. Finally, we suggest other paradigms and methodologies engineering education researchers can utilize when conducting research on disability and …

Byoe: Making Connections Between Fluid Mechanics And Abstract Painting, Thomas Shepard, Charles Mossey, Jacob Swanson, Colin Huntington, Mary Murphy
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
This bring your own experiment (BYOE) paper details two iterations of a hands-on painting project that has been well-received by fluid mechanics students. In the conception of this project the authors have explored many of the relevant parameters for different painting techniques: drip painting, pendulum painting spray painting, and acrylic pours – one subset of which is spinning pours. These methods were explored both in terms of relevant fluid mechanic phenomenon as well as with hands-on experimentation, reviewing instructional videos and talking with artists. These efforts led to creation of short instructional videos that students can watch before undertaking their …

Using Poultry To Enhance Food Security In Stann Creek, Belize, Emily Spatz
Using Poultry To Enhance Food Security In Stann Creek, Belize, Emily Spatz
Poultry Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Food insecurity is a growing issue in developing and developed countries alike, and in countries like Belize, the prevalence of hunger has soared in recent years. Not having access to diets with sufficient calories and nutrients leads to a host of developmental issues, including stunting and cognitive delays. The purpose of this work was to create an all-encompassing manual for small-scale broiler production, with the intention of another honors student overseeing the implementation of the ideas set forth in the manual, in order to provide nourishment for the students and staff of a school in Belize. After determining that the …

A Policy Project: Implementing Safe Firearm Storage Legislation In Kentucky., Maggie M. Wiser
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Ensuring the safe storage of firearms in the home is a research-supported method of reducing the incidence of firearm injury and death, specifically unintentional injury and self-harm in the pediatric population. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping all firearms stored locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. While evidence shows that implementing laws regulating the storage of firearms can be effective to reduce morbidity and mortality, the state of Kentucky currently has no such regulations. For this DNP project, John Kingdon’s Multiple Streams Framework was used as a guideline for policy analysis with the intention of identifying opportunities to advocate …
Development Of A Project To Improve Prenatal Education At A Rural Medically Assisted Treatment Center Focused On Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome And Parenting Skills., Tracey Brink
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Abstract
Background: Many women who suffer from substance use disorder syndrome (SUDS) have low self-esteem and can be labeled as “unfit parents” which can impede infant bonding and maternal sobriety. Parent and self-efficacy are associated with improved maternal-infant attachment and sobriety (Adams, et.al. 2021). The earlier prenatal education is implemented, the more empowered the mothers will feel to be able to help their infants and themselves.
Setting: A medically assisted treatment center (MAT) for pregnant women who presents with SUDS. The six-bed inpatient facility is in a rural county in central Kentucky.
Purpose: To create an educational program about parent …
Reducing The No-Show Rate At A Community Mental Health Organization., Philip E. Pippen
Reducing The No-Show Rate At A Community Mental Health Organization., Philip E. Pippen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Relative to other outpatient healthcare specialties, appointment nonattendance (no-shows) is most prevalent in psychiatric settings. Upon meeting with a community-based mental health organization in Louisville, KY (LCMHO), referral no-shows for intake appointments were identified as a significant issue. LCMHO’s intake appointment no-show rate, estimated at 25 – 40%, exceeded nonattendance trends in the literature. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to develop and implement a referral engagement reminder intervention for improving intake appointment attendance. A systematic approach guided by the Model for Improvement was applied to foster this evidence-supported practice change. The project’s findings included a 16% …

The Effects Of Stress On The Mammalian Nucleolus And Ribosome Synthesis, Russell T. Sapio
The Effects Of Stress On The Mammalian Nucleolus And Ribosome Synthesis, Russell T. Sapio
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Ribosomes are responsible for translating every protein in the cell and are essential in all domains of life. Ribosome biosynthesis (RB) takes place in the nucleolus and is an intricate hierarchical process involving over 200 factors, including ribosomal proteins, ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and trans-acting ribosome biogenesis factors (RBFs). Inhibiting RB can disrupt nucleolar integrity, causing ribosomal- and nucleolar-factors to delocalize. This can stabilize the transcription factor p53, which is normally degraded rapidly, ultimately causing cell cycle arrest or apoptosis, through a mechanism termed the nucleolar stress response (NSR). This thesis explores the effects of inhibiting RB post rRNA transcription and …

The Relationship Between Sickle Cell Anemia And Falciparum Malaria: Is It Human Evolution In Action?, Alan L. Gillen, Jared G. Mast, Nathan Mast
The Relationship Between Sickle Cell Anemia And Falciparum Malaria: Is It Human Evolution In Action?, Alan L. Gillen, Jared G. Mast, Nathan Mast
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The sickle cell trait has been widely considered a classic example of human evolution in action because of the mutation’s ability to protect against malarial infections. Under normal physiological conditions, Plasmodium falciparum is capable of reproducing and spreading systemically, however individuals carrying the sickle cell trait possess sickled erythrocytes that excessively leak potassium, resulting in the inhibition of P. falciparum development. Recent studies have shown that the mutation responsible for the sickle cell trait – hemoglobin S (HbS) mutation – is higher in areas of the world where malaria is endemic. This indicates that the mutation is nonrandom in nature, …
Employment Discrimination’S Impact On African American’S Professional And Personal Lives, Trey D. Williams
Employment Discrimination’S Impact On African American’S Professional And Personal Lives, Trey D. Williams
Information Systems Undergraduate Honors Theses
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it illegal to discriminate against a person because of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The law also protects individuals from retaliation if they complain about discrimination, participate in an employment discrimination proceeding, or reasonably oppose discrimination. Although Title VII makes discrimination illegal, it is still present in the workplace. The objective of this thesis is to discuss employee discrimination based on race and sex. Specifically, I will analyze the current workplace discrimination against African American men and women as well as the psychological, physiological, and emotional effects …
The Moderating Role Of Experiential Avoidance Between Child-Caregiver Dynamics And Stem Motivation, Dylan L. Harrell

The National Academy of Sciences released a report that discussed the increased need to improve interest and retention of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers in the United States. Early childhood factors within one’s family plays an essential role in the process of career decision making, self-concept, and vocational identity. The current study examined the relationship experiential avoidance has on early family dynamics (i.e., family environment, differentiation of self, attachment, and perceived parenting) and perceived motivation in STEM. A total of 231 participants currently enrolled in a Southern University taking a STEM course (Psychology, Biology, Social Science, Computer Science, …
Smoke Season, Harrison Dietzman
Smoke Season, Harrison Dietzman
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Anyone who’s spent time in the Western United States is now familiar with living in and alongside wildfire smoke. The smell permeates everything. When I was on a fire crew in Washington state, we slept outside in the smoke. We’d wake to find our sleeping bags sprinkled in white. Each morning brought a ritual of coughing, itching, dryness and persistent low-grade headaches. Last summer, shortly after I moved to haze-shrouded Sacramento, ash floated through the orange trees and settled on the decaying Victorians lining my street. The formerly niche experience of living in and with the smoke has become ordinary …

“Me” Versus “Them”: How Mental Illness Stigma Influences Adolescent Help-Seeking Behaviors For Oneself And Recommendations For Peers, Alice P. Villatoro, Melissa J. Dupont-Reyes, Jo C. Phelan, Bruce G. Link
Public Health
Mental illness stigma is a significant barrier to utilizing mental health services for young populations. Few studies have evaluated how specific stigma dimensions relate to help-seeking and recommendations among adolescents. We examined how the stigma dimensions of labeling, stereotypes, and separation/discrimination influenced self-reported help-seeking behaviors of adolescents and recommendations for hypothetical peers with a mental health problem. Longitudinal data (four assessments) from a study evaluating the effectiveness of three antistigma interventions (curriculum, contact, materials, vs. control) among adolescents were analyzed (n = 396). Help-seeking outcomes comprised services in formal (e.g., doctor), informal (e.g., friend), or school-based (e.g., school counselor) settings. …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: August 1, 2022, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The LEI-N rose by 0.68% during June 2022. The increase in the leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic activity six months in the future, signals that the Nebraska economy will grow slowly through the end of 2022. The indicator improved for two primary reasons. First, there was an increase in manufacturing hours-worked during June. Second, respondents to the June Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase sales and employment.

Arthroscopic Internal Fixation Of Coracoid Fractures: Surgical Technique Guide, Shariff K. Bishai, Guy R. S Ball, Michael R. Maceroni, Samuel D. Howard
Orthopedics Articles
Fractures of the coracoid process are uncommon injuries and are usually the result of high-energy trauma or avulsion-type injuries. Typically coracoid fractures treated with nonoperative management have yielded good results. Operative treatment of coracoid fractures is reserved for a subset of clinical situations, including fracture nonunion. We detail our technique for arthroscopic debridement of a Type II coracoid fracture nonunion, as well as the use of arthroscopic-assisted percutaneous fixation for a Type II coracoid fracture.

California’s freshwater ecosystems—its lakes, rivers, floodplains, meadows, natural and managed wetlands, and estuaries—are a vital part of the state’s natural infrastructure. These ecosystems provide numerous benefits, including water supply, hydropower, flood control, fisheries, recreation, and cultural and aesthetic value. They are also home to the nation’s most diverse array of plant and animal communities, with numerous freshwater species found only in California (Jensen et al. 1993; Grantham et al. 2017).

Perception Of Illness And Its Association With Willingness To Adhere To Treatment In Chronic Hepatitis C Patients With New Diagnosis Of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Carmel Kruse
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Chronic liver disease is becoming the most common cause of mortality, morbidity, and utilization of healthcare services globally. Both nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and chronic hepatitis C (CHC) are frequent causes of chronic liver disease. Recently, there have been significant findings on the relationship between NAFLD and CHC; patients with CHC have a higher incidence of NAFLD. The introduction of direct-acting antivirals has cured more CHC patients than ever before. Unfortunately, the current interventions for NAFLD requiring behavioral change remain ineffective. Patient’s ability to follow advice depends largely on their health beliefs; therefore, understanding their illness perception is an …

Responses From Young Children Not On The Autism Spectrum On Selected Questions From The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (Ados-2), Lauren Lamar
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a widely used instrument in the assessment of autism spectrum disorder. One of the modules requires students to answer questions requiring relatively high-level language skills but that module could be given to children as young as four years of age. It is unclear how young non-spectrum children would respond to such questions. This study analyzed types of responses provided by kindergarten, first, and second grade students when asked questions from a subtest on the ADOS-2, Module 3. The sample was largely made up of typically developing students (n = 146) with the …
