Gravitational Potential And Galaxy Rotation Curves In Multi-Fractional Spacetimes, Gianluca Calcagni, Gabriele U. Varieschi
Gravitational Potential And Galaxy Rotation Curves In Multi-Fractional Spacetimes, Gianluca Calcagni, Gabriele U. Varieschi
Physics Faculty Works
Multi-fractional theories with integer-order derivatives are models of gravitational and matter fields living in spacetimes with variable Hausdorff and spectral dimension, originally proposed as descriptions of geometries arising in quantum gravity. We derive the Poisson equation and the Newtonian potential of these theories starting from their covariant modified Einstein’s equations. In particular, in the case of the theory Tv with weighted derivatives with small fractional corrections, we find a gravitational potential that grows logarithmically at large radii when the fractional exponent takes the special value α = 4/3. This behaviour is associated with a restoration law for the Hausdorff …
Assessing The Indigenous Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (Amf) Community Associated With Sea Oats Along The Georgia Coast At Jekyll And Tybee Islands, Kylie Stover
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Coastal sand dunes are fragile ecosystems that serve as natural defenses to protect the adjacent mainland by absorbing the impacts and energy from severe storms. Different efforts have been taken to restore coastal sand dunes, focusing on foredunes. However, there are many strategies involved with coastal restoration and one superior technique has not been found to be the best. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) supply a range of limiting nutrients (N, P, Fe, and Zn) to the host plant while improving dune stability. This study aimed to assess and compare the diversity of the indigenous AMF community associated with sea oats …

A Panel Study Of Outsourced Maintenance Impact On Major U.S. Passenger Airlines' Profitability (1995-2019), Linfeng Jin, John Mott, Chuyang Yang, Chien-Tsung Lu
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
This study investigates eight viable United States major passenger airlines' outsourced maintenance impact on profitability between 1995 and 2019 by using panel data analysis. The results demonstrate that the percentage of airline outsourced maintenance and inhouse maintenance labor pay have no statistically significant impact on profitability. The researchers call for the further research with a larger sample, and more time periods to explore airlines' outsourced maintenance impact on profitability.

Investigation Of Pilots' Visual Entropy And Eye Fixations For Simulated Flights Consisted Of Multiple Take-Offs And Landings, Salem M. Naeeri, Ziho Kang, Ricardo Palma Fraga
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Eye movement characteristics might provide insights on pilots' mental fatigue during prolonged flight. The visual entropy, eye fixation numbers, and eye fixation durations of ten novice pilots and ten expert pilots were analyzed for a four-hour simulated flight task consisting of four consecutive flight legs. Each flight leg lasted approximately one hour and contained five flight phases: takeoff, climb, cruise, descend, and landing. The pilots maneuvered the simulated B-52 aircraft following instrument flight rules (IFR) in a moderate-fidelity Microsoft Flight Simulator environment. Our results indicate that experts’ eye movement characteristics were significantly different from those of novices. In detail, novices' …
School Choice Factors Influencing U.S. Domestic And International Student Pilots’ Selections Of Vocational Flight Schools, Jingmin Jin
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
As international civil aviation activities resume from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with fleet growth and high retirement rates for senior pilots, there is a concern about the industry’s capability in supplying sufficient numbers of competent professional pilots. In order to advance the industry’s recruitment, it is necessary to determine effective approaches that may attract prospective student pilots to flight schools. This study investigated how school choice factors influenced U.S. domestic student pilots’ selections of vocational, non-collegiate flight schools in comparison to international student pilots. The study data were adopted from a 2019 survey research, which included 157 domestic and 44 …

“You’Ll Never Really Be One Of Us”: Women’S Underrepresentation In The Aviation Workforce, Rebecca K. Lutte, Shannon M. Morrison
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Women are underrepresented in many aviation occupations despite outreach and recruitment efforts from multiple organizations. Attracting women into aviation is a necessity not only to address workforce demand but also to achieve the benefits of a more diverse workforce to include enhanced profitability, safety, and innovation. To address the gender gap, the research presented here attempts to inform recruitment/retention strategies by identifying both the positive and negative factors that influence a woman’s decision to pursue a career in aviation and the decision to persist. Additionally, factors such as participation in youth outreach programs, role of mentors, influencers who support or …
An Analysis Of The Effect Of Self-Efficacy Of Female Students In Collegiate Flight Programs, Stefanie Horton, Mallory K. Casebolt
An Analysis Of The Effect Of Self-Efficacy Of Female Students In Collegiate Flight Programs, Stefanie Horton, Mallory K. Casebolt
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of self-efficacy of male and female students in collegiate flight programs to identify if a relationship exists between self-efficacy responses and gender representation in aviation. Self-efficacy, an element of social cognitive career theory’s (SCCT) behavioral factors, deals with an individual’s belief in his/her capacity to address a certain set of circumstances. No studies have been found addressing self-efficacy of students enrolled in collegiate aviation programs, specifically addressing differences between male and female students. The population for this study consisted of students enrolled in four-year collegiate aviation programs, as found through …

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual (Lgbt) U.S. Latinx Catholics And The U.S. Catholic Church: A Critique Of Certain Aspects Of Roman Catholic Moral Teaching In Light Of A Latinx Theological Anthropology, Leonardo Daniel Mendoza
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This Capstone Research Project aims to address the certain aspects of Roman Catholic moral teaching. Throughout this project I argue that when it comes to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual and Queer (LGBTQ+) Catholics, the moral teaching is essentially corrupt. This paper begins by providing an overview of current Catholic teaching relevant to LGBTQ+ persons. In the second section I focus on the lived experience on the Latinx LGBTQ+ community in the United States to demonstrate several flaws in Catholic moral tradition. I place a special emphasis on the Latinx LGBTQ+ community in Florida as I base my argument on …
An Instructional Framework To Building Comprehension And Engagement Through Dialogic And Metacognitive Inquiry, Alicia Eileen Wells
An Instructional Framework To Building Comprehension And Engagement Through Dialogic And Metacognitive Inquiry, Alicia Eileen Wells
Masters Projects
The highly Anglicized cannon of literature found in American high schools, combined with an antiquated and oversimplified literacy pedagogy, is leaving students disengaged and lacking a nuanced understanding of the literature. Consequently, intermediate and novice learners fail to develop proficient comprehension of assigned materials. This is due to two significant problems: (1) a lack of culturally relevant pedagogy and cultural responsiveness, and (2) a lack of historical, social, and cultural schema. By examining and connecting sociocultural theory, reader response theory, and schema theory, this project will create an instructional framework to facilitate student engagement within an English language arts classroom. …

A Reconceptualization Of Website Accessibility Under The Ada: Resolving The Inter-Circuit Conflict Post-Pandemic, Lazar, Jonathan, Ferleger, David
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
The federal circuit courts of appeals are in conflict over whether Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act requires public accommodations’ websites to be accessible to people with disabilities. Some courts consider websites themselves to be a covered “place of public accommodation.” Others conclude that websites are not covered at all. The predominant view is that a website must be accessible if it has a “nexus” to a physical public location. However, the “nexus” requirement has been problematic from the start and its weaknesses have been particularly exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic exposes a deep mismatch between …

The Papers Of Clarence Mitchell Jr., Volume V : The Struggle To Pass The 1957 Civil Rights Act, 1955–1958, Clarence Mitchell Jr., Denton L. Watson
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Volume V of The Papers of Clarence Mitchell Jr. records the successful effort to pass the 1957 Civil Rights Act: the first federal civil rights legislation since 1875.
Prior to the US Supreme Court’s landmark 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the NAACP had faced an impenetrable wall of opposition from southerners in Congress. Basing their assertions on the court’s 1896 “separate but equal” decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, legislators from the South maintained that their Jim Crow system was nondiscriminatory and thus constitutional. In their view, further civil rights laws were unnecessary. In ruling that legally mandated …

Males exhibit higher incidence and worse prognosis for the majority of cancers, including glioblastoma (GBM). Disparate survival may be related to sex-biased responses to treatment, including radiation. Using a mouse model of GBM, we show that female cells are more sensitive to radiation, and that senescence represents a major component of the radiation therapeutic response in both sexes. Correlation analyses revealed that the CDK inhibitor p21 and irradiation induced senescence were differentially regulated between male and female cells. Indeed, female cellular senescence was more sensitive to changes in p21 levels, a finding that was observed in wildtype and transformed murine …

The problem of energy scarcity has reached a global scale as a result of the majority of energy production relying on non-renewable sources of energy. Solar photovoltaic cells use the photovoltaic effect to convert solar energy into electrical energy. Solar energy can reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) associated with the generation from fossil fuels as the only CO2 emissions are those embodied in their manufacture. A 268.8 m2 area roof-top grid-connected PV system with a total capacity of 49.92kWp was installed at Warrenpoint (54.11oN and 6.26oW) in Ireland. 192 “Renesola” …

Vibrating Flexoelectric Micro-Beams As Angular Rate Sensors, Yilin Qu, Feng Jin, Jiashi S. Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We studied flexoelectrically excited/detected bending vibrations in perpendicular directions of a micro-beam spinning about its axis. A set of one-dimensional equations was derived and used in a theoretical analysis. It is shown that the Coriolis effect associated with the spin produces an electrical output proportional to the angular rate of the spin when it is small. Thus, the beam can be used as a gyroscope for angular rate sensing. Compared to conventional piezoelectric beam gyroscopes, the flexoelectric beam proposed and analyzed has a simpler structure.

Status Of Customer Relationship Management Activities In University Libraries Of Pakistan, Mir Bahader
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study purpose is to assess the current status of customer relationship management (CRM) activities (customer satisfaction activities and communications strategies & practices) in academic libraries in Pakistan and also focused on CRM activities that correlate with universities' demographic variables (types, locations, and category). This study adopted a correlational research design with a survey method based on quantitative data collection. A structured questionnaire was distributed among all head/in-charge librarians of universities/DAIs in Pakistan. This study found that majority of the customer satisfaction activities were in the “planning” stage while few activities were “currently doing” by the libraries. Similarly, the …
