Classroom Versus Online Team-Based Learning: Effects On Students’ Learning And Performance, Jennifer A. Cleland, Kian Bee Ng, Jerome I. Rotgans

Health Professions Education

Purpose. To date, we know little about the impact of responsive shifts from conventional to remote learning during the Covid-19 pandemic on student outcomes. If learning suffered, this may potentially have significant negative effects on students’ knowledge and skills acquisition hence eventually impacting the overall quality of our doctors and the care they provide. To address this gap in knowledge, we investigated the impact of switching from classroom team-based learning (cTBL) to online TBL (oTBL) on medical student performance in class tests and end-of-year examinations. Methods. Our participants were 137 second-year medical students who had cTBL experience prior to the …

Review Article On Advanced Polymers Used In Gastroretentive Drug Delivery Systems (Gdds), Firas Aziz Rahi

Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences

Conventional dosage forms could not manage release of active substances resulting in reduced bioavailability and side reactions. Being retained in a certain site in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) could achieve further bioavailability particularly regarding drugs having low gastric absorption and low solubilization or less stability at elevated pH. Therefore, Gastroretentive drug delivery systems (GDDS) are unique approaches with gastric retention and controlling the release rate for maximizing the efficacy. The polymers broadly applied in GDDS are mainly of two sorts, natural and synthetic, according to their nature. Synthetic polymers such as Hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC), Eudragit and Ethylcellulose while natural polymers …

Comparison Of Routine Health Screening Rates Between Two Emr Systems, Lauren M. Cancio, Caleb J. Berta Aug 2022

Comparison Of Routine Health Screening Rates Between Two Emr Systems, Lauren M. Cancio, Caleb J. Berta

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

An EMR, electronic medical record, system refers to the software widely adopted by medical practitioners to reduce the use of hard-copy files, and improve the documentation, storage, and retrieval of patient information. Some EMR systems can generate automatic alerts reminding providers when patients are due for certain preventive services or meet the criteria for various screening measures. Epic, one of the leading EMR systems in use today, contains this additional feature. The screening recommendations built into Epic are derived from a committee of USPSTF, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, medical experts whose focus is to improve patient health across the …

Computational Tools To Expedite The Identification Of Potential Pxr Modulators In Complex Natural Product Mixtures: A Case Study With Five Closely Related Licorice Species, Manal Alhusban, Pankaj Pandey, Jongmin Ahn, Bharathi Avula

Faculty and Student Publications

The genus Glycyrrhiza, comprising approximately 36 spp., possesses complex structural diversity and is documented to possess a wide spectrum of biological activities. Understanding and finding the mechanisms of efficacy or safety for a plant-based therapy is very challenging, yet it is crucial and necessary to understand the polypharmacology of traditional medicines. Licorice extract was shown to modulate the xenobiotic receptors, which might manifest as a potential route for natural product-induced drug interactions. However, different mechanisms could be involved in this phenomenon. Since the induced herb-drug interaction of licorice supplements via Pregnane X receptor (PXR) is understudied, we ventured out to …

Abstract for Beta Thalassemia Poster Project

Beta Thalassemia is a highly prevalent inherited disease that has the ability to cause symptoms where a patient can present asymptomatic to severe life-threatening conditions. The drive behind researching this topic was regarding my husband and the journey to getting a diagnosis for his unknown problems. Diagnosis can occur from birth into middle adulthood. The milder cases tend to be diagnosed in adulthood. There are new innovative ways to help combat symptoms of beta thalassemia, however, there has not been one successful solution for a cure except very specific bone marrow transplantation. This also …

Review Of Madeleine L.H. Campbell's Animals, Ethics And Us, Teddy Duncan Jr. Aug 2022

Review Of Madeleine L.H. Campbell's Animals, Ethics And Us, Teddy Duncan Jr.

Between the Species

In Animals, Ethics, and Us, Dr. Madeleine L.H. Campbell offers insight into the moral landscape of human-animal relations through a specific ethical framework that rejects the rights of non-human animals, opting instead for a “qualified utilitarian approach” (2019, 9). For Campbell, animal ethics should not be bound to animal rights or the autonomy of individual animals; she asserts that animal rights should not factor into the moral consideration of animals at all. Since she does not confer animals a moral status or form of rights and instead relies on the utilitarian approach, Campbell attempts to locate the justifying logic …

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Endogenous biomolecules and soft tissues are known to persist in the fossil record. To date, these discoveries derive from a limited number of preservational environments, (e.g., fluvial channels and floodplains), and fossils from less common depositional environments have been largely unexplored. We conducted paleomolecular analyses of shallow marine vertebrate fossils from the Cretaceous-Paleogene Hornerstown Formation, an 80-90% glauconitic greensand from Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park in Mantua Township, NJ. Twelve samples were demineralized and found to yield products morphologically consistent with vertebrate osteocytes, blood vessels, and bone matrix. Specimens from these deposits that are dark in color exhibit excellent …

No. 03: Covid-19, The Hukou System And Migrant Food Security In Urban China, Fei Xu, Taiyang Zhong, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The COVID-19 pandemic has issued significant challenges to food systems and the food security of urban and mobile populations. COVID-19 has had a disproportionate negative impact on household food security. In China, there have been no studies to date specifically focusing on the food security of migrants during the pandemic. This paper uses data from an online questionnaire survey of food security in Nanjing City, China, conducted in March 2020 to examine the different experiences of migrant and non-migrant households. The paper situates the research findings in the general literature on the migrant experience more generally during the pandemic and …
