Black Panhellenic Sorority Member Experience At The University Of San Diego: Finding A Sense Of Belonging & Support, Kayla A. Wilkins Aug 2022

Black Panhellenic Sorority Member Experience At The University Of San Diego: Finding A Sense Of Belonging & Support, Kayla A. Wilkins

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

The purpose of this Action Research project was to learn more about the experiences of Black current and alumni members of Panhellenic sororities. My study explored their experiences within Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) as a whole, as well as how they have navigated being in predominantly white spaces at the University of San Diego. One of the main problems discussed was how some chapters do not know what support looks like for Black identified members. Members completed a brief survey and participated in an individual interview and discussed their sorority experience at USD. During this project, I learned from …

A Multi-Dimensional Matrix Pencil-Based Channel Prediction Method For Massive Mimo With Mobility, Weidong Li, Haifan Yin, Ziao Qin, Yandi Cao, Mérouane Debbah Aug 2022

A Multi-Dimensional Matrix Pencil-Based Channel Prediction Method For Massive Mimo With Mobility, Weidong Li, Haifan Yin, Ziao Qin, Yandi Cao, Mérouane Debbah

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the mobility problem in massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, which leads to significant performance losses in the practical deployment of the fifth generation mobile communication networks. We propose a novel channel prediction method based on multi-dimensional matrix pencil (MDMP), which estimates the path parameters by exploiting the angular-frequency-domain and angular-timedomain structures of the wideband channel. The MDMP method also entails a novel path pairing scheme to pair the delay and Doppler, based on the super-resolution property of the angle estimation. Our method is able to deal with the realistic constraint of time-varying path delays introduced by user movements, …

Agent-Based Models For Climate Change Adaptation In Coastal Zones. A Review, Ilenia Di Noia Aug 2022

Agent-Based Models For Climate Change Adaptation In Coastal Zones. A Review, Ilenia Di Noia

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Worldwide, with different frequencies and magnitudes, coastlines are increasingly being affected by climate change hazards. The high urbanization rate, due to economic opportunities and natural amenities, further exacerbates vulnerabilities in these areas, requiring prompt and effective adaptation to climate induced events –from gradual sea level rise to abrupt storms and floods. The ability of different actors (households, firms, financial entities and Government) to cope with such events can be addressed and studied through the use of agent-based models, which allow for an heterogeneous treatment of agents’ behaviour, from individual risk perceptions’ modelling to decision-making rules on the adaptation option to …

Pneumothorax, Jennifer Wenger Aug 2022

Pneumothorax, Jennifer Wenger

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Pneumothorax is the presence of air or gas in the pleural space caused by rupture in the visceral pleura of the parietal pleura and chest wall. A pneumothorax is the most common thoracic disease affecting adolescence and young adults. There are several types of pneumothoraxes including spontaneous pneumothorax caused by the rupture of a bleb, usually in relatively healthily individuals. Secondary pneumothoraxes are cause by trauma or diseases. Penetrating/ blunt trauma, surgical intervention, COPD/emphysema, and mechanical ventilation are all risk factors associated with secondary pneumothorax. Common symptoms are sharp chest pains on inspiration, shortness of breath and tachypnea. Is some …

Validating And Testing An Agent-Based Model For The Spread Of Covid-19 In Ireland, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher Aug 2022

Validating And Testing An Agent-Based Model For The Spread Of Covid-19 In Ireland, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher

Articles

Agent-based models can be used to better understand the impacts of lifting restrictions or implementing interventions during a pandemic. However, agent-based models are computationally expensive, and running a model of a large population can result in a simulation taking too long to run for the model to be a useful analysis tool during a public health crisis. To reduce computing time and power while running a detailed agent-based model for the spread of COVID-19 in the Republic of Ireland, we introduce a scaling factor that equates 1 agent to 100 people in the population. We present the results from model …

Brenno Blauth’S Compositional Style Elements: A Study On The Sonata For Flute And Piano, T.5., Thiago Bohm Bottega

Dissertations

The Sonata para Flauta e Piano, T.5, by Brenno Blauth (1931-1993), is a standard of the Brazilian flute repertoire. This document studies its folk and Brazilian popular music elements in order to better understand Blauth’s compositional rationale.

In 1959 Blauth was responsible for the creation of the group Movimento Musical Renovador. Based in Rio de Janeiro, MMR gathered renowned composers and performers with the goal of promoting Brazilian classical music. Chapter III is dedicated to the group’s initiatives, taking its political and cultural contextualization into account.

Chapter IV is dedicated to the study of Blauth’s compositional style shifts …

Ketamine Use For Prehospital Status Seizures That Are Refractory To Benzodiazepines, Kyle B. Safko, Justin Gambini Aug 2022

Ketamine Use For Prehospital Status Seizures That Are Refractory To Benzodiazepines, Kyle B. Safko, Justin Gambini

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

In North America, epilepsy affects between 16 and 51 people 100,000, with the most affected being those with lower socioeconomic status1. Most ambulance services carry benzodiazepines, but what happens if administration of these drugs do not terminate seizure activity? The American Epilepsy Society concluded that 50% of patients do not respond to benzodiazepines if they have been stable and compliant on typical antiepileptic drugs and they experience a seizure7. A literature review was done looking at alternative treatment options for status seizures, specifically ketamine administration. Multiple case reviews, literature reviews and retrospective studies demonstrate the effectiveness …

An Exploration Of Rock-Climbing Based Counseling Interventions, Leeann Wilcox Aug 2022

An Exploration Of Rock-Climbing Based Counseling Interventions, Leeann Wilcox

Counselor Education Capstones

Rock-climbing can be successfully combined with counseling interventions and may be healing for a variety of mental health concerns. This review identifies several areas in mental health counseling which can be addressed by adding rock-climbing-based counseling interventions. These include depression, trauma, building self-efficacy, and providing skills practice. These two fields fill important gaps in each other’s shortcomings. Rock climbing offers what counseling lacks in the form of a body focused physical activity aspect of intervention. In a similar way, counseling offers a code of ethics, multicultural focus, and an emphasis on the best interest of clients to an activity which …

Zero Balancing With The Dizzy Client, Mary L. Behrens, P.T., Czb Aug 2022

Zero Balancing With The Dizzy Client, Mary L. Behrens, P.T., Czb

Journal of Transformative Touch

“Dizziness” is a colloquial term for the general experience individuals associate with a variety of problems with the vestibular system. Because “dizziness” is a general description of a symptom that may have a range of causes, seeking care from various medical specialists, the root problem is often missed, potentially leaving clients suffering for years. Over the last 10 years of clinical practice, I have found Zero Balancing to be an effective treatment for many clients referred for vestibular disorders.

The goal of this paper is to shed light on the reasons for my clinical decision making and understand the patterns …

Three Dimensions Of Association Link Migraine Symptoms And Functional Connectivity, Samuel R. Krimmel, Danielle D. Desouza, Michael L. Keaser, Bharati M. Sanjanwala, Robert P. Cowan, Martin A. Lindquist, Jennifer A. Haythornthwaite, David A. Seminowicz

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Migraine is a heterogeneous disorder with variable symptoms and responsiveness to therapy. Because of previous analytic shortcomings, variance in migraine symptoms has been inconsistently related to brain function. In the current analysis, we used data from two sites (n = 143, male and female humans), and performed canonical correlation analysis, relating restingstate functional connectivity (RSFC) with a broad range of migraine symptoms, ranging from headache characteristics to sleep abnormalities. This identified three dimensions of covariance between symptoms and RSFC. The first dimension related to headache intensity, headache frequency, pain catastrophizing, affect, sleep disturbances, and somatic abnormalities, and was associated with …

Coverage Impacts Of Work Requirements From The Arkansas Medicaid Program, Brett D. Huettner Aug 2022

Coverage Impacts Of Work Requirements From The Arkansas Medicaid Program, Brett D. Huettner

ETD Archive

I examine changes in Medicaid coverage and insurance status surrounding a work requirement policy implemented within the Arkansas Medicaid demonstration waiver. The policy applied to able-bodied, childless adults, aged 30 to 49, not enrolled as students, and was effective from 2018 to 2019. Eligibility was conditional on policy compliance. Taking a sample from the IPUMS American Community Survey database, I use triple-differences modeling to compare Arkansans subject to the policy with unaffected Arkansans and individuals from a set of control states. I find that the policy pilot group in Arkansas was less likely to be insured or have Medicaid coverage …

Level Down To Level Up: The Impact Of Item-Level Description On Finding Aid Discoverability, Paul Daybell, Andrea Payant, Becky Skeen, Liz Woolcott

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Utah State University Libraries Cataloging and Metadata Services unit investigated the discoverability of local Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids using different levels of description. The research team created two nearly identical versions of the same finding aid for five collections and posted them online. The only difference in the finding aids was the level to which the collection contents were described. For each collection, one version of the finding aid was described at the file (box or folder) level and the other version was described at the item level. Over a year later the team pulled the analytics for …

A New Implementation Of Federated Learning For Privacy And Security Enhancement, Xiang Ma, Haijian Sun, Rose Qingyang Hu, Yi Qian Aug 2022

A New Implementation Of Federated Learning For Privacy And Security Enhancement, Xiang Ma, Haijian Sun, Rose Qingyang Hu, Yi Qian

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the ever-increasing concerns on personal data privacy and the rapidly growing data volume at local clients, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a new machine learning setting. An FL system is comprised of a central parameter server and multiple local clients. It keeps data at local clients and learns a centralized model by sharing the model parameters learned locally. No local data needs to be shared, and privacy can be well protected. Nevertheless, since it is the model instead of the raw data that is shared, the system can be exposed to the poisoning model attacks launched by …

Developing Coping Strategies For Early Elementary Students In Relation To Anxiety, Kayle M. Ogrodzinski Aug 2022

Developing Coping Strategies For Early Elementary Students In Relation To Anxiety, Kayle M. Ogrodzinski

Masters Theses

There has been a growing concern about the number of students exhibiting anxiety in schools. Research shows that implementing interventions can help reduce the amount anxiety in students. School counselors can implement small group lessons with a focus on a theoretical approach using cognitive behavioral therapy to help address this concern. This method allows the student to be in control of their feeling and learn to cope with what is making them anxious. This project acts as a guide for school counselors to implement small group lessons. It provides an outline of seven weekly sessions for students in early elementary …
