The Association Of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility And Client Experiences And Outcomes In Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis, Lisa Michelle Scott Aug 2022

The Association Of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility And Client Experiences And Outcomes In Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis, Lisa Michelle Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Psychotherapist multicultural competence has been given increasing attention in the field of psychology since the 1970s. However, individuals and communities who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color are still less likely to attend psychotherapy and often drop out earlier than White clients. These trends highlight the importance of the ongoing research on therapist multicultural competence. There are many multicultural competencies, however, the current study focuses on therapist cultural humility. Specifically, we systematically searched all the current research on the association between cultural humility and client experiences and outcomes in therapy. Our literature search yielded eight studies that met our …

Effects Of A High School Yoga Program On Student-Reported Stress, Resilience, And Academic Outcomes, Stephanie Martha Vance Aug 2022

Effects Of A High School Yoga Program On Student-Reported Stress, Resilience, And Academic Outcomes, Stephanie Martha Vance

Theses and Dissertations

High school yoga programs are gaining popularity throughout the United States. The many perceived benefits of such programs among adolescent groups have shown promising outcomes. This mixed-method evaluation of a high school yoga program aims to evaluate the effects of the program on student-reported stress, resilience, and academic outcomes. Program participants include high school students in yoga classes (n = 61) and comparison classes (n = 37), who completed pre- and post-measure surveys along with social validity measures. Overall findings showed a decrease in stress levels among yoga students compared to comparison students, which approached statistical significance, no significant differences …

To What Degree Does Martial Quality Predict Longevity? A Meta-Analysis Of Prospective Studies, Rachel E. Jensen Aug 2022

To What Degree Does Martial Quality Predict Longevity? A Meta-Analysis Of Prospective Studies, Rachel E. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Strong social relationships consistently predict the quality of both physical and mental health. Society commonly recognizes the marriage relationship as one of the most committed, enduring relationships. While marital status alone can strongly predict health, it appears that moderating factors exist in this association. The quality of one's marriage can have a greater effect on health than marital status alone. We conducted a meta-analysis examining the strength of the influence that marital quality has on physical health, specifically indicated by mortality rates. To identify relevant articles, we searched multiple online databases (Embase, Psycinfo, Family and Society Studies Worldwide, and Academic …

Dissertations

Predictive genetic testing for Huntington's disease (HD) and hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) is a relatively new medical test. Research to date, has focused on: (1) the psychological impact of genetic testing, (2) disclosing of results, (3) the impact of genetic testing on HD families, and (4) individual's assessment of risk. The purpose of this study was to examine how individuals experience predictive genetic testing for HD and HBOC and what impact that experience has on individuals and family members. A grounded theory study design employing in-depth interviewing, theoretical sampling, and dimensional analysis was performed. Interviews with 29 participants …

Geochemical Characterization Of The Bone Spring Formation, Delaware Basin, Using Chemostratigraphy And Integrated Petrophysics, David Tonner Aug 2022

Geochemical Characterization Of The Bone Spring Formation, Delaware Basin, Using Chemostratigraphy And Integrated Petrophysics, David Tonner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Delaware Basin forms part of West Texas's and New Mexico’s famous petroleum-generating Permian Basin. The Bone Spring Formation is a prolific hydrocarbon producer within this basin, creating one of the world’s richest oil shales. This formation has lithological sequences that are characterized by repeating carbonate and siliciclastic intervals of a third-order cycle which can largely be correlated to highstand and lowstand systems tracts, respectively. Lithological complexity and facies change are manifested by debris flows, turbidites, and slumps. In addition to glacio-eustasy, both tectonism and broader Milankovitch cycles have influenced the depositional history. Previous investigations have utilized cores and wireline …

C3ar Plays Both Sides In Regulating Resistance To Bacterial Infections, Jesse A. Corcoran, Brooke A. Napier Aug 2022

C3ar Plays Both Sides In Regulating Resistance To Bacterial Infections, Jesse A. Corcoran, Brooke A. Napier

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Activation of the complement pathway results in the production of bioactive C3a, a product of C3 cleavage, which interacts with membrane-bound receptor C3aR to regulate innate immune cell function and outcome of bacterial infection. Specifically, previous research has identified mechanistically distinct and cell type–specific roles for C3aR in regulating innate immune cell inflammatory state, antimicrobial killing capacity, and metabolism. Historically, the production of C3a has been relegated to the serum; however, recent studies have provided evidence that various cell types can produce intracellular C3a that stimulates intracellular C3aR. In light of these new results, it is imperative that we revisit …

Bittersweet Experiences For Brazilian Newcomers: Positive Interactions, Microaggressions, And Isolation In English-Only And Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Rose Renee Whitney Aug 2022

Bittersweet Experiences For Brazilian Newcomers: Positive Interactions, Microaggressions, And Isolation In English-Only And Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Rose Renee Whitney

Theses and Dissertations

With the rise of the number of immigrant children in schools across the U.S., education research has directed its attention to understanding these newcomers' social experiences at school. Though Brazilian immigrant populations are growing, research on their unique social experiences remains limited. Grounded in critical sociocultural theory, this interpretive phenomenological study shares the social experiences of four Brazilian newcomers in elementary school. Participants were adolescents who had immigrated to the U.S. as children and attended English-only and/or Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) programs. As adolescents, participants were able to look back on their experiences as a newcomer in elementary school …

The Role Of Social Response To Disclosure In Relgious And Spiritual Coping And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Megan Wolfe Aug 2022

The Role Of Social Response To Disclosure In Relgious And Spiritual Coping And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Megan Wolfe

Theses and Dissertations

Many factors can discourage survivors of sexual assault from reporting their assaults. Even those survivors who disclose, their reporting experiences may not leave them feeling empowered or that they have received adequate support to begin the healing process after disclosure. Using a mixed methods approach, we examined the relationship between religious and spiritual coping strategies, the experience of social disclosure, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). We further used qualitative data examining the ways that participants used religious/spiritual coping strategies in response to the trauma of sexual …

Interference Between Speaking And Computer Tasks And Their Effects On Physiologic Arousal, Tiana Walker Bateman Aug 2022

Interference Between Speaking And Computer Tasks And Their Effects On Physiologic Arousal, Tiana Walker Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of concurrent speech and computer tasks on each other and on measures of physiologic arousal in 30 young adults. Physiologic measures included galvanic skin response, heart rate, and heart rate variability. Participants completed a speech-only task, two computer-based tasks, and combined speech and computer-based tasks. Participants spoke for 60 seconds on a procedural discourse prompt. Acoustic measures included the mean and standard deviation of intensity and fundamental frequency as indices of prosody, speaking time ratio to reflect pausing, and speech rate. The primary computer task (with two levels of difficulty) involved making formatting changes to …

Mirror Symmetry For Some Non-Abelian Groups, Kyle John Niendorf Aug 2022

Mirror Symmetry For Some Non-Abelian Groups, Kyle John Niendorf

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to investigate a conjecture about Mirror Symmetry for Landau Ginzburg (LG) models with non-abelian gauge groups. The conjecture predicts that the LG A-model for a polynomial-group pair $(W,G)$ is equivalent to the LG B-model for the dual pair $(W^*, G^*)$. In particular, the A-model and B-model include the construction of a Frobenius algebra. The LG mirror symmetry conjecture predicts that the A-model Frobenius algebra for $(W,G)$ will be isomorphic to the B-model Frobenius algebra for the dual pair $(W^*,G^*)$. Part of the conjecture includes a rule describing how to construct the dual pair. Until …

Designing, Implementing, And Evaluating A Unit That Utilizes Effective History Teaching Practices, Haley Holland Aug 2022

Designing, Implementing, And Evaluating A Unit That Utilizes Effective History Teaching Practices, Haley Holland

Theses and Dissertations

Because elementary teachers are viewed as subject-matter generalists who are not specialized in teaching history, this qualitative action research project explored my practice as I designed, implemented, and evaluated a unit that utilized effective history teaching practices. The study took place in my fourth-grade classroom which resides in the Intermountain West. The data was analyzed with Cochran-Smith and Lytle's (1999) three types of knowledge as a priori codes. Inductive processes were then used to find patterns and themes. The study found that designing this unit involved engaging in historical practices and using traditional lesson planning techniques. Further, implementing the study …

Breast cancer is more common on the left side than the right side. We aim to evaluate differences in clinicopathological and genomic characteristics based on laterality. We analyzed survival outcomes and clinical characteristics of 881,320 patients recorded by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was used to explore genomic and clinical features from 1,062 patients. Gene expression data was used to quantitate cytolytic activity and hallmark gene-sets were used for gene set enrichment analysis. An institutional retrospective review was conducted on 155 patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). Patient characteristics were summarized by …

Glycan Shield Of The Ebolavirus Envelope Glycoprotein Gp, Weiwei Peng, Vamseedhar Rayaprolu, Amar D Parvate, Matti F Pronker, Sean Hui, Diptiben Parekh, Kelly Shaffer, Xiaoying Yu, Erica O Saphire, Joost Snijder Aug 2022

Glycan Shield Of The Ebolavirus Envelope Glycoprotein Gp, Weiwei Peng, Vamseedhar Rayaprolu, Amar D Parvate, Matti F Pronker, Sean Hui, Diptiben Parekh, Kelly Shaffer, Xiaoying Yu, Erica O Saphire, Joost Snijder

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The envelope glycoprotein GP of the ebolaviruses is essential for host cell entry and the primary target of the host antibody response. GP is heavily glycosylated with up to 17 N-linked sites, numerous O-linked glycans in its disordered mucin-like domain (MLD), and three predicted C-linked mannosylation sites. Glycosylation is important for host cell attachment, GP stability and fusion activity, and shielding from neutralization by serum antibodies. Here, we use glycoproteomics to profile the site-specific glycosylation patterns of ebolavirus GP. We detect up to 16 unique O-linked glycosylation sites in the MLD, and two O-linked sites in the receptor-binding GP1 subunit. …

Maturation And Substrate Processing Topography Of The Plasmodium Falciparum Invasion/Egress Protease Plasmepsin X, Sumit Mukherjee, Suong Nguyen, Eashan Sharma, Daniel E Goldberg Aug 2022

Maturation And Substrate Processing Topography Of The Plasmodium Falciparum Invasion/Egress Protease Plasmepsin X, Sumit Mukherjee, Suong Nguyen, Eashan Sharma, Daniel E Goldberg

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The malaria parasite Plasmodium invades a host erythrocyte, multiplies within a parasitophorous vacuole (PV) and then ruptures the PV and erythrocyte membranes in a process known as egress. Both egress and invasion are controlled by effector proteins discharged from specialized secretory organelles. The aspartic protease plasmepsin X (PM X) regulates activity for many of these effectors, but it is unclear how PM X accesses its diverse substrates that reside in different organelles. PM X also autoprocesses to generate different isoforms. The function of this processing is not understood. We have mapped the self-cleavage sites and have constructed parasites with cleavage …

A major challenge of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) is to translate phenotypic associations into biological insights. Here, we integrate a large GWAS on blood lipids involving 1.6 million individuals from five ancestries with a wide array of functional genomic datasets to discover regulatory mechanisms underlying lipid associations. We first prioritize lipid-associated genes with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) colocalizations and then add chromatin interaction data to narrow the search for functional genes. Polygenic enrichment analysis across 697 annotations from a host of tissues and cell types confirms the central role of the liver in lipid levels and highlights the selective …

Bioengineering Tools Applied To Dentistry: Validation Methods For In Vitro And In Silico Analysis

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This study aimed to evaluate the use of bioengineering tools, finite element analysis, strain gauge analysis, photoelastic analysis, and digital image correlation, in computational studies with greater validity and reproducibility. A bibliographic search was performed in the main health databases PUBMED and Scholar Google, in which different studies, among them, laboratory studies, case reports, systematic reviews, and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals, were included. Therefore, articles that did not deal with the use of finite element analysis, strain gauge analysis, photoelastic analysis, and digital image correlation were excluded, as well as their use in computational studies with …

A Primer On The Factories Of The Future, Noble Anumbe, Clint Saidy, Ramy Harik Aug 2022

A Primer On The Factories Of The Future, Noble Anumbe, Clint Saidy, Ramy Harik

Faculty Publications

In a dynamic and rapidly changing world, customers’ often conflicting demands have continued to evolve, outstripping the ability of the traditional factory to address modern-day production challenges. To fix these challenges, several manufacturing paradigms have been proposed. Some of these have monikers such as the smart factory, intelligent factory, digital factory, and cloud-based factory. Due to a lack of consensus on general nomenclature, the term Factory of the Future (or Future Factory) has been used in this paper as a collective euphemism for these paradigms. The Factory of the Future constitutes a creative convergence of multiple technologies, techniques, and capabilities …

Long-Term Soil Fungal Community Recovery After Fire Is Impacted By Climate Change, Spencer Mcgee, Alyssa Tidwell, Erin Riggs, Hannah Veltkamp, Geoffrey Zahn Aug 2022

Long-Term Soil Fungal Community Recovery After Fire Is Impacted By Climate Change, Spencer Mcgee, Alyssa Tidwell, Erin Riggs, Hannah Veltkamp, Geoffrey Zahn

Western North American Naturalist

Though much is known about fungal importance to forest health, there is very little information about factors that impact recovery times of soil fungal communities after a fire. Soil samples were taken from burn sites within one ecotype of temperate coniferous forest in Utah over a 20-year chronosequence. Sites were selected from available historic burns and were similar in plant community structure, elevation, slope, and aspect. Fungal DNA from these samples was compared to soil from paired unburned sites nearby to measure community similarity and estimate soil fungal recovery rates. Differences between paired burned and unburned sites remained fairly stable …

Rare Genetic Variants Explain Missing Heritability In Smoking, Seon-Kyeong Jang, Luke Evans, Allison Fialkowski, Donna K. Arnett, Allison E. Ashley-Koch, Kathleen C. Barnes, Diane M. Becker, Joshua C. Bis, John Blangero, Eugene R. Bleecker

School of Medicine Publications

Common genetic variants explain less variation in complex phenotypes than inferred from family-based studies, and there is a debate on the source of this ‘missing heritability’. We investigated the contribution of rare genetic variants to tobacco use with whole-genome sequences from up to 26,257 unrelated individuals of European ancestries and 11,743 individuals of African ancestries. Across four smoking traits, single-nucleotide-polymorphism-based heritability (h2SNP) was estimated from 0.13 to 0.28 (s.e., 0.10–0.13) in European ancestries, with 35–74% of it attributable to rare variants with minor allele frequencies between 0.01% and 1%. These heritability estimates are 1.5–4 times higher than past estimates based …

Anticipating Infection: How Parasitism Risk Changes Animal Physiology, Patricia C. Lopes Aug 2022

Anticipating Infection: How Parasitism Risk Changes Animal Physiology, Patricia C. Lopes

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

  1. Uninfected animals can attempt to prevent parasitism in many ways. Behavioural avoidance of parasitized conspecifics, for instance, is documented in several species.
  2. Interactions with parasitized conspecifics can also, however, lead to physiological changes in uninfected animals, an effect that is much less well studied, and consequently, less well understood. The way in which exposure to parasitism risk changes the physiology of uninfected animals and the impacts of those changes on animal fitness remain a significant gap in knowledge.
  3. Determining how the disease environment experienced by animals impacts their physiology, survival and reproduction has major implications for our knowledge of how …

Traditional dilated ophthalmoscopy can reveal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal tear, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa, retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and retinal artery occlusion (RAO). Among these diseases, AMD and DR are the major causes of progressive vision loss, while the latter is recognized as a world-wide epidemic. Advances in retinal imaging have improved the diagnosis and management of DR and AMD. In this review article, we focus on the variable imaging modalities for accurate diagnosis, early detection, and staging of both AMD and DR. In addition, …
