This talk discusses the legal and political status of women prior to the American Revolution, followed by a discussion of their activities and mobilization in support of the American Revolution. Particular attention is paid to specific women such as Phillis Wheatley, Esther DeBerdt Reed, and the women of New Jersey who were allowed to vote under the NJ Constitution of 1776.

We examine the “problem of social change”, focusing on whether efforts should be oriented toward long-term ideals or piecemeal improvements. We analyse the trade-off between these approaches: pursuing ideals may require short-term sacrifices, while incremental changes may hinder realizing an ideal. We introduce an analytical framework for structuring thought experiments that can provide traction on these issues, and present two implementations that provide baseline insights and motivate further research. We conclude with suggestions for extending our framework in ways that can yield insights that can guide our choice of orientation.

Patients with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) have poor outcomes despite multimodal treatment with surgery, radiation, and systemic therapy. The responses to radiotherapy (RT) are mixed, and the biologic mechanisms underlying this heterogeneity in the radiation response of MPNSTs are not understood. Here, we combined bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, genome-wide CRISPR interference screens, and multiplatform molecular analysis across MPNST cells, mouse allograft models, and patients' samples to understand the mediators of the radiation response. Our data revealed that MPNSTs, but not benign plexiform neurofibromas, induced a type I IFN signature that functionally mediated the radiation response. Moreover, irradiation of …

Automated detection of complex animal behavior remains a challenge in neuroscience. Developments in computer vision have greatly advanced automated behavior detection and allow high-throughput preclinical and mechanistic studies. An integrated hardware and software solution is necessary to facilitate the adoption of these advances in the field of behavioral neurogenetics, particularly for non-computational laboratories. We have published a series of papers using an open field arena to annotate complex behaviors such as grooming, posture, and gait as well as higher-level constructs such as biological age and pain. Here, we present our integrated rodent phenotyping platform, JAX Animal Behavior System (JABS), to …

Background: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program faces a critical workforce shortage, yet little is known about the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of nutrition students and recent graduates regarding WIC career pathways, requirements, and compensation. Understanding these factors is essential to design strategies to strengthen recruitment and build a sustainable WIC workforce. Objective: To identify and describe knowledge, attitudes and beliefs on entering the WIC workforce among college nutrition and dietetics students and recent graduates. Biodiversity Between The Vines: Common, Rare, And Weedy Plants In Willamette Valley Vinyards, Nora Dunkirk, Gabriel Campbell

Vineyards in the Willamette valley are more than rows of grapes—they are living landscapes. Between the vines is a diverse community of over 1,500 plant species that support soil health, pollinators and beneficial insects, birds and other wildlife, and contribute meaningfully to the resiliency and productivity of vineyards. Among the natives are also introduced and exotic plants that compete with the native species. Every plant tells a story—together, they form a living vineyard. Here we present common, rare, and exotic weedy species of Willamette Valley vineyards along with identification tips about each species. Presented at the 2026 LIVE conference (livecertified.org).

Purpose:  Visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT) accumulation causes systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and senescent cell accumulation that are risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Visceral fat removal (VFR) improves metabolism and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines.  We hypothesized that VFR removal in AD mice would improve metabolism and cognition.

Methods:  Male and female APP^NL-F mice underwent sham or vWAT surgical resection (periovarian or epididymal and perirenal) at 4 (pre-symptomatic) and 16 (symptomatic) months of age to understand interventional and therapeutic effects, respectively.  At 18 months of age, glucose metabolism and novel object recognition (NOR) memory were assayed followed by …

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun

This article examines representations of the Modern English Speaker of Korean (MESK) in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as lexicographers listened to and documented the language of this figure over the past century. I show that, until the early twenty-first century, the most salient type of MESK was the Koreanist, a white, masculine expert on and translator of Korean, the language of a racial other. By contrast, more recent Korean entries, influenced by the global spread of hallyu, have invoked the Korea Fan, a figure that potentially unsettles longstanding ideologies of language, race, and gender. The two polyphonic films From Ground Zero (2025, produced by Rashid Masharawi) and Letters (2025, produced by Josef Khallouf) bring together, in response to the war in Gaza, unique short films, letters and chronicles that address collective questions. How do these films take charge of the urgent need to problematize, aesthetically and politically, the relationship between subjectivity and the collective? From the Palestinian enclave or neighboring Lebanon, they seek irreducible singularities and intersubjective connections in the face of the horror of genocide. Nanosecond-pulsed discharges are a promising method to enhance combustion but can generate significant levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI). Modifying the discharge pulse width is an unexplored option to reduce EMI, but few studies have examined how changing the pulse width affects discharge parameters such as energy and temperature. This study addresses this issue by systematically investigating how the pulse width affects the energy per pulse, breakdown time, rotational temperature, and vibrational temperature in air across different frequencies, flow velocities, and gap distances in a plasma-assisted flow tube. Clarence “Tom” Ashley (September 29, 1895 - June 2, 1967) was a musician from Mountain City, Tennessee. Ashley began making music at medicine shows and local fiddlers’ conventions as early as 1911. Notably, Ashley participated in the Mountain City Fiddlers Convention in May 1925, an event that is considered to have helped launch the modern country music industry by catching the attention of recording executives in the years leading up to the historic Bristol Sessions (1927-1928) and Johnson City Sessions (1928-1929). Ashley was recorded during the historic 1929 Johnson City Sessions as both a solo artist and as a member …

Background/Objectives: The relationship between clinical volume and academic performance in orthopedic surgery remains understudied. The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of high-achieving academic orthopedic surgeons in an attempt to extrapolate patterns and trends that govern the relationship between clinical performance and academia in orthopedic surgery. Methods: The 2023 National Plan and Provider Enumeration System and Medicare claims data (2021–2022) databases were used to include all active orthopedic surgeons of different subspecialties. Recovering water, nutrients, energy, and critical materials from waste streams is essential for building resilient and circular water systems. Yet many recovery technologies fail to achieve adoption or persistence beyond pilot scales because they overlook the social and institutional contexts that shape implementation. This Perspective reframes resource recovery as an adaptive challenge, i.e., one that depends as much on governance capacity, trust, and collective learning as on technical optimization. We propose a watershed- and place-based framework that situates recovery systems within the ecological and institutional boundaries where communities, infrastructure, and governance intersect.
