Markets, Agency, And Trust: Ai Agents And The Knowledge Problem, Brennan Mcdavid, Lynne Kiesling, David Chassin Mar 2026

Markets, Agency, And Trust: Ai Agents And The Knowledge Problem, Brennan Mcdavid, Lynne Kiesling, David Chassin

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming market participation, raising key epistemological questions: Do AI agents enhance or diminish the aggregation of local, private, and tacit knowledge Hayek saw as essential to market processes? How does trust in both markets and AI shape willingness to engage in AI-mediated exchange? This paper examines these issues through market epistemology, agency relationships, and trust epistemology, analyzing how agentic AI reshapes the knowledge problem and principal-agent dynamics. Applying this framework to transactive energy markets, we show that AI shifts decision-making from human cognition to algorithmic processes that require user trust despite epistemic opacity, although it is …

Investigating Confounding Factors In Shear Wave Speed Measurements Of Fibrotic Liver Tissues: A Computer Simulation Study, Emily J. Miller, Yongmei Jin, Jingfeng Jiang Mar 2026

Investigating Confounding Factors In Shear Wave Speed Measurements Of Fibrotic Liver Tissues: A Computer Simulation Study, Emily J. Miller, Yongmei Jin, Jingfeng Jiang

Michigan Tech Publications

Screening patients with liver fibrosis and identifying those at risk of developing advanced liver fibrosis is of clinical interest. Shear wave elastography (SWE), a promising non-invasive screening tool used to distinguish healthy tissue from diseased tissue, measures tissue shear wave speed (SWS) to describe tissue stiffness and identify liver fibrosis. However, considerable variations in the reported results have been found. We propose that the heterogeneity of the liver tissue background, such as the presence of fatty liver tissue and the preferred local orientation of the scarred fibrotic liver tissues embedded into the liver parenchyma, may contribute to the uncertainty in …

Dynamic Deep Prompt Optimization For Defending Against Jailbreak Attacks On Llms, Doniyorkhon Obidov, Honggang Yu, Xiaolong Guo, Kaichen Yang Mar 2026

Dynamic Deep Prompt Optimization For Defending Against Jailbreak Attacks On Llms, Doniyorkhon Obidov, Honggang Yu, Xiaolong Guo, Kaichen Yang

Michigan Tech Publications

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate impressive capabilities across many applications but remain vulnerable to jailbreak attacks, which elicit harmful or unintended content. While model fine-tuning is an option for safety alignment, it is costly and prone to catastrophic forgetting. Prompt optimization has emerged as a promising alternative, yet existing prompt-based defenses typically rely on static modifications (e.g., fixed prefixes or suffixes) that cannot adapt to diverse and evolving attacks.

We propose Dynamic Deep Prompt Optimization (DDPO), the first jailbreak defense based on deep prompt optimization. DDPO uses the target LLM’s own intermediate layers as feature extractors to dynamically generate defensive …

More Rights, More Danger For Police: An Experimental Look At How Messaging Shapes Public Views About Constitutional Carry, Hunter M. Boehme, Paige Vaughn Mar 2026

More Rights, More Danger For Police: An Experimental Look At How Messaging Shapes Public Views About Constitutional Carry, Hunter M. Boehme, Paige Vaughn

Faculty Publications

Constitutional carry (CC) laws, now enacted in 29 states, allow individuals to carry firearms openly without permits, yet little is known about public perceptions of these laws. This study employs a pre-registered survey experimental design to investigate whether varying support for CC laws by police leaders and politicians influences attitudes toward the laws and their perceived consequences. One-third of respondents supported CC laws, with most disagreeing that they will make communities safer. The majority of the sample felt these laws would increase personal liberty but also felt these laws would increase police danger. Oppositional messaging increased agreement that the laws …

Research Of Logic Elements Based On Complementary Bipolar Transistors, Nodira Batirdjanovna Alimova, Nilufar Baxtiyorovna Gulyamova Mar 2026

Research Of Logic Elements Based On Complementary Bipolar Transistors, Nodira Batirdjanovna Alimova, Nilufar Baxtiyorovna Gulyamova

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

Important parameters for any type of inverter – a NOT logic gate – are the power consumption during switching and the supply voltage. The proposed connection of complementary (two different types) bipolar transistors reduces the current consumption and supply voltage by simultaneously using the cutoff and saturation modes of the bipolar transistors. It has been theoretically and experimentally established that an inverter using complementary bipolar transistors operates at low supply voltages, approximately 0.7 V. Power consumption is virtually independent of the inverter's static state. A method for calculating the transfer characteristic of an inverter using complementary bipolar transistors is developed, …

Algorithms Of Stable Adaptive Observation Of A Multidimensional Undefinite Object, Tursunova Sadoqat Abdusalom Qizi Mar 2026

Algorithms Of Stable Adaptive Observation Of A Multidimensional Undefinite Object, Tursunova Sadoqat Abdusalom Qizi

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

This article presents an algorithm for simultaneously estimating the parameters and state coordinates of a multidimensional control object when some of its state variables are not directly measured. The inability to measure all state variables (coordinates) of an object is a well-known drawback of identification schemes. Such conditions require the construction of adaptive state observers. This work demonstrates that when identifying the parameters of a mathematical model for an uncertain multidimensional object, the asymptotic stability of the object and the convergence of its parameters to the model parameters are ensured, provided the input vector is sufficiently informative. The construction of …

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

Background: Vamorolone is a dissociative glucocorticoid receptor agonist for treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The VBP15-006 study assessed vamorolone safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in 2- to < 4 and 7- to < 18-year-old boys with DMD. Results for 7- to < 18-year-old boys, either corticosteroid (CS)-untreated or switching from prior CS treatment, are reported here. Exploratory objectives included efficacy and pharmacodynamic biomarkers related to safety. Methods: In this phase II, open-label, multiple-dose study, participants received 2 or 6 mg/kg/day vamorolone for 12 weeks, followed by treatment in an expanded access protocol (EAP Canada). Results: 34 participants (12 CS-untreated, 22 CS-treated) aged 7- to < 18 years were enrolled. Most treatment-emergent adverse events were mild. All 34 participants completed VBP15-006 and entered EAP Canada. During EAP Canada, CS-untreated participants maintained stable linear growth, while CS-treated participants exhibited catch-up growth consistent with serum bone biomarkers (median total vamorolone exposure 1.3 and 1.7 years, respectively). Some weight gain occurred, especially in CS-untreated participants receiving 6 mg/kg/day. Dose-dependent adrenal suppression occurred in CS-untreated and CS-treated participants; 2 individuals who switched from deflazacort to vamorolone 2 mg/kg/day had generalized weakness consistent with adrenal insufficiency. Vamorolone showed dose-dependent pharmacokinetics, rapid clearance, and no accumulation. There were no relevant efficacy changes in CS-treated and CS-untreated groups at either dose. Conclusions: Vamorolone demonstrated a consistent safety profile in 7- to < 18-year-old boys with DMD. Switching to 6 mg/kg/day vamorolone appeared to mitigate adrenal insufficiency risk. There was no negative effect on growth, and catch-up growth occurred in previously CS-treated individuals switching to vamorolone. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05185622, NCT03863119. First submitted 09-11-2021.

Place And Time: Interrogating The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Social Vulnerability In Tennessee, Max Bangham Dixon Mar 2026

Place And Time: Interrogating The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Social Vulnerability In Tennessee, Max Bangham Dixon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Social vulnerability is essential for research and as a framework in disaster management. Despite a common understanding that social vulnerability is spatially and temporally variable, the ways in which it is variable are not well understood. This research examines the dynamic nature of social vulnerability through two indices (SoVI and SVI) at a census tract-level using Fuzzy-C Means clustering and spatial analyses. Drivers of vulnerability are examined to understand what influences place-based vulnerability and discover how those drivers vary across space. Findings suggest that Fuzzy-C Means clustering is effective in creating interpretable groups of vulnerability indicators that are consistent with …

A Context-Aware Computer Vision-Based Approach For Post-Earthquake Damage Assessment Of Bridge Inventories, Parham Bakhtiari, S. Ratna Pandey, M. Zaker Esteghamati

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research

Post-earthquake damage assessment is crucial to evaluate the safety and serviceability of bridges after an earthquake. Conventional screening methods rely on manual inspection, which is costly, time-consuming, and poses safety risks to inspectors. To address these challenges, this study presents a context-aware vision transformer framework for integrating structural element details into multi-defect identification through a late-fusion approach. The model is trained on a post-earthquake image dataset collected from three major earthquakes in Italy, consisting of 356 images. Five structural elements of reinforced concrete bridges are selected, where concrete spalling and reinforcement corrosion were chosen as target defects. The framework achieved …

Yoga For Stress Relief Program For Nursing Faculty And Staff, Julee Briscoe Waldrop Mar 2026

Yoga For Stress Relief Program For Nursing Faculty And Staff, Julee Briscoe Waldrop

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The phenomenon of burn-out in nurses is not new, however, it has been exacerbated and brought to the forefront of our attention since the COVID pandemic. Nursing shortages exacerbate the problem (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2023). The increased need for nurses due to many leaving the workforce and the aging of the population has increased enrollment pressure on schools of nursing, and therefore their faculty and staff. Nursing faculty also have stressful roles, that include balancing multiple expectations of teaching, scholarship, research and service. The above pressure as well as an ongoing faculty shortage (also exacerbated by …

Victimization, Health, And Help Seeking In North Dakota: How Interpersonal Violence Shapes Physical And Mental Health, Tahmid Hassan Jeeshan

Graduate Research Achievement Day Posters

Interpersonal violence extends beyond physical assault to include psychological and/or emotional abuse that can produce substantial physical and mental health consequences. This study examines how multiple forms of interpersonal violence relate to health outcomes among North Dakotan women, focusing on differences between rural and non rural residents. We compare victimization patterns, physical and mental health status, and treatment seeking behaviors. We anticipate that rural victims will report more severe or chronic victimization yet face reduced access to and use of healthcare and victim services. By jointly considering violence type, rural versus non-rural status, health outcomes, and treatment seeking, this project …

Combinatorial Therapeutic Strategies To Combat Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii, Tope A. Aderibigbe Mar 2026

Combinatorial Therapeutic Strategies To Combat Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii, Tope A. Aderibigbe

Theses and Dissertations

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen that poses a significant global health threat due to its remarkable ability to acquire multidrug (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) phenotypes. Therapeutic failures are increasingly common as strains develop resistance to nearly all available antibiotics, including carbapenems, polymyxins, and tigecycline, leaving clinicians with limited treatment options. This study aimed to investigate combinatorial therapeutic approaches capable of revitalizing antibiotic efficacy against MDR/XDR A. baumannii clinical isolates. We evaluated the synergistic potential of durlobactam-sulbactam in combination with twelve commonly used antibiotics, including amikacin, rifampin, tobramycin, tigecycline, cefiderocol, and others. Initial screening using the disc diffusion …

Show Me The (Publication) Data: A Case Study Of Author Affiliation Publication Data Sources Used In Transformative Agreements Assessment At A Mid-Sized Institution, Amy Pham

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

Bibliometrics has become an increasingly important metric type for negotiating and assessing transformative agreements, particularly corresponding author data. This case study from the University of San Diego compares OpenAlex, Web of Science, and publisher-provided data using real examples of publication data for TA assessment. Even at a mid-sized institution such as USD, the accuracy and completeness of publication information differs between data sources and brings into question ongoing issues with disambiguation and institution affiliation.
