Supporting Special Education Online Learners’ Social And Emotional Wellbeing, Nadia Strong Oct 2022

Supporting Special Education Online Learners’ Social And Emotional Wellbeing, Nadia Strong

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools closed for in person instruction and began remote learning. All students were impacted by the school closures but no students were as heavily impacted as students with disabilities. Parents reported a rise in tantrums, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation among young children during remote learning. The social and emotional wellbeing of children promotes increased participation, positive outlook about school, improves peer relationships, and increases the likelihood of academic success. The purpose of this school improvement project is to detail the importance of supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of online learners, specifically students …

Unplugged Learning In The Kindergarten Computer Science Classroom, Ashley Robinson

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research study was to determine the impact of teaching computer science to kindergarten using only unplugged learning rather than plugged or a mixture of plugged and unplugged learning on engagement. Participants included 71 kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students in a public school in rural central Iowa. Data was collected through behavior and off-task reminder tallies, as well as assessment data over nine classes equal to a trimester’s number of computer science classes. Students were taught using either strictly unplugged methods using games, books, manipulatives, and movement or a plugged/online curriculum using online puzzles and videos, …

The Grapho-Phonemic Approach To Teaching Sight Words And Its Impact On First Grade Reading Fluency, Taryn Ernst

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This action research study explored the connection between sight words and fluency. The researcher implemented an orthographic mapping intervention with a group of six first-grade students. Throughout the three-week study, students systematically examined the irregularities of first-grade sight words and mapped the expected and unexpected parts of the word. Students practiced reading these words in isolation and in context each week and were progress monitored using FastBridge sight word and CBMr assessments. The six participants were assessed on newly taught sight words as well as previously taught sight words. Data was collected to determine if the intervention resulted in long-term …

The Emerging Digital Infrastructure For Research In The Humanities, Donald J. Waters Oct 2022

The Emerging Digital Infrastructure For Research In The Humanities, Donald J. Waters

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

This article advances the thesis that three decades of investments by national and international funders, combined with those of scholars, technologists, librarians, archivists, and their institutions, have resulted in a digital infrastructure in the humanities that is now capable of supporting end-to-end research workflows. The article refers to key developments in the epigraphy and paleography of the premodern period. It draws primarily on work in classical studies but also highlights related work in the adjacent disciplines of Egyptology, ancient Near East studies, and medieval studies. The argument makes a case that much has been achieved but it does not declare …

Charting A Course To Conserve 30% Of Freshwaters By 2030, Sandra B. Zellmer Oct 2022

Charting A Course To Conserve 30% Of Freshwaters By 2030, Sandra B. Zellmer

William & Mary Law Review

One of President Biden’s earliest executive orders established an ambitious national goal to conserve at least 30 percent of U.S. lands, waters, and oceans by 2030. The Biden administration is not alone; over 100 countries support this goal as a means of combating climate change and slowing the pace of species extinction, both of which are accelerating at a rate that is unprecedented in history.

Despite its vow to pursue a wide-sweeping, all-of-government approach, Biden’s 30 by 30 initiative overlooks a critical component of the conservation goal—it pays virtually no attention to freshwater. Freshwater ecosystems are among the most endangered …

Preempting The States And Protecting The Charities: A Case For Nonprofit-Exempting Federal Action In Consumer Data Privacy, Sarah Fisher Oct 2022

Preempting The States And Protecting The Charities: A Case For Nonprofit-Exempting Federal Action In Consumer Data Privacy, Sarah Fisher

William & Mary Law Review

This Note argues that Congress should use its Commerce Clause power to pass a consumer data privacy measure that (1) preempts state law and (2) explicitly exempts 501(c)(3) organizations from compliance. Such preemptive action with a narrow 501(c)(3) carve-out would avoid the potential harm of exempting too broad a group of nonprofit entities while ensuring charitable organizations’ continued existence, would be more protective of both the individual privacy right and 501(c)(3) existence than merely adjusting the revenue dollar threshold at which entities must comply, and would properly balance the individual right to control personal data with the societal good served …

Ford V. Where Are We?: The Revival Of The Sliding Scale To Govern The Supreme Court's New "Relating To" Personal Jurisdiction, Zois Manaris

William & Mary Law Review

This Note proposes a test to govern “relating to” specific jurisdiction, a variation on a theme to those familiar with the doctrine: a “sliding scale” approach to contacts and relatedness, accompanied by a separate assessment of reasonableness factors the Supreme Court has outlined in previous cases to serve as a check on the sliding scale. Part I of this Note explains the “sliding scale” approach, its unpleasant first interaction with the Court, and its revival by the Ford majority. Part II defines this Note’s proposed test and demonstrates its consistency with Supreme Court precedent. Finally, Part III applies this Note’s …

From Pulau To Pulo: Archipelagic Perspectives On Southeast Asian Chinese Ethnicity From The Philippines And Indonesia, Josh Stenberg, Chien-Wen Kung, Charlotte Setijadi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Southeast Asia is an important region for working through ques-tions of Chineseness. It is, however, a notoriously heterogeneous region, and conclusions derived from some parts of it can be of limited applicability elsewhere. This special issue offering empiri-cally-grounded, multi-disciplinary research engages with and expands on existing scholarship on Southeast Asia’s Chinese. By focusing on Indonesia and the Philippines, the articles in this special issue investigate diverse models of being Chinese in Southeast Asia and depart from the familiar paradigms offered by Singapore and Malaysia, where ethnic Chinese populations are in the highest proportions and hold significant political power, and where …

Reversible Dioxygen Binding To Co(Ii) Complexes With Noninnocent Ligands, Praveen Kumar, Laxmi Devkota, Maximilian C. Casey, Anne A. Fischer, Sergey V. Lindeman, Adam T. Fiedler Oct 2022

Reversible Dioxygen Binding To Co(Ii) Complexes With Noninnocent Ligands, Praveen Kumar, Laxmi Devkota, Maximilian C. Casey, Anne A. Fischer, Sergey V. Lindeman, Adam T. Fiedler

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A series of mononuclear Co(II) complexes with noninnocent (redox-active) ligands are prepared that exhibit metal–ligand cooperativity during the reversible binding of O2. The complexes have the general formula, [CoII(LS,N)(TpR2)] (R = Me, Ph), where LS,N is a bidentate o-aminothiophenolate and TpR2 is a hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate scorpionate with R-substituents at the 3- and 5-positions. Exposure to O2 at room temperature results in one-electron oxidation and deprotonation of LS,N. The oxidized derivatives possess substantial “singlet diradical” character arising from antiferromagnetic coupling between an iminothiosemiquinonate (ITSQ•–) …

Volatiles In Berries: Biosynthesis, Composition, Bioavailability, And Health Benefits, Inah Gu, Luke Howard, Sun-Ok Lee

Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Abstract

Volatile compounds in fruits are responsible for their aroma. Among fruits, berries contain many volatile compounds, mainly esters, alcohols, terpenoids, aldehydes, ketones, and lactones. Studies for volatile compounds in berries have increased extensively as the consumption of berry products rapidly increased. In this paper, we reviewed biosynthesis and profiles of volatiles in some berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and cranberry) and their bioavailability and health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic effects in vitro and in vivo. Each berry had different major volatiles, but monoterpene had an important role in all berries as aroma-active components. Volatile compounds were …

Gastón Institute Publications

In this report, we will provide a descriptive analysis of the main trends in educational achievement for Latinos in Massachusetts in the period 2010-2022. We highlight areas in which Latino students have made considerable progress since the publication of the 2010 Gastón report “The State of Latinos and Education in Massachusetts: 2010,” along with other areas in which progress has stalled and/or been reversed. The data presented cover only until 2020, before the full effects of the Covid-19 pandemic were felt. We end with recommendations for further development of a Latino Education agenda.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Objective: Allostatic load refers to cumulative neuroendocrine burden and has been postulated to mediate and moderate physiological and psychological stress-related responses. This may have important implications for the risk of preterm birth. This systematic review examines the evidence on the association between prenatal allostatic load and preterm birth.

Data sources: A comprehensive search of seven electronic databases was conducted from inception to August 23, 2022 to identify all English-language observational and mixed methods studies examining allostatic load and preterm birth with no year or geographic restrictions.

Study eligibility criteria: Studies were included if they measured allostatic load, evaluated as the …

Permeable Curbs For Storm Water Pollution, Aldo Hernandez, Drew Johnson, Marcio Giacomoni Oct 2022

Permeable Curbs For Storm Water Pollution, Aldo Hernandez, Drew Johnson, Marcio Giacomoni

Publications

One of the problems that increased urbanization poses is storm water pollution. Several control measures exist that are used to treat and reduce pollution in our waterways, one of those being permeable concretes; but these have not been widely adopted. The goal of this project was to develop a permeable curb apparatus that could be used in retrofitting conventional streets. The permeable curb is comprised of a permeable concrete mix with a perforated pipe running through its center, this allows for water to filter through the porous concrete and continue downstream through the perforated pipe which would eventually lead to …

Addressing The Underdiagnosis Of Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A Mixed Methods Study Exploring The Knowledge And Practice Behaviors Of Cardiology Healthcare Providers, Isha Kalia Ms, Mph, Cgc

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder that is vastly underdiagnosed and undertreated. FH causes lifelong elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, resulting in an increased risk for coronary heart disease, myocardial infarctions, and sudden cardiac death. Cardiology healthcare providers (CHCPs) are in an ideal position to not only screen cardiology patients for FH but also to diagnose and manage FH patients.

Objectives: Describe the practice behaviors of CHCPs in the screening, diagnosis, and management of FH, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of CHCPs regarding FH screening and diagnostic interventions that can be implemented in …
