A Study Of Pressure Probe Response In Steady And Unsteady Flows, Michael T. Charonnat Sep 2022

A Study Of Pressure Probe Response In Steady And Unsteady Flows, Michael T. Charonnat

Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is two-fold: to analyze the directional calibration of a 3-hole probe in steady flow and to develop a method for the interpretation of measurements recorded with a novel, fast-response Pitot-type probe in unsteady, turbulent flow. Calibration data for the 3-hole probe’s two side ports was taken in the steady, non-turbulent region of a free jet and was evaluated for symmetry. In addition, data that was recorded using one side port in two independent calibration runs was compared to study repeatability. Misalignment was found between the nominally symmetric data sets, which may be the result of …

Water Insecurity And Gender-Based Violence: A Global Review Of The Evidence, Paula S. Tallman, Shalean Collins, Gabriela Salmon-Mulanovich, Binahayati Rusyidi, Aman Kothadia, Stroma Cole

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We reviewed the existing literature documenting the association between water insecurity and gender-based violence to (1) describe the characteristics and contexts of available studies, and (2) identify and classify documented gender-based violence across domains of water insecurity (access, affordability, adequacy, reliability, and safety). 18 peer-reviewed articles mentioned associations between water insecurity and gender-based violence. All studies were conducted in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and were published in English. The most common manifestation of the relationship between water insecurity and gender-based violence was an increased risk of sexual and physical violence for women who walked long distances to access water. …

The Asymmetric Effects Of External Debt On Economic Growth In Selected Mena Countries: Some Insights From A Panel Quantile Regression, Mahmoud Haddad, Refk Selmi, Shawkat Hammoudeh Sep 2022

The Asymmetric Effects Of External Debt On Economic Growth In Selected Mena Countries: Some Insights From A Panel Quantile Regression, Mahmoud Haddad, Refk Selmi, Shawkat Hammoudeh

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

The increased level of debt is a major risk for the financial stability and questions the ability of countries to balance fiscal vulnerabilities with development goals. With the rising debt wave and additional pressures induced by the pandemic and the Russian/Ukrainian war on sources of development finance, this study uses a panel quantile regression to re-examine the asymmetric relationship between the external debt and economic growth in six highly indebted MENA countries, namely, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia over the period 2006-2019. The outcomes support the main hypothesis that high debt reduces economic growth, yet this effect seems …

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The reconstruction of event-level information, such as the direction or energy of a neutrino interacting in IceCube DeepCore, is a crucial ingredient to many physics analyses. Algorithms to extract this high level information from the detector’s raw data have been successfully developed and used for high energy events. In this work, we address unique challenges associated with the reconstruction of lower energy events in the range of a few to hundreds of GeV and present two separate, state-of-the-art algorithms. One algorithm focuses on the fast directional reconstruction of events based on unscattered light. The second algorithm is a likelihood-based multipurpose …

Early phase diabetes is often accompanied by pain sensitization. In Drosophila, the insulin receptor (InR) regulates the persistence of injury-induced thermal nociceptive sensitization. Whether Drosophila InR also regulates the persistence of mechanical nociceptive sensitization remains unclear. Mice with a sensory neuron deletion of the insulin receptor (Insr) show normal nociceptive baselines; however, it is uncertain whether deletion of Insr in nociceptive sensory neurons leads to persistent nociceptive hypersensitivity. In this study, we used fly and mouse nociceptive sensitization models to address these questions. In flies, InR mutants and larvae with sensory neuron-specific expression of RNAi …

PURPOSE: The benefit of radiation therapy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains unclear. We hypothesized that a new mechanistic mathematical model of chemotherapy and radiation response could predict clinical outcomes a priori, using a previously described baseline measurement of perfusion from computed tomography scans, normalized area under the enhancement curve (nAUC).

METHODS AND MATERIALS: We simplified an existing mass transport model that predicted cancer cell death by replacing previously unknown variables with averaged direct measurements from randomly selected pathologic sections of untreated PDAC. This allowed using nAUC as the sole model input to approximate tumor perfusion. We then compared the …

Addressing Patient Heterogeneity In Disease Predictive Model Development, Xu Gao, Weining Shen, Jing Ning, Ziding Feng, Jianhua Hu Sep 2022

Addressing Patient Heterogeneity In Disease Predictive Model Development, Xu Gao, Weining Shen, Jing Ning, Ziding Feng, Jianhua Hu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This paper addresses patient heterogeneity associated with prediction problems in biomedical applications. We propose a systematic hypothesis testing approach to determine the existence of patient subgroup structure and the number of subgroups in patient population if subgroups exist. A mixture of generalized linear models is considered to model the relationship between the disease outcome and patient characteristics and clinical factors, including targeted biomarker profiles. We construct a test statistic based on expectation maximization (EM) algorithm and derive its asymptotic distribution under the null hypothesis. An important computational advantage of the test is that the involved parameter estimates under the complex …

Background: Identification of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) following curative intent therapies is a surrogate for microscopic residual disease for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Preclinically, in micrometastatic microsatellite stable (MSS) CRC, increased TGF-β signaling results in exclusion of anti-tumor cytotoxic T cells from the tumor microenvironment. Bintrafusp alfa (BA) is a bifunctional fusion protein composed of the extracellular domain of the TGF-βRII receptor ("TGF-β trap") and anti-PD-L1 antibody.

Methods: Patients with liver-limited, MSS mCRC and with detected ctDNA after complete resection of all known tumors and standard-of-care therapy were treated with 1200 mg of BA intravenously every 14 days …

Objective: The primary course of treatment for patients with low- to intermediate-risk tonsil cancer has evolved with a shift toward primary transoral robotic surgery (TORS) or radiation therapy (RT). While favorable outcomes have been reported after deintensification via unilateral TORS or RT (uniRT), comparisons of functional outcomes between these treatments are lacking. We compared clinical outcomes (Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity [DIGEST] and feeding tube [FT]) and patient-reported swallowing outcomes (MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory [MDADI]) based on primary treatment strategy: TORS, uniRT, or bilateral RT (biRT).

Study design: Secondary analysis of prospective cohort.

Setting: Single institution.

Methods: The study …
