Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an often disabling and chronic condition that is normally assessed using diagnostic interviews or lengthy self-report questionnaires. This makes routine screening in general health settings impractical, and as a result OCD is often under-(or mis-)recognized. The present study reports on the development of an ultra-brief version of the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Child Version (OCI-CV) which may be administered routinely as a screener for pediatric OCD.
Method: A total of 489 youth diagnosed with OCD, 259 non-clinical controls, and 299 youth with other disorders completed the OCI-CV and other indices of psychopathology. Using item analyses, we extracted five …
United We Stand: On The Benefits Of Coordinated Punishment, Vicente Calabuig, Natalia Jiménez, Gonzalo Olcina, Ismael Rodriguez-Lara
United We Stand: On The Benefits Of Coordinated Punishment, Vicente Calabuig, Natalia Jiménez, Gonzalo Olcina, Ismael Rodriguez-Lara
ESI Working Papers
Coordinated punishment occurs when punishment decisions are complements; i.e., this punishment device requires a specific number of punishers to be effective; otherwise, no damage will be inflicted on the target. While societies often rely on this punishment device, its benefits are unclear compared with uncoordinated punishment, where punishment decisions are substitutes. We argue that coordinated punishment can prevent the free-riding of punishers and show, both theoretically and experimentally, that this may be beneficial for cooperation in a team investment game, compared with uncoordinated punishment.

Subclavian Steal Phenomenon Associated With Vascular Ring In An Infant Who Had A Prenatally Diagnosed Right Aortic Arch With An Atretic Aberrant Left Subclavian Artery, Daiji Takajo, Jennifer Blake, Sanjeev Aggarwal
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Vascular ring is a rare congenital anomaly in which the abnormal origin of the aorta or its branches and pulmonary arteries leads to encircling and compression of the trachea and esophagus. A right aortic arch (RAA) with an aberrant left subclavian artery is one of the most common forms of vascular ring. Here, we report a case of a prenatally diagnosed vascular ring resulting from an RAA with an aberrant left subclavian artery. When the infant was 7 months of age, the development of noisy breathing prompted further evaluation with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging that showed an atretic left subclavian …

Pregnancy in women with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is not well described. In this retrospective study, we analyzed data on pregnant women with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who were under follow-up care in the cardiology department of a tertiary care hospital. We reviewed data on all women registered in the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy cohort and those who attended the cardio-obstetric clinic and delivered between January 2010 and June 2019. From these 2 groups, we identified 7 pregnant women with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who delivered during this period. These 7 women (mean [SD] age, 25 [3.3] years) had a total of 15 pregnancies (range per woman,1–4). This …

We usually hope that social norms discourage injustice. However, we are all witnesses to harmful norms enforced by governments, such as xenophobia, which need to be contested and changed. Previous studies have concluded that it is possible to change a harmful norm through contestation by powerless actors if suitable structural conditions exist. However, these structural conditions have not been sufficiently studied and, as such, are the focus of this paper. Our paper begins with a review of well-established micro-level theories of social identity theory (SIT), recast as a set of 42 discrete theoretical statements. These statements are then re-expressed in …

Coastal Fog Enhances Physiological Function Of Seaside Daisies (Erigeron Glaucus), Sarah E. Gomes, Sara A. Baguskas
Coastal Fog Enhances Physiological Function Of Seaside Daisies (Erigeron Glaucus), Sarah E. Gomes, Sara A. Baguskas
Western North American Naturalist
Seaside daisy (Erigeron glaucus) is a plant native to fog-influenced coastal dune habitat in California. Seaside daisy is an important nectar plant to a variety of pollinators, especially butterflies, and is commonly used in coastal dune habitat restoration projects. In San Francisco, pollinator habitat restoration is critical for preserving species that would have otherwise been lost to urbanization. Advancing our basic understanding of how microclimate conditions (coastal fog in particular) impact the physiological function of the seaside daisy is an important first step to developing climate change–resilient habitat restoration plans. In semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems, coastal fog can augment …

Felids are commonly housed in zoological collections worldwide. While aspects of their behaviour are well studied, there remain questions on best practice husbandry including during reproduction and breeding scenarios. In 2016, the Zoological Society of London’s (ZSL) London Zoo held a pair of Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) for the purpose of breeding. While they are believed to be solitary in the wild, many collections maintain their tigers in pairs, with some keeping pairs together during parturition and rearing periods. The aim of this study was to investigate the social interactions between a male Sumatran tiger and cubs when housed …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
This report summarizes current computer simulation capabilities and the availability of near-real-time data sources allowing for a novel approach of analyzing and determining optimized responses during disruptions of complex multi-agency transit system. The authors integrated a number of technologies and data sources to detect disruptive transit system performance issues, analyze the impact on overall system-wide performance, and statistically apply the likely traveler choices and responses. The analysis of unaffected transit resources and the provision of temporary resources are then analyzed and optimized to minimize overall impact of the initiating event.
Do We Really Know What Is In Our Food? The Connection Between Dietary Mycotoxin Exposure And Pediatric Crohn’S Disease, Susan L. Gonya
Do We Really Know What Is In Our Food? The Connection Between Dietary Mycotoxin Exposure And Pediatric Crohn’S Disease, Susan L. Gonya
Master's Theses and Capstones
AbstractBACKGROUND: The incidence of pediatric Crohn’s disease (CD) has increased over the past few decades. The etiology of CD has not yet been elucidated. Still, researchers have identified variables associated with the disease process, including genetic predisposition, environmental triggers like a poor-quality diet, air pollution, water pollution, and a dysbiotic microbiome with increased fungal diversity as predisposing factors. Fungal mycotoxin contamination in the food supply from toxicants like Deoxynivalenol (DON), a highly prevalent gastrointestinal irritant, has largely been ignored as a potential factor influencing the fungal dysbiosis and symptoms associated with the disease process. It is hypothesized that global and …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Sequencing batch reactors are efficient wastewater treatment systems, however, they are not adapted to treat aquaria. We aimed to compare the efficacies of a modified single-tank sequencing batch reactor (SSBR) and a regular overflow filtration system. Zebrafish were maintained in an acrylic aquarium connected to an SSBR or in a tank connected to a regular overflow filtration system for 27 weeks. Water change or aeration using air stone was not performed. The water quality in both groups was within the normal range until 26 weeks, after which the nitrite and nitrate levels increased. The average temperature was, 29.46 ± 0.71°C …

Comparison Of Biomechanical Properties Associated With The Diameter And Insertion Depth Of Bone Anchors In The Femoral Condyle Of Toy Breed Cadaver Dogs, Yun-Hee An, Mu-Young Kim, Hun-Young Yoon
Comparison Of Biomechanical Properties Associated With The Diameter And Insertion Depth Of Bone Anchors In The Femoral Condyle Of Toy Breed Cadaver Dogs, Yun-Hee An, Mu-Young Kim, Hun-Young Yoon
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The objective of the present study was to compare the biomechanical properties of implanted bone anchors based on diameter and insertion depth to yield selection criteria for bone anchor size in toy breed dogs. Twenty toy breed dog cadavers weighing < 5 kg underwent placement of five types of veterinary bone anchors (short diameter, short length [SDSL]; short diameter, medium length [SDML]; medium diameter, medium length [MDML]; medium diameter, long length [MDLL]; and long diameter, medium length [LDML]) at a predetermined femoral attachment site. Anchor screw depth/femoral condyle width (FCW) and anchor screw diameter/femoral condyle length (FCL) were measured using radiography. The yield load, Young’s modulus and failure load were measured and the causes of failure for each construct were recorded. The anchor screw depth/FCW was < 50%, 50%–75%, ~50%, and 75%–100% in the SDSL, SDML, MDML, and MDLL groups, respectively. The yield load, Young’s modulus and failure load were higher in the SDML and MDLL groups than in the SDSL and MDML groups. The anchor screw diameter/FCL was 12%–15% and 24%–30% in the SDML and LDML groups, respectively. No differences in biomechanical parameters were found between the SDML and LDML groups. The cause of failure in all constructs was pull-out of the bone anchor, except for distal femur fracture in five LDML constructs. In conclusion, when implanting bone anchors in toy breed dogs, the insertion depth should be > 50% of the FCW, regardless of diameter. Moreover, distal femur fracture can occur if the bone anchor diameter/FCL ratio exceeds 24%.

Environmental Enrichment And The Behavioral Effects On Captive Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus Leucas), Tsung-Hsien Li, Evonne Lim, I-Chun Chen, Chuen-Fu Lin, Shih-Chu Chen, Ming-An Tsai
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Environmental enrichment methods are meant to encourage animals to display their complete ethogram while under human care in zoos and aquariums. In this study, we sought to characterize the effectiveness of environmental enrichment (involving the inclusion of toys in the living environment) on captive beluga whales in the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium. Our results indicate that belugas with toys spend less time floating and swimming repetitively than do belugas without toys. The presence of toys was also shown to enhance social interactions among captive belugas. Overall, our findings indicate that the provision of toys can enrich the …

The aim of this study was to clone, express and identify the truncated S1 gene of nephrotropic infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) of chicken. Firstly, two genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into pMD18-T vector. The truncated S1 gene designated as Sf200 (containing five antigenic sites of S1 glycoprotein on amino acid residues (aa) 24–61, (aa) 291–398 and (aa) 497–543 and GM-CSF were then amplified from the respective recombinant pMD18-T plasmids and cloned into pET-32a (+) vector resulting pET-Sf200, pET-GM which were identified by restriction enzyme digestion and sequencing analysis. The …

The purpose of this study was to make a between-sex comparison of trochlear groove and patellar metrics in healthy dogs on tangential radiographs. A total of 38 stifle joints from 19 healthy dogs (9 males; 10 females) from three small breeds (Pomeranian, Pinscher, Chihuahua) were evaluated. The following morphometric parameters of patella and trochlear groove were measured: trochlear sulcus angle (SA), lateral and medial trochlear inclination angles (LTI; MTI), trochlear groove depth (TD), retropatellar angle of Wiberg (WA), lateral and medial patellar facet angles (LFA, MFA), lateral and medial facet lengths (LF, MF), horizontal and vertical patellar diameters. In the …

Low-energy neutrons have been a useful probe in fundamental physics studies for more than 70 years. With advances in accelerator technology, many new sources are spallation based. These new, high-flux facilities are becoming the sites for many next-generation fundamental neutron physics experiments. In this review, we present an overview of the sources and the current and upcoming fundamental neutron physics programs.
