Parametric Design Of A Manifold For A Hollow Micropillar Evaporator For Use In High Heat Flux Applications, Alex Dutton Aug 2022

Parametric Design Of A Manifold For A Hollow Micropillar Evaporator For Use In High Heat Flux Applications, Alex Dutton

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

With the failure of Dennard Scaling and changes in electronics packaging leading toward 2.5 and 3D packages, the current methods of thermal management are failing to keep up with rising heat fluxes. In order to manage these rising heat fluxes, engineers and scientists are looking towards two phase cooling and microchannel flows.

Many forms of novel thermal management are currently being investigated as means to address the thermal challenges present in modern microelectronics, including flow boiling, pool boiling, and direct liquid cooling. One technology of interest is evaporative cooling using continuously fed micro-droplets. High evaporation rates can be achieved by …

Parental Attachment And Compassion As Predictors Of Distress Disclosure Among Young Adults, Ellie N. Wilde Aug 2022

Parental Attachment And Compassion As Predictors Of Distress Disclosure Among Young Adults, Ellie N. Wilde

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Distress disclosure is associated with perceived social support, so it is important to understand what supports our ability to disclose distress. This study examined relationships between distress disclosure, fear of others’ compassion, parental attachment, self-compassion, and perceived social support among young adults. I expected young adults with stronger parental attachment security to report greater capacity for distress disclosure and that this relationship would be mediated by fear of others’ compassion. I expected trait self-compassion to moderate relationships between these variables on all paths of the mediation, such that higher self-compassion would reduce the adverse impact of insecure parental attachment on …

E-Resources Remote Access Tools: A Comparative Analysis, Duragappa ., Chandrashekara M

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The remote access platform plays a major role in facilitating the off-campus access to e-resources. A library which does not have remote access platform to e-resources, is missing the opportunity to provide the off-campus access which intern usually affects the patrons negatively in terms of accessing the needed e-resources. It is quite difficult to select the suitable platform for the same purpose. Therefore, authors have made an attempt to compare and analyse the content of the RAP (Remote Access Platform) and suggest the suitable one for the academic library. Here authors have selected 5 items for the comparison and they …

An Automated System For Strain Engineering And Straintronics Of 2d Materials, Onur Çakıroğlu, Joshua O. Island, Yong Xie, Riccardo Frisenda, Andres Castellanos-Gomez

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

This work presents an automated three-point bending apparatus that can be used to study strain engineering and straintronics in 2D materials. This work benchmarks the system by reporting reproducible strain tuned micro-reflectance, Raman, and photoluminescence spectra for monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). These results are in good agreement with reported literature using conventional bending apparatus. This work further utilizes the system to automate strain investigations of straintronic devices by measuring the piezoresistive effect and the strain effect on photoresponse in an MoS2 electrical device. The details of the construction of the straightforward system are given and it is anticipated that it …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

A promising energy range to look for angular correlations between cosmic rays of extragalactic origin and their sources is at the highest energies, above a few tens of EeV (1 EeV 1018 eV). Despite the flux of these particles being extremely low, the area of ∼3000 km2 covered at the Pierre Auger Observatory, and the 17 yr data-taking period of the Phase 1 of its operations, have enabled us to measure the arrival directions of more than 2600 ultra-high-energy cosmic rays above 32 EeV. We publish this data set, the largest available at such energies from an integrated exposure of …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Massive plastic pollution and grand scale emission of CO2 into the atmosphere represent two major and deeply connected societal challenges, which can have adverse impacts on climate, human health, and marine ecosystems. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic led to substantially increased production, use, and discarding of disposable masks, a problem that requires urgent and effective technological solutions to mitigate their negative environmental impacts. Furthermore, over the years significant research efforts have sought to address the challenges of plastic waste and CO2 emission, such as development of chemical upcycling methods and low-cost CO2 capture sorbents at scale, respectively. In this work, …

Identification Of Secondary Structural Elements Contained Within The Intrinsically Disordered N-Terminal Tail Of The Bloom’S Syndrome Helicase., Vivek Somasundaram

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Bloom’s Syndrome Helicase (BLM) is one of five human RecQ helicases and is necessary for maintenance of genome stability. Whilst a crystal structure exists for the C-terminal domain of BLM, very limited structural knowledge is known about the intrinsically disordered N-terminal tail. This lack of insight exists, despite the fact that the N-terminus of BLM is essential for the overall biological activity of BLM. Here we provide an Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy based approach that we used to identify two distinct ⍺-helices contained within the first 100 residues of BLM. In addition, we propose a mutagenesis-based approach involving rationally …

Objective.

High-frequency oscillations (HFOs) are considered a biomarker of the epileptogenic zone in intracranial EEG recordings. However, automated HFO detectors confound true oscillations with spurious events caused by the presence of artifacts.

Approach.

We hypothesized that, unlike pseudo-HFOs with sharp transients or arbitrary shapes, real HFOs have a signal characteristic that can be represented using a small number of oscillatory bases. Based on this hypothesis using a sparse representation framework, this study introduces a new classification approach to distinguish true HFOs from the pseudo-events that mislead seizure onset zone (SOZ) localization. Moreover, we further classified the HFOs into ripples and …

Exploring The Roles Of The Craft Trainer In The Construction Industry, Mary M. Chatham Aug 2022

Exploring The Roles Of The Craft Trainer In The Construction Industry, Mary M. Chatham

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The construction industry is a significant contributor to the overall U.S. economy. Since the early 1980’s the industry has been suffering from a workforce shortage at the individual contributor level, craft employees. This sector of the workforce comprises between 40-50% of the workforce, and contributes significantly to the revenue stream. Given this, the craft workforce shortage continues to pose a significant threat to the overall sustainability of the industry. Training and the transfer of knowledge are important concepts across all industries given the investment in training that has been reported. It is of heightened importance when labor shortages exist, such …

Number-Time Interaction: Search For A Common Magnitude System In A Cross-Modal Setting, Anuj Shukla, Raju S Bapi Aug 2022

Number-Time Interaction: Search For A Common Magnitude System In A Cross-Modal Setting, Anuj Shukla, Raju S Bapi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A theory of magnitude (ATOM) suggests that a generalized magnitude system in the brain processes magnitudes such as space, time, and numbers. Numerous behavioral and neurocognitive studies have provided support to ATOM theory. However, the evidence for common magnitude processing primarily comes from the studies in which numerical and temporal information are presented visually. Our current understanding of such cross-dimensional magnitude interactions is limited to visual modality only. However, it is still unclear whether the ATOM-framework accounts for the integration of cross-modal magnitude information. To examine the cross-modal influence of numerical magnitude on temporal processing of the tone, we conducted …
